About us

Minnesota Exteriors was founded in 1947 by the father of Marty Bennis. Marty & Zenalou Bennis grew the company throughout the next several decades until the they turned the business over to their four sons – Greg, Jeff, Dan & Tom. The four brothers continue the family tradition, making Minnesota Exteriors a third-generation, family-owned company. We’ve built & maintained our quality reputation for more than 60 years. With our long-term performance record, you can be sure we will be there when you need us. Since its beginning, our company has experienced steady growth & expansion. In the early days, we used a semi-trailer for a warehouse; today, it takes a 100,000 square-foot warehouse & showroom in Osseo, MN to service all our customers. With over 100 well-trained employees, we pride ourselves on getting the job done correctly, on time, & at affordable prices. We are members of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, National Association of the Remodeling Industry, Builders Club, & the Minnesota Multi-Housing Association. We believe that quality is the least expensive investment you can make. That’s why we provide & install only the finest exterior products available on the market today. We work with top national brands like James Hardie, Andersen, Rollex, LP SmartSide, EDCO, IKO, & WeatherShield. We’re so confident in the quality of our installation that we offer a limited lifetime warranty on workmanship, in addition to the manufacturers' warranties on materials. They were good. We lived down the street from the owner of the company, so we knew that we were getting a fair deal.

Due to hail damage, our entire roof was replaced. The salesperson was helpful, efficient, prompt, and carried through on everything he said he would do. He knew a great deal and offered us good choices. The crew that came out to replace the roof arrived on the scheduled date, did the re-roofing in a decent amount of time. We had been experiencing a leak prior to the re-roofing and they made sure to find out where it occurred and took care to check back on it a couple of times. Their work looks good and two years later we're very happy with the roof. Kudos to MN Exteriors!

The installation of the windows was done in one day and another crew came back a couple of days later to do the exterior wrapping. The crews wer very professional and the windows are wonderful. They did a fantastic job of cleaning up after themselves. We have no complaints

I was not very happy with their work. The communication was really bad. They did not do the door, that great a job. They are really quick and dirty. They had to come back and fix things. In the end it all worked out. They were the cheapest and I suppose we got what we paid for. But again they did a good job on the windows. I don’t know whether they don’t specialise in doors and whether they specialize only on widows I don’t know. Just because of the price I might use them in the future. The windows are nice and it seems we liked the way they planned and took off installing them. But they did not ask if we were happy because they were in a hurry. They had only so much time to spend. I was not here, my father-in-law was here. I did not want to take time off from work. Another thing they did was that they send us a letter saying for every positive response one gives them they would give $ 25 off on mine. Of course we did that. So they are bribing the customers to say good things about them. We are sort of caught in the middle. Of course we want their money back so my wife did it.

Our installers have been working with windows and doors for over 20 years. They are quite effiecient and since they were installing 2 windows and an entry door it is not unusual that they were able to complete their work in 1/2 a day. After the siding portion of your project was completed, some adjustments to your door were neccessary and we did stand behind our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty and took care of the issues for you. We are surprised to hear that you weren't happy with the work we did for you. Especially after you posted positive reviews about our company on a number of websites and you chose not to fill out the customer survey that was sent with your warranty packet. It appears that you may have misunderstood our online review incentive. We are simply encouraging customers who may not normally post on the web or even be familiar with the online review sites to let others know about their positive experience. Of course we have no control over whether people choose to abuse the incentive.

I have had continuing problems with the installation. The company states that because the manufacturer of the windows has gone out of business they have no obligation. My problem is not with the windows but the installation. They say that if they came out and worked on the window installation they would in effect be liable for an additional warranty on them. of course they are not honoring any warranty now so why should they be concerned about any supposed warranty they say they would incur. Out of 42 windows I am having problems with 8 windows. They said that my building has shifted and that is probably causing the problem. If my building had shifted I would have had problems with a lot more windows.
Description of Work: I bought an upgraded set of windows with installation the middle of 2007.

Once we signed the contract, the problems started. MEI used a sub-contractor to do the job. They finished the side and back, but left the front. There was also some extra caulking which we agreed to pay for. We called MEI once the sub-contractor left and told them that the front was not finished. They were surprised that it wasn't done and contacted the sub to finish the front. Once it was finished, we received an add on agreement for the caulking AND 5-additional squares of siding ($3,125). We called and said we had a contract that stated $8,750 for the side, back, and front of the house. We told them we did agree to pay for the extra calulking, but we did not authorize an additional 5-square add-on. A contract is a contract and if there were any add-ons, they needed to do this before the work was done. We did Ok the caulking and happily paid that. Eventually, MEI wanted to get this situation resolved and they agreed to discount the unagreed upon add-on. We agreed to pay the small amount since we wanted to get this resolved and get this entire thing behind us. Here are the problems we have with MEI: 1) Salesman that did not estimate the job correctly. 2) Attempting to change a contract 3) Add-ons that were tried to be slipped through AFTER the fact. There is a reason that 7 out of 11 consumers rated MEI less than A. I wish we would have researched them on Angies List before we signed a contract with them.
Description of Work: Finish siding job - approximately 1/2 of house with Maxi-Plank siding. Initial estimate and contract called for $8,750 to do the back, part of side, and front of house. The salesman told us the job was 14 squares at a cost of $625/square. The contract clearly had marked the back, side, and front of house to be finished.

Response from Minnesota Exteriors Inc
Minnesota Exteriors was contacted by this homeowner when he fired the original contractor he hired to install fiber-cement siding. We agreed to complete 14 squares of siding as outlined on the proposal. This was to include the front, rear and and left side of the house. During the project it was discovered that it would require an additional 5 squares of siding to complete the neccessary work. This resulted in a change order for the additional cost of the project. Our contract with the homeowner clearly stated the amount of siding and cost per square (which was used to calculate the changeorder). Our Angie's List profile clearly states that we use sub contractors for our projects. This is widely acceptable in the construction industry and all of our sub contractors are subject to a thourough screening process and many of them have worked with us for 10+ years. The salesman involved with this project is no longer an employee of Minnesota Exteriors and it is unfortunate that his initial proposal did not cover the entire scope of work the homeowner wanted done.

Terrible. First, several calls resulted in no answer and no response to a message left. Then, when I got through, I was told right away that the problem I was having was not covered by the installation warranty and would be extra. (I didn't even ask if it was going to be covered by the warranty, she told me right away) I felt like she was discouraging me from having the work done. I left my number, address, and info, and have never gotten a call back. She did warn me that with the work in North Minneapolis they were a couple weeks out, but it's been 2 months and obviously, I've moved on. I'm very disappointed that this company is unable to provide basic customer service.

This entire process was handled very sloppily and unprofessionally by MEI?s sales representative. He should have clearly noted the sliding directions for the windows in the order. He should have known what windows the manufacturer could and could not make. MEI should have processed the payment plan in a timely fashion so that I would not have had to sign it three times over a period of six months. My sister, niece, and I each took a day off work to accommodate the installers? schedule. Then I needed to leave strangers in my home to do the second installation as none of us could get additional time off. A quick note needs to be said about the crew that did the installation ? same crew both times. They were polite and professional and in no way responsible for any of the problems. They arrived on time and removed all of the debris when they left. I appreciate their work and efforts even though I am uncomfortable with leaving strangers unattended in my home. My sister, niece, and I do not get unlimited time off from our jobs. Taking a day of vacation and having it wasted was not appreciated. I found the company unwilling to take responsibility for their mistakes and very unresponsive to my concerns.
Description of Work: On June 7, 2010, I placed an order for five windows from Minnesota Exteriors (MEI). I signed off on the window design and questioned why the single sliders were not noted as which way to slide. The representative said that the person who came out to measure would make that note. The person who came to measure said that the representative needed to make that note in the order. Then I was informed that the design of the window in the living room needed to be changed for an additional $200. The design the representative and I discussed could not be made by the window company. I signed off on that change on July 5, 2010. I was called late in July to schedule the installation. It was a busy time at work but I had a doctor's appointment so I scheduled it for that day. I asked my sister and niece to come over to assist when I needed to leave for my appointment. EVERY one of the five windows was wrong. I was told later that the change order had not been sent to the window manufacturer. Since that manufacturer couldn’t make the window originally ordered, they created a substitute without discussing it with MEI. They also guessed at the direction the windows were to slide without discussing it with MEI. Three of the windows were returned, the two living room windows had been temporarily installed and would later be replaced. The windows were reordered and several weeks later, MEI contacted me to schedule installation. I asked the installer to confirm the direction the windows slid and he inspected them at that time (and they were correct). My sister, niece, and I were unable to get time off for the installation and the installers would not work on a Saturday, which forced me to leave strangers in my home when I was not present. The windows were purchased on a payment plan signed on June 7, 2010. I had not received an invoice or any information on the payment plan by October so I contacted MEI. They told me I needed to re-sign the agreement because the change order had cost additional money. I signed that on November 6, 2010. I do not know what was wrong with that document but was asked to sign another, which I did on December 1, 2010. The payment plan then started on January 1, 2011.

We Were recently notified by the Better Business Bureau of your complaint against Minnesota Exteriors. While the BBB already considers this issue closed we wanted to take the opportunity to respond. It Is unfortunate that your experience with MEI was not a pleasant one. We never like to disappoint a customer but occasionally, situations arise that are out of our control. We hope to use what we've learned from our experience with your windows to prevent similar issues in the future. We understand your frustration with the financing paperwork required for your project. Wells Fargo has very strict expectations for their forms and any slight change requires a new form. In your case that included changing the financed amount due to a change order and unfortunately there was a date entered incorrectly on the second form. If we were able to make these corrections without troubling you for your signature we certainly would have. While I am unable to offer you a refund of $600 or additional services at no charge, Minnesota Exteriors hopes that the enclosed gift cards may make up for some of the inconvenience you dealt with during your project. Perhaps you can treat your sister and niece to a nice evening out. Jenny Musolf Inside Sales Manager Phone (763) 493-5500 • Fax (763) 493-8980

We regret that you had a poor experience with Minnesota Exteriors. We have looked into the matter and unfortunately when you made your initial call to our office you spoke with one of our newer salesmen who wasn't aware that stone veneer was not something that we typically do. We did make an attempt to visit your home but there must have been a mix up because you were not at home. Please accept our apology for not giving you the customer service that is usually given. Part of the house was done by the builder in 2005. We bought the house last year, and it was recommended by the inspector that we finish the side and the rear of the home with gutters. We checked with 4-5 gutter people, and in the end we decided to go with Minnesota Exterors. They turned out to be the original company that installed the original gutters. We were very happy with their work and their price. We got atleast 3 bids, if not 4. They did a nice job. They cleaned up. It looked very professional when they left.

Wayne came out last year to give us a quote and we had the job done this year; he kept the same price. He was very patient and non-pressuring. We had five contractors quote on the job and we chose MEI because of the product, installation quality, and excellent ratings from Angie?s list. Everyone we talked to at MEI was pleasant and helpful. We especially enjoyed the installers Vidin, Alex, and Miroslav. Each day when I got home from work they stopped and took time to explain what was going on and how the job was going. They are very skilled craftsman and they took the time to do a great job. We were very happy with the job; it turned out better than any of our neighbors?s siding.

Company was contacted several times after hail storm to repair damage that occured on May 31, 2008. These folks were the ones who installed the initial siding. Weeks went by and no bid. When contacted repeatedly, they lied about a bid having been sent. I finally e-mailed them that they were fired, and I went with another contractor. They just got around to calling me last week (6/8-6/12/09) to follow-up on whether I wanted to contract with them. Totally unrealiable and dishonest. I would NEVER hire them for anything again based on this experience!
