Services we offer
Tree trimming and tree removal, including high risk tree climbing and difficult removals. Brush and Debris Removal, stump grinding.
Our neighbor needed a tree removed from there yard and Primate needed access through our yard to complete the service. I agreed to help my neighbor and allow Primate to use my yard to access and remove the tree. After they left and I returned from work I found my backyard grass to be torn up from the machinery they used. Of course they didn’t do anything to remedy what they destroyed and left without even a note. If this is how they conduct business with little to no regard for people’s property then I suggest you look elsewhere. If you want idiots smoking cigarettes in your yard and tearing up your grass then I guess your as stupid and incompetent as they are and it will be just the ******** tree service you’re looking for.

The estimator arrived on time. He gave me a written estimate and documentation that the company provides workman's comp insurance for it's employees. His estimate was the lowest I received. I was unsure about what to expect because another estimate I received indicated a preference of waiting until the lawn was frozen to remove the tree but Primate preferred to remove it this fall. The crew that took down the tree arrived on the day and within the window I was promised. They worked quickly and efficiently. They removed the limbs, etc. with a sled and four wheeler. I was nervous about possible damage to the lawn from the for wheeler tires with the damp fall weather and multiple trips across the lawn but it turned out to be minimal. The crew raked and removed the debris (leaves, small branches and most of the chain saw cutting chips from the area). The limbs and debris were mulched and taken away. All in all I was satisfied with the whole experience and would definitely consider hiring this company again.

Not well. I have been a member of Angie's List for at least 15 years and never written a negative review before. The owners Matt and Justin spoke to me in the most unprofessional, rude and insulting manner possible. When Matt came, I pointed out everything I wanted done and he indicated that he agreed to do it. He quoted me $600 and wrote up a general description of the work he would perform on a approx. 5x 7 piece of paper. When Justin came to do the work, he did about half the work they had contracted to do When I pointed out work he neglected to perform, he argued and said things in a loud, obnoxious tone like "I'm not doing any work for free", Truly an awful experience. When he left, my neighbor came over and commented that it didn't look like any work had been done at all. Justin left without asking for payment (leaving my backyard gate open wide, when I asked him to be careful not to let out the dog). Then, about two weeks after the services were performed, I received a phone message from Matt indicating that they were expecting payment. I called and left him a message indicating that I did not intend to pay him until all the work agreed to was done. I also noted that I had called him when the work was being done, and he did not return my call. He did not call me. Rather, he just showed up at my home without notice when I was away. When I came home, he was walking around my house. He told me that he had removed the saplings that had not been cut down and said that there were only a few and probably had grown since the first work was done. I told him that was not true and that I would call my neighbor to confirm that they were there immediately after they were there. I told him how his partner had spoken to me and he dismissed my account of what had happened and said that he believed his partner. When I pointed out a dead part of a bush that he had agreed to remove, he became snotty and told me that that portion of the bush had probably died since the other services had been performed. He basically called me a liar and hurled insults at me at the top of his lungs. At one point he shoved the list of tasks he had originally agreed to perform and screamed "can you read." I did not raise my voice, but told him not to speak to me in that fashion. I am over 60 years old and have had many people work for me at my house. I have NEVER encountered anyone like these men. They are unprofessional, abusive, thugs. I paid them what we had agreed to - not because they earned even half of the money but, because I am an honorable person. I will never call someone who drops a card in my mailbox again. I should have looked on Angie's list . Stay away!!

Response from Primate Tree Care LLC
This review is completely untruthful. I have video and other evidence to show there is no truth to what she claims whatsoever. Yes we did give her a detailed written quote with all work to be completed painstakingly itemized one by one so it could never be disputed by anyone. That is true. This written quote which we both have identical copies of and went over in extreme detail during the estimate, clearly states we were to remove all the saplings growing in her rock gardens and one regular garden in the back yard. pulling those saplings that could be pulled by hand and cutting the rest. I have film of the completed work, and after over a half hour of scrounging around I managed to find two pencil size diameter saplings in all of her rock gardens and regular garden that were hiding. This is out of dozens and dozens if not hundreds that were growing in her gardens, that she was hiring us to remove. So we actually did about 99.99% of the entire job and only missed two tiny saplings blending into the rest of the vegetation. And once again, I have video evidence for anyone who wants to see it. On top of this, we actually pulled tons of weeds during our first visit as well, which were clearly not part of the deal. This was done for free in a vain attempt to appease this unreasonable customer. Next, I myself showed up to see her complaints in person, and like I said above spent a half hour more extensively searching every area to find a whopping two pencil sized 12" tall saplings hiding randomly within other garden/landscape plants. During this time I also plucked dozens and dozens of more weeds for free, and freshly sprouted 1"-2" maple saplings that had sprouted in the two weeks or so between the day we did her job and the day I went back to look at it again. This customer has had tons of extra free work done and is claiming we didn't do her job properly. Well I have about ten minutes of video of every rock garden and every item on her invoice for anyone who wants to see if they can find a single sapling growing in these areas after we had been there. And if the customer has even one shred of evidence of her claims I would absolutely love to see it. She is only upset because she was unable to take advantage of us any more than she did. This customer assumed she would ask for an estimate to have all the small trees growing up in her rock gardens cut or pulled out, and then try and turn that into weeding every weed from all her gardens as well. As she says in her complaint, she is offended that we didn't want to do free work for her. She is honest about one thing, I certainly did call her a liar just as she claims. That is definitely true. And her dying bush in front was and probably still is in the process of yellowing and wilting across different parts of it. There were fresh cuts all over it where the dead pieces had been removed two weeks earlier, and now two weeks later there was a small number of freshly yellowing twigs which I removed again on that 2nd visit. I also have detailed video of these fresh cuts, with the fresh yellowing twigs still attached right near the fresh cuts. I absolutely did not yell at her at the top of my lungs. However I did ask her if she could read when she tried telling me we were supposed to remove the entire dying bush in front of her house when in reality she had only requested to have the dying shoots taken off. And therefore the invoice reads "clip several dead shoots from small bush in front along sidewalk..." not remove entire bush. More dishonesty from this customer. When someone is being deceitful and telling me there not going to pay unless I do more and more free work for them, I don't just let that happen. I fight for whats honest and fair. And in no sugar coated way I tell anyone who is trying to play these games with us exactly what I am willing to do to correct the situation. Which usually involves filing a mechanics lien on the property for the entire cost of the unpaid bill, plus a 20% late fee, and the cost of filing the lien itself, plus 20% interest on all of that until its paid. Like she said, I'm sure she hasn't met anyone like us before, she is probably used to the company rolling over and being more willing to be taken advantage of. Well we don't play that game. "We don't monkey around." We mean it. With anything, or anyone. That goes for anyone who hires us, no matter who they are or who they think they are. Several people a year try this with us and I handle every one the same exact way. If you want to pretend your work isn't done properly when the clearly written invoice and the facts say otherwise, don't expect us to roll over for you one bit. It might work with some of these other companies but not us. We have far too many fair and reasonable customers for that.

Tree removed quickly. Equipment left ruts in grass on both sides of driveway. Also made marks in tile driveway. Clean-up from removal of tree was sloppy. Didn't removal material from grinding stump. Thought we talked about it but not specifically listed in estimate. When called Primate to discuss stump issue, person was rude/arrogant.

I received a written bid from this company to remove a tree and we had agreed to move forward with the job. On the day they were scheduled to arrive, they did not show. I received no calls or notes from them. I called them the following day and was told they would be out the next day. This went on for 2 more days with no responses from them unless I contacted them first. Finally 4 days later I called and left a message and texted them asking for an update on when they were going to remove the tree, I received a text from one of the partners telling me to contact the other partner saying " he was supposed to call you" I left a message for the second partner and finally received a text back saying that to remove the tree they now wanted $300 more dollars. The "new" bid moved them to the highest quote out of the 4 I had received from other tree places. Written bids are not actually their bids apparently. Not a way to do business.
Description of Work: Did a no show (for 4 days), then increased the cost if I wanted them to still do the job.

They were prompt and nice to deal with. I thought the price was reasonable. We got a flyer from them in the mail so I jumped onto their website and asked them to contact me for a bid. I didn't hear from them for a week so I picked up the phone and called them. Immediately, I got hold of them and scheduled to meet them the next day so it was great; that was all prompt. I don't know why I never contacted back about the website deal. Maybe if they could glitch in their website. However, I will definitely use these people again. I am very pleased with them all the way around. I don't really have negative to say other than that was a little bit odd. I probably wouldn't go to their website again to ask for contact just because it didn't work.
Description of Work: I've used Primate Tree Care LLC. They came out and removed some trees that were leaning towards the house. They were problematic, they were leaning over the driveway and towards the house. Some were dead and some end up falling so there were some trees that needed to be removed and taken down.

We had Primate Tree Care out again this year after they did a great job clearing another section of our woods last year. The owner and crew were all very professional and very hard working. They cut and chipped the buckthorn. They also logged and stacked the downed trees for us to use for burning. We have and would recommend them again.

Justin and company were super punctual. He showed up on a weekday evening for the quote and then was at our house the next morning at 7:30am. His crew was professional and quick - they completed the job by lunchtime and left no mess to clean up. Justin really knows his trees. We're transplants to the area and have really appreciated the effort he takes in explaning the local flora and fauna to us. Additionally, if he doesn't have an answer to any of our questions, he researches and calls us back. Highly recommend and he and his crew are doing further work for us in a couple of weeks.

Primate responded very quickly, showed up on time for our appointment, and brought in the lowest bid of the three companies. I spent a bit of time asking for educational background from the two owners--neither are certified arborists. I selected one of the other vendors because of my prior experience with them, their years of experience, and the cerfication of their employees. When one of the owners called me to follow up on the bid, I expained I selected another vendor, and he angrily replied it was a total waste of his time, and why didn't I use them because they were the cheapest bid? I tried to explain I wasn't necessarily looking for cheapest, but best quality since my removal had an extremely large white pine that could knock several other trees down or hit my house if not cut down properly. I would probably not ask them for a bid in the future.

[Member Name Removed] - I wish you would be more honest in your review. You told me you didn't hire us because you had used the other company so many times in the past, and while I did express my disappointment I never became angry with you. YOU NEVER MENTIONED ARBORIST CERTIFICATION AS A REASON FOR NOT USING US. For the record I am weeks away from taking my ISA arborist certification exam which I expect to easily pass. At most I would compare it to a single four credit college class, maybe. Its not rocket science, its tree care. Some people pass the exam with as little as two weeks of study. If you don't believe me go ahead and google "how hard is the arborist certification exam" and see for yourself. Also, as I stated to you during the estimate, we are qualified to remove any tree of any size over anything that needs to be protected. We have been to every kind of extreme weather event imaginable, and removed the most difficult and dangerous trees out there thousands of times. Your trees were just a normal day for us. And while we carry the same high level of insurance as the largest and most successful companies in the state including the one you chose over us, and while you obviously have the resources to look at our reviews and confirm my claims of skill and experience, and while I took extreme care to give you the most fair price I absolutely could in order to earn your business, you still chose to hire someone else because "...I've just done so much work with them in the past. But I'll call you with some more stuff in the future." So I responded "Why? I have the same insurance, have the best price, and guarantee your satisfaction or you don't pay and you still wont hire me anyway? It seems like a huge waste of my time." I stand behind that, if you want a free estimate, I deserve a fair chance to get the job. According to you I never even had a chance which makes me wonder why I was using precious and hard earned resourses to give you a bid you woulden't consider anyway. If you would have told me your apparent real reasoning for not hiring us, I would have told you "Ok, I'll have that (arborist certification) in a few months so next time give us a call and we will save you some money." If that was the case I would feel I had lost the job "fair and square", instead of feeling like you were never really considering me to begin with, and feeling my time had been purposely wasted. We run one of the best tree companies in the twin cities, our work is outstanding and that can be confirmed both here on Angies List and the many other well known review websites everywhere. We take great pride in our jobs, our skills, and our hard work. For anyone to infer we are unqualified for any reason is of great concern to us, and I will always point to and defend our good reputation for fairness and quality. I do consider this matter settled. They were in the neighborhood and going door to door looking for work. They gave us an estimate and we agreed to the price and the work. They were to tree branches on mature trees and cut down a couple of trees. The estimate priced to leave the wood and brush but would cut the trees and branches into manageage pieces, aprroxiate 4 feet. That way we could clean up the area. And the mature trees were cut to be manageable for us to handle. They performed the work within a week. They came to get their money and see if the work was okay. We discussed that the wood we cut to big to manage. The basically cut the trees down and left it. They stated that the estimate didn't state that but they usually put that on the estimate and would come back and cut the tress in smaller pieces, it wouldn't take long. The ower would have a team come out over the next two days so we paid the money due. They failed to come back to finish the job. We have learned a lesson don't pay until all the work is done propertly. We didn't bother to contact them again. We would not recommend them, and won't call the again for additional work.

Customer im sorry if you did not percieve what we left to be manageable. we did cut them into four foot sections, which was more than your invoice which said "leave lay" entitled. we completed exactly the work that was contracted or we would not have gotten paid. we will not and do not do extra work just because you should have made better judgments on the way you would have liked the debris handled. not to mention you folks were after the cheapest most cost effective price which we made possible with a level of professionalism you would not find cheaper any other place. but i guess this is the criticisms well take from people who want the best but dont want to pay for the right way the first time and take shortcuts because they think they can handle it, but then come to find out you should have hired the professionals to do the whole job from start to end because you couldnt handle it. maybe next time pay professional the price they ask instead of beating the price down to a bare minimum and then wanting more because you made a poor decision.

The process for working with this company was very easy. Their responsiveness to the initial call for an estimate was unbelievably quick. As a matter of fact, I actually reached one of the owners on the first call. He came out the next day to do the estimate which was a very detailed one. The prices quoted for each work request were more than reasonable. The crew arrived to do the work on the day that had been set up. They went about the job very professionally and did a great job of hauling away and cleaning up. They had to take down the tree while protecting the large lilac bush which was underneath it. They were able to do this with no harm to the lilac. They subcontracted the stump grinding portion of the job and were quick to follow up to make sure this was done. My husband and I were very pleased with the whole process and the final outcome. They are hard workers, very professional and personable and obviously make customer satisfaction a priority. We highly recommend Primate Tree Service. Thank you, Justin and Matt!

I have had them before and they are back today and I am very pleased with them and their work. They are great communicators, they ask a lot of questions and give us answers for the questions we have from them. Their clean up is great, even for the big jobs. They don't charge you until they are completely done with the job and you approve it before paying. I think that speaks for the type of company they are.
Description of Work: They are working on some very tall pines in our yard. They are trimming some as the branches that have dried over the winter. Plus they are cutting down two of the trees that are just about dead. They are trimming approximately 10 trees. Some of the trees are 100 ft. tall. They are very nice contentious guys that are safety oriented. We are very happy about the price that we are going to pay.

We found Primate Tree Care on Angie's list. we contacted them and they responded within a day. Justin came to do an estimate and was right on time, very friendly and professional. He spend a good amount of time really assessing what was involved in doing all of the work, and he also explained how and why they do certain things (get the power lines dropped, rope off certain branches so they don't fall onto various structures, etc). He asked if we were OK with a few divots in our yard if they let the branches fall to the ground. He explained approximately how big they'd be, and he was right on. He also explained when and how to trim our elm tree, and was open to doing part of the job in the fall if it got too warm to safely trim the elm when they did the job. Primate's estimate came in right in line with the other 2 we got, and was even a bit lower on some line items (I requested he detail each piece of the job so we could pick and choose what we wanted to get taken care of now - it turns out we did it all). Matt came out on a Monday, right on time, however wasn't able to do the work that day because he said he didn't know he needed to have the power company drop the line. He was friendly and professional and rescheduled for the next day. Tuesday Matt and his crew showed up right on time, the power company came to drop the line, and they went to work. They were careful, professional, and VERY hard workings. They certainly worked well as a team. Our backyard is not easily accessible (you have only one access spot and have to go down a fairly steep hill) and they manually took out all of the debri with carts and dollies. No power tractors - just pure manpower. We offerred them the use of our lawn tractor and cart, but they very nicely explained that could cause a liability and thanked us for the offer. I was able to sit on the deck with my 2 year old daughter and watch Matt climb around the trees like a monkey and wasn't worried about them using foul language or innappropriate comments. It was very enjoyable. the whole team was friendly and responsive to my questions and all had a good sense of humor. They had people come pick up the large pieces of wood and asked if we were OK having it stay on our front lawn until the next day. Matt explained if we were not, they'd be sure to get it out that night. We didn't have a problem with leaving it there. Matt called the next day to let us know that the person picking up the wood thought he'd be able to do it in the morning, however was unable to, and would be here to pick it up in the evening. Again, Matt offerred that if we didn't want to wait, he'd get it taken care of asap. The guys worked until about 9pm and did a FANTASTIC job of clean up. My yard was cleaner than if I'd have done it! they were going to call to come back to do the stump. Matt called to make sure the wood on our front was gone, asked if we were happy with the clean up, and said he'd probably be doing the stumps on Friday. They came on friday while we were at work and did the work. They ground the stumps down 6" and left the shavings (per our agreement). matt called the following Monday to see if we were happy with the work - which we were - and to get his final payment for the stump removal. We inquired as to how far down they ground the stumps, and Matt assured us that it is the norm to do 6" as we will only need 2" of black dirt to plant grass. He also said if we found we were unable to level it out, he'd come back and grind them further. I don't think we'll need that, but it is nice knowing he will do that if requested. Overall, it was a great experience and we will definately refer them to others and use them for future needs. The only area we recommend they work on is Justin's knowledge of what deals/coupons they have listed on Angies list. When I brought up the coupons during the estimate, Justin stated that he wasn't sure what they had on the page. I also then called him after the estimate and reminded him that one of the offers was 10% off. he appeared to be a little frustrated and said he hadn't authorized Angies list to put that up. He said he needed to contact his partner Matt to come back and reassess to see if they could still do it with the 10% off. Justin called back the next day and said they wouldn't need to come out, he consulted with his partner Matt, and they'd be out Monday to do the job amd would honor the 10% off. I was a little concerned that maybe due to that, they wouldn 't do a good job, but I was pleasantly surpriced. They were WONDERFUL!. The other bummer is that they don't take credit cards yet, but I know they're working on it.
Description of Work: Needed to have 2 50-60yr old huge soft maples removed, 4 stumps ground, and two large trees trimmed. The two maples were rotted on the inside and we had some large branches fall over the winter, so we also had all of those that needed to be removed.

We were contacted by Primate Tree Care when they were in the area for some other jobs. As they offered a free estimate, we asked how much it would cost to remove some trees that we planned to cut down ourselves next summer. Their bid was very reasonable, so we decided to get the trees removed a year early by them instead of doing it ourselves. On the first vist, they cut down all the trees and did an impeccable job cleaning up. They were a little later than originally communicated, but it was no problem. By schedule, they ground out the stumps about a week later. They cut the stumps out deep and removed the debris (allowing for us to plant grass without too much worry of the grass not being able to grow above the stump). All in all, we were very pleased with our experience and would not hesitate to call Justin or Matt in the future.
Description of Work: Nine buckthorn were cut down and the stumps were ground out. Larger parts of the trees were cut into firewood, the rest was shredded and removed.
