Description of Work: We called for advice and possible service. He guided us through the process. We needed to get the job done asap so weren't able to wait for his services. He followed up with us to see if we needed any help, but we had completed the job. He was extremely pleasant and helpful. When we need masonry services in the future, he will be the first one we call.

+ -1 moreThere was damage to the brick fireplace that needed repair but also an issue with an ill-fitting gas fireplace insert. Mark noticed and addressed issues (like the ill-fitting insert) that none of the other masons that we consulted mentioned. Given our unique situation trying to bring back an old fireplace and make it work with a modern gas insert, Mark worked very closely with us to come up with a design that would be functional and also make us happy for years to come. We traded pictures and sketches to work out the overall design and he even dropped off bricks so we could place them and actually see what it would look like. When it came time to do the work, Mark was even willing to come on a weekend so that we did not need to take time off work. Overall a good experience and wonderful outcome.
Description of Work: Re-furbished a 100-year old brick fireplace that had been covered with tile by a previous owner.

+ -1 moreDo start earlier in the year on chimney projects. Don't be concerned about asking too many questions or calling a pro right from the start to make sure the job is done well.
Description of Work: I called Marcus for an estimate on how to patch and weatherize my now defunct chimney. He came over the same day that I called and checked over the chimney for me. He laid out some options and we discussed the possibilities. Ultimately we decided to wait on this project, but Marcus was extremely helpful, supportive, and patient with all my questions.

+ -1 moreThe job as described above went flawlessly. Mark is a true Masonry Artist who takes pride in his work and completed all the above described tasks in less time than we had expected. He cleaned after himself after each visit and the brick work looks like that of a newer home.
Description of Work: Mark did the tuck-pointing of the entire brick veneer of our 1920's vintage Southwest Minneapolis Bungalow style home. The brick work consisted of the ledge about shoulder level clear to ground and parts of the chimney. Where some of the brick was chipped away or missing, Mark mixed color matching masonry and restored the brick complete with the hatching pattern of the existing brick. He carefully removed and replaced downspouts where necessary to work behind the bricks, removing the soft and crumbling mortar before tuck-pointing each needed joint. He also pointed out that we had a badly chipped cut stone which is part of the front step and told us he could replace it. When he found out the replacement stone's thickness wouldn't match, he suggested cutting the existing stone and flipping it over and patching the bottom side. His suggestion saved us $75 for a new stone and the color match of the patching masonry was done so well, you couldn't hardly tell it was a fill. He also applied a masonry caulk on a crack in our stucco and matched the stucco pattern so well that it is undetectable. He additionally caulked the chimney crown and provided pictures of the before and after work. After all the work dried completely he sealed all the brick and masonry with a sealer that will prevent further deterioration.

+ -1 moreThe plaster on the wall at the bottom of the basement stairs was completely falling off, due to a poor installation a couple of years ago with another 'handy-man' type company. The repairs needed covered approx. 3 ft by 8 ft, with a small notch for one of the steps. Marcus did a very thorough and completely durable re-cementing of the whole wall, using an attached grill framework on which the cement/concrete could attach itself solidly. This was a great way to do a permanent repair for this wall. We are happy with the way the wall looks now, and we feel confident that it will last for decades now. There was no mess left behind and all the materials were removed completely. Great work!
Description of Work: We needed Marcus to replace the falling-off plaster on the wall at the bottom of the basement stairway.

+ -1 moreSome bricks blew off the chimney during the October windstorm. It was mid-November before I got around to getting bids for the repair work and I was afraid it would not be able to get fixed before the winter. Marcus was very fast in getting back to me with a bid and with doing the work when the weather warmed up enough (during the next week, luckily). I was very happy with his responsiveness, work and price.

Some stones were loose and when it rained, I had water leaking down through the steps and into a small part of my basement that is directly underneath them. Marcus gave me an estimate of $500 - $1000 and thoroughly explained his process of removing the stones to determine the state of the concrete structure beneath them. If the concrete under the stones was in good shape, the actual cost would be at the low end. But if the concrete had significantly deteriorated, he would need to first repair that before replacing the stones and the cost could be at the high end of his range. He did indeed find some deterioration and my actual cost was $650. Marcus is extremely knowledgeable and I appreciated having someone with his expertise perform the repairs. I didn't want just a cosmetic repair job that would need to be redone again in 2 years. He cleaned all the stones after relaying them and ensured the treads are at the proper pitch for water run-off. My steps look fantastic!

Description of Work: Called and left him a message asking him to call me back regarding getting an estimate over a week ago and he never returned my call. I guess I made the mistake of saying it was a small job. I would suggest putting a minimal job requirement (in dollars or project, etc..)on your site if you're not interested in small jobs.

+ 0 moreMarcus did an excellent job. I would recommend him and would use his services again. He was professional and responive throughout the project, from bid to completion. He came out to see the project the day after I called, showed me what needed to be done and related features on the roof that he would protect, produced the bid within a day (complete with pictures of similar jobs) and told me when he could begin work. His bid was also the lowest of four that I received. As the time to begin approached, he notified me of his schedule and came on the day he promised. He began work on a day that ended with a strong rain storm. Marcus protected his work and the house against the storm and finished the work the next day. He did extra work without charge: i.e. reset gutters and roof flashing that were near the chiminey but not part of the project. Finally, he cleaned up and left without a trace that he was there except for a rebuilt chiminey.
Description of Work: Marcus repaired the top seven courses of brick for my chiminey. Bricks were falling off the back, top of the chiminey. Marcus replaced missing brick, rebuilt the top few courses and tuck pointed need spots down to the seventh course of bricks. He also reset nearby gutters and flashing. Finally, he grouted a section of wall in the house that had a large crack.

+ 1 moreVery nice job overall. The work got done quickly and efficiently. He and his partner cleaned up nicely afterward. Absolutely no complaints--these guys know what they're doing. Other than a slight 'exchange' of words between him and our neighbor, when he used their driveway to turn around, the job went great.
Description of Work: Marcus replaced some missing and crumbling bricks near the top of our chimney. He also re-did the top section of the chimney with concrete, which re-diirected water away from the chimney shoulder (where it had also caused deterioration. And he re-did the shoulder with stone.

+ 0 moreMarcus came to meet with us just before he was leaving town. Made it clear that he could either fit us in before he left (depending on weather cooperating) or after he got back. Nice clear expectations laid out so there were no surprises. We walked the entire outside, he showed me the areas we knew were in trouble. We discussed back door which had the added cosmetic issue. Marcus gave me 3 options there with price points. He showed up when he said he would . ..and after pulling out the "grout" (i don't think that is the proper word for outdoor foundation but I cannot recall anymore) we had a TORRENTIAL downpour that night that had not been predicted. He called to check on us and stopped by to make sure we were well covered w/ plastic tarp. Great cleanup, left us the info on the products he used. His backdoor solution was quite artistic--he is a true professional.
Description of Work: Tuck pointing and repair of foundation of house with built in 1895 with concrete foundation that was turning to dust before our eyes. Repair included inspection and work around entire perimeter, 2 walls (north and east) were significantly in rougher shape. Removal of all areas that were no longer working, tuck pointing to restore integrity. As an added bonus, artistry to make the back area (near door) look as it did in the past.
