They were covered with very old fiberboard flooring (which we ripped up ourselves - but was still a mess), and had paint splatter, etc. Pretty rough looking, but we had Robert come over and give us an estimate. We figured between sander rental, paper, and varnish we'd have ~$400-$600 into the project if we did it ourselves. Add to this the time, mistakes, and headache that would go into it, and Robert's price of $850 sounded good. He showed up on time for the estimate (a good sign), and was knowledgeable about flooring - answered all the questions we had. He gave us a signed estimate (another good sign). This is the first 'contractor' we've ever hired, as we're mostly DIY type people, so we were a little apprehensive. But Robert was easy to get a hold of, and when it came time for the project, he showed up early, got to work, and 3 days later he was done (one day for sanding and a coat of finish, then 2 more coats of finish). The floors are absolutely gorgeous. Way better than we even hoped for. There's a few imperfections, but the floor was a disaster to start with - to have it turn out as it did is amazing. Months later, it seems to be holding up well. We've gotten many compliments on it too.
Description of Work: Robert sanded and finished our downstairs maple floors. He sanded them down, and then applied 3 coats of finish.

The job was absolutely fantastic! We were first time homeowners with not much cash left over from the purchase and ancient floors that exuded hideous fumes of cat pee -- the previous insane owner had 10-15 cats at once! The seller's realtor passed along Robert's quote that the previous owner never got around to having done. We called right away because the quote was much much lower than we'd ever heard of. Robert showed up with two other guys very promptly -- early, actually -- and did an extremely thorough quote, right down to every single square foot and board that needed to be replaced. They impressed us right off the bat with great attitudes. One of them even wore a shirt that said "Everyone loves wood." These guys were really into floors! We had another guy come over to give us a quote -- a friend of ours had used this guy -- who just guessed at a quote that ended up being twice as much and -- with apologies to our friend -- not nearly such good quality. When Robert and Crew showed up for the job -- again, early -- the first thing Robert said was, "I know we didn't discuss this in the quote, but..." I thought for sure he was going to surprise us with extra costs. Instead, he surprised us by saying that the quote included refinishing the damaged top of our built-in buffet, but he would happily just refund us the difference if we didn't want it done. Nice surprise! And the work was fantastic. Our floors were a stinking mess, but are now beautiful and odor-free. And did I mention that they also got rid of -- this part's creepy -- the huge blood stain in one bedroom (we're hoping it's just cat blood). AND they added a new layer of varnish to another room so that it would just better match the rest, for free. AND they voluntarily did the whole job over the 4th of July weekend so that we could move in sooner. And again, these guys just love refinishing floors. They called us after they finished each step of the process, just to ask if we wanted to see their progress, and beamed at how impressed we were every time. Robert said many times that he'd love to come refinish our oak stairway as well because he just loves sanding each stair by hand... and because I think he wouldn't have closure on the project until the whole thing is completely finished. And for how incredible the rest of the floors look, we are definitely going to give him that priviledge!
Description of Work: Robert & Crew completely refinished and patched our 100 year old (never before refinished) hardwood floors. They started by ripping out a kitchen's worth of vinyl tiles that had practically fused to the floor over 40+ years. They then removed cat-pee damaged floor boards and replaced them with new wood. Since the cat pee had penetrated the floor boards, they completely sealed the underlayment to eliminate the odor. They then completely sanded the floors through the entire house and refinished with three coats of varnish. To top it off, they put in some new molding in areas that were damaged by the cats, and stained it to match the original wood.
