Jeff was the main guy and he installed Onyx around our tub, he was amazing. He was an expert at measuring and didn't rush the job but got it done in the time promised. We would definitely hire them again. I am so happy we chose them over the other bids we got, even though their bid was higher. Overall everything went very smoothly. Mary H.

Onyx is absolutely a specialty of ours. We are the oldest and the largest Onyx dealer in the Twin Cities, so it is no surprise that this project and our process impressed you. One of the biggest benefits of an Onyx shower system is that it installs VERY quickly. Most bathroom remodels take a fair amount of time to deliver, but we love doing Onyx projects, because the customer is always blown away by the speed of the install. Thanks for your business.

I was away during work days to allow ease of access - this is my only bath. Demo appeared to go perfectly. After leaving for a week, I did not get updated progress pics; only concerns and work order changes for more drywall needed than was expected $230ish. Upon return, I was expecting a complete project. I discovered their employees failed to lock my condo over a weekend, even when they had all keys. The plumber had to be called essentially at the end of a work day to install my fixtures. Grout seams were not perfect, needing some touch up. Grout was discovered on a lot of flat tile fields. That grout needed to be removed with a spray chemicals. Tub makes cracking noise when standing inside, even with spray foam sent under the tub. PM apologized for allowing my residence to be unsecure, but this was a big deal and it would take more than an apology to overlook this lack of attention to details - as seen in the grout.
Description of Work: Remove 1980's fiberglass tub and surround. Replace with cast aluminum tub, rework water supply for new fittings, prep and tile surround from tub to ceiling. Attach new plumbing hardware.

Hi [member name removed], I want to echo Damon's apology for leaving your door unlocked over the weekend. Really discourteous and unprofessional. Several of my people have been scolded and told that if that happens again it will become a termination type discussion. I am very sorry. As for the job portion of the review, we finished this project in a week and one day and needed another day to do the punch list items. This is a fast turn around given the fact that this property is a second story condo (tough to be efficient when you're up and down stairs to cut tile) and given the fact that we encountered a tub that had several layers of drywall to compensate for the opening being too large. This fix cost us a day and a half and we only charged "our cost" to frame and furrow the walls of a condo (which are never square). I can't apologize for the time it took, this is on schedule. We took unique, creative and ultimately very helpful measures to address the tub creaking, but unfortunately, like every floor in the entire building, we were not able to eliminate it entirely. I wish we could have been more helpful here, but we were dealing with an existing condition that was outside the scope of our contract. The tile job: Thank you for posting these photos, I doubt this is the best job we've ever done tiling a shower, but then again...this tile job is emblematic of a typical K2 job. The joints look great! Large format 12x12 tile (which is the most popular), never fit perfectly into a 30,32 or even 36 inch opening because the outside edge needs to be trimmed with bullnose. This forces the installer to cut and fit the tile instead of simply laying it. Maybe you would have preferred smaller tile, but this is how it is supposed to look. This may be a case of having unrealistic expectations, this tile looks great from my perspective? As per the grout that was discovered on flat surfaces, that is called "epoxy haze." We over build every bathing system we remodel by using the best grout product you can buy. We always use this type of grout because it never needs to be sealed, it is totally pore-less and will not break down over time like the grout that most bathrooms get. It is however more difficult to do the initial clean up, epoxy haze feels like a sand paper grit is on the tile surface once it dries. It is invisible, but you can feel it. Sometimes, because we can't see it, we have to come back a second time to remove the residue. It is a cost that we are willing to incur in order to give our customers a superior product. We could use cheap grout and these types of call backs wouldn't happen, but in our experience it is worth the extra effort to do epoxy. I hope your next service provider can meet your expectations and I wish you well. Thank you for your business. Chad

I was very impressed with K2 throughout the design and construction process. My project was a remodel of a hallway bathroom which is used as the primary in my house. The project came about as somewhat of a surprise when tile damage occurred and made it apparent that an extensive project would be needed. I appreciate the K2 team's assistance working with my timeline. The project was finished on time and looks fantastic! During the initial design meeting, Steven made the process extremely simple and easy. During one visit, we were able to take measurements, discuss key elements, receive pricing, and contract to start the project. (It helped that I had tile tentatively selected prior to meeting). Damon was the project manager that assisted during the project and was very accommodating and informative. He was responsive whenever I had questions and even met to assist with selection and sourcing of an alternate material when a supplier issue arose that could have delayed the project. Damon kept everything coordinated and on target. The carpenter/tiler Dave that did a significant amount of the work was respectful, hard working, and did a fantastic job. The work area was left clean and my home was respected. I'm extremely happy with the new bathroom and could not have had a more positive experience with K2.

We had a great experience with Jon and Chad at K2. We thought they were responsive and fast, and Chad was great in working with us on the design phase. Jon and crews were great in terms of flexibility in working with us as design alterations occurred, which are inevitable in a big job like this. We had two bathrooms demolished and rebuilt with beautiful tile, cabinetry and trim. We were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable price and quality materials. An issue with a defective vanity top was handled promptly and professionally.

My partner Jon augmented the final floor plan for this project. It was a complete reconfigure of the master and an "opening" of a dark 5x13 bathroom. Both rooms turned out great and Jon still brags about the changes he proposed in the initial planning phase of this job. Thanks for being so open to our ideas. Your job benefited greatly from it...and thank you for your business. Still interested in having us build your new home...?

The person that showed up really didn't want to do what I wanted and also they didn't want to take much notice of the architectural drawings that I had paid for. I thought well if that is your kitchen okay but this is mine so...next please! Maybe they just didn't want the job which is their choice but then they should have told me and not bothered to come over. They also wanted about 50% more than the company I finally went with.

It is not uncommon for prospective customers to have ambitions for their project that do not match up with what K2 can deliver for their budget. When this happens at K2, we find ourselves in the difficult position of having to be the "bearer of bad news." This can be a particularly difficult pill for prospective customers to swallow when they have already paid another firm to design the space. Generally speaking, the customers who end up having the best experience with K2, allow our designers to create a unique plan with a realistic budget in mind (as opposed to the other way around). Once we've had an opportunity to create the design in collaboration with the homeowner, assemble a thorough scope summary and finally perform a detailed value analysis, our customers have every ounce of information they need to make an educated decision about who to hire. Let us guide you through OUR process and we can guarantee positive results. Best of luck.

K2 Bath renovated the showers in 2 of the bathrooms in my house, the main bath upstairs and another bathroom in the basement. My first mistake was deciding to renovate both rooms “back to back”. It wasn’t like one of them was totally finished before the other one was started. Instead, one was started first but they were both completed on the same day more than 5 weeks later. So I ended up with dirt and disruption in all 3 levels of my home plus the garage for the entire time and I was tired of it before the halfway point.Tile selection: K2 works by bringing samples to your home and picking the products during the sales call. I really like the tile in the basement bath. The tile in the main bath upstairs is OK, but I think I could have picked out something with a better appearance and color match if I had spent more time on it and visited tile stores myself.Shower doors: The shower door in the basement bath would be very nice if it was 5 inches taller. It is 65 inches so everybody over 5 feet 5 inches needs to duck to get in and out of the shower plus water sprays over the top of the door onto the bathroom floor. The upstairs bath is a custom installation with glass on 2 sides of the shower. It is a nice quality of glass and hardware.Tile installation: The tile installation is generally good except I am a bit concerned about future leaks in the upstairs bath where the shower connects to the existing tub deck. K2 needed to do some repair work in this area, but now the edge of the tile sticks out past the tub deck on one end of the wall instead of being recessed completely beneath the tub deck.Fixtures: I originally contracted to have shelves recessed into the shower walls and handheld showerheads on slider bars. It wasn’t possible to have recessed shelves because in one room it was an exterior wall and there was a major pipe in the way in the other room, so I switched over to corner shelves in both showers. Neither shower is very large and K2 did a poor job of fitting the slider bars and corner shelves into the available space. The plumbing is in the wrong place in both showers due to lack of planning and poor communication between the plumber and the carpenter. In the main bath, the shower hose runs into the corner shelf and in the basement bath, the shower hose runs into the on/off valve.Cost: Pricing is soft, so definitely negotiate before signing anything. My original contract also included replacing the whirlpool tub and toilet in the main bath. But halfway through the project, the project manager said the tub was a custom size and it would be $800 more than the quoted price. I didn’t think it was worth the additional cost, so I canceled that part of the order. I had a detailed list of what was included in the project, but just the total cost. I would recommend that you get the cost broken down into separate line items because K2 did not return nearly as much money as I was expecting when canceling the tub and toilet. In the days after my project was completed, other companies had Angie’s List Big Deals for significantly less than what I paid.

We were a bit handcuffed on this project due to budget restraints. Remodeling is not science, its art. It is often necessary to make game time decisions and when an investment in a bathroom remodel is made, the least expensive way to accomplish the task is ONCE. Nobody likes unexpected existing conditions, but when they pop up, it is always worth the extra dollars to do it right the first time. I am pleased with the out come of this job given the parameters.

K2 did a great job from start to finish. the design Guy Steve came out to our home. Shared with us about K2 & what they provide.he measured up our project we disscused price of the project, then brought in samples of every thing it would take to complete the project. from tile, vanity, counter top, plumbing fictures, mirror, lites, fan, ect every thing that was great because we could see what it would look like. we agreed on a price. put money down. they did all they said they were going to do. ordered all that was needed. went over every detail from where they would be working. what times were ok for us to have them there working, how long the project would take. they followed thru. Jeff our project carpenter was awesome. he worked hard to keep the project on track. made sure we were happy with all of there work. addressed any concerns we had. make sure to ask to have him on your project. Thanks again Jeff!!!! also Darren our project manager. did an awesome job. most projects like this have diffrent exptations. he worked thru the issues & thats one of the most important things. tied up any loose ends. K2 Bath and Design remodeled our guest bathroom recently. We knew we wanted to update the 1970?s bathroom but didn?t exactly know what that meant. The sales person quickly came up with a plan and presented a few options for us. He kept it simple and we liked that. He helped us feel comfortable with the whole process and we decided to go ahead with the project. Demolition of the old bathroom revealed that more work and a different shower floor pan was needed. K2 came up with a fix and ordered the new shower pan on a rush basis. In the mean time the shower wall base was rebuilt and the plumbing was done in preparation for the shower installation. The project was delayed for a short time but resumed in just a few days. Work progressed smoothly after that and was completed in a week or so. There were a couple of minor issues that we spotted but K2 came back early the next day to fix them. Overall, we were very pleased with the work done by K2 and the final result. It was a professional job all the way. K2 did an excellent job of communicating to us throughout the process. The carpenter showed us what he had done at the end of each workday and kept us involved in any decisions along the way that needed to be made. The workmanship was excellent. There were no flaws evident at completion. We highly recommend this company.

Thank you for the review. Regarding the price tag on this bathroom, this project was exceedingly challenging given the unique space restrictions and unusual roof line. As usual, K2 found a solution. In addition to re-configuring this bathroom, we also re-textured the 2nd level ceilings. We were super happy with the finished product. Obviously when we re-configure a bathroom and move the plumbing around, there are going to be some additional costs that need to be accounted for, but all in all it was money well spent. There aren't many companies that would have been equipped to handle this project, but it was perfect for us. We really enjoyed working for you Rob and wish you the best. On October 28th we met with Tom Jackson who would be the Production Manager for our Remodel. At that meeting Tom reviewed with us our designand contract that was set up with Jonathan Honerbrink the salesman. He then reviewed with us our expectations and how that fit into the capabilities of K2 and what would happen and approximate time frames. The weeks passed quickly and we found our self?sat Thanksgiving with a flooring situation that needed to be resolved. Chad Kerrison the owner of K2 Bath along with Jonathan Honerbrink and Tom Jackson met with us and we worked through the flooring issue together successfully. We were really impressed with how Tom Jackson kept theremodel moving forward. To get a majorremodel completed successfully and with great quality in just over 60 days fromstart to finish; we were blown away. K2 is fortunate to have Tom Jackson as a member of theirteam. He was instrumental throughout our remodel by running the job as if he were conducting a symphony. From the first week of demolition through the end of the project, at which time Tom showed us his talent and abilities as a finishing carpenter performing top quality work in the installation of our baseboards, re-stalls on our ceiling beam and rod iron railings and miscellaneous applications. When we started this project we knew nothing about the remodeling process. One contractor just told us to go to Menards and start looking for tile. We didn?t even know where to start. Then Stephen, from K2, came to our house. It was like he held our hands through the process. He told us of our options and then showed us samples. He had beautiful tile samples for the Bathtub/shower wall as well as for the floor. He had a book of cabinet styles and he had wood samples of the cabinet. The Master bathroom would have the existing footprint, but everything would be removed and rebuilt. It was torn down to the wall studs. We had a new bathtub, toilet, cabinet with granite counter top, over the john cabinet, matching wall mirror and all bathtub and sink hardware. They tiled the bathtub wall and floor with a beautiful porcelain tile. The shower area had a beautiful decorative tile added. In the Basement bathroom we had a sauna torn out and the existing one piece shower removed. Again everything was torn down to the studs, but this time one of the walls had to be rebuilt to create a closet where the sauna had been. The shower drain had to be moved and the entire shower area was hand built with beautiful porcelain tile with decorative glass and tile inserts. A custom glass door was added to the shower. The entire floor of the now large bathroom was tiled with the same beautiful tile. There is a new toilet and a walnut cabinet with Silestone counter top. There?s also a matching mirror and a Silestone ledge under the window. The only things we had to do was to buy the light fixtures and the paint. The costs of the bathrooms: Master Bath - $15,700 Basement Bathroom - $16,925 Brandon was the carpenter who did all of the work except for the plumbing and electrical. He is a master at tiling. There is lots of tile and it is absolutely beautiful. These bathrooms look like they should be in a showroom. I highly recommend K2 for your bathroom remodel.

We got a significant curve ball on this project, with the additional work being added, but thankfully, this customer was on board with our process and allowed us to guide the trajectory of the job. Without their trust, this project would have been extremely difficult to accomplish. It never fails...we do this stuff everyday and when we are given the opportunity to execute our process the results are fantastic. Thanks for your business.
I initially met with Stephen Clark, who went through the design & contracting process with me, My initial design concept turned out to be too expensive, and Stephen was very good at working with me to revise the design to fit my budget. He was also very good at helping me pick materials. He then turned the project over to a project manager, Dave, who scheduled and coordinated all the sub-contractors who actually performed the work. Dave was very cooperative about adjusting the work start date to fit my schedule. The actual work went pretty smoothly. The main sub-contractor, Jason Collins, was on the job when he said he would be, was very careful about keeping the work area clean, and did his best to minimize the mess in the rest of the house. There were a couple of minor glitches (e.g. a sub-contractor showed up early one morning without prior warning; materials were delivered directly to the house without letting me know in advance), but only one major inconvenience: I had to wait about 2 weeks after the rest of the work was complete before the glass shower door was installed. In the interim, they put a shower curtain in place so I could use the shower - that was an acceptable work-around. Dave and Jason were very quick to take care of punch-list items - and there weren't many. The project was completed about 60 days ago, and I just noticed a potential problem with the drywall tape. I have notified K2 Bath design and they are in the process of correcting it. At this point, I am very satisfied with the project's execution, and my overall experience with K2 Bath Design. I know that I might have paid less for the project with other contractors, but I would have had to do a lot more of the "general contractor" work myself, e.g. purchasing materials and arranging delivery. It was worth it to me to pay slightly more and have K2 Bath Design handle everything for me.
Description of Work: Designed master bathroom renovation project and served as general contractor for the actual renovation. Thanks [member name removed]. The guys are super proud of your project. Do you have any photos of the work that you could share with the Angie's community? I have some on my website, perhaps you could post them here.
Overall the project turned out great but as with any remodeling project we did face some challenges. The final end product exceeded our expectations. The project started with a great first interview with the project designer and estimator. This was an impressionable visit and Jonathan was extremely helpful in providing guidance and making suggestions as my wife and I had differing views regarding some aspects of the remodel. The initial experience working with Jonathan became one of the differentiating factors that lead us to chose K2 Batch Design and Kitchenside for our remodeling project. Our project manager kept us informed on the scope of work scheduled and I often spoke with him every morning during the project. He listened to our concerns and worked with us to make sure that everything went as smoothly as possible. When problems were encountered he spoke with us to discuss our options and answered all our questions. Tom was very easy to work with and made us feel comfortable. The workmanship and quality of the work performed by the subcontractors and employees at K2 and Kitchenside was excellent. The craftsmen were professional, friendly, trustworthy, and conscientious about the inconvenience that a remodeling project causes. Some of our challenges during the project: Schedule... We had an overall plan but no actual project schedule. The actual work plan developed daily based on the progress and availability of the craftsman. For example, during the demolition we were caught off guard and unprepared for the amount of progress that was made during day one. We were expecting some trim molding and carpet to be removed but were not expecting that the underlayment would be removed in the kitchen area. To remove the underpayment a saw was used to cut the old flooring into removable sections and we had not completely covered our furnishings. The saw dust blanketed everything. For future projects I will make sure I receive a copy of a proposed working schedule before signing a contract. This is one of my takeaways from this experience. A surprise that actually proved to be beneficial for us was the installation of the hickory hardwood flooring. The project called for a pre-finished hickory flooring, but after installing about 20% of the floor the subcontractor called the project manager and told him that he did not feel we would be happy with the finished product and the durability of finish. The project manager called me and we met with the subcontractor to discuss a proposal and schedule. The subcontractor suggested a unfinished hickory flooring with a oil based finish. This turned out to be an upgrade and I was impressed that we were not asked to bare any expense for the the additional labor and materials required to provide a stunning floor that has become a show piece for our project. After agreeing to have the unfinished flooring installed, the subcontractor had new material delivered the next morning and by the end of that day had removed the original product and started installing the new floor. Overall this change caused a ten day delay in the schedule but was well worth the wait. Scott at Woodchuck Flooring did an amazing job and treated our project as if he were performing the work in his own home. We have received numerous comments on how great the finished floor looks and the quality of the work. I was extremely impressed with how K2 and Kitchenside listened to the concerns of the subcontractor and absorbed additional expenses to insure customer satisfaction. One unexpected change in the scope of work was the installation of the ceramic tile in the laundry room and powder room. We had contracted for a diamond pattern installation. What we received was a standard grid pattern arrangement. The project manager called me to inform me that a mistake had been made and personally took responsibility. He asked if we would accept it as installed or if we wanted it to be removed and installed per the contract. After looking at the grid pattern design we decided that it was acceptable and the job was finished. Our experience with K2 Bath/Kitchenside and all of the subcontractors has been positive and the entire process started with research on Angie's List. Thank you to everyone who worked on our project and thank you to Angie's List for pointing us in the right direction.
Description of Work: 1) Remodeled powder room (ceramic tile, granite countertop, new toilet, light fixture sink, faucet and bathroom accessories). 2) Installed ceramic tile in laundry room. 3) Kitchen... installed granite countertops, modify the cabinet above the refrigerator to accommodate larger frig, added a base cabinet, installed pull-out shelves in existing pantry cabinet. 4) Installed new hickory hardwood floors and installed new trim modeling in the kitchen, dining room, living room and foyer.

I'm extremely happy with the work and the way they kept me up to date on what was going on and when. Inspections were done professionally. Dave the carpenter was EXCELLENT. He did tiling and installation of vanity and painting and the work was very neat and professional. They cleaned up after themselves and were very polite. I cannot recommend them enough and am looking for more projects to do now that I have found a reliable contractor.

Thanks for your business and sharing your experience with the Angie's List community. Let us know when you identify the next project. We will be all too happy to work for you again!
Bath project started on October 1. The goal was to be finished by the 30th. Both upstairs and downstairs standard size bathrooms were being done. There were some delays due to materials, some delays due to changes we initiated and some delays due to miscommunication. The tear out and installation of fixtures and tile went off without a hitch. We had a few miscommunications with the finish on vanities and some trim work, but K2 took care of everything to our complete satifaction. Their employees were great and made us feel comfortable having them in our home. The final product is beautiful and K2 found us some unique touches which are absolutely beautiful. The best quality of K2 is that they have the integrity to own their successes and mistakes. After the project finished we felt good about everything, from the choice of the contractor to the finished product.
Description of Work: Remodel of upstairs and downstairs bathrooms. Provided design suggestions, replaced all fixtures including toilet, bathtub, vanity, ceiling fans and lighting. Installed tile flooring, Onyx, granite countertops, and custom built vanities. Repaired drywall in downstairs bathroom.

Master Bathroom was completely remodeled. Tile was removed with new tile placed in shower, walls and over vanity. Decorative tile was added, which looks very nice. New toilet, sinks, faucets, countertop, mirrors and vanity added. Walls were painted Job took 10 days to complete, and I was out of town most of that time. It was very nice to come home to a new bathroom. Provider was easy to work with, and had good ideas and suggestions. Very glad that I updated my bathroom, I have had many compliments on it, especially the tile work.

Everything went great from the initial call for an estimate all the way through the process to completion. Stephen was great to work with in providing an estimate. He really drove home the sale quickly, but worked with us on the price. I was given an estimate of about six weeks for all the materials to arrive, and that was pretty much spot on. Dave, Brandon, and the rest of the crew were great to work with, especially Brandon. (Apologies if I'm spelling some names wrong.) Once they started work it was an everyday effort until it was completed, and we weren't inconvenienced at all. As an aside, I was in between jobs when most of the work was done, and my job search wasn't hindered at all as they kept the doors closed and openings taped with plastic to reduce noise and the mess. I'm sure it would have been easier for them if I hadn't been around during the work. The tub and onyx are beautiful, as is the new tile flooring, and Brandon did a masterful job on all these. Back when the house was built in '87 or '88, some rather puzzling decisions were made, and we had to work through at least one of those - the electrician found that our ceiling fan wasn't properly ventilated and would require some extra work. He detailed what should be done and estimated a cost to fix, which he actually bettered. Originally a pocket door separated the bath from the master bedroom vanity. The door was cheap, and the thinner sheetrock for the pocket made that wall space virtually unusable, even for a towel rack. I hated it and researched sliding barn type doors and wanted one of those as a replacement. I know this represented somewhat of a challenge for Dave and Brandon, but they found the materials and implemented it with flying colors. Dave pointed out correctly that the door is easily the center piece of the bathroom, and that says a lot, since they did such a great job on everything else too. They kept the mess and inconvenience to a minimum throughout. They did have to use the garage during the project, and we just moved both cars out for convenience, although I think we could have kept one in. Everyone involved communicated very well with me. Phone calls or questions were returned or answered promptly, generally the same day. I would highly recommend K2.
Description of Work: Partial remodel of master bathroom and adjoining master bedroom vanity area. Removed old tile in both areas and installed new. Tore out existing tub/shower enclosure and replaced with tub with onyx surround. Removed wallpaper, patched walls, replaced ventilation fan and sink, tub, and wall fixtures. Installed an sliding barn type door between the bathroom and vanity.

20. K2 scheduled installation of the new shelves for 8/7/13. Theses shelves will be secured ?within? the tiles via slots cut into the tiles and bonded with grout. This is the process that should have been implemented the first time. 21. The contract specifies that all permits are included in the price of the remodel. Owner queried the city, mid July, on the status of an inspection relative to the remodel. The city had no record of an issuance of a permit. On 7/17/13 K2 committed to personally secure a permit. On 9/12/13 K2 requested owners allow a plumber access to the remodeled bathroom. Owners agreed but have not hear anything from K2 or a plumber since. As of 10/21/13 a permit had not been issued by the city to K2 or to a K2 subcontractor for the remodel. 22. Owner installed a new exhaust fan and venting prior to the remodel. Afterward there was a white residue under the roof exhaust vent. Might the exhaust fan need to be replaced? 23. Owners provided AC for the K2 personnel while performing the remodel and subsequent major rework activity. The furnace filter was replaced immediately after completion of major rework. Should the return air vents require cleaning? 24. Owner (wife) spent 4 days cleaning the house after completion of all major rework. 25. A permit was finally issued 10/24/13 by the city to a K2 subcontractor. Inspection of the remodel is scheduled for Monday 10/28/13. 26. The total duration of the small bathroom remodel from contract signing to Monday 10/28/13 has been 32 weeks, 157 working days (adjusted for Holidays) and assuming a successful inspection. Not even close to the 6 week material and 5 day labor quote for completion. 27. Per contact, owners were to provide final payment to K2 upon remodel completion. A check for this final payment was provided 6/7/13. Recommendations that were shared with K2: K2 should identify all other customers who had shower shelf installations using a surface applied adhesive only. These customers should be made aware of possible adhesion failure resulting in possible personal injury. K2 should use their contract as the baseline for all customers and any change should be documented and agreed upon with approval signatures of K2 and customers to assure amendment concurrence. K2 should provide an adequate air cleaning device to capture airborne dust and dirt to protect their employees and their customers? residence. K2 at a minimum should provide a dust barrier to adjacent rooms to minimize dust/dirt migration. This would prove to be an excellent sales/marketing tool to benefit the customer. K2 should establish workmanship quality expectations and provide training if necessary to quantify these expectations. The problems associated with the above documented remodel could have been avoided had K2 performed all tasks correctly the first time through. K2?s response and heroics to the array of problems, errors, shoddy workmanship could have all been avoided had all tasks been done correctly the first time. Would I use K2 in the future or would I recommend K2 to prospective customers? My answer would be NEVER. This has been a remodel from hell.
Description of Work: Remodel a 6ft x 8ft bath 1. The K2 bath contract with specifications was signed 3/15/13. Material availability was quoted at a 6 week lead time. The remodel of the small 6’ by 8’ bathroom was quoted at 5 days. Remodel started 5/28/13, 10 weeks from the contract date. Materials were available in advance of the 5/28/13 start date. *** The extended remodel start date caused a one month extension for garage rental for owner’s car. 2. Owners provided their residential garage for material storage and work space for K2 personnel as stated by contract. 3. On day one owners needed to ask that the floor protectors be shaken out before being laid on the carpet. The cloth floor protectors were exceedingly filthy and over the course of the remodel additional dirt was laden in the carpet beyond the areas supposedly protected. As a point of reference the carpet had been professionally cleaned on 1/13/13. *** The carpet again needs to be professionally cleaned. 4. Owners provided bathroom facilities, other than that being remodeled, for K2 personnel so K2 would not need to rent a portable unit. 5. Contract specified bathroom floor demolition. The floor was not removed and replaced but was run through with screws to anchor. *** This action was a monetary benefit for K2. 6. The shower doors as specified by contract were to be textured glass, pattern 62. The doors supplied were clear glass. *** Owners accepted the down graded doors without enumeration. 7. The shower frame on the East wall was installed very noticeably out of plumb. This was intended to mask the sight of the much darker decorative glass inlay protruding beyond the frame. Owner expressed objection on both counts. K2 then disguised the glass tile with an application of silicone. The dark glass remained noticeable and the frame remained out of plumb. On 8/12/13 K2 hired a subcontractor to adjust the door frame to plumb and to conceal the dark glass tile under the frame. He succeeded, however, he was concerned about the quality of the sliding glass door hardware. His concern was realized when a shower door jumped off the track only two days after his repairs. K2 then agreed to replace the door frame and doors. On 9/9/13 a new shower door frame and doors were installed. Again the doors were clear glass. The subcontractor mentioned that the new door system is far superior to the original. However, There has reappeared a color mismatch at the glass tile location. *** Owner will correct this problem. 8. The contract specifies Daltile SA55 3/8 inch decorative glass tile. Having lost faith in K2 owner obtained a sample of SA55 and found that SA55 is not installed. K2 claims that 3 glass samples were provided for approval. Owners do not recall 3 samples but thought SA55 was being confirmed. 9. The shower water control valve was installed incorrectly with the mix reversed. K2 repaired the mix from hot to cold. Water now mixes from cold to hot as it should have initially. 10. The bath vanity was installed by K2’s vanity supplier. Two oversized holes were cut into the vanity frame, on site, for the one drain pipe.*** Owner fabricated a cover and installed the cover onto the frame to conceal the error. *** Owner needed to develop and install stops in the hinges of the vanity’s left door to avoid contact and collision with the bathroom entry door. 11. The contract specifies a 42 inch long vanity. City code requires a 15 inch clearance from the outboard side of the vanity to the centerline of the toilet. The vanity installed is 40 ¼ inches long with a 16 inch clearance. The contract should have specified either the vanity length as a “to be determined” clause or 41 ¼ inches long. 12. K2 removed the existing light fixture in the bath and hard wired a temporary socket with bulb. The bulb was in contact with the, thought to be final coat of paint and scorched the paint.*** Owner needed to repaint. 13. The thought to be final coat of ceiling paint above the shower enclosure had grout or caulk affixed.*** Owner needed to repaint. 14. Debris from the remodel was to be hauled in 3 business days after presumed remodel completion. It was nearly 2 weeks before the debris was removed from the owners property. *** A portion of the dumpster bag was located on the lawn. Owner with the help of a neighbor dragged the bag onto the driveway to avoid killing the lawn. 15. The transition strip from the bath floor into the linen closet was diagonally sheared by K2 leaving sharp edges. The remaining transition strip and the carpet which was missing the transition was secured to the floor with gobs of silicone adhesive. This action by K2 was a safety issue and typified K2’s shoddy workmanship.*** Owner removed the remainder of the sheared transition, purchased a new transition strip and installed it correctly with screws and no sharp edges. 16. K2 was called back after installation of the vanity faucet for a water leak resulting in a puddle inside on the base of the cabinet. K2 attempted to find the leak but failed. Their response was “they couldn’t find the leak so they couldn’t fix it”. No further attempts were made by K2 to resolve this issue.*** Owner determined the leak was at the cold water feed line and the flexible hose connection. Owner tightened the connection and the leak was eliminated. 17. There was a cut in the Onyx supplied vanity top for which K2 denied responsibility and owners were assured that Onyx could repair it to look like new. Owners were assured that Onyx could repair in 3 days. The Onyx representative appeared 2 weeks later on 7/8/13 and determined the damage to be a non-Onyx inflicted knife cut and the damage could not be repaired to a “like new” condition. Onyx was to deliver a new replacement vanity top on 7/18/13, which happened as promised. Onyx also hired a contractor for installation.*** Owner (wife) was present when the vanity top was unpackaged and noted that a knife was used to effect the removal from the packaging. 18. The new vanity top was installed 7/22/13. The contractor found the following inadequacies with the original K2 installation: a. The was only a 3 inch bead of silicone on the vanity frame holding the vanity top in place. b. The gasket at the faucet to vanity top interface had not been installed nor was there sealant at this interface. c. The seam at the interface of the left splash panel to vanity top was sealed with clear silicone, not with the Onyx supplied color tinted silicone to match the splash panel and top. 19. Two shower shelves were installed by K2 directly to the vertical shower tile surface with adhesive. Shelf 1 fell Friday 7/12/13 and damaged the Onyx shower pan. After reviewing the situation K2 thought shelf 2 was secure. Shelf 2 fell Sunday 7/14/13, again damaging the shower pan in a different location. K2 contacted Onyx to effect the possible repair on the slightly used but well damaged pan for 7/30/13. The Onyx representative repaired the shower pan and admitted there was a slight difference in color. There is also a slight surface roughness at the sites of the repair.*** Owners weighted the shelf and found the shelf in their possession to be extremely close to 5 pounds. The outboard side of the corner shelves has a radius and a sharp edge. There are 2 significant chips in the shelf in owner’s possession. Had these shelves fallen while the shower was occupied there could have been serious personal injury. Owners sought advice from an individual outside K2 with 15 years experience installing tile and shelves and now selling same. His advice was that the shelves would not have stayed affixed to the tile surface with adhesive only. The shelves needed to be embedded into the tile wall structure. *** Owners by accepting the repaired shower pan instead of demanding a new, undamaged pan saved K2 considerable monies in material and labor expenditure. Replacement would have been a monumental job not only for the pan removal and replacement but also the replacement of potentially broken tiles adjacent to the pan within the shower enclosure and also tiles adjacent to the pan at floor level.

EXTORTION: This was most challenging customer service interaction I have ever dealt with. We were confronted by an abusive and unreasonable man, who vigorously whipped us without warrant on a number of ridiculous counts and excessively bludgeoned us on a handful of legitimate ones. We had to confront outright hostility with patience and respect. In the end I am proud of the way we handled it. As mentioned, there were a few legitimate warranty issues and in the end, the customer admits that we did everything that was asked of us to his satisfaction. However, for this customer, our heroics didn’t excuse the fact that the job wasn’t done correctly the first time. We agree to a point but as you will see, we had to draw the line at this next part. We were informed that a check for $3000 dollars and not a penny less would be the only thing that would keep him quiet about his experience. We rejected this proposal. We don’t pay for good reviews and we are not going to pay to prevent a bad one. The remodel (which we’d like to point out looks beautiful) is a service, the price for which includes a craftsmanship warranty and like all of our commitments, this warranty has been and will continue to be honored. We were open to a financial concession, but none would be considered under duress. He responded with this excoriating review. Of the 25 points that Mr. Henning enumerates, only a few have merit. I do not wish to minimize the warranty issues. They were real and called for immediate attention. However, in light of the 2000 word essay that Mr. Henning puked onto the internet, I am compelled to defend our good name and given the very few opportunities I have to use my writing skills in the modern world, I have to admit I am a bit excited about it. The following is our side of the story. Once you’ve reviewed our response, we ask that you go back and re-read this customer’s complaints and imagine what it must have be like working for him. 1 the estimated lead time on all of our projects is 6-8 weeks from the day OF THE WALK THROUGH. This is in our paperwork. The job started on time. 2 for every 1000 dollars our customers spend, we ask for a day of onsite work. This project took 8 business days to complete. It came in 4 days early. There was warranty work that needed to be performed, but the bathroom was up, running and fully functional on day 8 and has remained that way ever since. 3 We occupied the garage for exactly 8 business days. This is the first stipulation in our contract and is literally ¼ of an inch under the signature line. This was not a surprise. 4 As acknowledged by the customer, we used painter’s drop cloth liberally as we do with all projects to protect the home. If there is any staining or damage to the carpet, this is the first we’ve heard of it and the first time it has ever happened. 5 The customer allowed our staff to use his second bathroom during construction. This is standard operating procedure. Our carpenters are very aware of how important it is to respect this shared space in particular and it has never been an issue before today. 6 We did in fact tile over the laminate floor. There was no advantage to removing it. The customer was given the option of having it removed and expressed indifference. The tile installation is flawless. 7 During all of our remodels, our production manager, in an effort to deliver the most beautiful project possible, frequently makes design suggestions. Some of our most inventive work has come at his urging. It is a part of the job he enjoys and frankly, is very good at. Jon recommended a clear shower door to showcase the tile work. The customer not only approved the change, but EMBRACED this idea. 8 The original installation of the shower door was in fact out of plumb. We removed it and re-installed it promptly. The original shower door spec was a very inexpensive door and was included in the project at the customer’s request in an effort to reduce the project price. I am 100% certain that the customer knew exactly what he was getting when he authorized this product. The door in question is in fact very similar to the door that we replaced. I should have insisted on a higher quality product. Our shower door installer is a trusted friend and after re-installing the out of plumb shower door, he expressed concern about the quality of the door. Given the difficult nature of this customer, we authorized the installation of a significantly nicer door. We did this on our own accord. The customer was not charged for this upgrade. While the new door was on order, the customer broke the original. We didn’t investigate the cause because the decision to replace it had already been made. . 9 Jon brought the customer 3 different styles of mosaic tile (one of which was the original design spec) for their review. They decided on a tile that was more expensive than the original selection and Jon installed it. Again, Jon's design suggestions resulted in a free upgrade! 10 Yes, the cartridge for the Moen valve was installed backwards. If you ask any plumber they will tell you that this is really easy to do. We fixed it right away. It literally took 15 seconds. 11 We fabricated 2 professionally crafted openings in the vanity to facilitate installation. These holes had to be oversized. The supplies for the sink come from the floor and the trap comes from the wall. It is impossible to position the vanity without creating some “play” in the opening for the plumbing. This is the right and only way to do it. Yes, a 42 inch vanity was the original plan. However, code requires that the vanity maintain a 15 inch clearance from the center of the toilet. We achieved this by ordering a custom cabinet and top. These items cost more than was budgeted. None of these costs were passed on to the customer. 12 & 13 This customer could not help himself. He was over the carpenter’s shoulder the whole time. These paint touch ups were to be fixed per the final punchlist. He interfered with the job pre-maturely. 14 the debris was removed 2 weeks after THE START of the job (day 14). His writing implies that the baggster wasn’t cleared for 2 weeks after completion. This is not true. Additionally, the customer was given an option regarding the position of the dumpster. He chose the grass. He changed his mind later and dragged it into the driveway. 15 The “jagged edge” transition strip transitions the tile floor that we installed and an unfinished stud built linen closet in the bathroom. The customer insisted the day we executed the project that he “had” to have a portion of the project to do himself. I assigned him the task of finishing the inside of this closet. The exposed edge of the transition strip that he is complaining about is a part of that job. This line item is ridiculous. 16 During our 30 minute visit, neither he nor we could reproduce the leak. 17 Yes, we use knives to open boxes. And yes the Onyx counter top was scratched. WE pointed the scratch out to the customer and offered 3 corrective suggestions. 1-a free granite upgrade available in under a week. 2-a new custom Onyx counter top 5-7 weeks or 3-an Onyx technician to repair the top 2-3 weeks. The customer decided to have the tech repair the top. 18 Here is a blatant fabrication. This conversation never happened. 19 & 20 This is the line item that actually embarrasses me. Both stone corner shelves fell off the wall and damaged the shower pan. We have successfully installed 100’s of shower shelves and have never had this problem before. Following THIS customer’s step by step instructions on the proper installation method was extremely humbling. We bit our tongue and did it his way. The shelves unfortunately scuffed the shower pan. The options were a full shower replacement or have the Onyx tech repair the scuffs. Both K2 and the Onyx tech told him flatly that the repair process while really good, is not perfect. If he expected perfect then replacement was the only option. He chose to do the repair. 21 The permit was issued and signed off on by Eden Prairie. No construction permit was required, only a plumbing fixture permit. Fixture permits are inspected after the job in accordance with the inspector’s calendar. We performed this operation as directed by the city. 22 This one competes for the top spot on the ridiculous list. This customer wants us to warranty an exhaust fan that he installed. 23 & 24 100% containment of drywall dust is not even close to achievable. This is made crystal clear on our paperwork. If the replacement of a furnace filter and a thorough housecleaning are all that is required after a major construction project to put the house in order, than I call it a job well done. 25 Permit pulled. Why not mention this right away? 26 & 27 we started 10 weeks after the contract date. The project took 8 days. The rest of this ordeal played out over a 20 week period. Some of the warranty materials weren't available right away, but mostly, the customer was incredibly uncooperative with regard to access. He caused weeks of unnecessary delay. OP ED: We ran into a customer who developed a severe case of buyer’s remorse. The preceding is the thread bare case he attempted to build against us to leverage an unjustifiable discount. TAKE AWAY: At K2 we are fully prepared to go to any lengths to honor our commitments and are capable of dealing with extremely challenging circumstances with patience and respect. The bathroom is the most challenging room in the house to remodel and there are going to be issues. If remodeling wasn't difficult you wouldn't need our help. But, when trouble does surface, our commitment is to stand by our customers until every problem is met with a satisfactory solution. Certainly, we look forward to easier projects, but make no mistake about it, we are fully prepared for yours, no matter how difficult it .
