We had low hot water flow in our kitchen sink. Plumber arrived on-time and determined he needed to replace old galvanized piping that was corroded and creating blockages through the line. Overall, felt he did a very good job and he seemed honest and thorough in his explanations.

The person who came out was pretty good at what he does, but, he did not have the right equipment to fix the job. He had to call a sub contractor who had better tools to take care o f the problem. They took care of the problem and it is working fine now. They also cleaned up very well and nothing was damaged during the work. I would recommend them to anyone. They are one of my favorites out of most of the people I have used for plumbing work. They have always been on time; people are good and very easy to talk to. They are very good to have around which is very important to me. They do great work and do not over charge me for unnecessary things. I am very happy with them.

The work was done at a house in Falcon Heights. Donnie was great. The person taking the order was not. I explained that the leak was inside the house before the first valve, therefore, the water would have to be shut off by St. Paul water dept. The person taking the order wrote down "Inside piping for water meter is leaking." Consequently Donnie did not know to call (or have me call) St. Paul to come out and turn off the water at the street. When he called on Wed. to say he was on his way, I told him that the water would have to be turned off. He was surprised but said he would call the water dept to turn it off. He got here, we waited for them to come. When the first person came, she was unable to turn off the valve so called in a supervisor. At that point we agreed that Donnie should go on to his next job and I would call when the water was turned off. Well, the supervisor came out and also was unable to turn off the water. He said we are going to have to "dig." We set that up for Friday. Fortunately, St. Paul does not hold the home owner responsible for the cost of digging, unlike Minneapolis as Donnie said. I called Donnie to say "Don't come," and called the office to set up an appointment on the following Monday. We called the water dept who came and turned off the water, then I called Donnie and he came and completed the job in 1/2 hour. He charged me the first half hour the minimum for a service call, then for Monday he charged me the $34 per 15 minutes, considering this to be a continuation of the first call. Overall, he ended up spending considerably more than the total of one hour that I was charged. That was more than fair under the circumstances.
Description of Work: Had a slow leak in the water pipe coming into our house, on the street side of the first shut off valve in our house. Donnie cut out the leaking section of pipe and replaced it with a flare adapter and brass threaded sections. The order also included a clogged floor drain in the laundry room. Donnie was quick to recommend SOS Drain and Sewer Cleaning to do the job, and they came out that afternoon and did a great job - quick and effective.

Al was on time, courteous, diagnosed the situation properly, fixed it and was a joy to work with.
Description of Work: Another plumber was called and claimed to clear a bathtub drain on 9-14-09. I discovered the next day that he's just moved the blockage from one bathtub to a bathtub in the floor below. When he came back to 'fix' the problem he said he was sure we had a collapsed pipe that his company couldn't handle. So we called Randy's and Al came and within an hour he had both tubs draining perfectly. We will never use anyone else.

Overall, it was a very good experience. The only problem was that he arrived an hour late. I had that some experience with this company last year, but liked their work and price so decided to give them another chance. He said that he had to get gas and that the traffic was bad. On the other hand, he was so helpful and went beyond what I had originally called him for to make sure that all the drains in the bathroom were in good working order. He replaced the bathtub drain because it had gotten corroded. He was very pleasant to work with. The price charged by this company was very reasonable.
Description of Work: He cleaned the bathroom sink drain that was very plugged up and rechecked the bathtub drain that they had cleared about a year ago. Thenhe put in another stopper that I could take out and clean out periodically

I came home from camping on a Sunday night, got in the shower, and quickly discovered there was no hot water in the house. Further investigation brought me to the basement, where I found water coming out from the bottom of the water heater, and a motor continuously trying to run. I shut off the water heater and called and left a message for Randy Lane on Sunday night around 7pm. I talked to them Monday morning and arranged to have them come out Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. They called and said they were going to be 2 hours late, but ended up only being an hour late. That was okay. Shortly after they arrived, they had to run out and get a different water heater at the warehouse (note special venting mentioned above). They didn't charge us for their travel time. They got it installed in about an hour, and were on their way. Shortly after they left, we saw a small leak on the cold water inlet side. We called and they came back in the morning and fixed the leak. When I went to shower the next morning (before they came), I noticed again that we had cold water. As it turns out, they had forgotten to turn on the heater after the leak repair. The next day I noticed a big rust stain on the driveway. I'm assuming it was from rust from the old heater. It doesn't look like they tried to sweep it up. We had a couple of other projects we wanted to have done when they were here. They were on the call sheet (the one the scheduler fills out). We had a kitchen sink where the hot water ran slow and a tub faucet that needed to be replaced. These didn't get addressed, because it seemed like the guys were in a hurry to get done with their work day. They said we'd have to call and make another appointment to get the other work done. They didn't even make a quote for the work. The water heater is a good water heater, and we haven't had any issues since we got the leak fixed. We're going to use someone else for the other jobs, because it seemed like they were too busy to deal with the other stuff.
Description of Work: Replaced water heater with 40 gallon AO Smith model. Our model had special venting requirements, and thus was not the "standard". I'm not sure why, but it could be because we're in the range of the airport and have had MAC updates.

The upstairs toilet overflowed and would not stop running. I turned off the water and called Randy Lane & Sons. A plumber came out the same day. He reviewed all of my plumbing issues and started working. He worked quickly, completed what he could, ordered replacement parts and returned the next day to install replacement parts. I was impressed by the plumber's communication skills. He really listened to me and answered all of my questions. He was a pleasure to have in my home.

I called Randy Lane Plumbing after feeling like I got completely ripped off by a different company. The person I talked to on the phone was very nice, and even though I had told them that I didn't need work done, they took the time to talk me through what had already been done at my house and what their costing would have been on it. With the "bad" company, I paid $424 for 80 minutes of work and $30-$60 of parts, and when I questioned the bad company that did it to ask for itemization on how this $424 total was calculated, got yelled at for questioning their pricing structure. Randy Lane was upfront about what their labor rates would have been, and I would have probably gotten the work done for $280 or less if done by them. I wish I had worked with them (and will give them a try in the future), and really appreciate that they took the time to talk me through their pricing.

I have had mixed success with plumbers in the past which is why I signed up for Angie's list again. I don't know that Randy Lane & Sons needs another star next to their name, but they deserve it. Two plumbers came out and spent half a day working on this project. I was terrified about the bill, but it honestly cost about a quarter of what I was thinking. Essentially, they charged less for 8 hours of work and material than their competitor charged me for a 30 minute job. I'd recommend them to my family (and I already have!)
Description of Work: Had a bar drain that was not properly vented to code (just drained into the sump pump well). Plumbing included a complete reroute and even opening up some walls to route plumbing through existing construction. Needed to pass inspection for sale of home.

The office staff at Randy Lane was professional and accomodating, as was the plumber who came to my house. He seemed very knowledgeable. However, their bid was very extremely high compared to the other two I got. I'm sure they are quite capable but I can only conclude that they must not need the work.

The project went very well. I have some old pipes and it was difficult to determine where to stop the project. Brian Lane was the only one I called who would come out and give me an estimate. The other plumbers I called just wanted someone to come out and do the job on a time/materials basis. With the estimate, I was better able to determine what I could afford (not everything!) and Brian gave me some tips on how I could save $ by doing some pre-work ahead of the plumbing work. John came out and did a great job doing the things that needed the most fixing.
Description of Work: I had an old boiler tank removed along with some corroded waste pipes. I also had a kitchen sink re-plumbed with the existing hardware.
