I checked out the company's web page at http://ludivigtreeservice.com/ and called the phone number posted there. (320) 267-6629. left the message that we had a tall dead spruce to remove and some more lighter work and asked if they'd care to bid on the job. David Ludivig called back on Aug. 12 and asked if it would be okay with us if he stopped by after supper. As we later strolled around the yard, looking at what needed to be done, David struck me as a low-key, competent guy, knowledgeable and polite. But when he said he could get the spruce removed for $400, I had to ask him if I had heard correctly. Yes, I had. He said they were a local outfit and did not want to be underbid in their home territory. They certainly were not. A large and reputable tree service company headquartered in the northern Minneapolis suburbs came in with a bid twice as high as David's. So with just a few misgivings about whether "you always get what you pay for," I called back and left word that David had the job. He had said that if we got back to him in a couple of days, he would probably be able to do the work by the end of the next week. But then a relative of ours passed away and we stopped thinking about trees. As we were coming home from the funeral on Friday, Aug. 22, it crossed my mind that I hadn't heard from David and probably ought to give him a call. I got the car parked and had walked half way to the house before doing a double take. And yep, the old dead 80' spruce was gone and so was the overgrown arbor vitae around front, and the silver maple had been trimmed back just the way we had discussed. David and his crew had cleaned up after themselves so thoroughly that you hardly noticed that heavy equipment had been there. The stray wood chips were few and far between. Excellent job! Since I wasn't home to watch the work being done, I can't comment on the manner of it. But the results of it were exactly as I had hoped they would be and at a price significantly less that I had been afraid we would have to pay. So I am glad to recommend the Ludivig Tree Service without any reservation whatsoever.
