I bought the Angie's List deal thinking that it would cover the whole roof, as the deal suggested. But I'd forgotten that there had been an extension put on the house before I bought it, and then I added in the roof of the garage as well. The company representative worked with me to figure out the best possible price he could give me for everything. I was kept informed of what was happening, the dumpster showed up and the men where there to start the work that same morning. They cleaned the area after the first day and put tarps over anything that wasn't done. After the rainstorms the next day subsided, they came back and finished the job, cleaned the area again. I got a call from the company the next morning to tell me that the roof was done and make arrangements for the dumpster to be removed.

I am so disappointed in this company. Craftsman's Choice was very responsive when I requested a bid for our our roof project. They came out right away and explained the bid and the timeline, the sales guy told me the crew would work very hard and clean up everything before they left. Once we sent in our deposit though, all bets were off. No one ever followed up to tell us what to expect in the roofing process. I got a call from them on a Wednesday to let me know that our project had been pushed from that day to another day. Which would have been fine and good service had I been told about the initial scheduling date. We were mailed a brief flyer telling us to move chairs and patio tables inside because they could be broken with falling debris from the roof. So we did that. Everything that was even remotely close to the house was moved indoors. That's all we knew to do. No one called us to tell us what was needed of us on the day of the project so we were unaware that the crew would need a power source. Since there are no outlets on the outside of our house we would have needed to arrange something in advance. In the end, the crew foreman went to our neighbor's house to access her outlet. When we got home that night the crew was still working. In the process of the job, they had broken a small frog statue that was on the far corner of your yard. Not in the path of the workers. There was debris from the job everywhere in the yard. The foreman told us to use a path along the side of the house to take our dog to the bathroom. Luckily we checked it out beforehand and discovered that the path that had been pointed out was strewn with roofing nails. The grass was full of giant nails. We found out that there had been three layers of shingles for the crew to remove before they could do the new roof. Because we had only just moved in a few months before, we didn't know anything about the previous roofing jobs. So we were not able to give a heads up on this fact to Craftsman's Choice. It seemed that the crew was very upset about this setback though. They tore the gutter from the side of our house - leaving holes in the side where it was pulled from. They broke a halloween decoration that was no where near where the work was being done and left such a complete mess behind when they left that we had wait until morning to even go into our yard to see where it was actually clear to walk. We were even treated to hearing one of the workers say that he was not going to fix "the F... gutter". We had plans for the following day but after a multiple irate phone calls to Craftsman's Choice, we were told that a worker would be out right away to clean up our yard. He showed up at noon. One guy. It took him all afternoon to clean up the mess. We still find roofing nails and shingle bits in the garden beds and grass none months later. Full disclosure: Craftsman's Choice did take $200 off of our total cost. Now in June, we are having leaks in our porch roof. One guy came out to inspect this two weeks ago. He said he did see some "spacing issues" in the roof so another guy would be out the next day to take a look and fix it. It's been two weeks since that and we haven't heard anything. We have, however gotten lots more rain. Finally last night we called to see what had been done. It was Sunday so we left an explicit message requesting the detail of the fix work. Low and behold, I received a voicemail this morning from the guy who was supposed to be out two weeks ago to look at the "spacing issues", asking me to call and tell him what's going on with my roof so he can come out and take a look. Seriously? I'm sure there a people who have had good experiences with this company but ours has been terrible and they can't seem to get it right. Hopefully we are the exception.

The quote came in right in the middle of all of my other quotes. I went with them because of their great reviews, great customer service, and just had a good feeling about them. They did a great job. They also have been good about fixing any little flaws that I notice. I am very nitpicky and they fix whatever issue I have. Would use them again for other house projects!
Description of Work: New Hardieboard siding installed on my house
These guys were a delight to deal with from beginning (we found them at last year's state fair) to end (they just came by to repair some windows that didn't open properly because of expanding insulation). In order to protect our gardens, we signed up for their winter special at a 10% discount, but because of an unusually severe winter, work did not begin until March. They came out to the house, removed the exisiting masonite siding, covered the house in housewrap, rebuilt the soffits and repaired rotting wood and then installed new HardiPlank siding and trim. The workers were prompt, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable and skillful. When we had questions, we called or emailed the project supervisor and got an immediate response. The house now looks immeasurably better and we have only good memories of the whole project.

We had several different siding companies bid on our job. Mike was our sales person and he was always prompt, patient, and went out his way to explain different aspects of the project. Their price was quite competitive with the other companies and we decided to use Craftsman due to Mike's professionalism. Ryan was our project manager and he did an excellent job of communicating with us. His attention to detail was excellent and his crew was responsive to our needs. They were prompt and also did an excellent job of cleaning up the area each day. In addition, Ryan has gone out of his way to answer follow up questions about the project even after it has been completed. I was quite pleased with the service I received from Craftsman's Choice and would highly recommend them. Our house also looks great!

Overall, I was pleased with the work that was done and confident that the cost of the project was fair and reasonable. However, the timing for completing the project was not ideal. I gave them a July 1 deadline even though I definitely wanted this project done by August 1 for my father's 85th birthday party. Had July 1 been the drop dead, it would have been a problem since they had to come over 4th of July holiday to complete the project.

Matt came to my house on October 5 to discuss the project and give me some options. I could have had a ready-made door/window unit installed, but if I had done that, I probably would have had to have had the exterior of the house painted. Instead I had a door/window unit custom designed that could fit in exactly the same space as the old one. This work was done and installed within 30 days. The quality of the work was excellent. The price was excellent, too. Craftsman's Choice offers a $250 discount to senior citizens who are members of Angies List. My only complaint regarded the billing process. I paid one-half up front, and the other half when the work was completed. That was fine. My complaint is that the person who does the billing emailed the bill to me, and I didn't get it. I received a call from the office, asking me why I hadn't paid the bill, and I told the person because I hadn't received it. Other than that one little snag, Craftsman's Choice was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a similar service.

I chose Craftsman's Choice based on the reviews I saw here. I was disappointed to say the least. Removal of my existing siding started on September 25. I was told everything would be completed in two to three weeks. Although the majority of the work was complete by October 7 they couldn't manage to get around to painting my trim until November 19, at which point it was too cold to finish (and they were using the wrong color on parts of the windows anyway). I was waiting for them to finish so I could have some landscaping done and finally went ahead with part of that, but it was too late to actually put in any plants. It took multiple requests to get estimates, to get questions answered and to get the leftover siding material removed. And nearly THREE MONTHS after the project started I have partially finished trim and a building permit in my front window. Most recently I got a call saying that a pair of shutters I added to the project would be installed a week ago -- still haven't seen any shutters or gotten a call indicating where they are. I gave them an A for quality for their product, not their process.

Response from Craftsman's Choice Inc
Thank you for the "A" grade on the quality of work. As far as our "process" you are absolutely right, it needed improvement especially during our busiest of seasons, which is the fall. We are not about excuses here, your experience with our firm is not acceptable by any measure. Your experience is one of the reasons we have made significant changes to our system. As of January, 2014, all of the employees responsible for a given project are now linked via the "cloud" using tablets. Alerts, reminders and change orders are automatically sent to the right people, which should eliminate much of the human error involved. Also for our most tech savvy clients, our customers will now even have their own portal in which if they choose, they can log in at our web page and view their project schedule. (Don’t worry we will always encourage old fashioned communication too) I know we are excited to get and finish painting your home out as soon as we weather permits in the spring, thank you for your business, Sincerely, Craftsman's Choice
Summary of construction experience: Completely positive! Excellent communication by all! 100% trustworthy! High Quality! I would absolutely hire Craftsman?s Choice again. In more detail: I started looking for a contractor in March, 2013 to handle removing and replacing roof shingles, removing a chimney fireplace bump out wall, replacing some cedar siding, and removing and replacing windows. After meeting with at least 6 contractors who I found via other internet review sites I was having no luck finding a business who I felt confident in hiring. Some did not respond with quotes (SELA was one of them), some could not handle all parts of the project, one was just a terrible high-pressure sales man, and another offered a super great deal on "low end" materials along with plans to repair rotten cedar siding by just painting over the rot. This is when I decided to join Angie?s list. After reading hundreds of reviews I called Craftsman?s Choice, spoke with Amber, and was quickly scheduled to meet with Mike to discuss the projects. Mike is a no-pressure sales guy with great remodeling ideas an loads of experience-based knowledge about building materials. He responded quickly with a quote, then Matt was promptly out to measure, and soon after we were making progress on the projects. The roof was done with GAF Woodland Designer Series shingles in the color Castlewood Gray by a roofing crew of fellows who were smiling while they were sweating through the 95+ degree weather. YOU should check out the look of these shingles ? they are unique and stunning on a steep pitched roof! Ryan, Joel and Beau tackled the chimney-fireplace tear down, removing and replacing windows, framing in two new very large Marvin windows, and installing new rough cedar siding where it was needed to match the rest of the house exterior. Aside from Joel?s very mediocre singing-to-the-radio skills, these are three great guys who do great work! Ryan was the project manager on this part of the job ? he was on site often, handling material needs and dealing well with project changes and conversations when house issues were discovered. After this job finished, project manager Chris Overson took over along with Chris and Dave to handle the patio door install project and the interior oak trim. Again ? three more great guys who do impressive work! Through the months of projects we did run into some unforeseeable situations; which, if you have had any experience with home projects or if you watch any home improvement TV shows, you know that construction projects can be unpredictable and sometimes things happen that turn one project into another project. Working with contractors through these types of difficult situations is how you really learn about the people you are dealing with? and this is how I learned what makes the Craftsman?s Choice really great! Ben, owner, instantly involved himself in situations that required extra attention. He was consistently motivated to do what was right, to make things right, and to make sure that we were pleased with the progress and the results. I can?t say enough sincere words about Ben ? he was truly a pleasure to work with. Also, project manager Chris O. was always on top of everything ? he was attentive to all of the projects going on, always offering to help his team, to deliver building materials, or to haul away my own debris from unrelated interior sheetrock projects when he was in the area. These people go out of their way to take care of their customers ? and you always know that they care, because they do.

A wood roof, similar to an awning, was built to bridge the house with the detached garage. It was sloped and also had to withstand Minnesota snow. This new roof turned out beautifully; better than expected. Definitely enhances the appearance of the house, and also meets the functional requirements. Kudos to the project designer, and thanks to Ben (co-owner) for his expertise and execution of the project. We also were very pleased with the entire team of hard workers who built the roof.

The initial contact was good and they came out right away. I was told that the drawings would be ready in 2 weeks. After about 2 weeks I called and was told that they were working on the drawings. After a month I still did not have drawings and was told that they had not anticipated the volume of response. I finally received the drawings after 6 weeks. The drawings were not what we talked about. Some of the ideas were included however, it was very basic. Not worth the price.

This was another one of the "Angie's list big deal promotions" gone wrong. How it worked is Angie's list kept the $49 fee and we would draw plans hoping to get a chance at doing the work. But what happened is we received about 60 "Big deal" requests in the first two days. Before we knew it, we were overwhelmed with plan requests for projects ,many of which were out side our field of expertise. It worked great for Angie's list as they pocketed all the money. Frustration for all involved. We apologize.

I was not impressed with them to be honest. They just came in and give me ideas on how to improve the exterior of my house and basically it was just like what would you want done to the exterior of your house and I paid for a quote from a contractor and they forgot about me and then I had to call them back to get whatever the quotes where so I would not rate them highly. I don't think they were doing anything wrong, but I just didn't think they do what I intended to get. I would not use them again.

I saw Craftsmans choice at the home show in minneapolis and seemed like they were a nice company to do business with. We scheduled a walk-thru to decide what could be done and the price. They only deal with 6" gutters which is great I feel. Bigger the better, and after the heavy rain we had last year I know I couldn't go wrong. The job went well and they did a very nice job. I dealt with Ben who is the owner and he was great. He came once after the project was finished to make sure that I was happy and that everything looked good. Overall they were a good company who does quality work and I would recommend them to whomever needs gutters.

I was very impressed by this operation and how they worked. I called them after finding them on Angie's list and someone came out and looked at our job within two days. This was in the last part of the winter and he still climbed up and inspected the roof. I got a fair price quote with three different options for materials and warrantees. When we scheduled the replacement they were there on time with a crew of six. they did a tear off of three layers of shingles (from the previous owners) and all debris. They re-decked the roof after finding the underlayer was made up of old planks with many gaps. (this was done only after showing me the issue and asking me how I wanted to proceed) Craftsman's choice also did a few odd jobs as they came up almost on demand. I would hire them again. We had two or three other people come and look at our roof and just didn't even want the job as the tear off was more than most jobs and our roof is steep. They didn't want to deal with it. Craftsman's choice never shied away from my job. Good work, nice workers, and done professionally, fast, and to my satisfaction. They even gave me a call back to be sure I was satisfied before they sent the final bill.

Everything went really well. We had built our house over 35 years ago. We had been carefully maintaining our original siding, but it was time for a change. We shopped hard for our siding and an installer. Craftsman?s Choice was one of three bidders on the project. We?re really happy that we chose them. Their pricing was fair, they completed the project on time and they were very good to work with. They were also very good in helping us design how our siding would ultimately look. They have some very good designers and they have software that allowed them to modify pictures of our house to determine how it would ultimately look with the new siding.
