A wonderful experience. One of the reasons I selected them after 4 other bids is that they really seemed to understand the engineering challenge presented by my yard. The guys on the job (other than Jarrod who was at site nearly all the time) were extremely professional -- my neighbor appreciated that they were so careful not to disturb her new planting beds. The workmanship is tops and for all that they did, I thought the price was very fair. All of my neighbors and folks just walking by compliment me on the beautiful wall -- such an improvement. They started on time and worked consistently although they finish a bit later than originally expected. My only (and not serious by any means) disappointment was the communication at times between the plan Eden drew up and the execution by Jarrod. Other than that minor thing, it was really great work and I will be calling them next year for the back yard!
Description of Work: Bluhm Brothers planned and installed a 2 tier versalok stone retaining wall across the front of my very steeply sloped property, 2 sets of versalok stairs, a herringbone pattern stone walk from one stair to the other, and a landing, as well as graded the front yard, laid sod and mulch, and planted in the retaining wall beds/mulch area.

These guys are awesome! We scheduled the work for June 26. Little did we know it would end up being the hottest muggiest day of the year. The crew, headed up by John Bluhm, showed up at 8 am, along with Lucy who had come originally to work up the estimate. John, Lucy, and I walked the yard and discussed the project for a few minutes. Lucy left and the guys got to work. Luckily, there was just enough clearance to get the Bobcat in the yard. They worked like animals despite the heat. I was amazed by the thoroughness and speed. They did battle with the tree roots alone for an hour! The crew was done, cleaned up after themselves (even swept the street) and gone at 6 pm. Because the tree roots were such a problem and more soil was required, the final bill increased $200. That's OK and we gladly paid. These guys were worth every penny. Eden Bluhm came to visit a week later when we were concerned about the sod. This company cares about your needs and happiness.
Description of Work: Removed debris left over from last summer's tree removal. Removed all existing sod in suburban backyard. Removed 2 steel clothesline poles. Re-graded the sloped area of backyard. Removed as many tree roots as possible. Filled and compacted area of old tree. Spread topsoil. Laid new sod. Planted new tree.

Overall excellent. Recommend without hesitation. Had frustrating experience with competitor who came out ($50) and quoted one price, then come to measure, draw plans ($200) and the final quote was almost double! Bluhm was $2000 less than the competitor. Bluhm does free consultations, had two experienced people come (took a few days after my initial call) drew up plans in the truck with estimate, took about half an hour. Final price was estimate plus fee for some materials we decided to add during the project. Crew was courteous and professional, came on time, brought extra crew on last day to finish before expected rain. Replanted any plants they removed, took away plants I didn't want, finished in 2 1/2 days. Watered plants that were exposed during the project. Looks great, sod took really well. Explained everything. Came by wih extra sand to fill in where it had settled after the patio went through its first rains. No complaints.
Description of Work: Removed old cracked cement slab and walkway (was pooling water and leaking into our basement) regraded entire backyard and set 200 square foot paver patio with new grade to drain away from house. Regraded, sodded portion of yard. Removed shrubs, new edging. Buried downspouts.

Eden arrived on time for the estimate and walked me through what they would do to my backyard. He explained why and how they would do the job, as well as other options I had. He was very knowledgeable and personable. I was given an estimate on the spot. When I called to accept the work, they were able to schedule it the following week. Eden and the crew arrived on time and he walked me through everything they would be doing that day. When I came home after work, the job was completely done and John was just finishing up with watering. John walked me through directions on watering, when to mow and how to care for the lawn. He also gave me his number in case I had any questions regarding the sod. Overall, the experience was great and I would hire them again for any future landscaping, in fact, my mom is going to call them for work as well.
Description of Work: Bluhm Brothers tore out my existing backyard, tilled, graded, laid new sod, mulch, stepping stones and installed window wells. They also fixed some existing flower beds and installed edging.

The project didn't go as smoothly as I was led to believe. I had tried to get Eden, the sales guy, to take the rain garden design document with him so they could review it in advance. I was told that John would look at the rain garden design the day of to figure out what needed to be done. Instead, he expected to be told what to do, and I didn't know offhand. So, we had to sit and figure things out after he made a call back to the office to yell at people. I was told that they would take good care of my existing plants; they did not. I had indicated that I wanted the dirt from the front yard to be used to grade the backyard. Instead, they brought clean fill, which was not indicated on the work proposal. The major goof-up they did was not installing a drain line at a proper grade. They had to dig it out and make it deeper. If I hadn't noticed that before they had everything buried, I would have had a huge mess on my hands. I also wasn't happy with the resodding they did.
Description of Work: I had them grade the backyard, install 4 drain lines, excavate a rain garden and install edging.

EVERY PROJECT WE COMPLETE IS BACKED WITH A HARD WORKING STAFF AND THEIR EXPERIENCE. AS FAR AS THIS PROJECT, BLUHM BROTHERS APOLOGIZES IF SHE FELT DIFFERENTLY! WHEN I SHOWED UP FOR HER FREE ESTIMATE SHE TOLD ME SHE WANTED A RAIN GARDEN INSTALLED, I INFORMED HER WE DIDN'T HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA. I TOLD HER I ATTENDED A TWO HOUR SEMINAR ON RAIN GARDENS, BUT HAVE NEVER DONE ONE. I ALSO INFORMED HER AT THE SEMINAR THEY ADVISED US, OUR CLIENTS SHOULD CALL THEIR WATER SHED DISTRICT BEFORE HAVING ONE INSTALLED! SHE INSISTED SHE KNEW WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE, SHE SHOWED ME TWO SEPARATE PLANS SHE HAD BEEN WORKING ON FOR TWO YEARS AND WAS READY FOR IT TO BE DONE! SO SHE HIRED US TO DO THE EXCAVATION FOR IT. SHE AGREED TO BE HOME TO INFORM THE CREW ON THE LAYOUT, AND DEPTS OF HER RESEARCH. AFTER THIS WAS PERFORMED, JOHN BLUHM AND HIS CREW DID THE WORK. AS FAR AS HER PLANTS, I PERSONALLY HELPED HER MOVE THEM, AND I WAS VERY CAREFUL. JUST TO TOUCH BASE ON THE DRAIN LINE, SHE WAS THE ONE THAT REQUESTED IT BE BURIED DEEPER, IT WAS INSTALLED PROPERLY THE FIRST TIME AND WOULD HAVE DRAINED THE WATER JUST FINE TO THE RAIN GARDEN! SHE ALSO INDICATED WORKING WITH JOHN BLUHM WAS UNPLEASANT, THAT IS NEWS TO US, ALL OF OUR CLIENTS RAVE ABOUT HIM! ALL JOBS PERFORMED BY BLUHM BROTHERS ARE RAN BY A BUSINESS OWNER. THIS PARTICULAR JOB WAS UNORGANIZED DUE TO THE HOMEOWNERS UNORGANIZED RESEARCH. WE TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN GIVING CLIENTS WHAT THEY'VE PAID FOR, AND THEN SOME. THANKS, EDEN BLUHM

I watched the men work: despite access issues, they graded with new topsoil, laid the sod well and edged with a plastic border. After they left, there were about three places that I wanted to tamp down to get better contact with the earth. They left instructions about watering daily at first and then mowing with a high setting, until the sod takes root: easy to follow. The 4 workmen, supervised by John Bluhm, were capable and diligent. Finished in half a day, cleaned up well. Did some extra landscape cleanup around the edges, much appreciated.
Description of Work: I agreed with Eden Bluhm to resod my back and side yards for $2500: about 2000 square feet. After they arrived to do the work, they uncovered a buckthorn stump hiding under the weeds, which I had forgotten, and suggested to bring in a guy who removes stumps, at extra cost. Their workmen didn't know about this, and removed the stump by hand. I added $100 for the extra work. The blue grass lawn looks superb (two weeks after installation). Eden and I had discussed the rather deep shade over these areas, and Eden said it would work with as little as 1 hour/day of sun. Cliff Lambert of Lambert landscaping (952-935-6857) said it wouldn't work under such deep shade, and didn't enter a bid for the job, although his price might have been $700 less. We shall see, in about 3 years!

They arrived promptly and kept working until the job was done. They worked really hard all day long in 90 degree heat. They listened politely to my friendly Mother and Brother. They tried to save some of my flowers so that I could attempt to replant them later. They do good work and I will recommend them to others.
Description of Work: They graded the back yard so rain water will flow away from foundation of the house and not into the basement. They installed window wells around the basement windows. They removed plants, flowers, weeds and small trees that were growing around the back of the house. Then they leveled it off and then put down dirt and mulch approximately four feet wide all around the back of the foundation of the house. This should stop the weed and tree seedling problem. Then they put down black dirt on the whole back yard lawn area and put down sod. They picked up and hauled away all yard waste that needed to be disposed of. They started by 7:30 in the morning and stayed until they were done at 5:00 p.m. They worked real hard all day and it was in the 90s. THESE ARE REALLY HARD WORKERS.

It went very smoothly. The Bluhm Brothers arrived on time to do the work and completed it in one day, as promised. I worked at home during the project, and they were very quiet (no radios or loud discussions, just their equipment). They cleaned up immediately afterward. When I asked for a touch-up, they agreed on the spot. They also gave us information afterward on how to maintain the new lawn.

Overall, I think Bluhm Brothers did very nice work, and they were quite professional, when compared to other companies I called. As opposed to other contractors who wanted to bid on the job over the phone, Bluhm Brothers came out to see the site before providing a bid. Their bid was more detailed than the others, and Eden was more customer friendly than the other companies I called. The work was done in 2 days, and the finished product is beautiful. There are just a couple of things that I would say could have been better. First, their price was not great. The 10% Angie's List discount really just gets them down to a competitive price. Therefore, I didn't really see that as a discount. Second, Eden told me the tree work might just be a "gas charge" for picking up the tree. He even suggested that it might be done for free. In the end, I was charged $122, which I thought was a lot for the little work involved. Other than this, I would highly recommend Bluhm Brothers.
Description of Work: Bluhm Brothers installed a 12' x 14' raised garden in our back yard. The retaining wall around the garden is made of Versa-Lok blocks and stands approximately 18" tall. When they were finished building the garden, they filled it with a gardening soil mixture so that all we had to do is plant our vegetable garden. In addition, Bluhm Brothers picked up a tree we purchased at a nursery and installed it after they removed a dead tree at our request. The garden work was $3,628, and the tree work was $122.

I've had a contract with Bluhm Brothers for about five years. They do very good work and have always been reliable. My only frustration with them have been the annual fee increases of about 5% a year, even in years where so little snow fell they didn't have to come out even once during some months.

Response from Bluhm Brothers Landscaping Inc
I SHOWED UP TO HER RESIDENCE, AND KINDLY INTRODUCED MYSELF. SHORTLY AFTER THAT WE WERE IN FRONT OF HER HOUSE GOING OVER HER LANDSCAPE NEEDS. AS I PROCEEDED WITH GENERAL QUESTIONS, SHE WAS BAD MOUTHING THE PREVIOUS LANDSCAPER THAT SHE HAD HIRED TO DO THE SAME WORK SHE WANTED ME TO DO. THEN I EXPLAINED TO HER HOW BLUHM BROTHERS WOULD PROPERLY FIX HER GRADE ISSUE. AFTER GOING OVER THE FRONT FOUNDATION GRADE, SHE HAD AN ISSUE ON THE WEST YARD DRAIN, THAT THE PREVIOUS LANDSCAPER HAD INSTALLED. I GAVE HER A MINOR SOLUTION/PRICE TO THE PROBLEM. AS WE WERE WRAPPING UP HER FREE ESTIMATE, I ASKED HER IF SHE WANTED ME TO INCLUDE A PRICE FOR REMOVAL OF ROCK FROM HER FRONT ENTRANCE GARDEN. HER RESPONSE WAS YES! AS FAR AS ME BEING RUDE, I FELT THE OPPOSITE. I WAS ON TIME IN THE POORING RAIN. SHE HAD A MAJOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT GOING ON, I FELT I WAS VERY POLITE CONSIDERING THE CHAOTIC ENVIROMENT I WAS DOING MY FREE ESTIMATE IN. I WROTE UP THE WHOLE JOB, GAVE HER A COPY OF THE ESTIMATE. I TOLD HER IF SHE HAD ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CALL, AND WE WOULD BE IN TOUCH! THREE DAYS LATER BLUHM BROTHERS' SECRETARY CALLED THE MEMBER; THERE WAS NO ANSWER. SHE LEFT A MESSAGE AND WE HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM SINCE! THANKS MUCH, EDEN BLUHM. BLUHM BROTHERS INC. 651-227-2584.

Showed up as scheduled; very pleasant and nice to work with.
My call was returned a week after I left a message. The appt for an estimate was made very quickly, within a day or two. Eden came out and was very enthusiastic about the job. They do not supply shrubs or trees or help with the decision, so I would have to go to the nursery, choose what we would like, and have Bluhm Bros pick it up. My life is hectic, and that is an inconvenience. Eden was very nice, and otherwise helpful, and they were able to start the job the next week. His bid seemed high to me, especially since I was doing some running around. But it was the first bid, so I didn't know. I was surprised when another company submitted a bid that was half the price and included the cost of shrubs and tree, with multiple suggestions for each. They seem like a great company, with good ''grades'' from other clients. We just couldn't justify spending that much money when someone would do it for half the amount. We will consider them for other projects.
Description of Work: They removed 3 shrubs and double-grinded tree stump. They graded a small hill to match the angle of the new stairs and sod area. They planted 2 shrubs, and a tree was purchased elsewhere.

Eden Bluhm met me at our home and immediately had thorough but reasonable recommendation on how to regrade and improve the flow around our foundation, and how to set the groundwork (literally) for some future gardening around the property. His original price estimate was around $3000, but he applied the full Angie's List discount and even knocked a bit more off just to make us feel better. Their price was much more reasonable than other estimates we received. Their crew arrived on the appointed day (just a week or so after his initial estimate), and they knocked out the entire job that day with no complaints. We are very pleased with the end results, and we would certainly hire Bluhm Brothers again in the future.
Description of Work: Regraded around foundation of house where water was seeping in and placed a new layer of topsoil and mulch all the way around. Also replaced old mulch in garden areas to match new mulch around house. Cleared and hauled away dead plants, old rock, and other debris.
