eWe needed to get our 1930s South Minneapolis Tudor ready to put on the market. Jeanne Eaton helped us get our last house ready to sell and did a lot of tile and installation work on this house seven years ago when we bought it, so we called her right away. We've known Jeanne for a long time and she's one of the few people I truly trust to be in my home when I'm away and to make sure the cats don't get outside, etc. She has meticulous attention to detail and is only happy when the job is done perfectly. Jeanne came by and gave us an estimate and was able to start work later that same week. She did a particularly amazing job with making and installing all the quarter round in the kitchen and back door hallway (we had removed the linoleum floor to sand and refinish the wood floor beneath, but now there was a gap and we needed wood thresholds to match and we couldn't do this part ourselves.) She made new quarter round where needed and new thresholds, all to match the original cabinets and complement the floor. We added in building a shelf "bar" in the kitchen when I could not find a precut shelf to match and Jeanne made one and mounted it. And as great as she is at woodworking, her specialty is tile. She regrouted the large walk-in master bath shower to look like new. Jeanne even worked on the weekend to help us get the house on the market on time. We sold our house at our asking price in five days, thanks in part to Jeanne's excellent work.
Description of Work: - built bar/shelf in breakfast nook - painted stairs to master bedroom - Painted front door - Regrouted tile in master bath shower - Cut, stained to match and installed trim and new thresholds for the kitchen and back entry, right down to "distressing" a to match existing 1930s vintage look and making a sliding bit of trim for the bottom drawer of our dishwasher!

I am remodeling my 1920's kitchen and adding powder and mudrooms. Working with Jeanne is a top 10 worse experience in my life. #1. A subcontractor constructed the frame in 2 weeks the 1st part of Jan, 2010. After Jeanne disappeared for a month with no communication. *She had another job to do. #2. Jeanne decided to put the flat roof of the addition on herself. She took a CLASS to learn how. I hired a professional not someone to fund their education. At the end, I lived with plastic tarp roof for 4 months and she never did install the roof - she doesn't know how (she was sanding my hardwood kitchen floors and before the roof). #3. General Project Management - I asked for weekly status reports through email. Jeanne?s Project Management skills are amateur, at best. She doesn?t know how to use email effectively and couldn't do it. It was apparent she didn't want to. #4. My cat, near death experience. I have an indoor cat (never outside) when she started. Luckily, I still have a cat now. All the subs knew I had a cat and apparently he got out frequently because her negligence on keeping the addition doors/windows wide open and the doors to the work area closed. A majority of homeowners have animals and special care needs to be taken. The last straw: She actually locked the cat outside after the work day, I came home late from a business trip and the cat was being attacked by a dog. My cat was trying to jump into the window or door, which must have been open at one time. Only by luck did I save my cat from being lost and death. #5. She quit On Friday April 9th, she took the permit, lockbox, tools, returned my key. She didn?t leave a notice (VM/email/letter etc.). She walked off the property. Only after three days and my calls to the subs did she email me about coming back to work. #6. Problems with the building itself a. Door installed incorrectly. b. Cabinet measurements incorrect causing rework c. General Addition problems a. Missing Joint hangers in the roof b. Missing Drywall backer board. I could go on, but I hope I got my point across. She is unprofessional, sloppy, slow and not someone who should be hired!

Response from Vintage Home Repair
(deleted member name) and I had worked on projects at his house since 2004 when we worked on his bath. We also upgraded his electrical system and had done miscelanious carpentry projects as well. I was a known quantity to (deleted member name) who was aware of my working style and the quality of my work. We had been in discussion about his kitchen project and has worked out the interior design which he paid for seperatly. Like many people during the economic collapse he lost his home equity loan-or so he told me. He asked if we could extent out the project so we could start but he could continue to earn the money and I agreed to write a contract that would reflect that. In order to get a earlier start in the spring we had to get the project started before the coldest part of winter as the small mudroom had a foundation. I interrupted a window job to get that part of (deleted member name) project started. I did not disappear for a month I went back to the job I was on. (deleted member name) knew this was how the project was to work as that was what he asked for. As to his other comments--- 1) Framing or other elements can go quickly making other aspects of the job seem slow. When you wash dishes doing a few pots and pans can make it appear you have made great progress. 2) I take classes all the time and yes you as a consumer do fund them as well as other aspects of my business, insurance etc. I have do date installed four walk in showers with membrane waterproofing and wanted to see if a roofing membrane over asphalt role material would be my choice for this job. Putting a small flat roof on is well withing the scope of work I do. Weather I did this part of the job or subcontracted it I wanted to be fully informed as to my decision. It is what all good contractors do. Furthermore we had not contractually agreed to the time frame that the roof would happen as the contract was written so he get the funding in place first and he had not paid me to start this part of our project. 3) I have numerious emails from (deleted member name) so I don't know what his issue is here, and again we had a working history with no incidents. 4) Early on (deleted member name) was notified that the cat was chewing through a heavy plastic barrior to get to the work zone and had gotten outside. He had been notified of that and had taken no action. I am always mindful of peoples pets and during the early phase of this job where a backhoe torn off the old mudroom I would take the cat a litterbox and food and water dishes up to a room where he could stay locked away but this was not in the contract and was time consuming so couldn't continue throughout the project. I never knew the cat was out during the "dog event". 5)After a particularily harassing behavior in which he inplyed he might fire me I suggested we could end our relationship, and since his behavior was so out of character I was not willing to risk having my tools locked up so took all but a few with me until we could sort out what was going on in our working relationship. With our contractal obligations it made no sense to remain vulnerable to what could be made up, ie stolen property etc. when the trust between contractor and client is broken no satisfactory end is likely. Of course the permit left with me I am legally vulerable as the contractor who pulled the permit. I had other jobs scheduled that year and was willing to move on. At the point where we ended this job I had consulted a lawyer as to the proper way to terminate a contract and had written the termination agreement. Although I had no obligation to do so I also provided (deleted member name) with a detailed list of receipts and my time involved to that point. Other comments) Cabinet drawings mismeasured? If you terminate your contract you have to handle such things, if I had made the mistake I would have had to take the loss-assuming it is true. I will never know why after many jobs together why (deleted member name) behaved so differently. Was one of the many medicine bottles on his bathroom windowsill Ambian or another mood altering medication? Bad breakup with his boyfriend? Stress at work? Desire to get something for nothing-neither I or any contractor could know- its why we have increasing longer and longer contracts.
