John came up with some good design ideas for an unusual shelf project, and he found all the materials that were needed to make it look first class instead of just the usual shelf components. We found John very willing to put in extra effort and time to get every piece, even small details, exactly right. Beside giving us good advice, the quality of John's work was first rate. His work was done on time and he cleaned up after he was done. And we felt his prices were very reasonable. Working with John was a very positive experience.
Description of Work: John Melin's company is now called Essential Renovations. John not only came right away when we called him for a bid on two projects, but he also provided us with good design ideas for glass shelves we wanted to install between two walls. John reframed an existing doorway and installed double doors in our basement and they turned out perfect. We wanted to match the door knobs and the trim as close as possible to what we already had in the room, and John made extra trips to the lumber yard to check samples in order to match everything as best as could be. The glass shelves he had someone make for us had to fit in an exact space and when John installed them, they fit perfectly and look absolutely stunning. This is probably the first time we ever had work done where everything was completed on time, and the work exceeded our expectations. John is very professional, always on time, and does quality work. We highly recommend him.

He was very responsive to my request for a quote. However, his quote was higher than what I wanted to pay and so I decided to go with someone else. He was very professional and listened to what I wanted. He had some good ideas about how to accomplish those. I think that he would probably do a very good job.
Description of Work: Room To Improve LLC gave me a quote in February for designing and building a walk-in closet in my bedroom.
When we called John, we were still working through ideas for our kitchen remodel. He did an excellent job of listening to where we were coming from and then helping to bring our ideas together. We met with other remodelers and decided to stop working with the others prior to receiving bids when we realized we had begun talking to them about John's design ideas. He understood our desire to restore arts and crafts design elements to our home and brought ideas we hadn't considered which really turned out to be some of the highlights to our new kitchen. In particular, the new windows and closet door work very nicely with the original wood work of our 1914 home, while improving energy efficiency and usefulness. John and his partner Dan both have an easy manner and I always enjoyed our meeting prior to and throughout the project. Their concern for the customer and for quality were clear from the beginning. That sold us along with the knowledge that we were shopping for a working relationship we would feel comfortable with. We were happy with the process and are thrilled with the results.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen counter tops, sink and faucet. Moved cabinetry. Added additional cabinets, counter top, and added a broom closet. Two windows were added to the kitchen and a door was replaced. Lighting and outlets were added. Texture was removed from the ceiling and it was repainted with the walls.

We wanted to open up our living space and integrate the kitchen, dining and living areas. This meant removing carpet and kitchen flooring. It also meant the removal of a wall that separated the kitchen from the other living spaces. We thought the whole process went very well from the preliminary proposal to the end result. The contract was detailed, clear and throughly explained. The work, from demolition to finish carpentry was terrific. John and Dan are competent and committed to work that is top notch. We are pleased with the work and are excited about our new living space. With all the horror stories about remodeling nightmares one hears it is good to know that there are highly professional, talented and ethical people in the trade.
Description of Work: We had a bearing wall removed and new flooring installed throughout the kitchen, dining and living rooms. The stairway to the lower level was done as well with new oak treads and risers.
As I've said, all we knew was that we wanted to use our kitchen space better and for that space to look nicer. Although it would have been easy to do so simply by replacing the 50-year-old metal cupboards and fixing cracked walls, we were grateful for John s eye for design and experience remodeling older homes to bring out our kitchen s potential. John wanted to make sure the kitchen s design harmonized with the beauty of the oak flooring and built-in buffet of the adjoining dining room. He appreciated the importance of maintaining the character of our 1924 bungalow while bringing the kitchen up to 2008 quality. John really wanted us to consider putting a wood floor in the kitchen because of how it would complement the wood of the dining room and living room. This is one of the few areas where we knew what we wanted, a lower-cost but still high quality wood-look laminate. When we made our feelings clear, John accepted our decision and even recommended where we might find the best quality, reasonably-priced flooring. Throughout the remodel process, we were amazed at how clean the workers left the house at the end of the day. The zippered plastic doorways to the kitchen allowed us to still go through there but kept the construction dust contained. The floors were swept and tools put away neatly every day. In addition to the kitchen work, we decided to have Dan address some annoying old fix-ups we d wanted done for a long time. This included installing a light switch in the bathroom and replacing the dilapidated medicine cabinet, sizing up our doors so they would close, replacing old wiring, and installing an energy-efficient back door. It s amazing how these small changes can make such a difference in your life! One of the changes that has made the most difference for us, however, was the closet they installed in the closed-off hallway. This is such an excellent use of space again, how did we live without it? It was a great idea to have Dan address these small projects. We saved money with these projects unrelated to the kitchen because the electrician was already at our house. And after the manufacturer said there would be a delay in delivering our cupboards, we definitely appreciated Dan s persistence in getting them to deliver when originally promised. We are so very pleased with not only the kitchen but also the improvements that Room to Improve has made to our home. However, the kitchen is the masterpiece, and we no longer feel embarrassed by a crappy kitchen when we host a gathering at our house. In fact, we insist everyone take a tour!
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel, new walls, ceiling, floor, re-plumb & move sink, rewire & add outlets & lighting, install new cabinetry, install new window (change size of window), build closet in hallway & add light, upgrade old hard-wired smoke detector, install light switch in bathroom & replace old medicine cabinet, replace back storm door, & sized up doors in house that wouldn't close properly. The two words that best describe our experience with Room to Improve are quality and trust. From helping us redesign the kitchen to re-plumbing our kitchen & installing the cabinet knobs, John and Dan took the utmost care & made sure we were satisfied with the results. When we finally made the decision to go ahead with remodeling the kitchen, we really had no idea what the end result would look like except that we d have more counter space and the whole room would look nicer. At our first meeting, John listened, asked questions, took notes, & finally photographed both the kitchen & the area in the basement beneath the kitchen. A few weeks later we met again to review different floor plan drawings for the various options he d come up with. Wow! Whereas we had thought mostly about just replacing the 50-year-old metal cupboards & getting new walls & floor, John had come up with numerous options and the approximate costs of each. The most radical suggestion was closing off the doorway from the kitchen to the hallway and replacing it with a pantry cabinet on one side and a hall closet on the opposite side. That was the most difficult decision for me, but he never pushed it and stressed that whatever we decided, we d have a better room than we had now. In the end, we decided to put in the pantry and closet, and now I wonder how I ever lived without it. And how could we never have thought of moving the sink to the other side of the kitchen, so we could look out the window while we worked? That simple idea made a world of difference and made doing dishes so much more enjoyable! Once we decided on the floor plan, John met with us to make sure we understood the costs, schedule, and possible circumstances that might delay certain parts of the project. The schedule was very helpful because we knew what was expected of us (e.g., when we had to purchase the faucet, when the fridge should be delivered) and what we should expect of Room to Improve. Although it was tedious at times, we saw the value in John going through the plan item by item (demolition, disposal, plumbing install, etc) with us. There would be no surprises in this remodel! John also told us when payments would be due, which helped us project cash flow. He also suggested we meet weekly to discuss progress and any other small projects we might want tackled along the way.
