On my first call, I left a message for a call-back and it took two weeks of phone tag and three different individuals to get an on-site appointment scheduled. With each of the three people, I had to explain what I wanted to have done and then got passed on to the next person. All in all, it was over a month from first call to when they were scheduled to show up for the on-site visit. When the day for the site visit arrived, it was cancelled due to their representative having car troubles (understandable, life happens). However, the person did not call to relay the car trouble issues, instead I had to call them after twenty minutes of waiting and leave a message (do not expect to have them answer their phones, you will always have to leave a message). After five minutes, the call was returned and the situation explained. At that point we rescheduled the site visit for two weeks later. When that day came, we again waited twenty minutes and called their representative. No surprise, had to leave a message again. After a few minutes, their representative called back and informed us that she had not written down our name or phone number, but did have the time blocked out. So, after a month and a half and three hours of time taken off from work for my wife and myself, we still did not have a site visit. It was at this point we decided to end the relationship with this company. Overall, from my first contact with the company, I had an inkling that this wasn't a very professional company from the standpoint of customer service. They seemed very disorganized and had too many people involved in simply scheduling a site visit. We really like the pictures of the work that they have done shown on their website, but if you are to choose them, be ready for the possibility of communication breakdown and a confusing chain of delegation. If I were to recommend one thing for this company, it would be to get a professional person to handle customer interaction. I hate salespeople as much as the next person, but they do serve a valuable function in that they know how to interact with and satisfy customers.

They got to our job quickly, and the crew did great job of getting the job done, and did it in one day. They also did a great job of cleaning up. I was glad to have them both explain the care of the plants and new sod, as well as leave some information I can refer to for the first couple weeks of getting the sod established. We expect we will be calling them again when we are ready to tackle the back yard.
Description of Work: The service performed was to design new landscaping for the front yard, remove the od rock and some tree stumps, put in new plants, mulch and sod. The design was exactly what we were looking for - clean and simple.

Worked with Lucy on a backyard patio design and some new tree, shrub, and perennial plantings. Had both Bluhm brothers working the job. Everything looks fantastic. Pricing was about in the middle of the pack. But they delivered on the most unique and interesting design and use of the space. Very quick work and excellent cleanup.

Once we accepted the proposal, the salesman gave us a date to perform the work. He called me a couple of times and we agreed on a date. The day the work was to be done, the crew showed up on time, as scheduled. They had several workers and several trucks with all of the equipment that they needed to complete the work. They even had a portable outhouse for the crew, so that they didn't track dirt into our house. They did everything the salesman said they would. They were quick and efficient. They took great care to protect our existing yard, as well as to cleanup everything when they were done. They even accommodated a last minute request to cull out and edge a spot for a garden. VERY PROFESSIONAL. They exceeded our expectations.
Description of Work: We back up to a small creek, and there was quite a slope down through our backyard. The slope was very uneven with large 'bowls', and the grass was very sparse. We wanted the yard to be graded with a gradual slope down to the creek, and sod to be planted. The salesman came out and after taking measurements and reviewing our request, came up with a proposal on the spot. He gave us a very thorough description of the work they would do, and why it needed to be done that way. It entailed removing all of the existing grass, and then completely regrading the yard, before adding topsoil and sodding. He even looked at how he would get his equipment down to the backyard without damaging and of our existing yard.

We originally called Bluhm Brothers to come out and give us an estimate on doing a retaining wall in the front yard. The existing pile of rocks was unsightly and falling rocks were risking my children's toes on a daily basis. Eden showed up exactly as scheduled onTuesday and discussed the project with us. After a short discussion Eden recommended that we do not need a retaining wall at all and that re-grading the lawn and re-sodding would be a far better solution ( and considerably less expensive) than building a wall. We also asked him to look at the back yard and he agreed it was is dire need of re-grading and new sod. Our yard had been through a variety of DIY landscaping efforts over the years and was horribly un-level and between seed and sod probably had 6 varieties of grasses. We called Eden the next day and told him to go ahead with the project. He informed me that he needed to check with the sod farm to make sure they were ready to proceed. He did not want to leave me with a mud pit for two weeks waiting for sod, but reassured me that we would have a new lawn within 10 days. Eden called in Friday morning and said they would be there on Tuesday morning (one week after the estimate). The crew showed up and got to work right away. They made great progress and before we knew it they were done and gone as quickly as they showed up. We could not have been happier with the results. The yard looks fantastic and we are so appreciative for Eden's recommendation on grading vs. building a wall. If we had gone the wall route we would have a wall and junky looking remainder to our yard. Thanks to Eden and his crew we have a complete yard renovation and are looking forward to a great summer enjoying it. The only issue we had with the whole project was an issue with our gate not swinging correctly after raising the ground and sod. I called Eden the day after we noticed it and one of his brothers showed up within a couple hours and remedied the issue by raising the gate a couple inches. I would strongly recommend the Bluhm Brothers for your next landscaping project. We live in a house built in 1906 and have had a lot of work done. This project was one of the only ones we have been 100% satisfied with. We will see you when I convince my wife to do the patio. Thanks Bluhm Brothers.
Description of Work: Removed existing lawn and rock pile. Re-graded entire yard front and back and re-sodded yard. Also removed and replanted haste and lilies.

I am dismayed to write this bad review and I admit I have put it off (only my boyfriend nagging me about "That's what Angie's List is FOR" got me to write it). I wanted so much for my first Angie's List experience to go well. The company was clearly swamped with responses after the "Big Deal" and the person who contacted me seemed to be a recent hire and very much an underling. We had trouble setting a time, with changes on both ends, but when we had settled on one, I took the day off work and went home... to wait. And wait. He didn't show up. Okay, fine. Everyone makes mistakes. We rescheduled. When he did come out, I asked him to make a landscape plan only for my backyard, which is in critical condition. I felt that focusing on only half the property would mean a better plan. I was wrong. Part of my landscape crisis is a slowly-collapsing retaining wall. It's the most visible issue, but I already had a plan to repair it. I knew it's dramatic awfulness would draw his attention so I mentioned that and tried to move on. I understand why he wanted to focus on it, but that is not why I had contracted with the company. I described my specific concerns with growing trepidation; he walked around, took some pictures, we chatted a bit and then he left. About a month later (delay was fine; it was not garden season and I had said I was not in a hurry), he e-mailed the plan to me. The address on it was wrong and I was crestfallen to see that it was a re-do of the slumping landscape wall. The uneven, shady problem areas around the edges (either bare dirt or invasive garlic mustard) --the reasons I had specifically purchased this service--were dismissed and labeled only "natural area." Argh! I am not having bare dirt and garlic mustard as "natural areas"! The plan's patio area, at the top of the rededesigned steps, was simple, but did address my need. I really regret buying this service. I had spoken to someone higher at the company when the designer didn't show up. That person seemed very nice and concerned that I be happy. I feel bad posting this review, but it is what happened and I have been thinking about it for six months and felt the responsible thing, in light of the ethos of Angie's List, was to post it.
Description of Work: I purchased an "Angie's List Big Deal" for a landscape plan from this company. I set up a time and one of their employees came out and looked at my property, then about a month later I received the plan.

Dear Member, Yes you are right, Ben is new to Bluhm Brothers Landscaping and He was overwhelmed with 72 Angie's Big Deal landscape designs this past winter season. Here at Bluhm Brothers Landscaping, we've built our business on providing all clients with careful and considered attention. This Big Deal program was a new thing for us, and there are a few glitches we are working out if we were to run again. You are the second person that has come to my attention who wasn't happy. I know I probably can't make up for skipping work or schedule, but Bluhm Brothers Landscaping will reimburse you your $99. Thanks! Eden Bluhm

I did an Angie's List special for landscaping design. It was a hassle setting up the appointment, and the designer arrived late. He walked around the yard, took a couple of pictures and I gave him a copy of my house/yard platting. He was there for maybe ten minutes. When i received the design, it was simply various trees and scrubs and flowers layouts for my yard. I got the feeling this was simply a template used for all yards. I guess I have to remove the two trees I spent $1,000 on when I built the house in 2000, remove the play house (tool shed) I must have in my backyard, etc. He didn't listen to what I had to say about the deck or RV; I think he was simply upset because I told him he was late. I won't do an Angie special again.

I had a very messy overgrown area of my backyard. I first met with Lucy and she gave her recommendations for cleaning up the area and for which "no fuss" shrubs could be planted. She was very nice to deal with. On the day that the work was done, they were on time and had several men on their crew who pulled out old, dead shrubs and put chicken wire all around the edge of our gazebo to help keep the rabbits from continuing to nest underneath it. Then they planted new shrubs and put new landscape rock down around the whole area. They cleaned everything up--even brought their own porta potty for the crew to use. It looks like I have a whole new larger back yard! I'm very please with their work and will use them again in the future.

Had Ben come out and take a look at our yard and create some plans to finish our landscaping. We just got the plans and they look great, he incorporated all of our feedback. Next step is getting some pricing on putting this plan into action. Can't wait for spring to get here now so we can see what it will all look like.

Eden was right on time to do the estimate. He asked good questions and worked with me to modify the proposed work. He explained things well and provided the bid on the spot. They showed up with a large crew and walked through the yard to re-confirm all the details with me. They did the work correctly according to the plan, called me outside to re-check the plans at critical points, and finished up quickly. They took care to clean up the area before they left. They even brought their own porta-potty.

BLUHM BROTHERS LANDSCAPING INC were some of the best folks we have worked with. We had them out to give us a free estimate and they spent time discussing ideas and approaches. When we did call them back they were able to schedule the work within the next week and they arrived promptly and ready to work. Working two long days (they were onsite 12 to 13 hours each day) they completed the excavation, hauling, working with the irrigation company to layout the new watering system, drainage, stone walls and path, flower beds, and laying of new sod obtained from the sod farm. The work and care they did around the drainage proved these guys know what they are doing including talking with us to have us understand the best way to redistrbute the water around our house. These guys want to do the best job they can and they show it.

The final cost was right on the estimate. They cleaned up the work site and laid new sod right up to the patio. They were on-site for two days. This patio was not large compared to some of the mansion patios you might see. But I just feel so good when I walk out and sit or cook on this patio. I would hire them again (next spring) and would recommend them to others (already have).
Description of Work: Bluhm Brothers built us the sweetest patio you've ever seen. Eden was the salesman, estimator and designer. He does talk a lot when he comes out but I feel that is essential for him to get to know what the customer really wants. The professionalism of this group is excellent. They built steps and a patio outside my kitchen and dining room that has created an extra room. They diligently created and prepared the bed of this patio; believe me, I seriously doubt these pavers are ever going to move or heave. Plus, the design is perfect, with a circle pattern built into the overall design.

I got several estimates from several contractors and enjoyed meeting Lucy and Eden as they were very professional and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: Eden Bluhm came out to the house to give me an estimate for a paver driveway, sidewalk and front steps.. He was very friendly, personable and quite knowledgeable. He had very good design ideas to offer for my project. He submitted his estimate right there on the spot, which was very helpful. He also followed up with a phone call. I ended up using another contractor because overall pavers cost more than I wanted to spend. but I would highly recommend Bluhm Bros based on my contact with Eden. I also had contact with Lucy Gehan from Blumh Bros for an estimate for landscaping. She was very good as well and after my driveway is in I will most likely use Bluhm Bros to get the rest of my yard spruced up

Bluhm Brothers did a fantastic job from start to finish. I would definitely use them again, and in fact, plan to in the future. The positive experience started with the initial phone call to the receptionist, Debbie Francis. I had two priorities. The first was achieve a dry basement. The second was to simply to find an honest contractor, one that would do what they said they would do - which is very rare. When I told Debbie my priorities, she was very reassuring. That evening Lucy Gehan called and we met the next day to review the job. I was really impressed with the way she listened to what I wanted. All along the goal was to achieve a dry basement and she never lost sight of that. I liked the way she didn't try to divert me away from the main goal. The next day, Lucy took John Bluhm to the site and he suggested more solutions for achieving a dry basement. John Bluhm was amazing, very knowledgeable and accommodating. When he mentioned building up the window wells with treated wood, I balked and said I'd rather have something more permanent and classy and that I could do it myself. I suggested using stone. With that suggestion, he offered to drop off some wall stone, adhesive/sealant and even to loan me a stone cutting saw. When he arrived, he explained how to lay out the stone, cut it and apply the sealant. He even helped me move the air conditioner to gain better access to the east window well. Due to his helpful advice I was able to build up the window wells in about three hours so everything was ready when they arrived a few days later. They accommodated my schedule and even bumped up the date so things would be done before the next down pour. The crew, including John Bluhm, arrived when they said they would and did what they said they would - only more. John included a few "extras" without charge - like putting left over river rock in the window wells and filling in a depression with left over sod. The crew did a great job and they were all done by noon. Another thing I really appreciated was the follow up when John Bluhm came in for payment. He went over everything they did and explained why they did it. All the while, the whole goal was always to achieve a dry basement. When I mentioned that I was going out of town for a few days right away, he even offered to stop by and water the sod - for free. Throughout the job, John and the crew maintained a pride in workmanship that is nearly absent in most contractors. I and my neighbors have been burned by incompetent and dishonest contractors, so a healthy skepticism is always present. However, I'm happy to report that Bluhm Brothers will restore your confidence in contractors. Jim Moss
Description of Work: Removed old stump and prepared area for grading. Graded slope on south side of house to move water away from the house. Redirected down spouts to drain into garden and towards street, far away from house. Installed new drain tile and drain for redirected down spouts. Eden Bluhm came out a few weeks ago and walked the yard with me to determine what I wanted done. He made many valuable suggestions - not always resulting in more cost. Eden and John Bluhm and a large work crew came out on schedule the morning they said they would come. The two of them walked the yard with me again to be sure that everything that was to be done was understood and agreed to. John Bluhm stayed as the foreman. They all were very polite and friendly and worked very hard from about 8am to 8pm to finish it all up in one day.
Description of Work: I had all the beds around the yard cleaned and new fabric and hardwood mulch applied. Several areas including 3 window wells and 2 walk ways had stone applied. In all cases they cleaned out everthing that was there previously including and leaves and twigs/branches. They also replaced all edging that was bad. One area was resodded. A total of about 50 cubic yards of mulch were applied.

We have an old house in Mpls. that needs a lot of work, so we're accustomed to hiring contractors. Bluhm Brothers was among the best we've encountered. Some businesses struggle with the administrative side of things & never get back to me with an estimate, schedule etc. Bluhm Brothers is good on the administration and the actual project work. They wrote an estimate on the spot when they came out to look at the work. We scheduled the project, they arrived on time and spent about 11 hours working (on a humid day) until it was complete. Hard workers, good people.

This was the second time we used Bluhm brothers for landscaping work. We like their professionalism and the fact they send enough people to get the job done quickly and professionally. They prepared the site on the first day and marked off the area for the patio installation. Patio and walkway pavers were added on day two, and day three was spent on final dirt and mulch application and finishing the area. They arrive on time and are always courteous and professional.
Description of Work: Bluhm Brothers finished a walkway along the side of the house, and constructed a patio from pavers at the rear of the house. They brought in additional dirt and mulch to complete the work around the patio. In addition, they pulled many of the weeds, roots, undergrowth, at the rear of the house prior to adding soil. They also added an additional stone step to the lower deck. The rear patio was joined to the side walkway by installation of additional paver stone.

We are looking to do three things on our property: Create more green space, alleviate water drainage problems, and replace a crumbling driveway. I found a turf-based system where an underlying structure provides support for vehicles while also allowing turf grass to grow on the surface. Seems perfect for my application. The distributor said it's straightforward to install and that any competent landscaper should be able to do the job. Checked the list and contacted Bluhm Bros. Spoke to Eden, who said he would come out and give an estimate. Though they had no experience with this system, he sounded very open to working with me on the project. So I met him at my house at 6PM after work one night. He spent the next hour and half in my backyard with me. But here's the thing, over half that time he was making chit-chat about stuff that had absolutely nothing to do with my job--it was as though he was trying to kill time. He's a nice enough guy, but truth be told, talking on and on about irrelevant stuff with a stranger (me) isn't very professional. I put up with it because I want to get this job done and Angie's List gives this company mostly positive reports. Anyway, as he was walking away he said he'd get me a bid after doing some research. I'm still waiting--never heard another peep from him. It doesn't bother me if he decided this job wasn't a good fit for his company. But did he have to waste an entire evening of mine? And then not even bother to give me explanation?
Description of Work: Sought estimate to remove old concrete driveway, to be replaced with permiable "green" driveway.

They are an excellent company. They superseded our expectation. They were timely. The price was reasonable. We will use them in the future.
Description of Work: Bluhm Brothers Landscaping Inc did siding for us last summer. They put in some rocks that we needed in the flowerbeds alongside of the garage and shed.

In short, this was a wonderful experience, start to finish. We had received estimates from 5 companies total - some landscaper/paver block installers, some concrete contractors. Our original plan had been simply to replace the existing ground-level deck with a patio due to the deck's small size and poor appearance. We hadn't determined if we wanted to use the less expensive option of concrete, or if we should go with the stylish, but more expensive option of paver blocks. We were initially impressed with Eden Bluhm because he came prepared to discuss the project in detail based on the emailed information we had already provided. He also took this discussion beyond just the patio area. Yes, it is his job to sell things, but he hit on the problem areas my husband and I had already discussed and decided we could not afford to do. He was the only estimator that bothered to look outside of the patio area. We were very happy to learn that the cost of grading the yard to address the basement water issues and lumpy surface was not nearly as expensive as we had assumed. Without Eden taking the initiative to mention these things, we would have never known and would not have been so happy with the final result. He also took the time to draw a design on graph paper before he left for the evening, so we knew exactly what would be done for the price, if we decided to proceed. Much more comfortable with that than someone just measuring the spot and giving a price based on square footage. Eden's brother Jared took care of the grading and paver block installation. It is beautiful. The water is all running away from the house as it should be, and the paver blocks and landing to the house are perfect. Particularly the rounded corners, where he took the time to cut down the blocks so that the corner was smooth. Everyone points at the corner and remarks on how tiny and perfect some of the angled pavers are. So pretty. Jared was working with many guys and always kept everyone busy (I was lucky enough to be home that day). Part of the job was just a black dirt and sod patch to a corner of the front yard where we had to remove a tree last year. When Jared found that the contractor who supposedly ground out the stump left the entire stump just a few inches below the surface, he did his best to pull the stump out before installing the dirt and sod. When he couldn't get it pulled, he arranged with a stump grinder to swing by and get it out at a very reasonable price. Jared could have ignored this and covered the stump area with sod, which would have led to a soggy hole as the wood rotted more. So pleased that he took care of it properly! He also made the suggestion of burying the gutter downspots to further push water away from the house - also at a reasonable price(since this wasn't in the original estimate). Lastly, the sod was finished by the third Bluhm brother. When the sidewalk was installed, it had left a big drop beside a garden area framed by landscape rock and edging. Without us prompting, the rock was moved, the garden graded to meet the sidewalk, and the rock replaced. He then took a good amount of time to discuss how to take care of sod correctly and left us with a care pamphlet from the sod farm. We met for the original estimate on May 3, and the last piece of sod was installed on May 18th. I still can't believe they got everything done, including the coordination with the concrete installer and working around the frequent rain showers, in such a short timeframe. Things look great and it was wonderful to show it off to my family on the 21st.
Description of Work: Design and installation of concrete paver block patio to replace ground-level deck. Size increased from 10X16 to 12X24 feet. Removal of existing sidewalk from garage to side door of house. Re-grading of back and side yard. Installation of new sod in back and side yard. Coordinated with concrete installer to redo the sidewalk, including designing the new sidewalk. Install of underground drainage for existing gutter system.

The job required that they remove rock from a large rock garden that bordered the entire back yard fence & house. Limited access to the yard meant that all the work had to be done via wheel barrow ? no bobcat. John Bluhm came promptly at 7:30, and after a quick walk around the property he had his team go right to work. Soon it became apparent that they had severely under-estimated the amount of rock that needed to be removed. It appears that the builder graded the back yard with the rock, and it was up to 8? deep in areas. It was going to be much more than the 20 cubic yards that was originally estimated. Additional dirt needed to be hauled in to re-grade before the mulch could be installed. We discussed this with him and negotiated a fair amount of additional cost to cover the extra labor & materials. The team worked until 3:30, at which time a second team came and both teams worked until almost 9:00 pm that night. Despite the additional work, they got the job done in two days as promised. They were always professional, did a good job cleaning up after themselves, and the quality was excellent. They even brought their own satellite toilet, which pleased my wife. I would have been happier if the estimator had done a better job estimating the rock removal, but in fairness, it was not something she could have easily uncovered, and this situation was highly unusual. The additional work brought the bill $1,700 ($500 in additional material, $1200 in labor) higher than the estimate. I felt that if I had been a jerk and insisted that he honor his quote he would have, but I felt the additional cost was fair. John is honest and would not take advantage of me, and I felt I should not take advantage of him. One additional note: we misunderstood the agreement of the additional amount, and paid him an additional $500 in material & $1700 in labor ($2200 total). After he left he noticed this error, and returned the $500, even though he could have kept it and we would have been none for the wiser. John is a man with integrity, and we will use him again.
Description of Work: Removed landscaping rock from large garden in back yard and two small gardens in the front yard. Removed approximately 15 bushes. Replaced the edging, add dirt to re-grade, and put down hardwood mulch. Lay down sod in areas where garden was removed.

Overall: the project went very well and I am happy with the results. I have an urban backyard. When I looked from my kitchen window on the 2 days the guys worked on my yard, it looked like there was a movie crew of 20 people back there in addition to 2 Bobcats, machinery, stone, piles of dirt, mulch sand: there was an overwhelming amount of activity taking place in a small space. It was fun to watch. The 3 brothers are very professional, very approachable, very gracious. The job was completed a day before expected. I LOVE MY BACKYARD. During the estimate, I deferred to all of Eden's suggestions: what to put where, what stone to use, patio placement and size, placement of beds, mulch type, etc. (I am not a landscaping professional and the brothers definitely are landscaping professionals). Eden was very attentive to how backyard space is used, asked how I use or prefer to use the space. I feel like I've acquired a new room for my house. The sod that was laid down was probably average. Jarred has made an extra trip out and assured me that he will continue to monitor over the summer with me and replace what needs to be replaced. Already in the additional week that has passed since he stopped by the sod is much improved. I will use Bluhm Bros. for my front yard project next year.
Description of Work: Removed existing turf layer, unwanted growth and debris from backyard; removed existing sidewalk and patio; installed willow-creek pavers on a compacted base; graded entire area; installed plastic edge on new bed lines; installed 3" of hardwood mulch on bed areas; installed sod on lawn area; placed sod/compost on raised garden, installed a prepurchased fencing around one of the beds.

Estimator arrived for appointment on time. Estimator was pleasant and interested but lacked some knowledge regarding particular shrubs. Written estimate was received within an hour, but did not cover all the requested items and was not fully itemized. Estimated cost was about the same as the lowest bids from others. Overall grade based on the estimate - clarity, completeness, and price, versus other bids.
Description of Work: Asked for itemized bid on multiple residential landscape items, including: short stone wall, edging, mulch, shrubs, and trees. Detailed map of the project was given to each company asked to bid.
