Everything went *perfectly*. From the initial meeting to the final walk through and tweakings, these guys are perfectionists. Communication is key through these large scale projects and we always felt like we were in the loop and knew what to expect from day to day. With other large projects we've done to our fixer upper, there'd be days crews just didn't show up, work stalled for several days at a time... that would NEVER happen with this team. From Ron (landscaper) to Dawn (designer/project manager) to Layla (coordinator extraordinaire) to Javier (foreman extraordinaire) and the awesome, incredible, hardworking crew, we couldn't have a single complaint. Well, I had one complaint. I didn't like one design aspect they had installed - a bridge over the dry creek bed- and my husband thought, Eh, let's just keep it, it's fine. But, I'm very particular and wanted to love every last element of the project. I told Ron and Dawn and they just met my complaint graciously and said, We get it, you don't like it, it's gone. And they worked with me to get something that I would like. How easy is that? No hard feelings, no hm'ing and ha'ing over getting rid of it, no complaints about the extra work I caused them. Just, Done! Fabulous. One day, the project stalled while they were working on our back patio. We wondered what was happening until Ron showed up and took some measurements and had the crew tear it out and start from scratch. He didn't think the height was quite right and would have caused the grading of the backyard to be steeper than he'd have preferred. Though they could have made it work and saved themselves a day of work, he insisted that it be done exactly as specified. The crazy thing is, we never would have known; this company has integrity. We also ended up removing additional trees so that more sunlight filtered to our previously VERY shady back hill (that they generously referred to as a slope). As a result, the slope could accommodate more sun-loving plants, so they modified their plantings so we'd have a more colorful backyard. They put extreme thought and detail into every aspect of the project. Remember those stepping stones I mentioned? Something they didn't have to do, it wasn't in the plans, but, it's my husband's FAVORITE PART of the project. Go figure. Honestly, we received bids that were less, but I know there is no way that anyone would have done this project as thoroughly, addressed possible concerns so regularly, dealt with my next door neighbor like it's no big deal (and me, for that matter), come up with creative and attractive solutions to a very serious water issue, and done it all with integrity, exactness, and beautifully enough to make even me happy! Seriously guys, don't hire anyone else to do your landscaping. You won't regret hiring L&R. You get what you pay for and we got the best.
Description of Work: We had a complete overhaul of our yard - front and back. Old sidewalk and patio ripped out and replaced with pavers, hill with steep incline set with boulder outcroppings and plants, drainage system installed to curb spring flooding, dry creek bed (part of drainage solution) installed, tree removal, sodded entire yard, grading of backyard, new plants for front and back, edging, cocoa colored hardwood mulch, new [perfectly constructed] back steps & railing, irrigation system and lighting. And a couple extra little creative elements like a stepping stone from our wide front entrance to our side yard, stepping stones to our hose, etc., that they just thought of and did. Phew!

Work went extremely well. We were most impressed with Ron's sense of design of the overall project and our project manager (Dawn) kept us informed and involved throughout the project. Although we thought we knew what we wanted they both did a great job with excellent suggestions and led us to a design that we are very happy with. The whole crew was really easy to work with, professional, listened well, and they all have the highest level of expertise. I would highly recommend them.

The entire project went great. Ron was great to work with in coming up with a design. He listened to our input, and came back with a design that matched exactly what we were looking for, even if we didn't articulate it in detail. They never pushed us into a bunch of upcharges. We were always given updates on the progress of the project. Crew members were polite, efficient, and careful around the house. The finished project came out better than we could have ever expected. The entire process was a breeze. So glad we chose to work with them.
Description of Work: Project involved totally redoing the backyard after we had a home addition project the prior year. Regraded and sodded entire backyard, removed rock landscaping from around old fence line. Rebuilt brick patio behind house. Built new paver patio off of deck with grotto and arbor features. Placed rock landscaping around 1/2 of hours. Came up with design for variety of plants around new landscaping areas.

They were fantastic! Ron was punctual for our initial meeting. He listened to what I wanted, took notes and measurements. A proposal was emailed to me within days. After receiving the initial proposal, we had a few additional items added to the project. An updated proposal followed. Once we had agreed on scope, Ron provided drawings for us to review and approve prior to the project starting. Landscaping lights was not something I had requested (or thought of) and Ron included them in the drawings. The lighting makes the front yard spectacular at night. The project started a bit later than anticipated due to the weather (rain) but once they started the project was finished within the timeline they had given us. The crew was amazing! They cleaned up every evening before leaving and did an excellent job on the install. Our yard looks fantastic!!
Description of Work: L&R designed a whole new front yard for us. The project included design and installation of planting beds along the front and sides of the house, grading of the entire front yard, installation of several trees, resetting of a paver walkway, repair and regrouting of our front step, instillation of irrigation and drip line systems and landscape lighting.

WOW!! This company provided A+ service in all aspects from beginning to end. Initially I had 4 assessments by landscaping companies for this work. I am very particular and wanted the work to be both structurally sound (given that the retaining wall was very high and abutted right next to my house) as well as aesthetically pleasing. Ron (the owner) came out, on time, completely understood what I was looking for, and promptly got back to me with an detailed estimate. The other 3 companies were either overwhelmed by the engineering required to replace such a tall wall (2 of them tried to design a tiered system to get around it that would have been bizarre looking) and the other was exorbitantly priced (2x the cost of L&R and the others). I sent an email of a photo of the decorative stone I wanted that I saw online and they knew exactly what kind of stone it was, sent Dawn over in her car with samples to show me, and we set a date for the work. The project was a big one, having to excavate a very large hole in my yard for the engineering, build in structural support, back fill the hole with the dirt, place the decorative rock over the concrete wall and mortar it, install draining, rebuild stone stairs, build 2 curved smaller retaining walls, replace brick flooring for the landing, resod an extensive area, replant bushes, and replace 4 dead bushes. The workers were amazingly quiet, organized, clean, and professional. They worked tirelessly from morning until 5pm every day for several weeks. Even on some days that it rained they created a tarp over the area to continue working. They roped off the area with yellow tape every evening for safety. Periodically Ron would stop by to check on the crew and check in with me to make sure things were going as I expected. Questions I occasionally sent via email to Layla in their office were promptly and courteously answered. The price for this project was very reasonable given the extent of the project and the perfection with which it was performed. I highly recommend this company. I fully expect to use them again in the future for additional landscaping needs.

They did a great job during a very hot part of the summer regrading around the house and installing the swale, paver walkway and removing the stump. The job we thought was overpriced but had high expectations for the quality of the work due to the money. We wanted it done right. The company was responsive in all our requests. The only disappointment was we had to call them back multiple times to repair the sprinklers. We have had some heavy rains and the swale and pop up drain is working as designed. The workers were very careful and respectful. They do good work but you will pay top dollar for their services.
Description of Work: They regraded the landscape around the entire house. When the house was built, the grading was done improperly and settled to a point where rain would run toward the house. They also installed a swale behind a boulder wall and connected it to another swale that led to the street. They also removed a stump in the yard and repaired the sprinkling system where it was affected by the work. Also removed a broken cement patio slab in the backyard and removed a front sidewalk and replaced it with a paver walkway. They also added new grass where the works was done and added mulch to the affected areas.

we decided not to go with them, just too pricey for us
Description of Work: Arrived on time to give an estimate for doing a paver patio and walkway, Also discussed some other wonderful ideas for landscaping. The initial bid was way out of our price range @ around $20000 for 700sq ft patio and walkway along with some drainage wells. I told them I wanted to see a cheaper version and they emailed me another estimate for a 500 sq ft patio and only one drainage well but it was still much higher than some other bids i had recieved. But their customer service and attention to detail seemed to be excellent!!

L&R did a wonderful job on our landscaping project. Their attention to detail was awesome. Once the project started, it took the less than 10 days to complete it. The work area was kept neat and tidy. They were perfectionists with respect to the paver patio, a circle design with a curved walkway. Many of the pavers had to be cut in order to get the perfect fit and look. The result was outstanding. Whenever there was an issue, they were quick to come up with a good solution. For instance, there was a concern that the installation of edging around an established tree would cause damage to the root system. Instead of cutting into the turf, L&R installed additional soil and sod around the tree so that the edging could be installed in the new grade without touching the tree's root system. Many sprinkler heads had to be moved as part of the project and now the sprinkler system works better than it did beforehand. The plant selections and locations exceeded our expectations. All in all, we were pleased and impressed with job done by L&R.

5 years ago L and R Suburban Landscaping Inc did work for me. I got their name from Angie's List. They were top 2 ranked as of 2008. The landscaping work was SOLELY for water prevention in my basement which happened twice prior to their work. I got 3 estimates. Theirs was slightly highest ($2200 I think?), but it was the most conservative, thorough so I went with them. Plus they had great reviews from Angie's List, so that was important that their history was solid. Fast forward 5 years. I got water in my basement again after a averagely heavy rain this spring. Long story short: I thought for sure it was the semi permeable barrier under the rock that was the problem (I was wrong, but i was certain I wasn't at the time and was pretty upset). I called L and R. Ron came out free of charge within a couple days, despite being past warranty. He evaluated and determined that voles had damaged the barrier near the house a few feet from where the water came out. He showed me that they used 2 barriers, not just one. He was very nice and thorough about it. He was clearly right. I was very happy the work from 5 years ago was intact minus a small fix up due to the voles. Now, Get this!! Ron offered to fix it for free: add special crushed rock that voles can't dig through, pack it, put a fresh barrier on (on that part and wrap it around the house to be safe and add a bit of lanscaping rock top. I even said that it was not his fault, offered to pay myself, and he declined. (It was probably a few hundred dollars of work or more for FREE) He showed me how to evaluate the base of the house each fall to check for voles and told me how to get rid of them if needed. The work was done quickly and the worker even cleaned up loose rock around the landscaping that has been knocked into the lawn over the fall and winter. I offered twice that he did not have to pay. He just said "Give me a good recommendation" (I did not mention Angie's List). So, here is L and R's good recommendation: A free fix up (that was not their fault) past warranty with a smile. That is good consumer service to say the least. Thanks Ron! and Thank you Angie's List for the review in the first place.

We reviewed plans from four landscapers and contracted L & R to do the project, although they were among the highest bids. The difference was their superior design and the degree of detail in the overall project contents. This included underground drainage, complete sod replacement, sprinkler replacement and experience with city officials that would approve our plans, or not. Not one of these things were addressed by the other landscapers. Sadly, we put our project on hiatus because of a sudden employment shakeup and were pleased with how L & R addressed the matter. This company is a dying breed exemplifying integrity in all facets. We hope things settle in our world when we can contract them to fulfill the beautiful design.

Very poorly. Waiting two weeks for an estimate, with no flexibility being offered to come by on the weekends or at another time after canceling my original appointment is poor service.
Description of Work: I called the company and requested an estimate for some landscaping work that I needed done around my house. The earliest appointment offered was a week later. Ok, no big deal I figure that I can wait a week. On the day of the appointment, the office manager called me and told me that she had to cancel my appointment. The soonest one for rescheduling was six days later. This now makes it two weeks from the original time that I contacted the company until they could give me an estimate. I am going to look elsewhere for a landscaper. Waiting two weeks for an estimate makes me seriously question what the timeline (if any) would be in place for any work performed by them.

There are a few more details to this appointment that require further clarification. (member name removed) called to schedule the estimate appointment on 4/10/13. He specifically requested a later afternoon appointment which could not be accommodated until Tuesday 4/23 for a 3:30 appointment time. There were appointments available and offered earlier in the day the week of 4/15, but these were not acceptable, and of course the later day appointments are always the first requested and scheduled. Our company performs commercial snow plowing until 4/1 yearly. This year, however, even though the snow season officially ended on 4/1, our winter plowing customers required snow plowing services several times during the month of April and this included the night of 4/22/13. Both of the owners have plowing responsibilities and were out all night performing services. This along with many areas that are covered with snow again and cannot be visually seen for the free estimate appointment is the reason that the appointment was being rescheduled. Many appointments have necessitated rescheduling due to the unusual snow activity this month. (member name removed) was advised of this and was offered another appointment on Monday 4/29 at 11:00 am. He indicated that he wanted to schedule this appointment, but if he could get the other landscaper that he got a bid from to actually come out and start the work on or before 4/29, he was going to call and cancel the appointment with us. He did call about 1/2 hour later and cancelled the appointment with us. The weather this year has been very challenging in regard to the start of the landscape season. And we will just be starting our first installation later this week because the ground has still been frozen and work could not yet begin. Only the owners are scheduled to perform estimate appointments. This enables us to see and understand every detail related to potential landscape installations. This is part of our overall quality control and ensuring the complete integrity of the detailed documented proposal as well as the complete customer satisfaction of the landscape installation itself..

Our house is a raised rambler (built in 58') that had 10-12 steps from the driveway up to a walkway leading to the front door. The back side of the house had a big deck that was 20+ years old. Front hill, steps and area's around the house were showing signs of erosion. The deck was old and coming apart. We needed a total landscape renovation front and back. We hired L&R based on their *representation, professionalism, design work, flexibility, and price. * Ron first met with us in the early fall 2012 to discuss the project. Right away we noticed his enthusiasm. He was also coming up with great ideas based on our vision of the project.
Description of Work: Excavated then landscaped the front of the house with boulders, stone steps, rip-rap rock, mulch, and left space for plantings that we chose to do ourselves this spring (2013). Used pavers to dress up front and side stoops. Re-graded side of the house and used stone edging to border rip-rap rock and a few boulders. Removed old deck in the back of the house and replaced with a beautiful paver patio, crushed granite walkway surrounding a raised brick fire pit ring. They had to do some masonry work on two basement windows, closing them with cinder block that matched with the foundation. This was in preparation for the fill that covered them to support a paver stoop leading to the paver patio.

We were very happy with the work done, and all of the people representing L&R, from office staff to people in the field, were professional, friendly and cooperative. We first got an estimate from Lyle, but we realized that we wanted to change our design and discussed this over the phone. They were happy to take our new rough sketch and redo their plan. The price was a little steep, but the work was professionally done. The design really fit what we wanted, and the border and pavers on the stoop looked especially nice. Lyle handed over the job to someone else. I wish I remembered his name, because he did a great job and I would like to compliment him as well. Anyway, it was nice to have Lyle help with the transition and introduce the guys doing the work to me. They left the workplace neat and clean, so that was great, but the head person took the time to explain a few things to me when I had questions, and he asked my opinion when making decisions on border placement. Even the person who came to seal the patio a week later was easy to work with, quick and professional. It was a great experience overall.

A gutter extender came off our gutter downspout due to our kids chasing one another around, and we did not know for some time. The water from the downspout was channeled along our lower-level windows, and instead of the water being directed away from the windows, it was pushed up against the window, causing damage to the window. I found L&R on this list, and they seemed to be the grading specialists. A rep came out and could quickly see the problem and how to fix it. I also had them look at and repair another area that was not as bad off as the window area and requested an estimate for both. It took a few weeks to schedule the work as it was the height of summer, and L&R stayed in touch the entire time to let me know approximately when the work would be done. The project involved a bit of engineering and a lot of heavy labor. The work was done timely and neatly. The result was professional and is still performing as it should. I would have them back.

The project itself did not take long, less than 2 weeks. The only problems we had were getting the ccompany there to do the work. We agreed to go-ahead with the project in late summer 2009, their comment at that time was that our project would be done in the fall of that year. That didn't happen and the project was rescheduled for the following year (2010).The summer of 2010 arrived, but L & R didn't. We proded them for a date when the project would start without much success, finally in August they arrived and completed the project in 4 days. We are very pleased with the outcome, just disappointed with the length of time it took to get to the project completed. COMMENT: Our project was small, i.e.4 days,, y impression is that larger projects received more priority in the eyes of L & R and were given more priority for completion.

We appreciate receiving the positive customer review, but would like to add a few details. In checking our records we were not contracted in 2009 or 2010 to perform any work for this customer name. Perhaps another company was involved prior to the customer actually contacting us. The first estimate appointment we had with the customer was Wed, 5/4/11, after which a design review appointment was scheduled for 5/19/11. The customer then contracted with us by signing a proposal agreement on 5/27/11 to have the work completed. Normally it is 2-3 weeks from the time of signing for the actual installation to occur. Unfortunately, in May 2011 we did have 10 rain days with heavy thunderstorms that impacted our schedule. This continued into June 2011 with another 5 rain days and July with another 6 days. The installation calendar was seriously impacted for those 3 months for all of our customers regardless of project size because of the ongoing rain and heavy thunderstorms. The project installation was completed in August 2011.

We would have loved to use them if we were able to go forward with it. He was really clear in describing what they could do for us and help us on what we wanted or what we would need to do to try to get the results we wanted which was helpful. He had really good information. He was very professional and nice to work with.
Description of Work: We did get an estimate from L & R Suburban Landscaping for a major landscaping project in our backyard and decided that we were not going to go forward with the project. They were supposed to be bringing in a lot of dirt and leveling of one part of our backyard and building a retaining wall.

They did a great job! So helpful in coming up with ideas that fulfilled our vague ideas for decorative brick wall in front and back. Their staff was very courteous and prompt, they did the work requested in the timeframe they said they would, for the cost we agreed upon. Excellent work, pleasant people, we really appreciated their service.
Description of Work: Installed decorative brick retaining wall in front of landscaping at the front of the house, plus small decorative brick retaining walled-off area in the backyard.

We had some issues with other contractors. We hired L & R to finish the project for us. They were great to work with. They got it done and got it done professionally. It was expensive but I'm happy when I get what I pay for.
Description of Work: We had a porch foundation that needed to be redone.

The job was well-done!!! They did everything we ask for, and as they promised in the beginning. When they were building the stairway, they encountered large tree trunks under the ground. In order not to hurt the large tree, they escavated the ground around the tree. This must have taken them 3 more days of work. Ron was the owner and engineer. He is brilliant. His wife, Dawn, helped us select the stones, lighting, and the mailbox. She is friendly, extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We are very pleased with the work they did.
Description of Work: We decided in July this year to redo landscaping of our house. We interviewed two landscapers......one is well-known in the city, and the other is L&R Suburban Landscaping. L&R's design was excellent and well-suited for our taste. This includes installing 3 drain tiles in front and rear of the house, building a stone stairway and a walkway from the front entrance, a paver driveway, a waterfall, a stone mailbox, re-do irrigation system, remove two well-grown trees and replace them with birch trees, re-route air-conditioner hose, and miscellaneous landscaping needs.
