Mark's bid was definitely competitive but not the lowest we received of 5, and we chose him in large part because we loved the idea of working with a one-man show who does 1 project at a time, and because our family is mostly home during the day and would be spending a lot of time around whomever we hired. Mark has a really competent, pleasant and easy going energy and it was a pleasure to have him in our home. Our main floor bathroom was really the bane of our existence, and Mark demoed it in two days, removing all fixtures, tile, flooring down to the subfloor, walls to studs and even an atrocious and absurd tiled ceiling. He subbed out the electrical and plumbing rough-ins and finals with really nice guys, and was able to schedule everything seamlessly. There was hardly an idle day from start to finish, and the total schedule aligned nearly exactly with his timeline estimates. His cost estimate was also right on; we actually were able to find a few places in the budget to reallocate money for a couple of upgrades without going over. I had a really specific idea of how I wanted things to look, and Mark delivered. We're thrilled with our new bathroom. I'll attach a picture here for you to see. Several people have thought that I was showing them a Pinterest image when I showed them a photo of it. Mark also replaced both exterior entry doors on our home (one of which we had custom painted at Maaco of all places) and a storm door. We're totally pleased with both. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mark. He did a great job and we're so glad we hired him.
Description of Work: Full gut and renovation down to studs of our 5x8' main floor full bathroom, including new plumbing, electrical and tempered glass replacement to bring shower window up to code. Replaced two exterior entry doors and one storm door.

We used Mark a little over a year ago for a full bathroom remodel. When we decided to do a full kitchen remodel we knew exactly who to call. We were so pleased with his work the first time we didn't seek out any additional bids. Our project got started a little later than we had anticipated but this was no fault of Marks. Our cabinet maker lost our order and wasn't ready on time. Mark took this problem in stride and started the job a month later when we were ready. Once we got started things moved along smoothly. Mark and his team are always one time, hard working and professional. We ran into a few minor problems but Mark always had a solution for us. Our kitchen turned out beautiful and we couldn't be more thrilled. When we decide to start our next project Mark will be our first and only call. If your looking for someone for your project that is honest, trustworthy and an all around great guy then give Mark a call. You will be as pleased with the outcome as we are. I can't forget to add that he's very pet friendly.

Had some miscommunications on scheduling, email is the best way to contact Mark given how attentive he is to clients when he's on the job. Mark worked really hard for the full eight hours, offered helpful suggestions and solutions, and gave us a bid on some additional work that we knew we couldn't fit into the day. He was very easy to work with and did a great job. We'd definitely work with him again and recommend him to others.

Our main bath features the original pink tile from 1955. We can live with the pink, but can't live without having a second shower in the house. The bath has a bathtub but was not constructed to be used as a bath/shower combo. The tile only went up to a wainscotting height and the pony wall at the back of the tub was far too low to hold a shower curtain rod or contain shower spray. To use it as a shower, we needed to create a surround above the existing bathtub and increase the height of an existing pony wall at the end of the bathtub. The job would involve installing wall tile. When I contacted Mark, he was able to come out for a bid within a few days. When we met for the bid, Mark respected our preference to preserve as much of the pink tile as possible, and install new tile above. Finding matching pink tile would be neary impossible, so we discussed using basic white tile for the walls. lWe also agreed upon a glass block wall being built. Mark provided a bid soon after, and we accepted and scheduled the work. Mark was very professional throughout the job and cleaned up the work area every day. There was a delay in finishing the job--entirely my fault--I purchased some hardware for a handheld shower that didn't work out. Also, Mark tried an alternative to drilling into the newly finished glass block wall to install a shower rod as the screws and anchors would be visible. In the end, I asked him to drill into the wall. If you really look hard, you can see the anchor and screws. The project was a success--we've been using the shower daily and we're pleased with the way the old and new tile work together.

Mark did a GREAT job installing our kitchen cabinetry and advising us of any issues that came up. He asked all the right questions beforehand and provided a professional, clear and concise estimate very quickly. He was very easy to get ahold of via email and was always prompt with his responses. He arrived on time each day and was hard-working and efficient when he was here, paying attention to detail and offering ideas when appropriate. Mark is an all around nice guy and great to work with. We would definitely hire or recommend him for any future job without hesitation. We are so happy and could not have asked for a better experience.

I had bought 2 big deals of "general contractor for a full day" from Angie's List. I contacted Mark in June and he came by and went over the project with me. Since I was not in a hurry, I let him make the timing of the project to be done in October. He was very professional, willing to do the job exactly like I wanted it done, had great attention to detail, and cleaned up the job site at the completion of the project. I would recommend him for any job that he is qualified for.

We are very pleased with how our bathroom looks. Mark and team were very professional, receptive to ideas, and punctual. He helped design a new layout for our bathroom, replace the bathtub and vanity, build a shower and tile floors and walls - a complete remodel. Everything was done on time and Mark was great at consulting with us every step of the way. The few times changes need to be made to the plan or unexpected work needed to be done, he took the time to explain why to us and make sure we were comfortable with the changes before he did them.

I'm not sure what else I could have done to earn an A rating. The [removed member name]s purchased 1 "Big Deal" (8 hours of work) I installed a shower door and a storm door the first day - which took 6.5 hours. They also wanted a new door installed for the master bedroom. The door did not fit the existing opening. a lot of work needed to be done to the door to make it fit. I knew it couldn't be completed in the 1.5 hours still remaining. I asked if I could come back on my next available day and I would give them credit for the 1.5 hours remaining. I came back to complete the job on the day we agreed upon and they forgot I was coming, so we had to reschedule. I completed the door install on the next visit. It took 2.5 hours to complete and I only charged them for 1 additional hour. The work was done to perfection, I showed up on time all three appointments and I only charged them for the time I was working. I don't know what I could have done differently.

The whole project went really well from start to finish. I was impressed with Mark's quality of work and his professionalism. My husband was amazed at how perfect the bathroom ceiling turned out (it was a tough job with a few different layers from past remodel attempts). He was great to work with. He kept in communication and offered suggestions when I needed them. When we asked questions about painting and the other DIY work we wanted to do afterwards, he was very helpful. We've had the opportunity to work with a few handymen and so far he's the best. We will definitely hire him again for our next project.

Mark was fantastic. He did everything he said he would, being very clear about process and timeline. He brought in a plumber and electrician as needed. Mark is a good listener, very professional, and his work is detailed and well-done. He doesn't shy away from complicated problems--like how to move a steel tub out and back into our 100 year old home. When a small crack appeared in the grout after the refurbished claw foot tub was brought back to out home he came right back to remove the grout in that area and redo it with a more flexible type of grout. Mark is just a super nice guy. He's also an animal lover. We left home for a week while the tear-out work was being done and had a cat sitter stop by; when Mark noticed one of the cats was ill, he phoned the cat sitter without us even asking him to! He really went above and beyond. We completely trusted him with our home. Mark is one of our best Angie's List finds.
Description of Work: We needed a bathroom update! We didn't need a remodel--everything was fine where it was, but the floor, walls, claw foot tub, toilet, and vanity were all in bad shape and needed fixing up or replacing.

You get the whole package with Mark! He's prompt -- contacting me within a couple hours after purchasing the Big Deal, following up with several e-mails to assure that he and I would have the proper materials for the day, and showing up when he said he would. He's knowledgeable -- Mark easily moved from job-to-job with the skills of an experienced professional. He's conscientious -- it was easy to trust Mark with my projects when I saw the level of detail and thought he put into each job. I would certainly hire him for future jobs.
Description of Work: I hired Mark, for eight hours, through the Angie's List Big Deal offer. He completed a variety of jobs including tiling, swapping out utility sinks, re-caulking showers, installing hardware and more. He was SO efficient (yet thorough), that I actually had to come up with additional projects for him!
Mark emailed me immediately and was able to fit me in during the week I wanted the service. He was also helpful by responding to my questions about what materials I needed, so I could buy the lumber and he could concentrate on the job. ( at my request.} He came on time, completed the job quickly, efficiently and competently, including making a shelf type window sill I wanted that we hadn't discussed before he arrived. He also painted so that when he left, the job was completely finished. Working with Mark was an excellent experience and I definitely plan to hire him again! Plus, he was very neat and organized and he likes and accommodated my big friendly dogs!
Description of Work: I had an unfinished doorway and window in my kitchen and bought an Angie's list big deal for 1 day of handyman service from Mark Ruffner. Work completed: Emailing a materials list based on photos foam insulation of window building a window frame and installing trim molding and a window sill building trim/molding around a door that wasn't square. (It looks great!) Install baseboard and quarter round Painting everything

We hired Mark to do a complete bathroom remodel and a window installation. Being that we only have one bathroom it's a project that we dreaded and put off for a couple years. We decided when this project started to go on vacation for 8 days. I had no hesitations with handing over the keys to the house and trusting Mark while we were away. When we arrived home we were thrilled to see the progress that had been made. Mark was even ahead of schedule. Mark has such a great work ethic and really cares about doing the job right. He is EXTREMELY punctual and he communicates every step of the way. Our bathroom turned out gorgeous. As one friend put it, it's HGTV worthy. We were do lucky to have found Mark for this remodel. Hire him for your project and you'll know you're in good hands. Mark will be our first call for future projects. I must also mention it was nice that Mark was so pet friendly! In the end it felt like we hired a friend. Mark, we can't thank you enough for all your hard work!

Great! We initially purchased three days of the Angie's Big Deal for soffit tear out/repair. We then hired Mark to do more work as our project progressed. The soffit tear out was difficult as they were very solidly built. It was a messy job, but no where near as messy as I thought it would be and Mark tidied up at the end of each day. After the soffits were torn out, Mark recommended that we have the electrician out to do the electrical modifications we were going to do before he started his sheetrock patching and he flexed his schedule to accomodate. Once the electrical work was done, Mark returned for three days to remove the popcorn ceiling, patch sheetrock and skimcoat/sand/skimcoat/sand/skimcoat/sand the ceiling. Again, this is a messy, messy job, but again, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. We used plastic to cover everything and to seal off doorways. Next, it was on to the concealed hinges, plugging the big holes left in both the cabinets and cabinet frames by the old exposed hinges that were embedded in the wood. Mark is great to work with, pleasant, friendly, (dog lover, too - bonus ;)). When he commits to you for a day and time, he will be there. He is very punctual, professional and hard working. He is good at figuring things out or finding solutions when unexpected issues come up. We would hire Mark again in a heartbeat and highly recommend him. He's an all around great guy.
Description of Work: Assisted with kitchen remodel; our kitchen is approx. 21' x 15' and we were going to have our golden oak cabinets laquered and replace the exposed hinges replaced with concealed hinges. Mark tore out about 30 to 40 feet of kitchen soffits that were extremely solidly built with drywall on top of chip board. He then patched and repaired the sheetrock where the soffits were torn out and where recessed lights were moved around. He removed popcorn ceiling from the kitchen ceiling and skimcoated and sanded the entire ceiling to a smooth finish. He also made about 170 little wood "T"s to plug holes left in our cabinet frames and doors from the original exposed hinges and then filled the remaining gaps with 2-part epoxy and sanded to a smooth finish. He then drilled all the holes in the cabinet doors for the concealed hinges. After the cabinet frames/doors were laquered, he installed the concealed hinges in the cabinet doors and reinstalled/adjusted all the kitchen cabinet doors (about 40 of them).

Mark was wonderful- easy going and easy to work with. He worked under some extremely difficult conditions- working outside on some of the hottest and most humid days of summer, but never complained. He had to cut a couple of days short because of this, but came back an extra day to finish the job. The deck was small, but had several odd angles and wrap-around steps- if he didn't pay attention to every detail, the end result would have been sloppy, but that was not the case at all. We are very happy with the completed deck and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mark.
