At Home Tailors, we understand the details. This includes both traditional home construction techniques as well as the new methodologies for more sustainable building practices. We are very pleased with the results. Tim, Jade and Marcelo worked with us ahead of time on plans on how the kitchen would be arranged. We had a lot of general ideas and it was great to be able to get everything fleshed out with guidance and suggestions we wouldn't have thought of. Once the work started there were times where the project dragged on and it wasn't always clear what the delay was. The end results are great and very well done. Bruce, one of the carpenters, was clearly very experienced and paid attention to details. Any questions or concerns we did have were addressed before the project was finished. From start to finish the remodel took about 6 months.

We were very pleased with the work, they were on time and helped with the design, colors and gave us a fair price.
Description of Work: They came out and completely renovated our mudroom. We had old linoleum and dingy white walls, and they laid beautiful flooring, new counter above our washer/dryer, cabinets and painted the walls. Looks very nice.

The good - they responded to my request for a quote by end of business the next day. The bad - they didn't want the job (basement finish/remodel) and their reason why (they apparently don't work in Savage, MN) is a direct contradiction to what is on their Angie's List page which states their service area is a "30 Mile Radius Of St Paul". My address to their address in St Paul is less than 30 miles according to Google Maps - there was also nothing (that I could find when I looked again on 07/10/2014) on their website indicating that they don't perform work in Savage, MN. If they just don't want to work south of the river or something, that's their prerogative, but they should update their service area to reflect a smaller radius from St Paul or say 30 miles from St Paul except x,y,z cities/counties/whatever the case may be so people don't waste their time trying to contact a service provider who doesn't want to service their area. Hopefully they will live up to their overall A rating and take the time to update their webpage and Angie's list with a more accurate representation of their service area.

thank you for taking the time to look so closely at our range. i have since taken the time to amend our range with a little more clarification. Also, our range is somewhat dependent on the time of year, and this season is especially difficult due to all the road construction. driving south 30 miles, almost any time of day, is too time consuming to be either efficient with our production or using ecologically sustainable practices, i.e. gas. in addition, we are very busy with work much closer to home, so we choose to stay close when ever possible. i presume you are OK with this scenario. thank you for your understanding.

Home Tailors did an amazing job on all the work they did on our home, and I would recommend them unconditionally. The work was completed on time, on budget, and with utmost professionalism. Both the owner of the company and chief designer came to our home to consult with us on different options, and spent a great deal of time helping us make decisions based on our priorities. Prior to starting construction, they let all of our neighbors know that they would be there working and provided the neighbors with a number to call if construction was too loud or obstructive in any way. Our spaces were always cleaned up as much as they could be at the end of the work day. They respected our home by only opening walls when it was absolutely necessary and putting down runners so they wouldn't damage our hardwood floors. In my experience, the quality of their work and professionalism is unparalleled.
Description of Work: -Replaced all of our plumbing -Moved a vent in the bathroom which involved installing a new vent and re-tiling part of the tub/shower wall -Removed the ceiling in the basement -Replaced gypsum on the wall and ceiling of the kitchen -Installed a frost-free outdoor faucet -Removed some wall cabinets in the basement

I had the pleasure of working with Home Tailors after moving into a historical home that sorely needed some targeted updates. From the first encounter with Tim Canfield, i was sure this was the contractor who could best help me with the transformation I was seeking. I initially heard about Home Tailors from a subcontractor who highly recommended the company, and it seems Home Tailors has a well-deserved reputation in St. Paul for thoughtfully restoring and remodeling historical homes. Both Tim and Jade, the company's designer, listened carefully to what I was hoping to achieve (renovate the second-floor bathroom, convert a small second-floor bedroom into a laundry room, and tackle some major issues in the basement to prep for eventual finishing). One of my favorite parts of the initial process was reviewing the design options. Jade drafted three to four layouts for each area under consideration. Each design addressed my "must-haves" in unique ways. Envisioning the spaces via these carefully conceived blueprints was the perfect way to launch the project. Once the designs were set, Tim and Jade did a fantastic job guiding me through the selection process. They offered parameters and input when requested, but I felt ownership over the materials I selected. The carpenters who work for Home Tailors are truly wonderful. Of everyone who came and went over the several-month renovation, I came to know the carpenters best because of the sheet amount of time they spent here. Creative, talented, thorough, kind...just a few words to describe them. I always felt at home with them in my living space. They went the extra mile time and time again. And after seeing just what a large role the carpenters had in every facet of this renovation, I am so thankful for their expert skills. I also had good experiences with all of Home Tailors' subcontractors (plumbers, HVAC, electricians, painter, etc). Everyone was friendly, efficient, and mindful of being in someone's living space. I was impressed with the transparency of the contract and the meticulous documentation of modifications to the project's scope as we went along. I had access to the precise cost of each component of the renovation. This was a refreshing contrast to a past experience with another contractor (different house), where costs seemed hidden and lumped together. Home Tailors undertakes the design and renovation process with candor, enthusiasm, and the promise to do the job right. I felt that Tim was truly an advocate for me, always trying to ensure that I received the advantage in any situation. I highly recommend this company and its team of subcontractors for any home renovation projects you may be considering.

Tim and his team was very good at coming out and looking at the scope of the project. It took a little proding to get a quote, only received the painters quote which seemed a little high to us. Tim said that then the rest of the project would probably be outside our budget and he wanted to bow out of the bid. He was short staffed as it was. I guess we were disappointed in his lack of desire to discuss what other items we wanted completed such as the doors and flooring. I took time from work to meet with this staff and I guess he was not interested in doing the other part of the project outside of the painting. He seems to do a good job for others though. Maybe we just were not a good fit for him or he is super busy, which we are running into a lot from other contractors. I would not use them again for the bid when we remodel the kitchen however I would not disway others from contacting him, for he seems knowlegable and would probably do a good job.
Description of Work: We had requested a quote for some door replacement, flooring replacement, repair and painting of 95% of inside of large home. Some odds and end work inside.

Regarding [member name removed]; [member name removed] response is accurate and fair. She points out the project consisted primarily of interior surface repairs and painting. As a result of this and the fact that her home is on the outside edge of our geographic work area, I felt she would be better served by a direct quote from my painter. And, as [member name removed] notes in her response, there were odds and ends to do, which I believed would be more economically and sustainably accomplished by a more local contractor, or even a local Big Box store with their respective trades people. [member name removed] also correctly points out that many of us are very busy and that my “lack of desire” is really an inability to provide the level of service we strive to provide and certainly what she deserves. It also seemed to me that our commuting distance involved so much time that the necessary price would include money she did not need to spend. I do not always know that before traveling to client’s home and combining that with the actual nature of the work. [member name removed] was gracious in accepting my apology and allowing us a C grade.

He was very honest when it came to the pricing and told me he could only do a ballpark over the phone and that the price could change once eh came out. He was very thorough about each step that his workers would have do to complete the job. He gave info on how he did the estimates of pricing. Unfortunately, I did not go with this company due to finding someone who could get out quicker and complete the job quicker. He reassured me that for such a small job, if I found someone reputable, that he recommend that I go with them and if I had any problems to let him know.

Home Tailors was 30 minutes late for the appointment and had not communicated that they would be late (no call/no email) - I had honestly thought they were not going to show up. He looked over the prelimary drawings for a very short time and quoted an estimate 2.5 times higher than 2 other reputable firms. After asking my budget for the project he then cautioned me against using another firm that said they could do the project for my budget. From the cost estimate he provided I wondered if he did not want the job.

This regards Member Comments from my visit on June 27th, 2013. I understand how it feels to have a dream that depends on the performance of others. I also understand how we hope for project costs to meet our budget, contractors who listen and show up on-time. I understand how my visit fell short. In this case I was late due to a client’s needs on a job in progress. For safety sake I chose not to call while driving. Once arrived, I did my best to expedite the meeting as it was rather obvious I was no longer welcome. Still, I reviewed the plans and site conditions. Before asking for a budget number, I shared my thoughts on a rough price range which was accurate and fair. My caution to her was in her best interest and not an attempt to regain my chance at doing her project.

This is our second remodeling project with Home Tailors. Things I have MOST appreciated with this company are: 1) Their designer, Jade, is amazing. She came up with a plan in the space of a galley kitchen and small dining room to utilize every possible inch, make it feel bigger...and add great design. 2) It would be impossible for this typical homeowner to schedule all of the contractors, building inspections, delivery of materials and over all coordination of the project. It was seamless. 3) We were at work everyday and felt very comfortable with the carpenter and contractors being in our home - they were punctual, very neat and respectful of our home. 4) We were given a start and end date and both were met. 5) There will be "glitches" with remodeling and Home Tailors really went to bat for us to resolve an issue so that we could retain our design selections and stay on schedule. 6) Communication is a real strength of theirs. We always knew what to expect. Jade is very attentive to questions and concerns. 7) They were able to accommodate any additional work we requested along the way. 8)We could not be happier with our beautiful kitchen/dining area - Jade made wonderful recommendations and helped with the selections to make the vision we had become a reality!

Home Tailor initially told us it'll take them about one week to complete the estimate, but instead it took them 4!. They had twice told us it'd be ready soon when it's not. Luckily we have lined up another contractor who is very responsive to our needs and completed our estimate in only 3 days and the price is very reasonable.

These members statements are correct. We did not get back to them as soon as we should have and in the time frame we had promised. We are pleased they had a back-up contractor. We do our best to be forthright about our ability to provide a timely, accurate and detailed estimate. In spite of our intentions, we disappointed [member's name removed] and wish to extend an apology to both homeowners. We also appreciate the feedback that Angie's list allows. They did work about ten years ago. They did a great job. I have no complaints. There designs were creative. We ended up using the designs. They were a little expensive.
Description of Work: I used the services of Home Tailors for building design. They did some plans for our house.
It took us a while to decide what part of our project we wanted to do in this first phase of construction, but once we did Home Tailors was very quick to get started. The only slow part for us was waiting for the flooring to arrive because it was specialized flooring to prevent any potential moisture issues from the basement (vinyl with a rubber base--quite beautiful and nothing like the vinyl tile we all remember from the 70's). Tim and Jade were easy to work with and all of the subcontractors were great too. They were prompt and very neat. They always kept us appraised of the timeline, costs, etc. There were never any surprises. All estimates were exact and accurate. We would definitely hire them again (and to finish the rest of e basement when the funds become available).
Description of Work: We partially finished our basement by having it framed out, walls and flooring installed and all of the electrical done. We made it into a workout room and office/guest bedrroom. We did not finish the bathroom or laundry room atnthis point in time. We wanted to do the project in phases due to our own cash flow issues. Home Tailors was very easy to work with and very flexible and understanding.

Have had Home Tailors do several projects at our home and have been very happy with all experiences. They have become our "go-to" contractor of choice any time we have repair or remodeling needs. This particular project took 5 days and went without a hitch. They started the project when they said they would, cleaned up meticulously at the end of each day (a huge deal for me and my wife), and finished on time and on budget. And the finished product was outstanding - very high quality workmanship. My only critique is that they seem to be a bit more expensive than other contractors. But after using them several times the value became clear to me - their reliability, consistency, conscientious construction crews and high quality was worth every penny.

We had been thinking about remodeling our bathroom for quite some time. We spent hours with the designer of Home Tailors, who is expert at seeing the big picture, capturing the essence of what would please the us, and making suggestions we didn't even know would be possible. She shopped with us to guide us in the selections of the tile and all the fixtures. When we became overwhelmed, she would carefully present a few options and narrow down what would work best. We met with the carpenter and all of the contractors, who did a walk through before the project started so we would know what to expect. The first thing the carpenter did was to create a dust-barrier wall so it minimized the dust to the rest of the house. Runners were in place so the floors were protected. And, being particular about a clean house, the carpenter was fastidious in cleaning up every night! (most appreciated) The bathroom was totally gutted, a wall was moved and plumbing had to be relocated. At that point I have to admit I was a bit nervous! But everyone assured me once that was done, I would enjoy seeing it come together. And that is exactly what happened! There was one glitch early on, as the bathtub was being installed. The carpenter noticed a small hairline crack in the corner, one that we certainly did not see. He was not satisfied in moving forward so a new tub was ordered - the designer spent a lot of time finding another one to be shipped as soon as possible. But in order to keep going, other things were scheduled so we didn't have to halt all progress. It was amazing to see the new fixtures, the cambria tub surround, the custom vanity and new space come together. We had some other work added as we went along and couldn't be happier with everything that was completed. A real bonus was that everything was completed one week earlier than was promised! We hear so much about projects running over the time, but Home Tailors was UNDER that time! One of my favorite bathrooms is in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. My new bathroom is just as lovely - very calming and spa-like, even better than I had envisioned! *DO use Home Tailors for a great remodeling experience. We are now starting on another bathroom and then on to the kitchen!
Description of Work: Home Tailors PATIENTLY worked with us to design the ideal bathroom from start to finish. This was our first total remodel and complete gut of the bathroom so we depended on their guidance and expertise. The owner of the company, the designer and carpenter, and all of the contractors communicated with us to keep us informed of what would take place. All scheduling was done through Home Tailors so we didn't have to worry about coordinating any part of the project. A lock box was in place so we didn't even have to be here. *DO rely on them to properly schedule the sequence of the work As we became confident in the quality of the work, we added other electrical and plumbing work that needed to be done. *DO use them to improve other areas of your home during the project We listened to all of their suggestions and "went" with all of them - many we had not ever considered. *DO be open to the possibilities of the project - they are experts in satisfying their customers. They listen, make suggestions and figure out how to deliver excellent service. *DO expect great communication from everyone you will be working with - they are great at keeping you informed.

This was a big project and the first time I've done anything like this, so I thought a lot about what I wanted and needed from a contractor. It was important to me that the contractor I chose be someone who would be focused on me and my house, be a good listener and good communicator, to help me achieve what I wanted and, at times, help me figure out what I wanted. It was also important to me that the contractor I worked with understand and have experience working with old houses. I wanted to know that we shared values and a philosophy about what it meant to undertake a project like this. I sought someone committed to quality, who utilized craftspeople who really cared about their work; someone who gave attention to detail, all the details, who understood that a small thing could make a big difference, who was not satisfied with good enough. I wanted someone who had an approach that would keep me involved, answer my questions, give me as much information as I wanted, help me work my way through decisions and support those decisions. Since this project would take months, I also wanted to work with people I liked. Tim and Jade from Home Tailors fit the bill for all of the above, and they gave me an experience and a result with which I'm extremely happy and satisfied. In the planning and design stage, Tim and Jade worked with me, patiently, to assure that we arrived at a final plan that really fit what I wanted and could achieve. During the actual work, they followed a process that was the least disruptive possible, flexible. The workers were all pleasant, interested, considerate. The craftspeople were careful, dedicated professionals. Home Tailors remained involved and responsive throughout the process until the last tiny detail was completed. The result is a lovely "new" home, with an addition that looks like it was original, a kitchen that is modern and efficient yet retains the character of the house, new spaces that delight, and lovely touches throughout.
Description of Work: Tim Canfield, owner, and Jade Zurn, designer, worked with me to come up with a design that fit my needs, offered modern conveniences and yet maintained the feel and craftsmanship of my 1914 house. The project included: Gut and completely recreate the kitchen; tear off an old addition and build new addition, which included new side entryway, new back entry, laundry room, sun room, bathroom; change main floor stairwell entrance; refinish old floors in the rest of the main floor to match new flooring. It cost $100,000.00 plus.

We hired Home Tailors to put a large egress window in our basement. Communication with staff at Home Tailors was always prompt, comprehensive, professional and easily understandable. Tim Canfield, the business owner, was very clear about our options and the various costs associated with the choices we made regarding the size of the window, the material to line the new window well, etc. Work began and finished on time, even though the window well had to be carefully dug out by hand in order to avoid damaging nearby gas lines. Home Tailors' carpenter was extremely tidy, quiet and respectful of our space. I work from a home office, so this was a huge plus for me. Throughout the process, he explained what he was doing when we had questions, and he kept us updated about his progress. It was very apparent that he was paying meticulous attention to detail as he worked. The end result is a big, beautiful window that lets lots of light into our finished basement, making it feel like a 'real' room, not a dark basement space. It is clear that the work was done right and with quality materials, and will last for many, many years without problems. It was also very clear to me that Tim and his employees are very experienced working on older homes, and that expertise really shows. I have since recommended Home Tailors to numerous friends, and plan to work with them again on future projects.
Description of Work: Home Tailors installed a large egress window in our basement, enabling us to safely use our finished basement space as a television room, a playroom for our children, and a guest bedroom.

It was pretty painless and we encountered little disruption. We had no bathroom for only a couple of days and they worked around our schedules very effectively.
Description of Work: This is the second time I've used Home Tailors -- once was a kitchen remodel, and the second was to improve accessibility in the house. The quality of the work is excellent. Tim knows where to find good people. And if you don't quite know what you want, Tim and his architect-designer will help you. If home is where the heart is, then I wouldn't trust anyone but Home Tailors to remodel it. They were willing to undertake the extraordinary task of updating the heart of my home - the kitchen. It became evident early on in the project that the ultimate strength of Home Tailors is their quality of work. They have a passion for what they do and take great pride in their work. For them, working on a project is not considered a "job". Even though the project has been completed, I continue to be in awe of how they were guided by a blueprint to transform an old, outdated kitchen into a fabulous new kitchen. Also, I was impressed with Home Tailors' unlimited amount of patience to work with a novice client like me who was intent on updating her kitchen. They took an enormous amount of time to teach me the process, educate me on the terms of the trade, and guide me through the decision-making process. The purpose of this project was to update my kitchen for the future but preserve the integrity of the past. Since the house was built in the 1950's, I felt it important that the new design meld with the rest of the house. Not only did Home Tailors achieve that goal; but during the process of remodeling the heart of my home, they preserved its soul.
Description of Work: The Home Tailors team remodeled my outdated 1950's kitchen and modified the main entry to improve the circulation flow of accessing the kitchen and the living room. The kitchen involved tearing out a wall and adding a new window. New cabinets were installed and a banquet eating area was added. Also, built-in pantry cabinets were added along with storage under the banquet seating area. The front entry involved tearing out a closet and then adding two closets across the room. A non-functioning pocket door has been repaired and replaced so it is now functioning. The cove ceiling in the living room has been replicated and matches perfectly to the existing original cove ceiling. A new front entry door has been installed.

They used incredible care throughout the project, working in tight spaces outside. Frigid temperatures and late-season snows--then rain--continuously delayed the work, but Home Tailors smiled through it all. We were very impressed by the skill and knowledge of everyone on the job. In the end, most of the work in not visible because it's inside the retaining wall, but the finishing carpentry on our extended deck is excellent. They also fixed our home's gutter issues, and added a rain garden. Slight design changes were carefully considered and meticulously executed. We can't say enough good about the Home Tailor team.
Description of Work: This complex project included: rebuilding a 25 foot x 60 inch high retaining wall that protects our home's foundation. It also included extending our deck and correcting gutter problems. The original retaining wall was incorrectly constructed and was moving away from the foundation, jeopardizing the frost barrier for our three-season room...and also compromising our deck supports. All the electrical services to our home were also encased in the retaining wall. The top of the wall is the walkway from our home to the deck and the backyard. Using designs drawn by a consulting engineer, Home Tailors hand-dug the wall and rebuilt it to exact specifications, with no interruption to our electrical services. They added a water protection barrier and extended our deck over the top of the wall, adding an inset step and lower deck area. They also added new railings that blend seamlessly with the old ones, so the entire finished project looks like it's been there forever. New gutters were built to go through the deck and drain into a new rain garden.

Excellent. The result is beautiful, sturdy, (and warm too). Everyone working on the job was skilled, hardworking, talented, and in all ways outstanding. The new remodel matches the house design. Everything about their work is excellent. They did so much it is hard to describe it all here (design assistance, install 1920s bathroom tile, Toto toilets, plumbing, electric, painting, insulation, lighting, woodworking design expert, refinish wood beam ceiling, new banisters, repair plaster, match moulding to house design, refinished radiator, tile, refinished original tub, etc. etc. etc. It has been almost a year since the job was completed and everything stills works beautifully and looks magnificent. You cannot go wrong using this contractor.
Description of Work: There were three jobs: 1) a major cosmetic and structural repair of a wood beam and plaster dining room ceiling damaged due to a plumbing leak (about $8,000) in December 2009, 2) a minor remodel of a bathroom for about $3,000, and 3) a large remodel involving three spaces: (a) complete remodel of a large arts and crafts style bathroom (down to studs); (b) adjacent stairwell, and (c) removal and refinish of an improperly plumbed toilet and sink directly above installed in the 1940s (which started leaking). The work was extensive taking about 6-9 weeks in 2010 and cost about $44,000. These figures include structural issues discovered when original walls were opened and extras we elected to include to match the historical design of the house.

They really listened to what my needs were and even came up with ideas I never would have thought of. They are very thorough. They also took me to see some of the work that they have done. Their proposal was a lot higher than I wanted to spend for the basement, however, knowing they do such quality work I would contact them to do other areas of my house.
Description of Work: I have seen several homes where they have done the design and build work for, all of them beautiful. I had them do design work for my basement........they did 3 different plans, all of them great. It was hard to chose which one I liked best. They were great taking things I needed and wanted into consideration.

Very smoothly. They are extremely professional, well-groomed, on time and friendly. They took the time to look into getting me special glue that would be less toxic as I have some chemical sensitivity, and even offered to get me special plywood as well. They were very careful about sealing off the areas they worked in. They were also extremely communicative. They really went out of their way. One of the most pleasant experiences I've ever had with someone working in my home.
Description of Work: Worked on floors to prepare for new hardwood flooring. We had already pulled up the carpet and pad. Home Tailors removed all the staples, pulled up particle board, and replaced with plywood where needed. They leveled the floor in my family room by pulling up the plywood and shimming the joists to get rid of the 2" (from one wall to the other) difference in floor height. They also got rid of our "step down" living room by building a slight deck between the front entry and the dining room, so it is all now one large area. They made it all level and ready for hardwood floors to go down. A different company did that work.
Everyone connected with Home Tailors was kind, courteous and talented. I simply can't say enough about what a pleasure it was to work with them. Because I kept finding more things that needed repairs (and also because Andersen Windows fairly often delivered the wrong items) the project took much longer than I expected but this was not the fault of Home Tailors. Each time there was a change, I received a written change order. Tim Canfield took time to explain the charges. I think the cost was somewhat high but the quality of the work is outstanding. If you want integrity, a high level of service and craftsmanship, call Home Tailors.
Description of Work: Our 1976 house needed many repairs. The diagonal siding was rotting at the base, it was removed and replaced with a "skirt". Windows and sliding doors were replaced. Walls were removed and replaced with new sheet-rock. Bathroom vent was replaced. Tile around shower/tub was replaced. New window ledge was built. A support beam was replaced & in the process the sagging ceiling was slowly jacked back into place. Faucets were replaced in two bathrooms. "Stems" were replaced in faucets. A new outlet was added and other electrical repair was done. A bathroom ceiling was repaired and refinished. A chair-rail was added to a bathroom. Some old exterior siding and trim was replaced with new.
