Mike's was out more than FIVE different times over the course of an ENTIRE YEAR to diagnose and fix the problem with our radiators not getting hot. They NEVER fixed the problem. Each time they were out, we had a different tech person and it seemed as if nobody shared any information from person to person. Each time, we had to start from scratch and each person diagnosed -- and tried to fix -- a different issue. After each trip, we continued to have the same problem. And, because these trips were being charged under a home warranty, they ran completely ran through the amount the insurer allotted to fix the problem, so we had to pay out of pocket for someone else to actually fix the problem. When we finally got fed up with Mike's and got a different (competent) provider, we found that Mike's had completely missed a long-standing leak in the system and that during the year they were dinking around with this and that, the leak ended up corroding the boiler to the point where two different contractors said they wouldn't repair it, because they couldn't guarantee the fix since the corrosion was so bad. So, not only did Mike's not fix our problem, they created a situation in which we had to spend more than $10K on a new boiler. If they had initially found the leak (which the other contractor discovered in about five minutes), we could have repaired the old system and saved thousands of dollars. To top things off, we discovered the old boiler had been leaking low levels of carbon monoxide the whole time. Not enough to set off our alarm, but levels that, over an extended period of time, were hazardous to our health. So, not only would I not recommend Mike's, I would vehemently say DON'T USE THEM. We ended up going with Uptown Heating and while they were a little pricey, they were prompt, courteous, and expedited our repair -- because of course when the system finally went down because of the corrosion, it happened during one of the extreme cold snaps last winter when we had a week of -10 degree weather. This was one of the most frustrating and aggravating experiences I have ever been through, not to mention the most expensive, when it should have been a fairly obvious and not-too-expensive repair, had they diagnosed it properly from the start.
Description of Work: Mike's Custom Mechanicals was attempting to solve a problem with our boiler. Our front radiators weren't getting hot, although all other radiators were.

Hello [Member name removed], We are sorry to hear about your unsatisfactory review from our services from May of 2014. It is stated in our notes that the technicians found your boiler piping system to be incorrect from previous install and the primary reason as to "why" you were not getting hot water flow into the radiators in the front half of the house. There were numerous other issues with your boiler system as well relating to the original installation. In the case that "we" exhausted all of your Home Warranty funds is not true. The Home Warranty company covers system component repairs but due to the fact in your situation that the piping to the front half of the house was ran incorrectly, as well as the entire primary and secondary system the Home Warranty company would not pay for these items as they were defective from previous installation. In short, our numerous trips were a direct result from the financial limitations placed upon us by the Home Warranty company and yourself. The existing system components that were replaced BUT NOT UPGRADED were at your request, due to the fact that you did not want to pursue the proper course for repairs, yet rather chose to go with the conservative "what my home warranty company covers" approach. We are glad to hear that Uptown Heating and Cooling was able to meet your needs and that you were satisfied with the higher cost and results. One more thing, you claimed to have paid 1,500.00 for our services when in reality your only actual out of pocket expense was for a 75.00 Home Warranty deductible.

It has not been reliable for more than 8 months at a time. They came to try and fix the issue last fall by topping off the refrigerant and left and now the issue has resurfaced with the same symptoms.
Description of Work: They installed complete new furnace and AC unit with new intakes.

Thank you so much for the review [Member name removed]. You did however leave out some key information with your situation while writing this review. For starters you did in fact chose to have your HVAC equipment provided by your home warranty company and not with our company so your claim of paying us 5,300.00 for the system is false. Secondly there have been two trips by our company to your residence to try and determine where exactly the refrigerant loss is occurring in your system. The first trip was to diagnose the system not working. It was either that the system was not fully charged from install or there was the possibility of a leak. The technician wasn't able to pinpoint a leak but was able to add refrigerant your system and restored equipment to normal working levels, which kept equipment functional for a little less than a year. The second trip out, it was noted again that the system was low and pressure and a more detailed leak check was required. Going over the notes they state that first the indoor coil and line-set was tested and found to hold both pressure and vacuum tests. The next test was on the outdoor condensing unit. The condensing unit was both given a pressure and vacuum test which is where we could find a discrepancy. The condenser would not hold pressure it would drop about 1-2 psi for each 15 minutes of time lapsed and would not pull a vacuum deeper than 1200 microns. This information was observed with you present and it was recommended to change the outdoor unit as we could not pinpoint the micro leak any further. We have made several attempts to resolve these issues, as you have presented them to us. Both times labor and refrigerant were provided by our company to assist you with the resolution of the defective, home warranty provided equipment you received at NO ADDITIONAL COST to you. As an HVAC contractor we take great pride in our work, and stand behind our installations. IT IS NOT OUR JOB to fix defectively manufactured equipment, especially defective equipment WE DID NOT PROVIDE. I hope that everything works out for you in the future, but I promise you this that no one from my organization will assist you any further with your defective, home warranty provided equipment. -Mike

I originally contacted Mike's Custom Mechanical through a message on Angie's List and received no response. I then called them a few weeks later and explained the repairs I was looking for an estimate on and set an appt. for the next week. A few hours before the appt. the employee called and asked if we could move the appt. up a few hours because he had something else come up. I could not get out of work to accommodate him. He then asked what I was looking to have done and I explained what I had earlier spoken to the scheduler about. The first item he said they don't do. I explained the second repair and we discussed it and he gave me a quote and said he would email it over to me. I never received an email or follow-up.

The service was pretty good. They came out within a week or two after I purchased the Big Deal. It was pretty soon. There were no additional charges to the $29 Big Deal. Our furnace has been working fine. It is more than the same. It was okay. I had them out for service before and they usually had done good work. I did have some good expectations that they would do a good job.
Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal for Mike’s Custom Mechanical. They inspected the furnace and made sure it was operating correctly. They looked at a lot of other systems and had them kind of give me some feedback or information. What we were hearing was perhaps a problem with it. We were getting a rattle in the duct work somewhere, but they could not find anything in terms of what was causing the problem and I did not pursue it any further.

They did the job at a duplex that I own. They discovered that one of the boilers needed a new part. They ordered the part and were supposed to come back and I never heard anything back from them. I made several attempts to contact them. I still don’t know what happened with the communication at this point. The tenant said the process went smoothly.

The reason for the bad review is they were willing to put my son and I in danger. The recommended fix was to remove the safety feature that auto-shuts off the furnace if it gets too hot. When pushed to reevaluate the situation and test the furnace with the filter in, the individual responded by red-tagging the furnace and leaving it in pieces. When I had another furnace person come, the furnace literally emitted a fireball when turned on - thankfully the technician was not hurt. The previous person had unnecessarily removed a portion of the furnace and gases were building up around the furnace/in the basement. If I had turned the furnace on that night, the house would likely have burned. I recommend you stay far away from this company.

I have had some issues with the AC system since I had them came out. They scheduled the appointment. Ryan came out and he was very nice. It was pouring rain that day; in the process at the end he said it needed to be re-charged. I then had to pay an extra $75.00 for that. Then when it was warm outside, I was out in my yard and I could hear the AC turn on and then it would turn back off. The fan was blowing inside the house and there was no AC coming out. As the night went on, when it got warmer outside, it would then stay on the whole time. I had another neighbor come over and mention that was not working correctly. Then I realized the thermostat was having some issues too. Ryan then came back, since I was having some thermostat issues and HVAC and he tried to fix that. He did his best and finally said that he could put in another thermostat for me, but I told him that this one was working fine before. It didn’t work and I called the office, Amanda and Stacy, and I told them I needed someone else out to come out to check on the service. They sent out Mike, an employee, and he was very helpful. I told him about the on and off issue and even went with him out. The symptom was happening when he was there and he experienced it. He looked and he said the AC system had been over charged. He told me he would take it out and write a note to the office letting them know to call me and have the bill, $75.00 adjusted. We thought that was the problem, but low and behold he worked on the thermostat too and he said that that should make it better, but recently I have been having the on-and-off symptoms happening again. Mike gave me his phone number and I called him and told him the issue was still happening. He said I then had to call the office and make an appointment to have Mike come back. I mentioned that to the office and they said they will be sending me a check for that first initial appointment. Mike just came back today and put on a manual thermostat and helped troubleshoot. He was very helpful too. I have not received the check yet, and if I call them, they frequently do not answer and I have to leave a voicemail/message. Most of the time I do not get a reply.

When the second company came out, the tech informed us that our freon was really low. He tightened some things on the outside unit, put 4 pounds of freon in, and we have been comfortable ever since. However, he warned us that our a/c unit is on it's last leg and we should start saving for a new one.
Description of Work: Initially, Ryan did an annual spring tune-up for us. I was happy with that. The problem was that when we went to run the air a couple of weeks later, it didn't work. He came back twice more and both times said it was a damper issue. That didn't fix anything so we got a second opinion that was much different (see below).

We do remember this particular customer and we did contact him within a timely manner and gave him a quote for the type of humidifier he wanted according to the deal specifications and our pricing for what he was requesting. We are sorry that it did not meet what he was looking for in the pricing and we are hopeful he was able to get what he wanted and that it is doing what he needs it to do for the house needs.
