Everyone on this project was amazing to work with--very accommodating of my unconventional design plan and building materials (vintage salvaged woodwork, a 15 foot long built-in bookshelf that had to be disassembled and brought in through a window, etc.) and very respectful of me, my space, and my life during the 6 weeks of work. The project turned out exactly as I had imagined it, on time and on budget, and the quality of the work was flawless. Not only were all of White Crane's employees genuinely nice, considerate, and reliable, but so were all of the subcontractors that they hired. They made every effort to keep the space they were working in and the rest of my house clean (using zip walls to contain dust; sweeping, vacuuming, and putting tools and materials away daily; never smoking on or even near my property) and were always quiet and polite both in their conversations with me and in their interactions with each other and with subcontractors. The project manager was very good at communicating with me about how the project was progressing and about upcoming events and made it clear that I could contact him at any time about anything; and, although I rarely took him up on it out of respect for his non-work life, he always responded immediately when I emailed or called him on evenings or weekends. Throughout the project, workers always showed up when they said they would and there was never a single day when work wasn't being done. Working in older homes is almost always frustrating and especially so when the homeowner wants you to use salvaged and unconventional materials, but everyone on the project bore it with grace and reacted productively rather than dramatically to frustrating developments. The carpentry was all executed really well and the mechanical overhauls went quickly and smoothly. The original estimate was accurate (barring a minor change order or two that were all my doing) and--AMAZINGLY--they stuck to the 6-week schedule despite unforeseen complications. Overall, the basement looks perfect and the experience getting there was a great one!
Description of Work: White Crane handled the complete remodel of the 900 sq. ft. basement in my 1925 craftsman bungalow, including reframing walls; updating plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems; building custom built-ins; installing new bathroom; and finishing with antique millwork and built-ins.
I typed this 3 times already and your web site deleted it along with the paragraphs above. The short version is it all went well, but like sausage you shouldn't watch it being made. I had reservations about doing the work over the Minnesota winter and to some degree it was a challenge, but in the end we were pretty much on time and on budget. I did have a few change orders which mostly involved adding back some features we had canceled due to the original effort to manage the costs to a budget.
Description of Work: White Crane designed a 2nd story addition to go above a single story room behind our house. The addition lines up with our master bedroom closets. We broke through the closets to the outside wall and added a 14 x 18 foot addition to have a walk through closet and sitting room/office space with windows on 3 sides to match the library downstairs. They matched the dental trim and type of cedar siding as well. The old siding due to weathering was several shades of gray so a random gray stain was selected (by me). Security lights outside, lots of outlets, cable ethernet and telephone were cabled into the office area. After removing the roof of the first floor we had the 3 double windows replaced downstairs as well. We had hoped to save the weathered cedar siding, but it all fragmented during demolition efforts in the dry cold month of January. The bid included the potential replacement of the siding, so it did not add to the cost, but did alter the final appearance. The old master bath and the closet spaces were converted to a larger bathroom with a double walk in shower with bench and tile and glass walls. A separate toilet room was built and the double vanity moved a foot to the south. New ceiling, insulation and lighting added in the bathroom and dressing area to match the new addition. They made the excellent suggestion of in floor heating for the tile flooring. We were a month ahead of schedule until it came time to do the closet. The carpet was backordered and the closet fixtures were mis-measured by the subcontractor. Zoe and Paul made sure that the closet was made right at no cost to us and after the carpet was installed we were pretty much back on schedule. Paul built new bookshelves in the first floor library to enclose the heating and cooling ducts run up to the 2nd floor. The first floor was returned to better than new condition. They took care to protect the carpet on the stairs and as best they could protect us from the January weather while building onto an open wall and roof. At the end they cleaned up the mess inside and out. We had the electrical service replaced with a 200 amp expanded box to better distribute the load and supply a 220 v circuit for the porch heater. Other than leaving for a warm vacation during the first demolition week, we lived in the house, sleeping downstairs during the project. We also had our screen porch redone to a three season with electric heat. They facilitated that, but most of the work was done by another contractor.
We had a terrific experience with White Crane. Susan and her team were very patient with us and explained the process; this was especially helpful since we had not done a big remodeling project before. We initially contracted just for a design phase, and then decided later to move forward with the remodeling. White Crane provided good coordination and a detailed schedule. The team stuck to it quite well, even when we had a couple of design changes mid-stream. Their subcontractors were great - one even spent time with us in the lighting store to pick out fixtures - and very responsive. We were impressed with how well they cleaned up at the end of each day. Overall, a great experience!
Description of Work: White Crane remodeled our entire basement, from demolition through finishing. They provided a design for the space, moved some existing walls, built new ones, moved some mechanicals, installed an egress window, and expanded the bathroom. This space serves many functions - office, TV room, playroom, guest space - and White Crane helped us make some design choices to accommodate all those needs.

We emailed White Crane with an explanation of the rooms we wanted built in our basement and what our budget was. We wanted a family room built, and a laundry room & bathroom roughed in. They called us and were concerned about our budget, which was $20,000. The front office was polite and respectful when they explained that their typical basement remodels started at over $40,000 and they would not be a good fit for us. I was pleased that they contacted us and did not simply ignore our inquiry, even though it was clear we were not their target customer.
Description of Work: We were shopping around for a general contractor to finish our basement. We talked with, but did not hire, White Crane.

IN OUR DESIGN/BUILD PROCESS WE WORK CLOSELY WITH OUR CLIENTS TO MATCH BUDGET TO SCOPE REGARDLESS IF THE SPECIFIED PROJECT IS MODEST OR HIGH END. THE FUNDAMENTAL KEY IS A REALISTIC BUDGET MATCHED WITH DESIGN/BUILD SCOPE OF WORK.

We already had a fairly good idea of what we wanted, so their help in the design was somewhat minimal, but they contributed good ideas, and helped us make decisions. During construction WC did a good job of overseeing the subs, and our lead carpenter Jeff, was great. Overall the project has gone well, and we are very pleased with the end result. Overall thoughts: - You will learn the words "change order". So the more detailed you are at the beginning the better. If something is not in the plans or the contract, then it will be a change order. - We were able to avoid several problems by paying attention and noticing things before they became big problems. - WC will not be the lowest bidder on most projects, but for us the extra money was worth it for the professionalism and quality we got in return. - All of the WC staff we worked with seemed to genuinely care about doing a good job. We are fairly detail-oriented, and almost everything was done correctly the first time.
Description of Work: Design and construction. Complete kitchen remodel and new four season great room addition with fireplace. Also new full basement space underneath. Wanted to make the new space feel complimentary and part of the existing 1920's bungalow style. We wanted to hire a company that would do the "whole project", from design to construction. We also had decided we were willing to spend a little more money if we were able to get a company that would make it worth it.

It was just great! This is the first remodel we've ever done and we were so fortunate to work with such a great contractor on our first time out. They were very reasonable and organized up front; they honored the aesthetic of our 1926 house, including a masterful job of restoring some original kitchen cabinetry; they got the job done on time and reasonably on budget, keeping us informed of any change orders. Staff was all very friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. They also were very responsive in dealing with any bumps that arose with subcontractors along the way. We did come with a fair amount of thinking as to what we wanted, so this probably helped to keep the design process as efficient as possible. We work from home in an upstairs office, so this was ideal -- we could be home to answer questions but stay out of the way while the team worked. It's been about a year now and we are still absolutely thrilled with the work they did.
Description of Work: White Crane helped us add a 1-story addition to double the size of our kitchen and remodel our one bathroom. They helped us with design and handled the entire construction and finishing process. The project from design to completion was about nine months, from July 2006 to March 2007.

I really liked the work that they did. It matched the existing pergola exactly. They came in and gave us a bid and did the work on a schedule that we agreed on. They were very respectful of our property and our neighbors property. We are currently having them work on the interior of our garage.

We got estimates for this job from several local contractors but settled on White Crane because they gave us straightforward opinions about what would and would not work in our budget and design ideas. Zoe Kardasis (designer and marketing rep) always gave options on furnishings that would line up with with our vision and was available for questions any time. The demolition was quick and painless and the crew cleaned up really well. The head carpenter, Jeff Nelson, was prompt, reliable and was never overwhelmed when hit with the many obstacles that come when dealing with an older home such as wavy walls and floors or shoddy construction from previous remodeling work. The job took about 2 months in all but we are completely satisfied with the new bathroom and on this frigid winter day, that steam shower feels mighty good.
Description of Work: Demolished and remodeled master bath in 125 year old home. Job included installation of steam shower and heated floor.

Company representative was polite during all phone conversations, and returned calls within 24 hours typically. Requested to have an estimate of a complete bathroom remodel. Wanted to set up appointment for estimate, but company refused to come out, see our bath, and provide an estimate because our budget (reasonable with other remodelers) was below their minimum master bathroom budget guidelines.

Excellent! We are extremely pleased with the entire process and results. Susan and Zoe met with us more than once to discuss our vision. They gave us suggestions and they were extremely patient with us as we made several idea changes prior to signing a contract with them. They assigned us a Master carpenter. Peter who is outstanding and Mike as our point of contact. We knew re-molding could be time consuming, messy and frustrating but we could not have had a better experience. The home was clean and orderly every evening and in the end they made sure any flaws were identified and corrected. We highly recommend White Crane Construction!

Company refused to provide estimate for bathroom remodel job. Company representative was polite and returned calls.
Susan (owner) told us ''We want to be your contractor for life.'' After this project, they will be. We had heard so many horror stories about major renovations that we were nervous about the process. We hit the jackpot by selecting White Crane. There is not enough space to fully explain how impressed we were with everything! 1) Listened & understood what we wanted during design. 2) Communication was unparalleled & we always knew what was next and when. No financial surprises. 3) So clean that we walked through our gutted kitchen in bare feet (although some subcontractors weren't as clean but still adequate). 4) Outstanding attention to detail - treated our house as their own. 5) Anything that was the slightest bit off or wrong was redone or fixed to be better than ever. 6) Our lead carpenter, Jeff, was amazing and we couldn't have asked for a better project lead. 7) Were accommodating to our cat and 2 dogs! Overall, we are very satisfied and HIGHLY recommend them!
Description of Work: We undertook a complete renovation of our kitchen. We worked with White Crane to develop a design for the project and then we proceeded with the construction. White Crane then completely gutted our ''old'' kitchen and proceeded to: perform a major electrical upgrade, revise the plumbing, install new hardwood floor to match the adjacent room, install new custom cabinets, a granite countertop, a ceramic tile backsplash, seal one door (of three) and open up one wall. Also replaced carpet by rear entry with ceramic tile and performed minor stucco patching after installing a new window. All wood stained and walls painted.

Susan Denk, the company's owner, met with us to discuss our vision and our price-point. She was ideal to work with as she is a good listener, realistic about price, and she makes you feel that your project is their top priority. She understood what we wanted (a basement to match the rest of our 1913 home) and really delivered it. Mike (who did the gut, the framing, and all the odds and ends) was ideal. He is a perfectionist and treats your home like it is his. You will not be disappointed! The subs they used for plumbing/flooring/painting/eclectic were overall good. If there were ever problems, Susan would contact them immediately and handle it professionally. While the money we spent may seem high, White Crane made every effort to tell you how much things were, where it was going, including the inevitable upgrades along the way. Between Susan and Mike, I felt like everything was under control. This is a good group of people.
Description of Work: We had our unfinished basement in our 1913 home turned into a family room, laundry/work-out room, and a bathroom. White Crane acted as our general contractor.

After reading the reviews, I was very disappointed in the customer relations. I found Susan to be rather difficult to communicate with and she seemed somewhat inflexible. She asked many prying questions like how many other bids we were planning on getting. Also, after I told her that we had final drawings, she stated that she would only give us a range on an initial estimate and that she would not price out the project completely without a cash down payment from us. Totally disappointing!!
