The process took 3 days, with workers showing up early each day. Day one was tear down and prep work for 4 new posts. I was impressed that Paul noticed some rotting wood along the deck side of the house, and replaced it in a way that should protect from any future moisture damage. On day two the frame and decking were completed, and when I got home on day 3 everything was done. We love Paul's suggestion of aluminum spindles on the railings. It has a nice dressed up look. This bid was the lowest of five, and yet we don't believe the other bidders could have done a better deck for us. From the quote to the finished product, Paul was very organized - which is probably how he could keep the cost down. His crew carefully worked around our flowers and left the entire site clean. Our neighbors have said how much they like the new deck, and we have already recommended Paul to a friend interested in replacing her deck.

The job went flawlessly from start to finish. We had a deck that seriously needed replacing, but it was a small job, and we were concerned that we wouldn't find someone who wanted to boher with a simple 10x12' project. Instead, Paul helped us choose the right materials so our new deck will be completely maintenance free. Paul and his crew were courteous and professional - they arrived on time, responded quickly via phone and email, and got the job done when they said they would. We love how it looks, and it's built far sturdier than our original deck. We particularly liked that Paul did the work himself - no subs. We heartily recommend Klingbeil Construction.

In the vast sea of builders in the Twin Cities, Paul is unique in his honest and sincere approach to quality and desire for each client to get their dream at a reasonable price. He worked with us to keep the project within our budget by pointing out where we can save money and informing us where it makes sense to spend the extra money. Paul kept us in the loop on the status of the project from the time we signed the contract to the final inspection. We were never frustrated or disappointed in the quality of the work or the schedule; the entire process was a pleasurable experience! Now that the porch and deck are finished, we are thrilled with the results! Something that took us so many years to save for and dream about is now a reality thanks to Paul and those that helped him on the job. We envision many years of the porch and deck being a central place to spend time with our children as they grow up. They will, no doubt, have great memories of summer BBQs and conversations on the porch and deck. We highly recommend hiring Paul! You will be extremely happy with the process and results as well! I hope that this review helps you make a decision to hire Paul since we wish him all the business he can handle. Thank you, Paul, for all of your work and attention to detail on our porch and deck!

When the old deck was removed, it was discovered that there was soil piled on top of the old cement deck. We had to get an excavator to remove the dirt and concrete. Paul, was patient with us while this was done as it put him off of his schedule. He was honest, personable, responsible and on time. Our overall experience was positive and we would use him again. I would recommend.

He was honest, timely and really went above and beyond with my project. The deck is beautiful and exactly what I wanted. He did a bit of extra stuff as well without being asked like replacing a piece of cedar siding on the 2nd level where I had a hole from a woodpecker.I would highly recommend Paul and would absolutely use him again should a need arise. Thanks for a great job Paul!

Paul arrived at the scheduled time for the pre-bid meeting wtih me. He asked good questions about how I wanted the project completed. He made good suggestions to improve the project. He spend a considerable amount of time discussing the project with me and making sure he both understood what I was looking for, and making value added suggestions that improved the project. He provided a written quote for the work that was in sufficient detail for me to feel comfortable that I knew what I would be getting for the price offered. I accepted his quote and signed his contract/work order He stopped by and did one more walkover with me on more details prior to ordering lumber and materials and to make sure we were both visioning the same outcome on the project. He told me the day he would likely start 2 weeks in advance and showed up in full force on that day. The work was done with exceptional quality, good communication and my wife and I are extreemly pleased with the deck and porch. While doing the siding repairs Paul encountered "conditions" that required a bit more repair. He contacted me and communicated clearly what he recommended. This was his "change order" opportunity and I feel that he was more than fair and completed that work very professionally and for a very fair price. The final bill was presented within 2 days of the completion of work and it was accurate and very fair.

The research for this project for a home addition to my parents home began well over a year ago. Our budget was not flexible and Paul was very up front with us on what could be done within that budget. I appreciated his approach and we accepted his bid. Throughout the project, he came up with creative ideas to help us save money, while getting the most for our investment. Paul and his team were great to work with. He would always let us know who was coming to the home on which day and they reliably showed up. He was easy to reach when needed. We had a few surprises, to be expected with an older home, but Paul helped us with everything to ensure that when the project was complete, there were no outstanding issues. He definitely helped us above and beyond. The project was completed on time and we are very happy with the results. I woud definitely work with Paul again on any home project. He was reasonably priced. did great quality work and was a great person to work with.

Paul came out to give us an estimate and provided samples of available decking. He suggested adding stairs and a small concrete slab to the side to merge into the entrance from the garage which was a great idea. We wanted to remove old concrete steps and replace them with steps made from the decking material. We also wanted to salvage the existing pergola which he agreed to do. The new deck included a bench for some additional seating on one side. Paul worked with the city which was great - that part of the project can be a challenge. We are very happy with Paul and the project went fast and looks great. Would definitely recommend him to others.

The job went extremely well overall. Paul was very responsive right from the start, and worked through a series of unexpected challenges with professionalism and a can-do attitude that really made a diffrerence for us. We were very pleased with the outcome of the project, as Paul needed to work closely with several other contractors at our request - including the painters, concrete and stone masons. Paul offered insightful ideas and was willing to listen to our suggestions in arriving at the best overall approach. Thank you Paul for doing a great job!

Paul always returned calls quickly, even after the job was done. He was very polite and nice to work with. We are so happy with our new front deck, and I would definitely call Paul again for any projects.
Description of Work: Paul and his son built a deck with a pergola for our front entryway. I was away during most of the project so Paul had to work independently. He did send me some photos via email. I was satisfied with the end result. I was comfortable having Paul have access to my house while I was gone and felt that he would be trustworthy. There were some slight nicks and such but that is to be expected on a project like this.

Paul was great to work with. Came out for an estimate & had samples of decking materials with him, and also provided design ideas. Answered our ongoing questions throughout the process but was not pushy about having us make a decision any quicker than we were ready to do so. Helped brainstorm for cheaper alternatives to an all-Azek deck, which was quite expensive. We considered an all-cedar deck, partial cedar & low-maint materials, or all-low-maint materials. We decided to go with Azek flooring and then he built the railings out of a Trex product. This seemed to be a pretty creative solution to keep the costs down a bit while still requiring very little maintenance.
Description of Work: Replaced our old cedar deck (about 12 x 16) & landing/steps with low-maintenance deck flooring (Azek), rails, & steps plus maintenance-free lattice beneath the deck & porch. Footings were not replaced.

From the time Paul came to our home to give us an estimate, we were impressed with his punctuality and professionalism. His rates were fairly reasonable, in comparison to two other deck builders. After we hired him, he got all of the paperwork into the city in a timely manner and was always on time. He came back even after the work was completed, to look at one spot that he wasn't so sure about, and tweaked it a bit. He was fast, efficient, and a very nice man to do business with.

The deck looks amazing - we are thrilled with how it looks, how solid it feels, and get overwhelmingly positive comments from everyone. Paul was very easy to work with. He came when he said he would - he did a very nice job of keeping the work area clean and as safe as possible. With two little kids, I really appreciated how carefully he kept track of nails, etc., and did not leave debris laying around. When some components had to be ordered, he let us know when he expected to be working again and generally kept us informed of his progress and next steps. This was very helpful because we laid river rock under the work area and we worked with him to come up with a schedule for us to do that without impacting his progress. There were a couple of occasions during the build where the deck wasn't looking quite how we had expected it (they were minor, but we are very detail-oriented). Paul was very responsive in coming up with solutions to get us back to our original vision and we were pleased with the end result. If we had the opportunity to work with Paul again - which we would do! - we would probably be more careful to talk through some of details in advance just to avoid any questions later. Overall, Paul did a great job. We felt like we got an excellent value for our money.
Description of Work: We hired Paul to remove decking from an existing deck and re-deck, and to build a larger, lower-level deck. The two decks were connected by a single step, and the lower deck had a walk-off onto grade on one side and a staircase on another. The deck is Ipe (Ironwood) with hidden fasteners and a standard aluminum railing with corner posts.

The experience with working with Paul was one of the very best we've ever had with a contractor. He was extremely professional, very conscientious, and did excellent work. In the process of tearing down the deck, Paul discovered the prior deck had not been flashed properly and, as a result, there was some water damage where the deck attached to the house. Paul repaired the water damage immediately without even talking about additional cost. Additionally, we decided to replace the structure of the deck (which was not part of the original plan). In the end, the cost increase as a result of these changes was very nominal - my best guess is that Paul only charged us for the additional materials. What I appreciated most about working with Paul is that I trusted him 100%. He was fully committed to doing the job right - a good example is his diligence in fixing our water damage without even asking about money. The final product is beautiful and we have received numerous compliments from our neighbors and friends. We look forward to using Paul again in the future for other home improvement projects.
Description of Work: Paul tore down an existing multi-level deck and replaced it with a new deck. The original plan was to re-use the existing supports but in the process of tearing down the deck, Paul discovered water damage in the structure and where the deck attached to the house. Paul ended up replacing the entire deck and repaired water damage in the sheathing of the house and siding. The decking on the completed deck is cedar and he used aluminum ballusters.

We really couldn't have been happier with our experience with Paul. Our decks are very large (about 800 sq ft total) , with one about 9 feet off the ground and the other 12 feet. So, we knew it was going to be a big project. Paul was out to give us an estimate on the same day we called. He was helpful in giving us his thoughts on the new section we wanted to add to the deck, and he was willing to work around our schedule because we hired him in April, but didn't want him to start until after June 1st. He was very responsive to any and all questions and always let us know when supplies were being delivered and where in the process things were. The deck was for the most part completed in about 2 weeks (what he estimated) and that was even after several days of getting rained out. They were very good about cleaning up each night and were careful of the plants we have under and around the deck. Paul met with the city inspector at the beginning of the project and at the end. We are extremely happy with the way the deck looks and with Paul & crew. We will definitely hire them again if/when we have other projects.
Description of Work: Paul and his crew removed our 2 old decks and replaced them with Azek decking and an aluminum rail. He reused what he could of the old framing (some of it was rotten). Also, he added a new section to 1 of our decks.

Paul did a great job communicating throughout the process. He was very punctual, and professional. I ran into problems with the building inspector as to what type of decking material I can use. Paul handled this situation well being very patient and helped me work with Home Depot, the Lino Lakes building inspector's office, and the vender to determine what type of material I can use. I would definately use Paul Klingbeil Construction again, and would recommend using him to anyone who is interested in building a deck.

We're very happy. Paul is easy to work with and communicated with us on a daily basis, sometimes a couple times a day. He adapted as we tossed in some extra elements and/or made slight revisions in what we wanted him to do. He organized a couple subs around our schedule and generally really kept on top of things. In the middle of the job, he was involved in a traffic accident that totaled his primary vehicle. This would normally be a good excuse for another contractor to flake out and start letting things slip on the job - but Paul kept on task and on schedule.
Description of Work: Laundry room remodel, re-tile of entry, drywall and misc other fixes. We had a large laundry area that we wanted to convert into a power room with laundry. Paul discussed design options with us and we settled on a half-wall dividing the spaces. This job included plumbing the new toilet and sink, relocating the washer/dryer hookups and roughing in/installing a basement laundry sink (all via plumbing sub contractor); removing acoustic ceiling texture, building the halfwall and partial drywalling in the laundry; replacing/installing tile in the laundry area, entry and hall (approx 300 sq ft - also through a tiling sub-contractor); and misc fixes from a previous remodel poorly executed... matching a missing handrail for a stairwell, fixing a crooked drywall job, etc.

Paul was painting a pergola this spring he installed last fall and I mentioned we were looking to extend our deck. He gave me an estimate as soon as he was finished painting. His was the second out of 2 bids and came in about $2000 less. He was able to start the project within a week or two and had it completed in 3 days (hampered slightly by some rainy weather). The deck extension was approx. 14 ft by 20 ft.

Paul and his crew were excellent to work with from start to finish. Paul was prompt in responding to my request for a bid, he offered knowledgable, practical and viable ideas to address a difficult situation (top half of the Gazebo was fine, bottom half was rotted pretty significantly including the under-layment below the Gazebo), his bid was competitive with others I received (4 bids overall), and he was willing to start the project in a very reasonable time frame. Once the project started, Paul and his crew member Mike were both very proficient, quick on the job, diligent in cleaning up at the end of each day and offered creative ideas along the way that made the finished product look even better than we had originally hoped for. The job was finished in a very reasonable timeframe. The Gazebo looks great, the deck feels solid again, and we could not be more pleased. Paul and his crew did a great job.
Description of Work: Rebuilt Gazebo, and refurbished deck around the Gazebo. Replaced rotted wood around the entire lower half of the Gazebo, replaced rotted boards on a very large deck surrounding the Gazebo, and addressed an area of the deck that was 'lifting' during winter due to heavy clay conditions.
