I signed a contract with Shelter Construction LLC, for stone coated steel roofing on 10/09/2018. Construction would begin in November, if not, could be done any time in the winter. I was told in November that the roofing would not be done until the spring of 2019. I asked about the insurance check sitting in their account collecting interest, was told that it was needed to guarantee the price of the materials for the upcoming year. In March, I was contacted by Matt Godin, Project Superintendent, that the material I picked out was not that great of quality and suggested that I go with CertainTeed Steel Roofing, a product of theirs called Matterhorn. There were no other options given to me. I know nothing about roofing so thought that it was this or nothing. So I chose a color, and a change order was signed. Shelter had their subcontractor start the job in April. Right away, I knew there was something wrong. The lines were going at an angle and the sheets were lifted. I contacted Matt, who came out and looked at the project. He contacted CertainTeed and was told that their subcontractor was not supposed to go over the existing roof, plus they were laying the sheets wrong. Instead of side to side, it was supposed to be installed up and down. All of the new roofing had to be taken off and a complete tear off done. They ordered new material and CertainTeed sent out one of their reps to show them the correct way to install it. They started the project once again, and I was asked by Matt if I wanted rolled trim to match our roofing selection, which is Spanish style, or I could choose a flat trim. He had no pictures to show me, but said that the rolled trim would compliment the style. I assumed that he knew what he was talking about, as he is the professional. One day while working on the gable end trim, one of the subcontractors employees yelled down to my girlfriend and myself asking if he was nailing it correctly. I was a little surprised and asked Matt about it later on. He said not to worry, it'll look great. The day they 'finished' the job, they said they were ready to go. My GF and I walked around the back of the house to look at the trim. She said, when are you going to finish this? Matt said that it was done. What? No, it looks awful. The trim wasn't straight, some pieces hung lower then others. The back side of the trim was open with visible nails hanging down, not attached to anything. Matt responded that this is what we wanted, rolled edging. I said that it was unprofessional, even the workers agreed with me. The peaks did not line up and the front corner of the house was left undone. When asked about that, Matt responded that he would have a metal fabricator figure something out. As for the trim, he'd have to give it some thought. He had the corner fabricated and came to install it one day, but I told him to wait because of the trim issue. Plus, I found numerous dents in the roof, made by the workers. Not a few small ones, we're talking large noticible dents. I was told by Matt that the only reason I noticed them is because it's new...after awhile, I won't notice them anymore. !! At that point, my girlfriend contacted CertainTeed directly, was given the email of Matt Bartels, Minnesota Territory Rep, and asked for his help to give direction to our contractor. Matt B. said that he would contact Shelter and speak with them. Meanwhile, Matt G. came out and looked over the dents again. I asked him about the meeting with CertainTeed. He admitted that Matt B. told their CEO when talking about the issues, “Would you buy a Cadillac with dents in it?”. Given the amount of money that this roof costs, a person expects it to look perfect, something that no one else has, a dream roof! I was told when I signed the contract last year that the only way the roof would dent, is by 2” or larger hail. Matt G. eventually got back to us and said that he was ordering a dent puller to see if that would work to remove the dents. We told him that he could try it, hopefully it will work as any dents are unacceptable. He finally received the dent puller and said that he has to practice with it first. After a few weeks, my girlfriend contacted him on when we could expect him to come out to see if this will work or not. Here is his response on August 30th: “Good afternoon, I will schedule a day to come out and work on the roof as soon as we have yourself and Curt sign this letter and email it back over to me.” Here is what the letter says:”Shelter Construction LLC confirms the following obligations as a part of our contract for repair work covered by our contract with you, initiated on 10/9/2018. 1. Shelter Construction LLC will complete the following work elements to finalize this project: a. replace roof edge with custom bent fascia b. wood puddy and sand screw holes c. remove dents in steel panel visible from the ground and at the time of repair to the best of our ability Based on our investigation and discussions with manufacturer and metal specialists, the denting you identified on your metal roofing product, while a characteristic of this product in particular and metal roofs in general, in no way impacts the performance, lifespan, or warranty of the product. However, we understand your dissatisfaction with the appearance. As a solution, Matt Godin, our Production Manager, will be attempting to remove the identified dents using dent-removal equipment and standard processes. We agree to perform this as a one-time solution to this cosmetic issue. You agree to hold Shelter Construction LLC harmless in the event that additional cosmetic damage results from the performance of these spot-corrections. This agreement is contingent upon both your signatures. Signed Karin Nord Martinek, Chief Operations Officer” Obviously, we are not signing this... Shelter knowingly hired a subcontractor that had no knowledge of the product. Numerous mistakes were made. Unfortunately, this material cannot be replaced in sections if the dent puller does not work. Shelter knows this and is trying to convince us that this is normal for a new steel roof to look this way. It can only be fixed by removing the whole roof. And note that the unfinished front corner of the house was not even mentioned. We have tried working with them, they say they'll get back to us on a weekly basis, they don't. Karin Nord Martinek has told us twice that she would come out and look at it, both times she was a no show. It is now September 9th, 2019, over a year since I signed my contract with this company and it's still not finished/installed correctly. VERY unhappy with Shelter and their unprofessionalism.

Had some hail and wind damage on my house. Shelter performed an inspection, worked with my insurance company, took most of the hassle out of it, and performed a very complicated project. Very satisfied with the service, quality, and expertise they provided. No BS, no up-selling, just good advice and promises kept!

Terribly. After the insurance adjuster decided we would not be getting a new roof, we couldn't get ahold of our initial contact person at the company as they didn't want the labor-intense project of replacing windows. I would not recommend this company to anyone.
Description of Work: Following a major thunderstorm in the spring of 2015, Shelter Construction sent out a storm-chasing crew to our neighborhood to assess for hail damage. We knew not to trust storm chasers, but were pretty sure that we had sustained hail damage to our house so we let them take a look. Of course, Shelter Construction found hail damage to our roof and windows. We proceeded to do business with them, as they did seem eager for the work. Once the insurance adjuster deemed there was hail damage only to the windows and not to the roof, Shelter Construction was no where to be found. We could rarely contact the person who came to our house and when we did there was always one excuse or another. We eventually that person was no longer with Shelter Construction.

Response from Shelter Construction LLC
[Removed members name], we are sorry to hear you were not able to contact us regarding your window replacement. Shelter Construction worked on many windows-only jobs related to that particular storm. We are sorry that you were inconvenienced. No excuses, you had a bad experience with someone we no longer employ for that very reason.
