After 2 brief phone conversations, I was referred to their designer. The designer asked me for my budget. I said I wasn't sure, but I had gotten a very open ended bid for $12k from a different contractor. I said I didn't give much credibility to the $12k bid, because it was too loose. The designer adopted the $12K budget and stuck with it despite my trying to explain I didn't think it was real. When the designer heard the bath had 2 vanities, she gave me a phone ROM of $30k. I said $30k was too much for the bath. The designer said that with a budget of $12K, all I could afford was "a guy in a truck and vinyl." We ended everything there.

Went great - everyone that worked on the job were easy to work with, responsive and professional. Cherie, our designer, had great ideas and really helped us make design decisions. Nate, the main carpenter was also awesome. He was easy to work with and did superb work. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone and would hire again

The people we worked with were very professional and skilled at their respective roles. Cherie, the designer gave us design options and budgetary impact associated with the choices. Mark, the on-site lead kept us informed and always made sure he let us know what was next and that he understood our expectations and we understood his. All including Aaron, the project coordinator, communicated well with us and made sure they understood our needs. There was never any contractor bad attitude about details. We may well have annoyed the h*** out of them, but they sucked it up and made sure our concerns were addressed. Of course they didn't roll over on every item, but they made sure we were satisfied with the outcome at the end of the day.

(member name removed), thank you for your honest review and thoughtful analysis. We are always concerned about making sure expectations with clients are realistic and understood by everyone involved. And, as you mentioned, there are times when we do “push back” by raising concerns, but we do so only to protect our clients where aesthetics, functionality and value may be at risk. I’m glad your experience was so positive. Tom Myrick Director of Marketing & Client Relations

Failed to show up for an appointment. When I called to inquire where he was, he stated he was still at his office. it's a shame he lost a bid because he couldn't simply be on time. He clearly doesn't respect my time. I can only imagine how my project would have went.

After having made repeated attempts to contact [Member name] by phone and email without success, we have little choice but to respond publically with this factual, point-by-point reply: We do in fact care very deeply about keeping our promises to clients regarding appointment times as well as every other aspect of the remodeling process. And because we care and want to make sure all of our client’s questions are answered, we sometimes end up spending more time than expected with customers in order to satisfy their concerns. That is what happened in this case. While we are both disappointed that we were delayed in keeping our appointment with [Member name], our salesperson reports a different series of events than what has been posted here on Angie’s list. As phone records prove, he in fact called [Member name] first to let her know he was running 10-15 minutes late due to a longer than expected client meeting. He was not calling from his office, but from his vehicle. I have no doubt [Member name] remembers it differently, but getting the facts right is very important when it comes to reputation. Be that as it may, she is correct in one fact—we didn’t make the appointment on time. For that we are very sorry. Try as we might, we will be the first to admit we are not perfect. However, we want to be clear that our failure to keep the appointment wasn’t because we didn’t respect her time. In fact, it is because we respected her time that we called her to let her know of the slight delay. And, because we respect everybody’s time, we could not end the previous client meeting until we had answered all of their questions. If the meetings were reversed I have no doubt [Member name] would want to be treated with the same respect.

They did not cover furniture initially, so the furniture ended up being filthy from dust generated from putting in the new flooring. When I asked why the furniture had not been covered, I was told they usually do, but in my case, they hadn't. I had to pick out stain color 3 times because they did not keep track of my choices, and then they still ended up installing the wrong color trim (white instead of brown stain). The paint job was poor. The painter tried to get out of painting inside of the closets. He ended up not even doing one full coat in the closets as the old color shows through in some spots. There were other painting issues as well. I was told the quality of my walls was not good, thus the poor painting result, yet the prior paint job did not look bad. The whole experience was not a pleasant one, and while they tried to make up for some of the deficiencies on the project, I don't feel that they did enough to make up for all of the problems. I think that the cost of the project was excessive considering the results.

As the owner, I appreciate (removed member name) concern and do apologize for an experience that was not our normal client experience. A new but "experienced" project manager who had been running his own remodeling company for 7 years came on board with all the right credentials and kept reporting that internally that everything was great, when it was not. He was soon released and I am truly sorry about the early lack of project managers attention and extended timeline as this is definitely not our normal experience. Our normal client experience can much better be evaluated at www.guildquality.com Regards, John Murphy, Owner

Since we were doing 3 bathrooms. It took a while especially the plumbing . The plumber left quite a bit of mess which the lead carpenter cleaned up. The plumber did not connect the master bath toilet correctly so we had a leakage into our kitchen. Also the plumber left a piece of equipment in the floor of the bathroom which was found when they took down part of the kitchen ceiling to fix the leak. The rest of the subcontractors were very good especially the tile people. They did an amazing job on the tile work.

We first talked to them at an Expo. Nobody followed up with us. We had to call them back. We got delayed. Then, they came out and gave us an estimate. The guy seemed really nice. I heard sometimes If someone does not want to do a project, they overbid it. The company we went with gave us a lower price. He was a very nice gentleman though.

[member name removed] said that they used us but then said they went with someone else. We gave them a budget based on many assumptions as there was no plan or specs completed. Just based on initial broad brush ideas so we are unsure of how "expensive" can be determined. Of course when Angie's list employees go trolling for feedback, they are not always accurate. Just that C-D's seem harsh from someone you don't work for even if a phone number was recorded w/ 2 numbers transposed. Sorry.

Very happy with the project and quality of the work. Workers were pleasant, efficient and professional. Having never undertaken a similar project I really appreciated the assistance I received from John Murphy in designing the project, picking materials and colors, etc. He actually made it kind of fun. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone considering a remodeling project.

Remodel master bath with new tile floor, vanity top, soaking tub, toilet, fixtures, lighting, and mirror - painted cabinets in master bath - and constructed and tiled a very nice walk-in shower in a limited space. I really liked the way they put the cabinets in. The guy was very precise. He was right on. He did a good job. Everything was level. It's really nice. We have lots of outlets. They also worked really hard on my sink. At that time he had done a lot of country sinks. Each sink is done individually. So, they had to do the cabinetry around it. He did a really good job on the install and working with the sink. They didn't make the cabinets - they installed them. They are a good company. They were recommended to us and they did a fine job.

The project went exactly as planned. The demolition of the existing kitchen began as planned and the project completed before the contracted completion date. The site superintendent from Murphy Bros coordinated all activities with other crafts and subcontractors as needed. Murphy Bros's sub contractors and vendors were all capable and professional. The quality of the sub-contractor and vendor work was excellent. The sub-contractors seemed to know the scope and schedule for the project. The arrived ready to work and their work was completed without delay. The quality of all the work was excellent and there was very little rework. The inspections by city inspectors all were completed without a hitch. The designer remained active during the project double checking to see that things were going as planned and clarifying any design issues. She was available to assist in picking out accessories such as light fixtures. She was available to review any possible changes that were considered and worked with us to evaluate a change from design, cost and schedule perspectives. Communication via e-mail or phone was fast and easy. We stayed in our condo throughout the remodeling project. We maintained use of the refrigerator and microwave oven. All of our requirements were accepted and worked around by Murphy Bros. We are now enjoying our newly remodeled kitchen and the improvements that we desired. We will certainly recommend Murphy Bros be considered for similar work and will certainly talk to Murphy Bros when we undertake another remodeling project. The team formed between the designer, ourselves, and the construction group led to a successful remodeling project, meeting everyone's expectations, and a great kitchen.
Description of Work: Murphy Brothers Designers and Remodelers were contracted to remodel our kitchen. We live in a high rise condo building. The appliances were relocated to improve the work space and work efficiency. The traffic flow into and through the kitchen was revised to steer traffic away from the work space. The peninsula was changed to allow seating facing windows and to accommodate large counter height stools. Kitchen appliances were remove, protected and stored on site, and reinstalled. Murphy Brothers were the general contractors. They provide design, project management, carpentry, labor, and painters. The cabinets, counter tops, hardwood floor, plumbing, and electrical work were subcontracted to their preferred subcontractors and vendors. We initially met with Murphy Brothers design consultant, Gail Jacobson. We worked out the design and an estimated cost. Murphy Brothers wrote a short form contract and we began the work. There were many iterations on the design and many checks and "what if" schemes. The final design layout met our needs and wants. We met with the cabinet makers and the counter top vendors and chose the style and type during the design and estimate development. It is important that the final design be right and what you want as it is the basis of the contract, cost estimate, and the project schedule. (Note that the cabinets and counter top selection make up nearly 50% of the kitchen costs.) Upon contract signing the cabinet building was put into the vendor shop production schedule and Murphy Bros prepared an overall schedule based on the cabinet schedule. We kicked off the project with a meeting to review and clarify the logistics and to introduce Murphy Bros to the condo management. Following the introductions, Murphy Bros assumed all coordination with the building management. It was seamless and the building management were thankful and complimentary to Murphy Bros for there work. Murphy Bros applied for and coordinated obtaining the necessary city work permits and coordinated the visits and sign off by city inspectors. During the project there were a couple of minor scope adjustments and these were agreed and handled without incident. The contract administration throughout the project was handled professionally. At project completion we signed a Substantial Completion/Warranty Acceptance form with noted exception items. The exception items were completed expeditiously and with the same quality workmanship as the kitchen itself.

Murphy Bros. performed remodeling and repair work to my husband's former home to prepare it for sale. We could not be more satisfied with the professionalism and level of service of John Murphy and his team. With respect to our initial consultation, we were provided prompt service and a reasonable estimate for the work. We were also given many options to pursue and informed of how those options would impact our overall budget. Murphy Bros. finished the basement by installing a large walk-in closet, drywall, lighting, carpeting and painting the finished room. It was beautifully done and nearly convinced me not to sell the house! Murphy Bros. also repaired some ceiling cracks and smoke damage in the ceiling of the remaining house. It was impossible to see where the repairs were made and the ceiling of the old house looked like new. Throughout the process, we were not presented with any change orders and were given a high quality of work at the price we expected. I have recommended Murphy Bros. and Stone Makers of MN, an outdoor hardscape company also owned and operated by John Murphy, to my friends and colleagues. I have received nothing but positive feedback from those who have chosen to work with John and his team.

This was our very first large scale project and I found this company to be absolutely wonderful. There was so much to navigate through - appliances, flooring, center island, lights, fixtures - I was overwhelmed. But Cherie had a way of breaking it down into manageable pieces and bit by bit it all was selected and came together. They were never late, they were very neat and very responsive to my emails, questions and any concerns I had. I would email Cherie or Aaron in the early morning before work, leave a key if they needed to get in and when I came home that very day, whatever I had requested was done. They did a great job of containing all the dust from having to bust up a ceramic floor and made having a gutted kitchen for 2 months as easy to live with as possible. The kitchen is beautiful and everyone comments on how it turned out. We were so pleased that a year later we did our master bath and used Murphy Bros. again. They were that good.
Description of Work: We met Murphy Bros. Remodeling at the Home Show and contacted them for a kitchen renovation about a month after that. We had a great first interview with Cherie and she spent the next month helping pick out what we needed for our update. We put in bamboo flooring and had to have a ceramic floor taken out, all new appliances, lighting, Cambria counter tops, sinks, and back splash. They also had a carpenter build us a large center island with Cambria top. The kitchen was painted as well.

One year previous to this we had Murphy Bros. redo our kitchen. We were so pleased that a year later we had them back to do the bathroom. Cherie was once again our designer and she helped us navigate through the complex selection of tiles, faucets, tubs, etc. Once again she broke it all down into smaller pieces for selection and that made it easier to move ahead on a timely basis. I can only say good things about everyone we worked with. They were neat, on time and always kept us up to date on the time line of when each step would be completed. We had an issue with our mirror selection that was not their problem - I chose a company that kept telling me my mirrors would be in and they took 6 weeks past the promised date. Murphy Bros. installed temporary mirrors and when the new ones came in, they came back out and rehung what should have been there. This was above and beyond the scope of what the project called for. But I had no confidence in the mirror company so Murphy hung them for me instead - as a favor. I have kept in touch with the company and whenever I have a question, I get an email back the same day. I am so pleased with all of their work and the wonderful people we worked with. I will have them back again for whatever project comes our way.
Description of Work: We had a master bath gutted and updated. We put in a new tub, shower, sinks with Cambria top, toilet, mirrors, lighting and painting. The large ceramic floor had to be busted up which makes for quite a mess and all of the elements of the bathroom had to be dragged out through our bedroom and living room - and we have white carpets!

We ask questions that pertain to such things as a customer's budgeted investment range and whether or not there is another decision maker purely for preparation purposes. If we know there is another decision maker, we can work to accommodate for multiple peoples' schedules. We can also know if someone is authorized to make decisions. If we know that a customer is planning a $15,000 kitchen remodel (as opposed to an $80,000 remodel), we can do our homework to find the best products and design to fit that budget even before we meet with that client. People who contact our company are assured that we provide the best quality products and services for their money.

I LEARNED ABOUT THEM THROUGH THE HOME AND GARDEN SHOW AT THE METRODOME IN JANUARY. I SIGNED UP FOR A KITCHEN REMODEL 6-12 MONTHS OUT, RECEIVED A CALL FROM ESTIMATOR IN FEB. AND HAD TO TELL HIM IT WAS TOO SOON. I EMAILED BACK TO REQUEST AN ESTIMATE, RECEIVED AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT EMAIL, BUT HE NEVER CALLED BACK AFTER THAT!
