They arrived on time, it was the same person the last time we used them. Very personable, friendly, and very informative. Excellent work completed.
Description of Work: They replaced an old egress window. The window leaked and flooded our basement. They also took precautions with drain tile to make sure it would not happen again.

I called to get an appointment for an estimate on May 27. They came by on May 29 and gave me my estimate. They are very very professional and responsive. I called back on May 30 to set up my appointment. Kirsten is very polite, professional, detailed and will respond to your questions as quickly as possible. She put me in touch with Dan their scheduler and we scheduled my drain tap for that Wednesday or Thursday. I must say that on Thursday evening when I returned from work I thought they had not come by to do their job. I called on Friday and told Kirsten that no one had showed up on Thursday. She immediately checked for me and within 10 mins called me back to let me know they had come on Thursday and installed the drain. They had done such a neat job and had cleaned up behind themselves that I actually thought no one had came. I apologized to her and their crew for ever doubting their work. You can not go wrong hiring Egress Guy, they are fair in their pricing and their workmanship is outstanding. I wish I had more work for these guys and ladies to do because from the first phone call to the last it was a very pleasing and easy process to work with their whole crew. Boy, do they do a neat job you won't know they were even there.

We had this work done in the middle of the winter in order to use the company's 10% winter discount. The snow was very deep around the house but the installer, Zak, brought in an excavator, a snow blower and hand shoveled to get access to each window. The back chain link fence had to be dismantled to get the excavator into the back yard, but it was re-installed well. Zak did a great job with the entire project, was very professional, and answered all of my questions. The work lasted 2 entire days. The company got the permit and met with the City inspector for a framing inspection. The only two things I wish they had done differently was to isolate the egress window room better when the cement block was cut, and use cleaner tarps on the stairs so they would not track dirt in. Dust had gone everywhere even though they tried to isolate the window from the room with poly and suck the air out the window opening with a fan. I had covered everything in the room but dust was even on the main level. It was a lot of clean up. Their tarps should have been shaken out before being unrolled in the house.

The finished project is beautiful. More importantantly, the communication was outstanding! These guys could teach other contractors a thing or two about the importance of detailed communication. I was very impreseed with the attention detail and the team's dedication to ensuring that my project was done right. I would absolutely recommend these guys and wish they did more than egress windows! :)

Once we committed to use the Egress Window Guy, we paid 50% down and had an install date scheduled about 4-6 weeks out. Prior to the install date they called to confirm the date and time. They coordinated the building permit and made sure the utility lines were marked about a week prior to the install. They called the day before the install and asked if they could get to work on the outside work even though this would be a day early. Since no one needed to be home and since it wouldn't leave an open hole in the house overnight, we had no objections. They completed the outside work late on Monday and came back early on Tuesday. They were clean, courteous, and focused on their work. In a couple of hours they had completed as much of the install as they could and said they would return later in the day after the building inspector had a chance to sign off on their work. The inspector signed off on the work and they came back late in the day to finish framing the window. We opted to have the company handle the building permit and finish off the interior trim work for a reasonable fee. The end result and fit and finish look great. Everyone we dealt with was professional, knowledgeable and organized. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Egress Window Guy came out and provided an estimate. They came highly recommended and have done multiple egress windows in the neighborhood, and based on these facts we decided to move ahead with their services. They priced out several options and walked us through each step of the process.

The guy who did the consult and quote for us was easy to talk to, gave us the clear process, and gave a solid quote and timeline on site. Installation was 2-parts - exterior prep work and the interior installation. Miscommunication within the company had the exterior contractor arriving half a day later than expected. However, he was extremely polite and professional. What is more, I have a 7-year old who wanted to watch and when he went outside, the contractor allowed him to help dig and haul dirt in the wheelbarrow back to the pre-arranged site. Afterwards, he would give my son a ride back in the wheelbarrow. It was easily one of the neatest and kindest thing I had seen. Day 2 - also late - and seriously this would be a major strike against them if they weren't so good about everything else. Installation was focused, disruption minimal, clean-up was pretty thorough, and the finished result looks great.

Egress Window Guy came out in March 2013 to install. We were told that they would come back and wrap the outside of the window later due to weather conditions. In April we received the final bill. I wrote back that the job was not done. Two things needed to happen. First the window needed to be wrapped and two the inside hardware was beige and not white. I reminded them this was one of the last two windows to be replaced in our house and the window should match all the other windows (common sense). That's what I signed up for that is what I should get. I sent them in $1,000 and noted why I short paid $500 until the window was wrapped and hardware changed to white. In May they came back and changed the hardware the white. Egress Window Guy refused to wrap the window and told me they wouldn't do it. I was having Lowe's put in the last window so I asked them to wrap the Egress Window Guy's window. June Lowe's came out and installed the last window and wrapped the Egress Window Guy's window on the outside. June 26th I got a phone call from the company regarding the remaining balance. I called back 6 minutes later (I have the transcripts) that I was out of town and waiting for the numbers from Lowe's to tell me how much it cost to wrap their window. July 1st I heard back from Lowe's $200. July 10th I wrote the final check minus the $200 but never sent it because I received a lien on the house. I've been working through the Better Business Bureau to try to get resolved. They've mis-labeled my case as a billing dispute not a service dispute. Yesterday I heard back from the State of Minnesota (I forwarded the e-mail in my original e-mail) that Egress Window Guy is not licensed in Minnesota and hasn't been since the end of March 31, 2013. I don't know how that will impact the whole process. I still have a unwarranted lien on my house from a unlicensed contractor...who was licensed when I hired him. This whole process has stressed my family out. We are being held hostage by a unscrupulous contractor.

Response from Egress Window Guy Inc
An important goal at Egress Window Guy is to serve our customers with honesty and integrity. One method we use to assist us in meeting this goal is providing a proposal to every customer we work with. The proposal outlines the work to be done by our crew at the time of installation. This proposal is signed by the customer at the beginning of their project, marking acceptance of the work specified. In this customer’s signed proposal, there is no specification or condition to (1) wrap the window or (2) provide a specific hardware color. When made aware of the customer’s dissatisfaction, we provided and installed new hardware at no charge to the customer. We also explained that not only do we not wrap windows, we do not recommend this process “as it has a tendency to hold moisture, causing the wooden frame to rot over time”. As for our licensing, Egress Window Guy maintains a current license at all times. This license number can be found directly on our website, our Angie’s List page, our proposals, and email signatures (to name a few). Visit the MN Department of Labor and Industry (https://secure.doli.state.mn.us/lookup/licensing.aspx) for further detail.

Sid came out to look at the options I was considering and gave us two quotes based on those options. We had a bit of back and forth over some details and they rewrote the quotes. Everyone we communicated with was responsive and polite. A crew of two arrived a bit late on the scheduled day but it wasn't a big deal. We went over the details and they asked a few questions to make sure everyone was on the same page before they started. Left for the day and they were done by the time we got home. Everything looks good and pretty much as expected. We did not have them do any interior finishing work. I would recommend them.

We reached out to a number of egress installation companies, but Egress Window Guy was the first and only to respond. We had a few numbers in mind of what we expected the cost to be, but we scheduled a consult so Don could take a look at the project and get us a full estimate. He was timely, professional and helpful. We had a bit of an unusual situation with where our egress needed to be, due to ducting that ran directly across the window. Don helped us to see what a couple of options would be, and suggested we talk to the City to make sure we'd be making the right decision. I believe it took four or five days for us to receive a full estimate (via email) from Don and Egress Window Guy. After a month of debating whether or not we'd go with the window (vs. leaving the space as-is), we decided the price was right, and we liked the ratings we saw on Angie's List. We gave them the okay, and a date was scheduled four weeks out--which is what Don told us would likely happen. In those four weeks, a number of changes happened--we decided we wanted to save some cash by doing the dig-out ourselves, and the City gave us new information which lead to us needing a larger window than anticipated. Egress Window Guy was great and responsive with our many, many queries leading up to the the installation date. On the date of the installation, the crew of two men arrived 15 minutes late, but were professional and after going over all the details with us, got right to work. This was at 8:15 a.m. When we arrived home at 4 p.m., the City inspector had already been out to okay the job and the crew was packing their gear back into their van. We opted not to have any finishing touches done, but the guys left the space as clean as they could (they even ran drop cloth down our steps so they wouldn't track in unnecessary messes). We had to dust our basement, as the concrete saw did kick up lots of dust, but we were prepared to do this, so it wasn't an issue. Overall, we're most impressed with how timely everything was attended to, and how Egress Window Guy was able to respond to our multiple questions and scenarios. We're very happy with the work they did, feel confident in the quality of the work, and feel they charged an honest price, considering the labor and quality materials. We won't be needing any more windows ourselves, but we'd be quick to suggest Egress Window Guy to anyone looking for egress work.

Service not received but the provider still deserves a recommendation
Description of Work: I contacted the service provider with a question regarding a basic egress window cover. The response was quick and what impressed me the most was that for my particular needs he recommended an option that I could purchase and install myself. While I did not use this service provider in this instance I would in the future - I greatly respect his honesty and help. He took the time to respond when he could easily have ignored my request since it didn't generate business for his firm.

We had to reschedule a couple times due to changes in our schedule. They were very accommodating and understanding. Shortly before the project began we got some very heavy rain and I got worried that the window wells might fill up with water, so I called them. Don (the owner) assured me that the wells would be dug with the ability to hold gallons of water. We made a minor tweak to the plan and went with slightly smaller wells than originally planned. They wanted to get both windows done in one day. It ended up they asked to come the afternoon before the actual day (which was fine with us) to get things set up and to dig the first hole. The crew was both professional and friendly. They introduced themselves, told me the plan, answered my questions and concerns, and got to work. The installation of both windows was completed by the end of the day on the day scheduled. They took time to answer a couple questions I had during the day as the project progressed. They finished about 8:30 pm. The next morning I looked at my new windows and realized they had left way too much dirt (sandy, rocky soil) and that I would never be able to get a layer of top soil plus mulch for re-planting the flower bed. I called and told them the problem. They sent someone over later in that day and he removed a bunch of the dirt. He was concerned that I was satisfied with the job done. I am very happy with the new windows. One note: they put rough cedar exterior trim around the windows. The crew said that the trim could be left untreated and allowed to turn grey except that they sealer they put on nail heads and around the edges would NOT fade, so the greying would have blotches then. So it pretty much HAD to be finished. No prob. But when I went to give it a light sanding before putting on the primer, it was SO rough that it was dangerous to sand - as in lifting up splinters all over the place even when I tried to go lightly and with the grain. Eventually, I got it sanded, primed and painted. It helped to sand again before the final layer of paint. It seems like if it NEEDS to be finished, they should install something other than rough cut. The exterior trim is finished now, looks good, and I never mentioned the problem to them.

This was a friendly and professional job from start to finish. I called to ask questions (e.g., can they deal with a poured concrete foundation and concrete sidewalk removal, what are the pros and cons to stone vs timber window well), got my questions answered immediately and an estimate visit scheduled within a few days. I took about 2 weeks to decide to do the job as it was more expensive than I thought it would be, but decided the price was reasonable considering my large window, the poured concrete foundation, sidewalk issue, etc. (I called two other egress window installers, but one did not do poured concrete foundations and the other did not do in-person estimates, which I wanted because I knew my job had some complications -- besides the above, my finished basement had a drop ceiling and joists running perpendicular to the window, so a new header would be needed -- I was not confident that someone who didn't see the job would do it right for a fixed price.) I received a contract within a couple days of my telling them I wanted to accept the job. The contractor was very responsive by email to scheduling questions and other questions about the job. The job was scheduled for a month after I submitted my signed contract, which was right about what he had told me it would be, and I had about two weeks notice to move items in the basement to make room for the work, which was fine. The work was scheduled for a half day of hole digging, a day and a half of window construction, with an inspection scheduled for the 3rd day. The crew showed up right on time each day and worked 10+ hr days, were very polite and professional, answered all my nosy questions about the work, didn't mind my taking photos, etc. The mechanical digger was operated directly next to my 1920 house with no scratch, removed the sidewalk section and dug the hole. They used plywood to protect the grass and there was no damage. For the indoor work they constructed plastic sheet walls around the work area to contain dust and covered the floor, steps etc with paint cloths. This worked reasonably well - I needed to dust afterwards but it wasn't bad. I had been afraid that the jackhammer and cement saw would shake things in the house, but it really was minimal, not nearly enough to damage anything. The crew did a nice job of insulating the wall below the window, and the carpentry of the window framing inside and out was especially nice. Window quality itself is very good too, and slides from the side that I had asked for. The contractor also recommended and coordinated with a stucco guy to come stucco the newly exposed part of my foundation to match the rest of the house (price not included, that part hasn't happened yet). Oh, also the city permit price was not included in the price quoted here as it was unknown at the time of contracting. The only minor glitch to this job was that the City inspector didn't show up. The contractor took photos of the insulation etc before closing it up and rescheduled the inspection for the following week, which hasn't happened yet as I write this, but I don't anticipate a problem.
