Very pleasant experience and very professional. Will happily use his services in the future!
Description of Work: Employed Mark after seeing the offer for a full day of GC/handyman services for a day. Mark did a number of tasks that had accumulated around the house and ranged from readjusted doors, hanging paintings, fixing leaking faucets, and reviewing and giving us advice on additional items that will need to be addressed around the house in the future.

Mark was very punctual and professional. He assessed the main repair and went right to work on it. The walls were originally done in a fiberboard, but he was able to replace the section with drywall and patch it so one can't even tell the repair was made. He finished it much faster than I anticipated, so I was able to have him do the other repairs that we needed. Although we had not planned ahead on addressing them, he was up for the challenge for anything I threw at him. I greatly appreciate all the work he did to fix all of these little things that we just never seem to have the time to do. He did a great job cleaning up everything as well. I would highly recommend him. The quality of his craftsmanship was top notch! I also really appreciated his down-to-earth personality and approachability.
Description of Work: The main reason for our call was to fix a large wall crack on an angled bedroom wall. We also had a number of other smaller jobs including replacing part of a garage door jamb, scraping/repainting an exterior arch on the house, and patching wall holes/cracks/nail pops inside the house.

Mark got in touch promptly and provided an estimate that was clear, reasonable, and was willing to work with us to create a project that would suit our needs and stay in our budget. Our old house and back porch presented a number of tricky situations, due to the slope of the ground, the age of the house, and the historic character, and he answered all of my many many questions thoroughly and with care. He was incredibly courteous, and friendly, while being one of the hardest workers I have ever met. I have gotten more use out of my deck in the past week than I did in the past five years. Highly highly recommended.
Description of Work: We contracted Mark to design and build a new deck, install a new path to the back door, and do some hardscaping and repairs to our outdoor space.

Mark came out within a few days of my call. He gave us an estimate which seemed fair and was knowledgible about the type of work required. A few months later we decided to have the work done and Mark did not disappoint us. He installed, taped and mudded the drywall and it was very smooth, both the walls and the process. He is a great worker and a nice person. The finished product was more than satisfactory. We will use him again.

It was a great experience. Mark listened to what I said-did what I wanted done-left work that I felt I could do. Due to the complexity of the door installation, I was surprised that he was able to fix the windows AND install the gutters. He worked hard and he was efficient.
Description of Work: The $299 was for 8 hours of labor. During that 8 hours, Mark removed the 1922 house's back door and installed a new one which was not an easy task due to the age of the house and the previous workmanship in that area. Mark also installed gutters on the garage and fixed five windows on the back porch. .

Everything looks great. The drywall was prepared for paint and looked great after we painted it. The trim looks great too. In order to put a louvered door in the opening to my furnace room, Mark would have had to order expensive custom louvered doors. He came up with the idea to make the actual opening smaller with drywall to accommodate a non custom door. This saved us close to 1,000.00 and still gives us the access we need even if we ever have to replace the furnace. The end result looks better than if we would have had large louvered doors installed. I felt totally comfortable having him in my house even when I wasn't home.
Description of Work: I had trim around 3 doors replaced. I had drywall added to one wall. I had a louvered door added to a furnace room opening that didn't have a door.

He was able to recycle existing trim in order to keep the remodel invisible.
Description of Work: We bought a fixer-upper mid-century home. Our plan is to slowly transform it back to life. There are a couple of floorplan issues with the home. In one case, the opening leading to the master suite enters the bathroom rather than the bedroom. Mark successfully moved the opening so that you now enter the bedroom.

I am very happy with the result (truth be told, this is the third project I've hired Mark for). As I understand, Mark got his start flipping houses down in Tennessee. He is a very capable carpenter, but more importantly he has a lot of experience dealing with the surprises that come up once you start tearing into an old house. The drywalling, finishing, and painting were beautiful. Perhaps most impressively, he figured out how to bolt my flat screen tv to the wall in this basement family room. This was tricky because he had to go through the new drywall, past the stud cavity and into the foundation block wall to securely mount the bolts. The flatscreen weighs probably 40 or 50 lbs - way too much to simply mount to the drywall. Also, the studs were mostly 1x4 horizontal wood slats instead of modern vertical 2x4s. Anyway, it was tricky. He cut some pvc pipe to make a spacer so when you tighten the tv frame against the drywall it didn't collapse the wall into the cavity behind. He also mounted it in a way that the bolts are removable, so if I want to take the tv frame off and hang a picture there I can do that, and vice versa. Hard to explain, but it was ingenious. I highly recommend Mark Ruffner.
Description of Work: I had a basement room that had been finished some years ago by previous owners. The walls were covered in overlapping knotty pine panels that were ugly and beat up. I hired Mark to tear out the existing walls and put in new drywall. As a part of the job Mark also added some foamboard insulation behind the drywall, and dealt with some miscellaneous issues that came up along the way, like adding ceiling trim and baseboards, patching a ceiling hole cut by a plumber last year to fix a pipe, and mounting my flat screen tv on the wall.

He was really personable, knowledgeable and seemed to be pretty flexible as far as scheduling. I couldn't give him an exact time for when I wanted the work done, he mentioned he had a couple of other jobs going on but would be willing to adjust his schedule if necessary to fit us in. It was nice of him to be willing to make that offer.

When Mark came to do the initial estimate, his presentation was simple and straightforward, no bells, whistles and/or sales pitches. I described the job to him, he took measurements, asked pertinent questions and talked about materials. He e-mailed within a day with pictures of options and an estimate for the job. His price was reasonable. Mark was able to fit us in to his schedule fairly quickly. When he came to do the work he was punctual, he cleaned up thoroughly after he was done, and he did what he said he was going to do. We are very pleased with Mark's work and would hire him again!
Description of Work: Mark built steps for us for our deck. There were two sets of steps, two steps for each set, one longer set (maybe 8'?) at one side of the deck and another smaller set (2-1/2 to 3') in a corner with a window well. He also built a railing by the smaller set of steps (at our request) for safety.

It was a great experience to work with Mr. Ruffner. He was very nice, professional, and honest. I felt like I had a trusted friend working on my house. I originally wanted to have Mr. Ruffner put up a railing for my stairs. I have a little girl who will soon be crawling up and down stairs, and these stairs did not have a railing so it would have been easy for her to fall over the side. He gave me suggestion on a few types of railings, but also suggested simply raising the wall going down next to the stairs. I never had considered this idea, but loved it because it wouldn't really be changing the look of the room (it was the cheaper route, too!). I also asked Mark to make two shelves to add to our already existing bookcase. He explained all the ways he could match the stain of our bookcase, and even gave me "worst-case-scenarios" that would still be able to make the shelves and bookcases match. Once we decided on what I wanted him to do, Mark emailed me an estimate and was available to begin the next workday. I wasn't always able to be home when Mr. Ruffner was available, but he seemed to always work around my schedule. He finished the job in 4 days (a few hours each day)... and it only took that long because he had to allow time for things to dry overnight. He also cleaned up after himself and made sure not to track in dirt from the wet, rainy outside. Overall, it was a great experience to work with Mark. I like that HE was the one to do the work on my house and that he was so trustworthy. I truly felt like I had a friend working in my house... he even remembered my daughter's name! I will definitely use Mark again in the future, I feel fortunate to have had such a good experience so quickly during my first year in Minnesota.

Mark arrived when he said he would for the estimate. I'd had just the steps estimated and wasn't really happy with the professionalism of the first contractor. Mark was great. He estimated how much time it would take and the amount of materials he would use. We agreed upon a start date that got delayed because his current job added work to his list. I was okay with the delay because I had house guests and it was nice to not have to have the deck out of commission while they were here. On the morning he was to start - the hottest two June days on record -- he showed up and got right to work. It took him two days to do both things. Afterward he cleaned the area and left no trace. The sawdust from the cut lumber was gone, as were the rotten steps. The deck was level once again and the rotten support had been dug out and the footing replaced with new lumber. I think the deck is good for several more years. The estimate was right on the mark and the job was finished on time and on budget. Thanks Mark!!!
Description of Work: Mark came and looked at a set of steps that led from the house down to the deck. The steps were free standing and rotting. The deck itself was at a tilt and needed leveling.

Good guy, great work ethic. Trustworthy, I left keys with him while on vaction, timely. Overall the jobs turned out quite well. I really pushed him into the deck and bathroom. Results were ok, but not what you would get from a person dedicated to that practice. I would image his skills continue to improve. Ask him if he feels the job is not his strength. My experience is he is real sincere guy.

I got about 3 or 4 quotes for the work from different handymen and contractors in the area. Mark seemed to me the most qualified and provided the most vision of how and when he would complete the work. Due to weather it was important to start the work soon after the first quote. Mark was very responsive and started the work a few days after I called him. He completed the work in less than a week and was easy to get in touch with. The cost was higher than some other quotes but I wanted to use the better material that Mark had found since our front porch is a prominent feature of our house. I will plan to use Mark again for future work.
Description of Work: Our house is about 100 years old and needed the floor of the front porch which is open replaced. There was also some rotted exterior trim which needed to be repaired. Mark did a great job restoring the porch using high quality fir tongue and groove. He replaced some of the subfloor and reinforced some rotting support beams. He also applied a exterior stain that I supplied.

Mark installed all our new base trim as well as door and some window trim. He shows up when he says he will and works very hard all day. Mark was challenged with a house that isn't completely square, and he made it work. He also helped design and custom make some transition base for a slightly elevated floor. We will call Mark when we have some more projects. Thanks Mark
Description of Work: Installed Door,Window and Base trim.
We struggled with old and failing bath tub faucets for several years. Our plumber was able to band-aid things on several occasions but the fixture needed to be replaced. Unfortunately it could not be replaced without tearing out the tub wall and once the wall was torn out the entire bath would need to be redone (old house/continuous old tile all around). We picked Mark from Angie's list several years ago when we first considered this project because of his good recommendations and his willingness to provide labor only services. When we finally decided to do the project this year, we re-evaluated our choices and still determined that Mark was our 1st choice. We found Mark to be a skilled workman with good attention to detail and diligence for the task. His honest, reliable communication throughout the entire project was most appreciated. Perhaps most impressive was Mark?s unflappable attitude and perseverance despite numerous setbacks and obstacles. We had predictable obstacles like crooked walls and un-level floors, but also unique carpentry and tiling challenges. He made intricate tile patterns appear square when the floor was not and overcame a bulge in the wall in a very conspicuous spot among other things. The constant we could rely on throughout this project was that Mark would find a satisfactory solution and that he was always working to get things right. Through it all, Mark was patient, professional, and his pride in workmanship shows in the final product. We are very pleased with our "new" bathroom..
Description of Work: Complete tear out of bathroom except for electrical and counter frame. Installation of new cast iron bath tub, bathtub fixtures, and tile surround. Tiling of toilet stall and re-installation of toilet. Relocation of two new medicine cabinets and installation of an additional mirror, installation of new counter top, two sinks with new faucets, and tile back splash. Re-built drawers and doors for counter (16 doors/drawers). Painted ceiling, walls, and cabinetry. Install shut-off valves for both sinks and the tub.

We bid out this job to several contractors and Mark came in with the best price. We had hired Mark once before and we were extremely happy with the work. We wanted to get started right away and Mark was able to move around a few jobs to accommodate. We were remodeling our only bathroom so we had to move out during the three week job (ended up taking less time). We felt completely confident in Mark and had no problem giving him a key to the house. The work moved very quickly with Mark giving us updates on progress and checking in when he needed a decision from us. Our biggest challenge was getting supplies ordered and delivered fast enough to give Mark enough to do. At one point the job was stalled because a shower part was on backorder leaving us without a shower or bath for 3 more weeks. As soon as the part came in Mark took time out of his weekend to install it for us. Midway through the project we decided to replace all the doors in our hallway. Mark was able to give us a timeline and estimate added this to the list without problems. We are very happy with the way our bathroom turned out and we are getting compliments from all guests. We will definitely hire Mark again.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of our bathroom. We did the tear down ourselves but hired Mark to do the following: - Rebuilding subfloor - Move heating duct - Installing bathroom fan - Replacing window with glass blocks - Installing tile floor - drywall - Wood trim/wainscoting - Move electrical outlet - Installed new toilet, sink and claw foot tub - Hung new doors throughout hallway - Trimmed new doorways
Excellent. Mark was responsive to emails and calls. He came out and gave a bid, we agreed on a start date and he was punctual from start to finish. He was very resourceful, encouraged me to use existing products, his work was excellent and I plan on having him come back in the fall for more projects. It was great to work with someone that I trusted to be in my house, he was pleasant and did great work. I would highly recommend Mark!
Description of Work: Mark did some remodeling in the basement, took down some walls, took up carpet, repaired walls, painted walls and floor. He also stained my deck, put up new railing on an upper deck and a new hand rail on front steps.

Mark did an absolutely beautiful job. The only problem we encountered was that the paint choice that I chose for my accent wall (Behr, Deep Royal) is very translucent, even with the primer already in the paint! This caused a need for additional paint and of course, additional time for Mr. Ruffner. His bid was very reasonable to begin with ($500) that I felt it necessary to give him additional money ($200) for the extra time required to get the desired effect. It looks amazing. He even checked back via e-mail to see if it still needed an additional coat of paint!

Our basement was very dated and dismal and needed updating. After receiving several quotes, Mark was clearly the right person to work with. He is very experienced, and meticulous with his work. He is a wealth of knowledge, and would offer suggestions/options as our basement projects progressed. And, despite experiencing a family emergency, Mark promptly and courteously started and finished all of the projects on schedule and on budget. We look forward to working with Mark again in the future!
Description of Work: Removed ceiling tile in laundry room, and replaced with sheet rock. The project did have a bit of a delay because he had a sick child, but we were able to flex with that. The cabinets are very solidly anchored and are nice and level. The drywall looks very nice. Overall, we?re very happy with the results and we feel like we got our money?s worth. We may do some additional work on the bathroom later this year, and if we do, we will definitely call him for a quote.
Description of Work: We’re remodeling our kitchen and doing as much work as possible ourselves, to save money. However, we decided we wanted a professional to install the cabinets to make sure they wouldn’t fall off the walls, so we hired Mark. His bid included tear-out and haul-away of the existing cabinets, as well as installation. When we had him remove some wood paneling from one wall, we discovered that the previous owner had put it up to hide crumbling plaster. He had no problem expanding his bid to include replacing the damaged plaster with drywall, and he drove over to our house for a couple of mornings after the bulk of the work was done, just long enough to sand down the joints and put additional coats of drywall mud on them.
