LAWN BY THE YARD

I started by putting out requests for bids with a number of area landscapers. In spite of being one of the later requests I put out, they were actually the first to respond and he was able to make it out to look over the project the next day. His price was better than what other contractors were offering as well and he was very accommodating as he could tell I was trying to keep my costs down. Due to the weather the project faced a few delays, but as soon as it dried out enough they went right to work. Took only a few days before the shed and driveway were gone and the yard went from a cratered mess to a nice graded expanse. Knowing that I was trying to trim costs he was able to arrange for someone to take the shed to avoid the need (and costs) of a dumpster. Since I had planned to seed it myself to save on costs as well he provided me with information on what seeds to buy for the soil type and fertilizer types. Working with Lawn by the Yard was a great experience and I certainly would recommend their services if someone I knew were looking.

I requested a quote from Lawn By The Yard for fall yard work and winter snow plowing. After a few days, I got a two sentence response. The first apologized for the delay in response, so they get bonus points for courteousness and professionalism there. The second stated that they could not perform that work because my property is outside of their work zone. What the heck? My address is in the same city that their work address listed on Angie's List (St. Paul) and I'm certainly in Ramsey County, which their description on Angie's List leads the reader to believe they service in totality. I found this particularly annoying because I try to pay attention to services offered and areas serviced so I'm not going on a snipe hunt. Just to make sure that I didn't miss anything, I re-read their Angie's List info and website to be sure that I wasn't errant in my reading. Nope. So either the information on their site is just plain wrong or they didn't want to do the work for whatever reason. I would suggest they update their site or state that they aren't taking on new jobs or whatever, as the case may be. Either way, something needs to change over at Lawn By The Yard so I don't waste my time and theirs on soliciting work that they won't do.

They did a terrific job! The section of our yard had been overgrown with weeds, out of control raspberries and a mislocated shrub. The shrub was saved so we could transplant it to a more appropriate spot in our yard. They also dug out layers of concrete brick that we had not even known were beneath the garden! The sod is looking great and our yard looks wonderfully transformed. Timely, efficient and reasonably priced. We would recommend these guys.

I had a rather large boulder retaining wall and a large swing set that was encased in a large pea gravel bed that I needed removed from my backyard and replaced with sod. At first I thought I could tackle this on my own, but soon found out that this would be nearly impossible without machinery. I had at least 30-40 large boulders that were 300+ pounds each, and hundreds of smaller ones in this pile. I started the bids for the project, and called up Nick and two other companies. He arrived on time and came to a plan within minutes. It was clear he knew what he was doing. I also received two other bids, but they were full until the end of the year. That made my decision even easier as I had wanted to go with Nick. The only issue I had with Nick is that he is always working and never at his office so it took a while to get a bid. I wanted to include this part in the review, because it appeared that he was not interested in the job, but it turns out he really was. I saw from a few reviews here that others may have had the same impression as I did. So, when I inquired with Nick about it further, he made it clear that it was a job he wanted and didn?t mean to give the impression that he was not interested. After that was out of the way, I scheduled the job with him and he gave a rough estimate on when he would be able to do it. Nick wasn?t able to pin down an exact date more than a few days in advance, but that is to be expected with weather and all sorts of other variables. The work was started and completed on August 8th, 2014. I was impressed by four things; 1) How quickly they were able to get this job done, 2) How hard they worked, 3) The pristine condition of the sod they brought over, and 4) The care taken to not destroy my current lawn while performing the work. Both me, and my wife were very satisfied with the work performed. I have before and after pictures and video of the work performed, should anyone be interested. I would definitely recommend and use Nick again for all future landscaping needs.

The job went smoothly and without a problem. I liked that Nick had Gopher One come out and mark our garden with flags indicating underground cables. Nick is responsive and he and his staff are very professional. I would highly recommend this company to anyone thinking about landscaping. To Nick and his team, no job is too small. They're great!

They never repsponded to request for a quote

I described the work that needed to be done by phone and asked for a price quote. He gave me the day and an approximate time that he would be there. He did not show or call. It's now been 1 week since we talked so I don't expect the price quote to be given or a return phone call.

This is the second time I have had Nick and Lawn by the Yard do work for me. His prices are reasonable and his work is good. It may take some time to get a quote or get on the schedule but I have always been pleased with the end result. Even after I had some concerns about what was done this time he came back to make sure I was happy and did what was asked. His crew is polite and I will not hesitate to contact Lawn by the Yard again for future work.

May not seem like a lot but it was 4 full grown tress never trimmed and they hauled away the trimmings. The landscaping needed a lot of care and it took them the entire day. I would recommend this service again.

We had Lawn by the Yard, very good. He did a good job last year, Lawn by the Yard, yeah. I liked them a lot. He came out and did it and then he had somebody else other than him come out and do the cedar chips around the trees. He was a nice guy. I really didn't have too much to do with them. I just told them what we wanted put in and that was it, that's what we did and the plants died but anyway they weren't very hard to begin with. It was like a year and a half afterwards they all died, it happens, Minnesota has almost cold winters.

Nick and his associates did a wonderful job--beyond our expectations. They were friendly, professional, polite, and were easy to work with. Anyone needing sod and/or yard work should definitely have Nick make a bid. They cleaned up and left us extremely pleased.

Great job and meticulous care of the lawn. Last year had contracted for a few lawn odd jobs such as sod replacement in some areas, fixing the landscape borders, etc. Did a nice job on these. Only downside is that Nick is very behind on invoicing although he did tell us this up front. Little on the pricey side but first lawn company to actually do what I ask! This company is a definite A!

He looked at the whole foundation and stated everything looked OK but one area. It is a complicated area, where the concrete, blacktop meet the house and are slanted in the wrong direction. No easy solutions. He gave me a few different options I may want to look into: Blacktop &/or Concrete vendors and tiling the interior of the house. I was happy he was able to evaluate the issues and help point me in a possible better direction than using his services.

UPDATE: Nick stopped by my house and left a note to call him. He was incredibly helpful on the phone. It turns out we aren't a good geographic match, but he was still very helpful and gave me some good advice. I would recommend that if you reach a full voice mail box the way I did, that you try calling again after a day or so. He seems like someone that would be good to work with. I submitted my request for an estimate via Lawn by the Yard's website form (http://www.lawnbytheyard.com/freeestimates) and never heard a response. When I called, I was sent to a personal email box, rather than a business, and the box was full so I cannot leave a message.

I called and talked with them on a Friday afternoon. They said they could come over Friday night but never heard from them. They called on Monday at 3:00pm and left a message about coming over later that day before 5pm which wasn't enough time to respond. I called them back and left a message on Tuesday asking for another time leaving a few possible times to meet but never heard back. **** 4/25/14 Update **** After I left my negative review Nick called me the next day. He was able to come out at our agreed upon time and he provided an estimate. He apologized for not getting back to me and his quote seems fair against other quotes I have received. I am reviewing his quote against others at this point weighing different factors.

They did an excellent job of making things look more presentable.

I called Lawn By The Yard to get an estimate for leaf cleanup. I talked to Nick, who told me that the job would not be completed for up to two weeks (they were quite booked up at the time). He was quite honest and forthcoming about the wait time, which I found refreshing. Although I decided to go with another company to get the cleanup done sooner, I wouldn't hesitate to call Lawn By The Yard in the future. Nick also gave me a cost estimate over the phone, and the price was reasonable.

When I first called, Lawn by the Yard was very responsive and requested he show up and review the project and details. He was very open to my request and provided suggestions on what I may want to do. I mentioned this because I was questioning what to do with a lilac plant along the back yard. We ended up cutting it very low to sprout up again. I believe this was the right chose because of the large truck it had grown over time. The work was very hard and done during a hot spell. There was a lot of plant material removed that ended up filling a large trailer they had brought along. They also disposed of some extra plant material I had laying around. I do appreciate the care they took on my yard. They made sure to clean up after the project. This includes clearing any small material that may have gotten loose during the treks to drag all material to the trailer. I will admit, Nick seemed very familiar with garden plants. He was able to name some of the plant in my garden (recently acquired garden).

Nick was exceptionally responsive when I called him in late May regarding our front lawn which had been devastated by grub worms. He came out right away; diagnosed the problems and gave us an estimate for the work. As a result of weather challenges and vacation schedules, he was not able to begin the work until late July. Once he and his team were able to start - the work was done efficiently and professionally. We had a new lawn in just 2 days!! The charges were consistent with his estimate - even though they performed some extra services at our request. We would definitely use this provider again.

Nick has worked for us before, and always does a great job at a fair price. The work was done quickly, and the yard looks great. I plan to call Nick again in the future for more work in our yard!

Left two messages and never heard back.

I don’t remember how much they charged me for their services. I was very pleased with them. They answered my inquiries and questions right away. They came out and did the job. I haven’t finished with all their services yet and I hope it all continues the way it started. I thought their price was very fair. I will see how the season ends; and if the services work out well for me, I would use them again.

Our yard was a complete mess leaves everywhere from last year. The grass was very tall . They came in cleaned it all up. Trimmed up bushes and trees what would have taken me weeks took them hours my neighbor also hired them and we r having them come back to help with some landscaping

I was desperate to have my front yard looking nice by Jun2 for visitors. I had contacted landscapers I had worked with before but none of them returned my calls. I went to Angie's List and based on ratings from my area, I called Lawn by the Yard around 11:00 AM Wed May 29. Nick agreed to meet right away. We met at my house at 11:45. By 12:30 I had a bid and a commitment to have the work completed by Saturday Jun 1. Friday, May 31 at 5:00 PM, while helping my son move, I received a call from Nick that the work had been completed. As a bonus, they also cut down the weeds in the boulevards (I live on a corner) and along the sidewalk and retaining wall. What I especially liked about talking to Nick about my yard was getting conformation that my decision 5 years ago to replace the grass on my sloping difficult to mow front yard with mulch without landscape cloth was not a bad decision but it did need a certain level of maintenance. The bid from Nick included a very reasonable maintenance service fee. A co-worker asked for contact information for Lawn by the Yard just based on Nick's responsiveness and the reasonable bid. I will definitely be recommending Lawn by the Yard to anyone looking for this type of service.
