Description of Work: Marcus Wise repaired a tall brick retaining wall between our front yard and sidewalk. He replaced numerous bricks, split several more in half and applied them to the front of damaged bricks, tuckpointed and mortared where necessary, and sealed the whole wall. It retained its original character (90+ years old) and feel, while being completely repaired and restored. We were delighted with his work.

Description of Work: Marcus patched various areas on my 1915 home where the old stucco had cracked or fallen away, and he did an excellent job. The color matching was wonderful, and he has a great eye for detail so his work blends nicely with the original stucco. He showed up when he said he would, did the job in the time frame promised and left the place spotless.

He was very nice to us. He came over and we talked about the work. He gave me a bid. He didn't need the money till the end so that gave me some comfort. He was professional and friendly as well.
Description of Work: They worked on my front steps and took down a pertaining wall. They did tuckpointing on my stone steps and repaired a broken step.

A very good experience. I appreciated his efforts to keep the cost down while still doing a quality job. I'd hire him again.
Description of Work: I have very old stone steps leading to my house. One was patched with cement when I bought the house. It and the stone beneath it began to crumble. There were other smaller stones also in bad shape. The stone is old enough that it is thicker than today's regularly stocked stone. Marcus managed to find some that was the right size to replace my damaged stone. This saved quite a bit of money. Another contractor bid to replace the steps instead of repair them, because of the difficulty of finding stone the same size. Marcus did the work quickly and the steps are now quite solid and look very good.

The exterior walls of my 100-year old home are made from sandstone block which had been painted. On 50% or more of the blocks, the paint had cracked and/or peeled and, in some areas, the sandstone had eroded a little. Perhaps 10% of the mortar joints had cracked seriously enough that they needed to be redone. I had some difficulty getting bids for tuck-pointing because most masonry experts told me that the paint needed to be removed before they could accurately estimate how much it would cost to repair the masonry. None of the masons except for Marcus offered to give me a bid for both removing the paint and repairing the masonry. We agreed at the outset that his bid for removing the paint ($800) would be firm and that his bid for repairing the masonry ($400) would be revisited after the paint was removed. His bid for removing the paint was competitive, so I asked him to proceed with that work. After the paint was removed, he revised his bid for repairing the masonry to $700. As this price was still competitive with other bids, I asked him to proceed with the repair of the masonry. He replaced all of the cracking mortar joints and applied a thin layer of colored cement to fill in surface blemishes (where several coats of paint and/or the top layer of sandstone had cracked and fallen away). I plan to paint the masonry again (as estimates I got for completely removing the paint were cost-prohibitive and all of the bidders had doubts it could actually be done without damaging the masonry). I am very happy with the results of Marcus' work. Once it cures, the surface is ready for repainting. While we never actually met face-to-face, Marcus kept in close contact by telephone regarding scheduling the bid and the work.
Description of Work: Removed loose paint and cement from exterior masonry facade of 100-year old house, ground out loose masonry joints, filled joints with new mortar and resurfaced masonry with cement.

Marcus was prompt in responding to my email and came out to inspect the steps when he said he would. He was able to match the stone wonderfully and used as much of the existing stone as he could. Marcus and his assistants fixed the steps speedily and even patched up some additional stonework on the house. There was no mess left behind and I am very pleased with the end result.
Description of Work: I needed to repair the stone front steps as water was getting under them. I did not want to replace them with concrete but to match the existing stone. The flat stone seemed in good condition but the risers were very cracked.

He was out of town when I first called and I had decided to wait until spring after getting a higher bid elsewhere, but then he called and arranged to come over within a week to give me an estimate. It was another week or so before he could get over to do the work, but that was fine with me. He came back that weekend to make sure that the cement dried ok. I felt his price was reasonable and I was glad that he was focused on maintenance and not redoing the whole chimney.
Description of Work: On the flue from my furnace, Marcus replaced the clay at the top of the stack, applied cement and a cap to waterproof the chimney.

Marcus made several suggestions to keep the cost down, i.e. rebuilding rather than tearing out and starting new. The work looks very nice. He has an eye for placing stones so they'll look good.
Description of Work: Marcus rebuilt several stone walls, repaired stucco exterior walls, tuck-pointed and repaired two chimneys, repaired a concrete wall in a basement well and repaired the brick foundation.

Marcus and Dominic were prompt, fast, professional and, most importantly, really good at what they do. Our finished chimney is far more functional, solid and better looking than the chimney we bought from the previous owner. Marcus is one of that rare breed of contractors who actually cares about your house and what he's doing to it.
Description of Work: Ground out old tuck point mortar on chimney from the roof line up. Also removed cemented on "screen" from top of chimney. Then tuck pointed chimney, extended flues, poured a cap and attached screened rain guards to top of flues.

They returned my call the same day after leaving a message. Marcus was going away for a few days but his partner Dominic came over and gave me an estimate. I mostly dealt with Dominic on the phone to set up a time and to talk about the job. He was professional and courteous over the phone and the same in person. They got at my house a week and a half after the estimate. The came and left within one day. They appeared to do a thorough job. They cleaned up great after they left and everything looked good. Afterward Dominic gave me a run through of what they did and was patient with my questions. I was satisfied with the job and their work. The finial price was actually 50 dollars less than their estimate. I will likely call them again or recommend them to friends if the need arises.
Description of Work: I have a mud room that "floats" on the ground. Where the concrete met the ground, a big hole in the concrete appeared. They fixed this hole.
