Overall, Meredith and her team do great work and at a reasonable price. It took them about two weeks to do the yard clean up and install the chilton stone path. Meredith met with me several times to go over the plan and ask questions about what I wanted. During the work I decided that I wanted some larger stones for part of the project and she was very accommodating with my request. They had significant work to do to clean up the yard and made it look easy. My rating of 'B' for quality is in relation to their not burying the roots from my cherry tree that were exposed during the rain garden excavation. They were very careful to not cut any of the long roots but when I pulled the paper back that was under the mulch layer to plant new plants, the roots were on top of the soil so I buried them myself. Overall, they did great work and I would hire them again.

Description of Work: Meredith provided a very detailed bid in advance, which helped me decide how much work to have done. They worked along one side of my house/garage/porch/deck to clear out debris, remove weeds, put down weed barriers and add a good layer of mulch. They also planted shrubs, constructed two small retaining walls near the deck stairs, and laid bluestone stepping stones coming out from the deck stairs. They worked efficiently and cleaned up the area at the end of each day. Apart from one visual effect (how a retaining wall "interacts" visually with the stepping stones) that I'm not wild about, I'm very pleased with their work. I appreciated Meredith's good communication and consultation with me throughout the process.

Description of Work: Revived three planting areas doing deep weeding, planting and transplanting dozens of native perennials, and putting down weed barrier and mulch; also removed stump and cleaned up a couple other areas. |Meredith always open to evolving plans (changed work based on the state of some beds and actual times needed), and to staying within my budget limits. Very professional, clear, quality communications and work.

Local Roots Landscapers are extremely knowledgeable and got me totally native plants, which I wanted. I've used them a lot. She's very informative. They do a good job, at a good price.

Merideth and her crew were a great pleasure to work with! They listened well to our ideas and offered good advice about our options on both practical and esthetic issues. We got a detailed drawing of the proposed design and plantings. The proposal included a detailed breakdown of the costs. We are very pleased with how the project turned out. So pleased, we're having them come back to do the front yard this spring.

Description of Work: I called for some simple landscape improvements, and Meredith of Local Roots educated us and talked us into installing raingardens with native plants and some large rocks. We are very glad she did this; we love the gardens, they are low maintenance, and they help with containing stormwater, which is beneficial to the Mississippi River near where we live. She was very knowledgeable about raingardens and native plants, and the installation was very well done. Now we are planning to have larger areas of the yard turned into raingardens with native plants. Estimates were careful and accurate, communication generally good, and the project was completed well. The only problem was that although the contract was signed in early spring, it was late summer before the work was begun.

We liked that it was a small, owner run company. We worked directly with the owner of the company, and her team did all the work. They were good at what they did, and very knowledgeable.

Local Roots handled our project from start to finish. Meredith's design for our very steep and almost unusable back yard was both elegant and realistic. In executing it, she and her team were hard working, respectful and very professional. They were a delight to work with. The quality of the work done and the thoughtful approach taken were of the highest order.
Description of Work: Local Roots rebuilt three stone walls and added a fourth in our very steep, very large back yard. They created a new path (with a switchback!) with over 25 stone steps and mulched the levels, in preparation for native planting next spring.

Although the bid was higher than the competitor, Meredith drew us a detailed plan that was creative and intriguing. We felt like Meredith really listened to what we wanted, and presented a plan that was responsive to our needs. They started work in a timely manner, and worked nearly every day until completion. We hit one major snag - the upper terrace of the patio could not be constructed as planned without additional reinforcement. Meredith consulted stone experts and an architect before presenting her recommendation to us. She agreed to split the additional cost. They worked primarily by hand, and did not bring any heavy equipment. Therefore, the job takes longer than it might take another company. But they only worked on this job, and we never had to worry about chasing them down at another jobsite. Meredith was easy to go ahold of and easy to work with.
Description of Work: Local Roots rebuilt a retaining wall by our garage, built a stone raised garden, constructed an upper and local terrace patio and path, built a retaining wall in the front yard and did native plant landscaping in both front and back yards.

Alas, it didn't go. I came to feel that they were kind of vague, slow to get going, perhaps a bit inexperienced.
Description of Work: I called them about landscaping the boulevard in front of my house. They called back after a couple of days and we arranged a time to meet. The person came at the appointed time and was very pleasant but a little vague. He finally said he would work up a proposal and send it to me in a couple of weeks. That was too long a timeline for me. Within that timeline we found another contractor, concluded the bidding process and contracted for work to be done.

We are really pleased with the final result and how everything looks. I had to play a bit of phone tag initially but after I met with Meredith everything went smoothly. It was just Meredith and one other landscaper which I liked (rather than a big number of people) and I didn't mind that it took a bit longer than a bigger company. We had several ideas come up during the process (the brick path, for example) and Meredith was very flexible. We wanted to get rid of grass and hostas and have lots of native plants, and create a sanctuary for the birds in our yard and we are very pleased with the job Local Roots did. In my opinion, they would be a great choice for anyone who wants something similar. I don't have photographs yet but their website photos give a really good picture of what you can expect.
Description of Work: Local Roots landscaped several areas of our yard - installing a front yard prairie planting with stepping stones and new shrubs in front of our house, a woodland planting in our backyard with berry bushes and shrubs, a brick path between the two yards, and a savanna planting in our alley.

Working with Local Roots Landscapers was a positive experience overall. Meredith did a great job listening to my needs and wants; and she understood the challenges I was facing with my urban back yard (drainage, lots of shade, etc.). Local Roots Landscapers specialize in native plants and environmentally friendly landscape design which was a big draw for me. For example, they created a rain garden in my backyard which I did not think was possible because of the shade. They also do really nice stone work for a reasonable price. Local Roots is a very small operation; so if you expect the work to done in a couple of days you will be disappointed. The same people who manage the project and do the paperwork are the same people who actually do the work. My experience with Local Roots was far better than the larger landscape companies I initially interviewed. They did not seem interested in listening to my needs or executing on my vision. Rather, they were more interested in hitting their sales quotas and generating revenue for their expensive marketing campaigns.
Description of Work: Design, site prep, stonework, and planting. The site prep work included removal of existing sod, adding compost, rototilling, excavating a rain garden, transplanting existing plants, laying down biodegradable weed barrier, and mulch. The stonework included installation of an 80 sf flagstone patio, 35 linear ft. of stone paths, installation of bolder clusters to planting areas, and constructing a low stone wall using glacial boulders. Plantings included a shrub and 100+ woodland perennials.

Meredith chose beautiful stone and fitted it expertly. We spent a lot of time discussing width, types of stone, and general design. Meredith brought along samples of different stones to help me decide. The work (by hand) was done in less than 3 days. The yard was cleaned up after they left, and I had some leftover stone for other projects. Meredith was more expensive than other estimates I had, but I had worked with her before and I knew her work. Also, my yard in an old St. Paul neighborhood is such that all materials have to be carried in by hand--no bobcats or mechanized equipment. I learned the hard way that some bidders don't think of this ahead of time, Meredith already figured this in. Local Roots does a lot of native plantings and Meredith was willing to share knowledge with me on this topic.
Description of Work: Meredith installed a 2.5-foot flagstone path in my yard, extending from back door to the alley. This work involved removing some existing concrete, also installing 1-2 steps every so often along the path and some small boulders for erosion control along the steps.

I wanted to match the new stone work to an existing retaining wall but the field stone was out of my budget. Meredith was able to use cheaper mixed field stone and boulders and still complement the existing stone work. She transformed my very vague ideas into a pleasing, balanced product. She informed me of potential issues due to weather, stone availability, complications with removal of the existing concrete. She did a great job.

Thea was my contact person. She returned phone calls promptly, showed up when she said she would, accurately assessed the time and difficulty of the project. I originally asked for a bid for additional work including mulching and converting a part of the lawn to tillable garden, when I decided to do that myself, Thea provided tips on the best places to get my mulch & compost. Local Roots specialty appears to be stone work and I will definitely contact them for such jobs in the future. I'm rating the price as ''C'', but in truth I don't know if the work would have been done cheaper by anyone else.
