I had a terrible experience with Superior Mechanical. First, the technician showed up an hour earlier than scheduled without any prior notice or a courtesy call to ask if moving the appointment up was acceptable. This was extremely inconvenient as I wasn't prepared for the early arrival. Then, they spent only 15 minutes working on the A/C unit and filled it with refrigerant without asking if I wanted them to do so—charging me a whopping $679. Initially, I thought the technician had said the cost would be $67 because I didn’t believe anyone would perform $679 worth of work in just 15 minutes without consulting the homeowner first. This was a shocking and frustrating realization. Adding to my dissatisfaction, the technician didn’t actually diagnose the problem with the unit—he just vaguely mentioned that it "has a leak somewhere" without providing any specific details or a solution. He only entered the house to take pictures of the unit after I specifically asked for a replacement unit cost as the current unit is 30+ years old. When I followed up with Superior Mechanical, they explained that the technician told them I had expressed I wanted to “limp the unit along for the rest of the year.” This assumption was based on a 10-second interaction at my front door when he arrived—hardly a conversation to make such a decision. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, they offered to apply the $679 toward a new unit. Based on my experience so far, I made it clear that I would not be going through them for a new unit. Their second option was to split the cost of the refrigerant, still leaving me out more than $400. When I asked why I was being expected to pay for work I didn’t consent to, they suggested coming back to remove the refrigerant and refunding approximately $550, still charging me for the visit—even though the technician never actually diagnosed the issue and just tried to slap an expensive bandaid on the problem. This lack of communication, failure to properly diagnose the issue, and disregard for my consent was incredibly unprofessional and left me feeling taken advantage of. I strongly advise against using Superior Mechanical.

I had Superior put a new furnace, filter rack, thermostat and humidifier in my house the y were prompt and clean and told my wife how everything works. Excellent service would highly recommend them to everyone. Just tonight my plumbing backed call Superior after hours and Joe was here in less than 30 minutes. He was very professional and polite and was in & out in 30 minutes. Highly recommend Superior Mechanical!

The plumber they sent was amazing! He was able to replace the faucet, after trying a simpler solution that did not work. The best part was that he did not need to cut a hole in my finished basement wall! He was able to squeeze into an access space and do the repairs from there. I applaud his ingenuity!

I had originally thought I would purchase one from another company in town but decided to check with Superior Mechanical at the last minute. After a visit there I decided to purchase from them. The person I dealt with there (Larry) was very straightforward, honest, and professional plus there was no attempt to sell me more than I needed. The installer (Jason) was the same - professional, right on time, knowledgable, pleasant and efficient. The softener definitely was excellent for our somewhat difficult situation plus the price was competitive.
Description of Work: We needed a new water softener to fit in a small difficult to access area.

We called on Wednesday to get an estimate and had it installed on Friday of the same week. The installer was there when expected, was very professional and friendly. Gladly answered all my questions once the install was completed. They took the old softener and cleaned up after themselves. Very pleased with their work.

I was charged at $96.00 per hour for 3 hours of work. The plumber worked for 1 hour, and chatted with the window installers for another hour. We were charged for 3 hours of work. Needless to say, we were peeved when we received the bill.

I wasn't very happy with them. They overcharged us. All they did was put a plunger in the toilet and charged me $95 for a service call for 3 minutes. I would tell people not to go to them. They did a good job, were punctual, professional, and responsive, but, I give them low ratings and will not use them in the future.

From the start we found small problems that are mostly workmanship issues. The master bathroom jacuzzi tub didn't work. The plumber didn't hook up the jets and they fixed that without a problem. Since then we found sinks hooked up improperly and the water heaters valve issues. I only called once to ask for help as my father is a plumber that lives in another state and would help do the fixes when in town on visits. The one time I called they claimed they did the work properly and the manager was quite rude. The funny thing is that the installation instructions were still hanging on the kitchen faucet so it was clear that the job was done incorrect. So nothing major, just poor overall workmanship.

The initial bid was not very informative. Their competitors gave a much better bid with bid packet and were all better at informing me about the facets of installing geothermal. I took the information from the other bids and picked Superior Mechanical because they were five thousand dollars cheaper. I should have gone back when I was suspicious of the fact that Superior wanted to install an eighty gallon water heater in a house with one person in it. I had that taken off the bid but didn't go back to research any of the other charges. There was never an itemized invoice of work order. I assume it would come at the end of the job but the invoices kept getting more and more vague. This includes a box of filters that were left that the competition said was 250.00. Two months after installation, The heat went out because they wired the thermostat wrong. That month my electric bill was the same as the year before but now I had the payment of the new system as well. The advertisement of the unit as being quiet was a fantasy as well. I can hear every change in the system while it's working. The next month the electric bill was higher so I called out the electric company to make sure they didn't have something wrong, but they said everything was ok on their side. I called the manufacturer who informed me that the unit shouldn't be using that much electricity and that the unit installed was too large for the square footage that I had. Superior kept saying it was not their fault. It was only when they sent out an electrician that they told me unless I had a well insulated house with good windows that the unit would only work as well as an electric furnace. Another point the salesman forgot to point out with all of the energy saving virtues of this unit. The final word from Superior, "Well , at least you don't have to buy propane". Yes, but I have a 200.00 monthly payment for the next twenty years. Lastly, when it comes to the rebate forms, It's six months later and I'm still trying to get the paperwork right and send it in since they DON"T do it as they said in the sale pitch. So here I am with a monster furnace in my basement that can't be returned that sucks in electricity like it was free and sounds like someone left a semi truck running. The extra humidity- oh, not in a house that's not airtight. Did I forgot to mention that. Beware and do a lot of homework. I would have gone solar first if I knew then what I know now. So much for energy savings.

Response from Superior Mechanical
I appreciate your business and would encourage an opportunity to meet with you to discuss your complaints. Jeff, his manager Brian, and I offer his side of your issues: Geo-Thermal Heating: Jeff reports that you have worked hard maintaining an organic theme for your property. He represents that from the start, it was obvious that you had already reached a conclusion to utilize Geo-Thermal. Sizing: Jeff choose a 5-ton system which would be oversized if one considers only the cooling load. Because we reside in Minnesota we make it policy to size all systems to meet the heating load. 5-Ton equals 60,000 BTU’S; this will be required to heat your home in its current condition using any system. Jeff choose a 2-stage system, the operation affords the system to run on first stage (2 ½-tons, 30,000 BTU’S) unless additional load is required by the weather. 80-Gallon Water Heater: We always suggest an 80-gallon water heater to maximize the efforts of your Geo-Thermal system. Anything smaller would expel energy that has already been produced. Extra Charges: Your letter has obvious conflicting remarks in this regard. First you state we charged exactly what we quoted, then you represent we bid you a lower price only to “pile on extras to make money”. Propane: Geo-Thermal is the most efficient method of cooling or heating with electricity. Every electricity company charges different rates at different times. Jeff’s comments regarding comparing your current utility costs were meant to remind you what you had spent on propane. Invoice: The work was detailed on our quotation, we made no changes. We see no value in providing another list that was previously detailed. Our Price: I am confused here as well. Our price was 15-20% lower than our competitors. Using a more expensive contractor would increase your payback time by 20%. Thermostat: The thermostat was not wired incorrectly. It was either programmed incorrectly or someone changed the programming. Our quick response appears to be nothing more than good customer service. Monster in Basement: Any water to air heat pump houses not only the heat exchanger and blower like a standard furnace, but also a compressor and evaporator normally seen outside of a home are integral to the inside unit. Jeff represents he reviewed the size of this unit in advance. Rebate: Your electric provider has rejected our paperwork two times; we have submitted your information for the third time. Solar: We have been in business for 26 years. We are not aware of any solar heating/cooling system that works well in this climate. We could not recommend a solar heating/cooling system. Our mission statement represents our goal to be the most honest plumbing and heating company in our area. Please consider affording me the privilege of a discussion at your convenience. Sincerely, Jim Gander General Manager Superior Mechanical (507) 289-0229
