MICKELSON'S BLACK DIRT

Scott did a great job of removing the old front step and sidewalk and hauling it away and roughing in the new and expanded area of the sidewalk project. For the dirt work, he did an amazing job of spreading it on to various low and uneven spots in our yard and leveling it with his skid steer loader. The quality of the dirt was excellent and great for planting new grass. For the retaining wall project, the amount cut out and leveled turned out as we had hoped it would.

On a Monday I called Mickelson Black Dirt to get an estimate on 6.5 cubic yards of black dirt delivered to my house. Scott Mickelson answered and gave me his quote. I told him I was going to be using the dirt to seed a new area of my lawn and I asked if it was good dirt to do that. He stated yes. I asked if it was pulverized and screened, he stated yes. I we agreed to a price and he stated he could deliver the dirt on Tuesday during the day which worked perfect because my wife was going to be at home that day. My wife waited all day and around 5pm I called Scott to find out if I we had a miscommunication about the delivery date. He just plain old didn't make it. He asked me if I could call him at 7:30am Wednesday morning to remind him to pick up dirt for me and then drop it off that morning. I had to take the morning off from work to accept this. I called him and he said he could be out by 9pm with the dirt. He did arrive Wednesday morning however it was about 40-50min late. Not a big deal really but frustrating that he didn't come the first day he agreed to. Next, came to using the dirt he delivered. It most likely was pulverized but it definitely was not screened. I found stones anywhere from 1 to 2.5 inches as well as trash (plastic, landscape cloth, roots, twigs, glass, a small toy dinosaur and other miscellaneous junk) while I was spreading it on my lawn. I had to rake so much trash and chunks of stuff out of it to get it smooth enough for seeding new grass. I saved money going with Mickelson's Black Dirt but the money I saved was definitely lost in effort of getting it to the grade of dirt that I thought I was getting. Mickelson's Black Dirt is "dirt cheap" and would be great for fill however, it definitely was not the top grade I was originally told I was going to be getting. Scott Mickelson of Mickelson's Black Dirt / Mickelson's Construction missed the mark by committing to times that he never met and plainly told me things that were not true about his dirt. I would not recommend working with Mickelson's Black Dirt for dirt delivery, unless you are okay with poor dirt, someone that doesn't deliver when he states he will and needs a "reminder" to provide you a service that he is charging you for.
