He showed up early on a holiday to do the work which was not appreciated. The bushes were trimmed way too much and looked bad. He added costs along the way. When we called him to say we weren't happy with the work he set up a time to come back and meet with us. Then he came at a different time when we weren't home and called us to say the work looked o.k. to him. We were very disappointed by the work done and the lack of follow up.
Description of Work: He was asked to trim the bushes, weed the beds, put in a border around landscaping and add mulch

Overall it went quite well - see above. As with any yard work, it's up to the owner to keep up with it over time. My wife and I will be empty nesters pretty soon and we may move to a smaller house in the coming years. It'll be nice to enjoy the yard now in our remaining years in the house.
Description of Work: I had let our backyard go for years and it had been overtaken by weeds, and our female boxer (and last winter) had destroyed much of the grass. Flower beds that ringed the backyard had long been overgrown with unknown and aggressive species of plants - I had no idea what was worth keeping and what were just weeds. I paid Dao $3000 and in two days he completely transformed our backyard, which measures approx. 40 feet x 60 feet. He dug up the lawn, and leveled the backyard with 4 cubic yards of fresh black dirt and top soil. In the process he added three layers of fresh grass seed. (He had indicated that our yard was not a very good candidate for sod because of the amount of shade.) I believe he does use sod at times too. As to the beds, first he added a ring of pavers to separate the beds from the lawn, then his team ridded them of weeds and dug down about 4 inches, filling in them space with 5 - 6 inches deep of fresh hardwood mulch. (I'm not sure how much mulch this was but it must have been dozens of bags worth.) Finally, he added new shade perennials (mostly hostas), and spaced the plants that I had, quite well. He seems very knowledgeable on plants. The whole effort took two full days and Dao's team ( of four workers) worked about 6 - 8 hours each day to get the job done. At this point, 2.5 weeks later all the new grass seed is germinating and fresh grass is coming up. My only job has been to water it daily for about 10 - 15 mins. Fortunately, we've had largely cool, wet weather and the grass is coming in quite well. All in all, I'm very satisfied. $3,000 is a lot of money to us, but considering that we'd let the backyard go untended (other than mowing) for 16 years, I think the results are pretty amazing. One of our neighbors asked if she could come over at times to visit our new "park."

Dao was very prompt to come to my house for an estimate and was able to provide phone numbers for two people who'd had work done recently to be used as references. When I called him back to say I wanted to proceed, I had to leave a message. He did not call me back, so I called again in a few days and he picked up this time. He was back out to my house within an hour to discuss details, then sped away to order the necessary materials. He started work at about 9:00 AM the next morning, and was finished by 1:00 PM, supplying several tons of boulders as a border to an irregular oval garden and dirt to fill it. He did not put in the plants, which I wanted to do, anyway. His orignal estimate of the project was $1,300, and when he finished, he told me he had had to use more dirt than originally estimated by $50, which I paid. Having read another review on Angie's List, I knew he would expect a check at the time of project completion.
Description of Work: Dao created a raised garden with the border comprised of foot-diameter boulders.

Dao came to give me an estimate the same day I called. The estimate seemed reasonable, so I hired him. He and his crew arrived before 7 a.m. the next day, and absolutely transformed the backyard. They cleaned everything up quite well, too. I did get one sort of surprise. I had asked them to remove a buck thorn and we agreed on a price for it, but once the branches were all cut off, Dao asked if I wanted the stump removed too, and that was extra. I don't think the price was unreasonable, but I had assumed that removing the bush included the stump. I will be more clear next time. The only tricky part was that he wanted to be paid each day for that day's work, and he wanted a local check (not my cash advance checks). It wasn't really a problem, but I hadn't thought to ask about payment options ahead of time. Overall I was very pleased. My next-door neighbors couldn't believe the transformation either, so they hired Dao to do some work in their yard too.
Description of Work: Dao and his men removed four shrubs, and a HUGE buck thorn, as well as many smaller weed trees and shrubs. They also did some pruning of my large elm trees and cleaned up and trimmed my landscape plants. My yard was a mess. All the way around the perimeter of my yard, the weeds had grown up through the rocks. Plants that were supposed to be there were way overgrown, and many more had appeared and flourished. I asked them to remove our "toy-eating bush," a large juniper growing around the base of a crabapple. It turned out to be three bushes, and they had completely removed them (roots too) by mid-morning. I couldn't believe the transformation in such a short time! They kept working for two days solid and thoroughly cleaned out all the weeds and trimmed my lilacs and other landscape plants. Now I can see the fences. I actually like my yard again!
