Description of Work: I had three "major" van lines come to my home to provide a price quote for partial pack and full household load. We had the household goods in storage for a month as well during transition to our new home in Texas. Ace was the lowest bid overall, but the highest on a per unit / lb. basis. Their estimator was significantly below the competitors weights and this exaggerated their "lower" cost. The estimator seemed so low that I had him come out again and re-confirm his original estimate with me. It barely changed. So we booked with him based upon the 'low cost' scenario. | |During loading, the loading crew (they were very good) took much much longer than expected. Why? Because they were planning on a load of 11,000 lbs., not one closer to 17,000 pounds. So the packers were unhappy. The stuff *barely* fit onto the largest trailer they brought, so the loaders were unhappy. When the weight "estimate" was off by almost 50%, I was unhappy. | |That "oopsie" underestimate cost us significantly more money than if we had gone with one of the lower per lb. competitors. This underestimate cost me between $4,000 and $5,000 more than the original estimate, probably between $2,000-3,000 more than one of the competing (realistic) bids. | |The move itself was better. There was some difficulty in peak season getting the truck to deliver to Texas and unload when they said it would. We went back and forth on this several times, but it eventually got done. | |There was some damage to a few bookshelves and lamps during the move. One of our home door sills was badly scratched while large armoirs were moved into a room. This isn't my first rodeo, so I understand stuff happens during a move-especially if something is unloaded for storage, reloaded for transfer and then unloaded again. A few dings and the like is not unexpected. In general, the move aspect was satisfactory. | |I was offered (and I accepted) $500 off of the (inflated) bill to not write negative reviews on Angie's list and Yelp, as I threatened to do upon receiving the 'bad news' about the load cost that I was to bear. So I felt guilty about writing this review some months later. But I've changed my mind and wanted to clarify what my experiences were-both good and bad. If Ace wants their $500 back, they can contact me for further settlement. | |There were some good aspects of the move. By and large, the packers, loaders, and unloading crew were good and conscientious. However, the entire experience was overshadowed with a sense of being railroaded into an artificially low bid for services. That left a bad taste in my mouth. | |Advice to those considering movers: if an estimator's bid is well below the others, take it with a grain of salt. Work out the math on a per /lb. basis and seek multiple bids. One with a "guarantee" would be great, if that can be obtained. As is the case everywhere, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
