I called them to come out and do a cleaning/check up on the 2 wood burning stoves that I purchased from them in 2005. The man I spoke to said Paul would call me back to arrange a time. I asked how much for the cleaning and he said: $177.00 for each! I gasped and said: "that seems like a lot!" He responded with: "Maybe with 2 Paul will give you a deal on the second one." 3 days later Paul called to schedule a time to come and do the work. I asked him about the price and he said "$177.00 each." I asked if he would do a reduced rate on the second one." He shot back with "Look it is usually $217.00 each," and he was laughing. I was very surprised by his attitude- especially these days when the economy is so bad. I then went to Angies List and found a company that is coming out for $129.00 for 1 stove and if the other needs clean up it would be $109.00(!) I will no longer recommend Woodland Stoves to anyone!
Description of Work: I called to arrange check up/and cleaning for 2 wood burning stoves I purchased from them. I did not use them because of the outrageous pricing and Paul's attitude about the pricing! What a disappointment.

Overall, everything went well. The fireplace is in place and working perfectly. The installation is clean and neat. We're very happy with the product and service. One of their workers was injured, unrelated to our work, and this seemed to slow things down and perhaps led to some redundant visits and communication during the scheduling. This never caused problems.
Description of Work: We bought the fireplace from Woodland's showroom. We had someone else build a hearth. Woodland recommended a contractor for the gas line work. We used this contractor and he was fantastic. Woodland installed the fireplace in one day without any problems.

We really wanted to buy a gas insert fireplace from Woodland, but their customer service is terrible. After our visit to their store, they said they would call within a week to schedule an estimate. A week went by and they never called, so we called them. Finally got an appt scheduled for a couple more weeks out. The guy who came was nice, but said our existing fireplace was too small for their insert. He said they had a mason they worked with and he'd talk to the mason about adjusting our opening to fit. He said he'd call us back, but never did. Several (6-8) weeks later, another person from Woodland emailed us apologizing that no one ever came to give us an estimate! We emailed back and told him that someone had come, but then never followed up like they said they would. Once again we got no response. We have finally given up trying to work with them.
Description of Work: Ended up with only an estimate, because of their complete lack of follow through. Really wish it had worked out.

I visited them, and they came out to me as well. It seemed like an independent shop. They were easy to schedule out. I did not buy anything from them, but I interacted with them, and they were very helpful. They knew their product; I thought they were probably more knowledgeable than the other providers I talked to. They gave me a quote and also told me what they could do. Their estimated price was $4000. I liked them, but I just ended up getting it elsewhere. I would consider using them again.

We have an old house that did not have a working fireplace. They found several problems making it an especially difficult installation. They were great - they persisted and found solutions to our unique situation. They always came on time and all the installers were very skilled and professional. We love the fireplace and Woodland was great to work with - don't know if any other company could have figured out how to do the installation.

Paul came and measured the opening and provided a proposal quickly. Between the time I chose the doors and Paul came to do the measurement was quite a long time -- over two weeks, I think. He was supposed to call me to schedule a measurement appointment, but after two weeks, I called him. After providing me with a quote, I waited awhile to respond, and when I did, Paul told me the quote was incorrect and was actually $2,000 less than he originally quoted because he priced the wrong doors. We scheduled a day and time for him to come install the doors, and Paul arrived on time, installed the doors quickly and efficiently and left no mess. I would definitely work with Woodland again, but I would be more diligent about making sure I am given the correct pricing information.

We are very disappointed with Woodland. They installed our fireplace insert in 2007 and serviced it in 2008, and we were very pleased. We called again for service in mid-June of this year. We missed their scheduling call the following week, but called the scheduler back the next day, called the store again the following week and also at the end of July. Each time we were told someone would get back to us. As of mid-September we still have not heard from them. Obviously we were in no hurry to have the work done in June or July, and there may be a good reason why they have been unable to schedule the service. Lacking any communication from them, though, we can only assume that customer service is no longer a priority and that our business is not important to them. We were happy to recommend them in the past; we can no longer do so.

They are very professional, came and did everything very quickly and efficiently. From all of our research they are the Twin Cities' top experts on wood burning fireplaces. I highly recommend them for wood burning advice and service. They are not cheap, but they are the best and we could not find anyone else that could even come close to their experience (it was hard to find apples to apples price comparison, as there are not many who do wood burning anymore - most are gas only). Why risk something this big with a company that is not the best? The fireplace puts out A LOT of heat! We can easily heat our entire house with the fireplace (since we had them install the fan to route heat from the fireplace to the furnace ducting). One big load of firewood (depending on type of wood) will last 10 - 12 hours. If you just do one load and let it go out, the fireplace will still be warm 24 hours later!
Description of Work: Parts and installation for: High efficiency wood burning stove, exhaust ducting, intake ducting, heat connection to the plenum, inline fan, etc. We chose to do our own wiring of the thermostat and controls. I don't think they do the electrical for the fans. The model we chose was the Opel 2, here is a link: http://www.woodlandstoves.com/WoodFireplaces_2.html

We selected Woodland after visiting several fireplace shops. We have a Victorian home with a very small fireplace surrounded by beautiful original tiling. At the other shops, they suggested we knock out the tile to make a larger opening (HORROR!). Finally, we found a company online that made small inserts that look like burning coal (Valor) and their local supplier is Woodland. An initial in home consult was done for the estimate. Then the stove was ordered and was partially installed. It was missing some parts and took a while for them to arrive. Then, they had to custom make a metal surround to complete the install. The installers told me the surround would have to cover some of the tiling - but in the end - they found a way to fit the metal plates inside and it looks GORGEOUS. Final thoughts - not the most prompt or the most friendly - but a unique product and fantastic work.

Continued from services performed section: The quote from ServPro was $3,540 and from COIT was $2500. On Weds, we contacted our insurance co.(American Family Ins) and arranged for an adjuster to come and see the damage. On Thurs, we contacted Peter and told him the quote prices from both ServPro and COIT and he said that the quotes were too high (It needs to be noted that at this point in time, no one from Woodland had been to our house since the install to see the mess). Our Insurance adjuster came Thursday evening to get our insurance claim started. On Fri, we received a voicemail from Peter saying that a woman named Kari would be coming to our house on Monday the 29th to clean it. We called Woodland and asked who Kari is and if we could have her phone number to speak to her about her qualifications. Mike provided her number and also said that he wanted to stop by the house that evening to take pictures for their insurance. In speaking with Kari, she stated that her qualifications for being able to clean our home were 30 yrs of being a house cleaner. She became acquainted with Woodland as they caused a similar mess in her home. We learned that Kari was not licensed, bonded or insured. Upon, hearing this, we told her that we would not allow her to clean our house. When Mike stopped by to take pictures, he said that in the 8 yrs of working at Woodland he had never had a house left in the mess ours was. On Sat, we received a call from Peter saying that they would hire a construction cleaning crew to clean our house. We asked Peter who this company was and what do they do? Peter said that they clean up after construction and remodel projects. We then asked if they had experience with soot damage and cleaning drapes and rugs. Peter’s response to the question was that $1000 was too much for cleaning the drapes and rugs. We then asked Peter if he knew how much cost to clean drapes and rugs and his response was, ”no, but it can’t be that much.” At that point, we then told Peter that we had filed a claim with our insurance company and we would make arrangements to get our house cleaned through them. So, to get the house cleaned, we are out our $1000 deductible. Our insurance co. said that they would go into subrogation with Woodlands insurance co. and hopefully we would receive some if not all of our deductible back. Service Master cleaned the house and Vans Upholstery cleaned all of the soft products (drapes, rugs, etc.). The final bill for the work done was $4892.80. During this process, emails sent directly to Peter were never replied to, and any conversation with him proved futile, as he was not willing to listen to our complaints and certainly wasn't going to take the blame for the damage done to our home. We would never recommend Woodland Stoves and Fireplaces to anyone.
Description of Work: We hired Woodland Stoves and Fireplaces to install a gas insert into our existing wood fireplace. The install occured on 2/22/2010. The price of $4000.00 for the gas insert and installation was reasonable compared to other companies doing similar work. The fireplace insert so far is operating as expected. However, the issue we have with Woodland is the mess they left our house in after the install. We were left with soot damage in all but one of the rooms on our main floor. There was also soot damage in the theater in the basement and there was cement dust all over every surface in the rest of the basement. We had to file a claim through our insurance company in order to get it cleaned. The total cleaning cost was just under $5000.00 of which $1000.00 was our deductible. Thus, our total out of pocket cost was $5000.00. We have since learned from our insurance company that Woodland is self insured and is claiming no liability for the damage caused. Since they do not belong to an arbitration company our insurance company is unable to take them to arbitration court. Our Insurance Company has since hired a law firm to try and recoup their loss and our deductible. It was evident to us that Woodland wasn't willing to work with us, and that they certainly didn't want to have to file and insurance claim since they are self insured. That is why we went ahead and filed the insurance claim and found other cleaning services to clean our home. Here are the details: On Mon, February 22, 2010, Woodland Stoves and Fireplaces of Minneapolis came to our house to install a gas insert in our wood fireplace. When we arrived home that day, we realized that our house had soot dust seemingly everywhere on the first level. There was also a mess in the basement as there was cement dust on all of the surfaces. We called our sales rep, Mike, from Woodland and asked him if we should have expected a mess and he said “no.” He said that when the install crew removed the old flue of the fireplace, soot fell out and created a dust cloud. We had already informed both Mike and the owner, Peter, that we had never used the fireplace or opened the flue in the 18 years that we have lived in the house. The dust in the basement was caused by them drilling into the cement foundation of the fireplace for the gas line. On Tues, we spoke to Peter and explained the mess to him and that we had called ServPro to get an estimate for cleaning. He recommended COIT. He said that he would get the mess cleaned up for us but wanted to avoid submitting an insurance claim. We contacted COIT as well.

All went well. They were booked a few weeks out, but they came right on schedule. The installation took one day, without problems. They showed us how to condition and operate the wood-burning insert. They have provided additional advice as we have learned to use it. We chose the Vermont Castings Montpelier model because it has a nice large window and allows a very good view of the fire. It has the drawback, as warned by Woodland, that the large window will get easily coated by soot. However, with some preventive maintenance and cleaning before each fire, I feel that issue is reduced to an acceptable level. I was unsure how to rate the price since we did not do much comparison shopping, except by reviewing Angies List reports. We have been enjoying the insert.
Description of Work: Install a wood-burning insert (Vermont Castings Montpelier) into our existing fireplace. Install chimney liner and cap. Install make-up air vent in basement. I did some electrical wiring and an extension of the fireplace hearth tile myself to save money.

The salesman was very rude and would only state that an insert would improve the efficiency but refused to further explain what an insert is and how it works. He basically said that inserts are expensive and then blew me off. I am a female and have a young sounding voice. We received excellent information from these guys. They are very knowledgeable about their products and what the issues are on rarer styles of fireplace (we have a turn-of-the-century coal-burning fireplace with a small facade and 45+ foot chimney). Overall, a fantastic experience on the front end...we were very excited to work with them. We were ready to go with these guys, but they never followed up on the sale. We tried to set up an in-house consult to measure and get everything going, but the first one was a no-show. They are a very popular place and get pretty busy during the Summer sales time, but I'm not quite sure why they didn't put in the effort to close a sale that would have been worth $3200+ to them.

This project went well from start to finish with only one minor glitch. The showroom was crowded the day we visited - we were promptly acknowledged and attended to as soon as a sales person was free. Lisa gave us lots of helpful information and did a good job of listening to our concerns - to the point of changing her recommendation based on a comment we made about her initial recommendation. Mike, who came out to measure and prepare the final estimate, was on time, friendly and informative. John and Tom came out to install as scheduled, and were friendly, informative, efficient, and cleaned up completely. The also recommended a slight modification that resulted in a better overall look. The only minor problem was the electrical sub-contractor who made several holes in the wrong side of the fireplace foundation before finding the shaft into which he was supposed to drill. He also made no effort to clean up the work area, leaving concrete dust all over the floor.

Salesperson who showed us stoves was very knowledgeable about different types of stoves, recommended size appropriate for the space, told us which stoves could include a screen. Person who came to measure space was prompt and friendly, and explained the pros and cons of our chosen location. Explained how location would affect necessary height of chimney pipe and gave us some tips on getting fires started under certain conditions. Scheduled installation for us while he was there, e-mailed estimates within a couple of days. Installation crew (of two) arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule, looked at space, and explained what they would do. They brought covering for floors and furniture, removed their shoes, and were conscientious about avoiding fragile edge of hearth. When I arrived home from work, the wood-stove was ready to use, with a small packet of starter material. They left the room extremely clean. Also gave us the name of a city inspector to call for insurance purposes.
