We were doing quite a bit of remodel work to prep our house for rental. We had a tree to remove and its stump to grind prior to a project with the front patio, and a storm decided to roll through just before they did the removal work for us. As a result, we had quite a few other broken limbs, debris, and other maintenance pruning around the property. They were able to get all of it scheduled for us, and they held to the timeline I had requested to allow our other projects to proceed as planned. Ben Johnson and Rainbow Treecare have worked with us over the last several years, and we have now had them out a dozen or so times. In each instance, I have been thoroughly impressed with the quality of their work, the friendliness and knowledge of their staff, and the pride they take in their trade. I have lived in a number of states, and I have worked with many tree companies. I can honestly say Rainbow Treecare is lightyears beyond the others overall. I now live in another state, and I wish they were out here! I would recommend them to anyone that cares about the health of their trees!

Last summer was a busy season because of storms, but Rainbow made an estimate and arrived to work approximately when they anticipated they could. The actual work was done professionally. Clean up was good. They even distributed some of the chips under another tree as mulch, when asked.

Best possible service that you could imagine - professional, knowledgable, polite, punctual, fast. Arrived on time; worked quickly and safely; thorough cleanup of branches & leaves. No damage to lawn or anything else. I didn't shop around, so I have no perspective on competitors' prices, but I definitely feel that I got my money's worth. I will (and did) use them again.

Russell arrived on time to our estimate appointment. He assessed the situation, made notes, excused himself to go to his car to print out the estimate. When we saw the price, we signed on the dotted lime. The next day two men arrived on time. Without talking to each other, one climbed the tree, cut off and dropped limbs to the man below who walked them to a shredder to be made into tiny pieces. When all of the limbs were off the red cedar tree, a man in a cherry picker arrived and with a chain saw cut the 75 year old tree into manageable pieces. A hand truck arrived and the tree was moved piece by piece to the shredder. When the job was done, the trunk we wanted as a location for a planter was leveled, the ground was raked and swept. It took less than an hour and a half for team to dispose of the tree. The City of Minneapolis wanted to charge us $2000 to cut down the tree and put the cost on our taxes with an 8 % interest charge if the total amount was not paid in six months. The other estimates we received from other tree services ranged from $2000 up to $3000. We were very impressed with the speed and precision of the removal of the tree with not a scratch to the new siding on the house. If we had more to trees to be removed, Rainbow is the ONLY company we would call.

The original estimate was performed by Sterling in a professional and friendly manner approximately one month ago. The actual work was done Tuesday, the 17th of September. The men came at 8 a.m. as promised and sometime later Sterling, the estimator, arrived to go over details with the three man crew. All were very professional, knowledgeable and hard working. The interaction between my wife, myself and the workers was very good and informative. They carried out the work extremely well and wasted no time. They were very careful to avoid any potential damage to my new roof and other property and afterwards they cleaned and raked up all the limbs and other leaf debris blowing the roof and the driveway. We have used them before and would definitely use them in the future.

Rainbow Tree Care was bit on the pricier side but the job they did was well worth the price. They trimmed back a 2+ story high Norway Maple in our back yard that had not been pruned or trimmed for over 20 years. Now sunlight and rain reach the yard underneath the tree and the tree also looks much healthier. Due to the three damage from the "Solstice Storm" in SW Minneapolis, they couldn't give us a specific date beyond a blanket " by the end of the month" statement as to when they would be available, but they said that if they were in the area and had time they would do it without notice. I came home and they did such a good job cleaning up that I didn't recognize the yard. Not only did they trim the tree they cleaned up and raked my yard. Thanks for that!

I have been using Rainbow Tree for years, usually once a year. Jesse is now my arborist and after they had done a buckthorn removal for me in late May, I decided I needed some more work done. I thought the estimate to be reasonable and though I had to do a follow up phone call to see where I was on the schedule, the 4 person crew arrived promptly on the date scheduled. They worked extremely hard, asked if I was happy with each shrub, and if I felt some more pruning was needed, they cheerfully complied. This was money well spent and I will continue using their services annually. I am extremely happy with their work.
Description of Work: Shrub pruning on 3 huge burning bushes that were out of control, hand pruning a spreading yew, cleared my side yard which had overgrown with buckthorn, boxelder, virginia creeper, night shade and ash (then treated the area with herbicide to keep growth from coming right back.

I purchased a home in Edina in 2011. For more than 20 years, the previous home owner had used Rainbow Tree Service to protect several very large elm trees. Treatment included injections every three years. This was the treatment program recommended by Rainbow for elm trees. This spring, we noticed leaves dropping from one of the trees. Rainbow was called on July 13, 2013. After trading voice mails, on July 26, a Rainbow arborist inspected the tree and informed me that it was infected and needed to be completely removed. Despite the existence of a service guarantee, much to my surprise, their guarantee was not for three YEARS but for three SEASONS. And that the "season" had ended on May 31, 2013 and therefore, would not cover the treatment or removal trees. Ironically, their arborist inspected the trees in August 2012 and pronounced them in good health. Additional opinions from licenses arborists agreed that the tree was badly infected and should be removed. It was also agreed that the tree had been infected for some time. Possibly last season. But WELL before the May 31, 2013 guarantee period. In a followup conversation with Rainbow management on 7/29/2013, they also acknowledged that the tree had been infected prior to the May 31, 2013 guarantee end date. And that it was because I elected NOT to continue service that they were not obligated to fulfill the terms of their guarantee. Even though I have not been a long time customer. My trees have been. I will never work with someone who does not stand behind their work. Shame on you TREATMENT HISTORY 6/6/1990 treatment 6/2/1993 treatment (36 months since previous treatment) 7/8/1996 treatment (37 months since previous treatment) 5/26/1999 treatment (34.5 months since previous treatment) 6/10/2002 treatment (36.5 months since previous treatment) 6/3/2005 treatment (36 months since previous treatment) 8/22/2007 treatment (38.5 months since previous treatment) 7/13/2010 treatment (35 months since previous treatment) 7/26/2013 recommended tree removal (36.5 months since previous treatment)
Description of Work: After +20 years of preventative treatments, my elm trees were diagnosed as infected and removal required. This came 2 months after the service warranty had expired. No coverage would be granted despite the fact that the trees became infected during the coverage period.

Response from Rainbow Treecare West Metro
Dear Angie’s List Member, We deeply regret that your elm tree has contracted Dutch elm disease. It is our mission to promote healthy urban trees, and we have a special passion to save elms. Currently, Rainbow Treecare protects more elm trees than any other company in the world. We have been effectively protecting the elms on your property for your home’s previous owners for the past 20+ years. During that time we consistently inspected and re-proposed the preventive treatments for Dutch elm disease every three years, as our certified arborists determined that Dutch elm disease was a threat for these trees. After each inspection, the previous owners responded to us and authorized us to perform the re-protection of their elms. We are committed to maintaining our clients’ elm trees. We inspect each elm during the second half of the summer before they are due for re-protection. On August 3rd, 2012 we inspected both of your elm trees and at that time they showed no signs of Dutch elm disease. However, our consulting arborist did inform you of the fact that there was high disease pressure in the area due to standing infected elms and that re-protecting the elms one growing season early should be considered. Treating early under those circumstances is supported by the official fungicide product label. In August 2012, we provided a written proposal to you for the re-protection of the elms to be done that season or the following year. Unfortunately, you did not authorize the re-protection of the elms. We warranty our injections for three seasons and not three years to ensure they are sufficiently protected by the fungicide that protects them. In addition, our guarantee clearly states, “Costs for removal and/or disposal of diseased trees are not covered by this warranty.” Our records indicate we contacted you 3 times to re-protect your elms and maintain their warranty. Timeline of events: 1. No response to our recommendation on August 3rd, 2012 to either re-protect your elms early or have them treated on schedule the following year. 2. No response was received to our spring letter sent to you asking for approval for the re-protection of your elms. 3. No response was received to our second spring letter asking for approval for the re-protection of your elms. 4. July 17th, 2013 we received a phone call from you requesting an appointment to inspect your elm because it was dropping leaves. 5. Appointment was made on July 23rd. Our arborist confirmed that your elm had contracted Dutch elm disease. By that time, your elm warranty had been expired for several months. You still have one elm that could likely be saved if action is taken to treat that tree and to sever the roots between your infected elm and your uninfected elm. We urge you to do that to preserve the elm you have left. A neighboring elm, which has also been protected for 20+ years by Rainbow Treecare, is now at risk of becoming infected via a root graft from your diseased tree. Rainbow Treecare is installing a trench at NO COST to protect it. Sincerely, Deb Peterson
Stephanie M.

Our initial service was in the summer of 2012. We had two dead pine trees removed from our yard and a crab apple tree near the house cleaned up. The arborist who came out to do the initial estimate on our property was prompt, did not feel like he was rushing through the process and spent time talking about the tree health of all our trees. When the initial service was done, the teams were prompt, didn't rip up the yard and cleaned up afterwards. Our oak tree was done in winter of 2012 at their recommendation. We were out of town when they performed the service and could hardly tell they had been there. We consider the price worth the quality of service, knowledge of staff and overall professionalism and will continue to call on Rainbow Treecare every few years to help keep our trees in good health.

This was an appointment just to get a prognosis on the health of an ornamental Red Maple in our yard. It had suffered badly (we thought) in the winter of 2011, and we had given it a year to try and come back but it was not looking likely. The arborist suggested that while the early warm up and subsequent hard freeze of that early spring may have been the last straw, it looked more like root girdling was the ultimate problem. Sadly there is not much to be done for our tree at this point, so we got an estimate for getting it taken down and a few other cleanups done on the property. The company was responsive on the phone setting up the appointment, and the arborist was right on time. It was nice to talk to someone who really knew about the tree and had some suggestions for how to keep this from happening again in the future, rather than the army of "just cut it down" tree services we have been fending off ever since it started looking sick. We had been given a personal recommendation for this company by a friend, and they definitely stood up to expectations.

There were many objects that could have been destroyed if done wrong, including our house, fence, power/phone/cable lines, hedge, other trees, etc. Work had to be coordinated with the power company, as the power line to the house had to be taken down during the job. Also, there was limited room for them to get their equipment into the yard. The work was done before spring thaw to minimize damage to the lawn. Happy ending, with work done on time, as agreed upon, and no damage to anything! Excellent service, excellent cleanup and stump grinding. (The stump was about 7 feet in diameter.) We have used Rainbow several times, and have never been disappointed with the service, quality of work, cleanup or professionalism of the crews. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Easy to arrange a time for the estimate appointment. He called an hour before to let me know he wouldn't be able to meet at the arranged time and I appreciated the call. It was an early morning appointment so calling just an hour before was understandable. He was able to come out later and just leave the estimate even though I was not home at the time. He followed up with a phone call that he had left the estimate. Overall, I thought they were professional from my initial call to getting the estimate. I didn't chose them only because the estimate was $50 more than another I received from a different company that also gets good reviews on Angie's List.
Description of Work: Provided an estimate to remove a ~15 foot Evergreen tree and the stump.
