I chose this company from Angie's list. We discovered the furnace was not working when we wanted a little extra warmth on one of the recent chilly days. Tim was able to come out within 24 hours. That did not work with my schedule so we set up a time for a week later. The night before the appointment, Tim called to confirm. The repair/removal of the bird went well. Tim was very professional and informative.
Description of Work: removed dead bird from furnace exhaust vent

Tim was at our house by 10:00 am and found a bad igniter. He had to go to a warehouse to get the part but he was back and had the job completely finished by 11:30 am. He wore booties to cover his shoes and we found him to be very knowledgeable and honest. He also noticed a burned spot near the top of the main ignition control board that other service contractors never mentioned. He said it was not the cause of our issue but that it could have been a past problem, or indicates a future problem. He promised to call back with a parts estimate so we can decide if we want to replace it pro-actively.
Description of Work: The furnace would not ignite on a 5 degree Saturday morning. We called at 8:30 am and he said he could come out as soon as he finished his current job. He gave us an estimate over the phone and also said there would be a trip charge if he didn't have the part in his truck. He said he didn't charge double on Saturdays like other companies do.

Terrific. Tim is absolutely professional. Wonderful work, service, and pricing.
Description of Work: Of course it was Friday night when one of my toilets decided to keep filling and not stop. (And the shut-off valve was too corroded to turn). After failing to find anybody else that would come out on a Saturday, I found Tim. He cordially agreed to call me at 4 pm, and at 4:05 he did. Within minutes he had arrived, assessed the problem, given me a reasonable estimate, and begun work. In short order, he rebuilt the tank, replaced the working mechanism, replaced the shut-off valve.

Markham's Tim Hamre has at least one regular painter(either a subcontractor or an employee). He relied on the painter for the estimate and most of the work, while Tim handled the contract, billing, and general direction "remotely." We contacted Markham late in the season(Sept.)for the work; the weather in that time frame was variable, and rain, and resulting moisture in the deck wood, interrupted the job progress. We also had to schedule the deck work around other hail damage repair work(siding, etc.). We thereby ran into the painter's previously scheduled vacation at one point. In the painter's absence, a substitute pair(not clear whether they were supplied through Tim Hamre's efforts or through the regular painter's efforts)tried to complete the job on a Saturday. The regular painter was quite thorough and exacting, and did an excellent job. Realistically, there was too much unstained deck/railing for the substitutes to complete from noon to dark on a Fall Saturday-they missed a few areas, and it rained again the next day. However, the regular painter did call us and return after that(in response to a call we'd made to Tim Hamre), and he did outstanding work in finishing off the missed areas.
Description of Work: Pressure washing and re-staining large deck with extensive railings and "dog run" ramps to below decks.

I noticed water leaking from the furnace. Several people told me the air conditioner might be starting to fail. Called Tim, who came and walked us through what our repair/replace options were. We elected to repair the unit that we had and hired him to do the job. We sent him the money to cover the cost of the parts, based on our earlier experience with him(I don't normally send money to people in advance of their doing work, but was confident-and correct-that Tim carries through on his obligations). He arrived on time on the agreed upon day. He spent several hours taking apart the unit and putting in the new one. He then shored up the condenser unit, that was precariously perched on a ledge next to the house and had sunk-unevenly-over the years. He also cleaned the unit out. Tim cleaned up after all the work, with no signs of all the activity that had gone on-except the good looking condenser unit. He showed me the rusted out parts and explained what had happened. Basically age. Was very thorough in every respect. Caveat: Work was done in the fall, and we have yet to use the AC...Will get back if there are any problems. Unlikely!
Description of Work: Tim replaced the A-frame coil for our air conditioner, after the drip pan rusted out. He also re-balanced and cleaned out our condenser outside.

The water was leaking a small amount from the pipe. We could sometimes turn the knob so the leak would stop, but it continued to get worse. Eventually the drip was constant. Tim knew exactly what the problem was and how to correct it. He inspected the pipe, clearly explained the issue and set right to work. He didn't have the right part (not a common one) with him, but he returned later the same day to complete the job. He did excellent work. It took longer than I thought, as the problem was more complex than it originally seemed. There have been no problems since the work was completed.
Description of Work: Fixed a leaky pipe that runs from the bottom of the toilet tank - the water shut off valve for the toilet. I thought $150 was a little spendy until I saw the work Tim did. He took the entire thing apart, fixed the problem so the parts worked the way they should have originally (they were probably wrong for years) and cleaned everything completely.

Good. Originally, the job was scheduled two weeks out, but the weather created an opening for him to come earlier. He came with another person to help with the job. He asked my opinion on possibly switching around the direction of the stairs, but was receptive when I disagreed and stuck with the original plan. The only thing I wish he would have done was confirm it was okay to switch a wooden ladder with an aluminum ladder. Although it turned out to be fine, it would have been nice to be notified before it was installed.

CUSTOMER DID NOT INDICATE ANY CERTAIN TYPE OF LADDER. IT IS IMPORTANT AS A CUSTOMER YOU COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CONTRACTOR IF YOU HAVE SPECIFIC NEEDS OR DESIRES WHEN IT COMES TO THE PROJECT AT HAND! WE WELCOME YOUR INPUT. SO MANY PEOPLE DO NOT SAY A WORD ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT, BUT THEN ARE QUICK TO GIVE THE CONTRACTOR NEGATIVE FEEDBACK LATER ON BECAUSE HE COULDN'T READ THEIR MIND. :~) JUST AN OBSERVATION.

I discovered the kitchen sink pull-out spigot in my hand with the base unit squirting late Fri. night. I decided to figure it out & fix it myself Sat. morning. I had difficulty fishing out the disconnected hose from down inside the base unit. So I called in a pro to do it & to check my non-working water softener on the same service call. All the List's top-rated plumbers in my vicinity could not come until Mon. or Tue. So we had a non-working kitchen sink, growing kitchen disorder, & an looming Sun. dinner to host. So I kept dialing plumbers. Tim from Markham courteously listened to my tale of woe. He promised to contact his workers to help me that day (Sat.). Tim called back soon & said he was unable to provide service that day, but would be willing to do it the next day (Sun.) without an emergency surcharge. Since Markham had an A rating on the List, I was impressed & eagerly accepted. Tim arrived promptly & completed the work professionally within the 1-hour minimum as agreed.

As I mentioned above, Tim is the most honest and helpful general all-around contractor I've had the pleasure of working with. His specialty is heating and a/c, and he has single-handedly kept my 1990 furnace and air unit running and in great condition. Tim is always reasonable with his bill, and he always performs the work as ordered. The thing that's great about Tim is his honesty. You don't have to worry that he is recommending work that doesn't need to be done. He sizes up the situation well, and makes honest recommendations about what needs to be done. He shows up on time, and does the job as advertised. He answers his phone in a timely manner, and is not above helping you out with a quick fix over the phone if needed (like lighting my pilot). He's personable and is very clean and detail-oriented. Part of me is a little nervous about making such a glowing recommendation about Tim, because I'm afraid he'll get too busy or expensive in the future, but he absolutely deserves it.
Description of Work: The week after Christmas, my furnace suddenly stopped working. Although the blower fan would come on, it wasn't producing any heat. Suspecting that something was wrong with the pilot light, I checked through the maintenance window and wasn't able to see any light. At that point, following the owner's manual (It's a 1990 edition), I attempted to restart the pilot myself, and was unsuccessful. Now I was really getting nervous. I shut the furnace down, and called Tim Hamre, who has done numerous heating, a/c, and electrical jobs on our home. Tim was able to work me through taking off some of the inspection covers and plates over the phone in an attempt to relight the furnace, and voil ', it was successful! We now had heat. Tim suspected it was the pilot assembly, and he was able to locate the part. Later that day, we were able to install the assembly after about an hour of work. Tim was prompt, clean and as usual, very helpful and above all honest. No unnecessary expenses ever with Tim.

He changed out the old shutoff valve and installed a new two-way valve. Did all the drains under the sink. We got an estimate from Tim in June 2007. The price was very good compared to another company's estimate. We accepted the bid and sent in a down payment the middle of July (only because he had good reviews on this website). Work began the next week. One thing we didn't realize was that this is not Tim's full-time job, so the job had to be scheduled over multiple Saturdays or weekday evenings versus one or two full, consecutive days. This project was finally completed the very beginning of September. (We had another bathroom downstairs to use in the meantime.) Tim did very good work. He was thorough in all of the project details from start to finish: drywall, plumbing, installing new wainscoting trim. He even replaced the tub drain assembly after the tub refinishing company re-assembled it wrong. (He does plumbing too; some other handyman companies said they don't do plumbing.) The project took longer than anticipated, but we are satisfied with the results.
Description of Work: Our leaking tub surround was removed. Mildewed drywall underneath was removed. Studs sprayed with mildew-resistant protectant. New drywall and plastic surround installed. New fixtures and tub drain installed. New surround and existing tub caulked. Trash hauled away.

He came out when he said he was and gave us multiple options for the repair. Wasn't the lowest quote but was close. Has a regular job so could only work on weekends, but was the one we thought was the most honest and direct. Work was done right and he made sure that it was done correctly. Did sub out the caulking of the tub and painting, he did the rest. Subs were great and very professional.

Tim arrived on time and was very friendly and informative. He started working on the furnace and I explained our concerns with the flame discoloration. He cleaned the furnace and then tested emissions. He explained that dust and debris can cause the flames to turn orange for a short period of time when the furnace starts. Everything checked out OK with the furnace so we moved on to the water heater. He turned the heat all the way down on the water heater and I drained all of the hot water from the system. He then removed the leaky emergency pressure release valve and replaced it with a new one. When it was all done everything was working (and not leaking) and I learned a few things in the process. Very pleasant man to work with.

Tim was very helpful. We originally called him about a leak coming from our bathroom. After inspecting our bathroom, he believed that the leak was caused by poor caulking around the tub, and set a time to come out and fix it. He stripped the old caulking and replaced it with new caulking. While he was here I mentioned our garbage disposal wasn't working, and I thought it was related too the wiring. He was able to quickly determine what the issue was and make a fix. He also suggested other things that might need repair in the future, but it wasn't a hard sell, which I appreciated. And I suspect we'll go with his recommendations because I do believe the things he noticed need to be done.

It went very, very well. Tim identified the problem immediately, explaining exactly what needed to be done. As he removed the old pipes, he showed me the problem, decades of buildup and, more seriously, a main pipe that should have been installed at a downward angle, but instead slanted up, contributing greatly to the problem. Tim is very knowledgeable and meticulous and I am very pleased. Tim is a gem!

Tim did an excellent, timely job. He was prompt in scheduling on site work with me and came when promised. He was courteous and easy to work with. When the door vendor twice damaged a door during shipment, Tim followed up with management to assure that a replacement came as soon as possible. The installation went smoothly on the scheduled day and was completed in the time promised. Tim cleaned up well after the installation. The doors still look great and work smoothly.
Description of Work: Tim Hamre measured, ordered, painted, and installed two sets of sliding wood closet doors for me.
