Houle Insulation Inc

Insulation, Drywall, Energy Efficiency Auditing,

About us

For more than 30 years, Houle Insulation Inc., a Minnesota based insulation contractor, has been re-insulating homes in Minnesota just like yours. A better insulated home is more energy efficient, comfortable and quiet. It will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat and cool your home, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by energy use. Houle Insulation Inc. specializes in re-insulating existing homes; sidewalls, attics, bypass sealing and blower door testing in the state of Minnesota. Blowing cellulose insulation into your walls and floors, and sealing attic bypasses can reduce high heating and cooling bills, ice dams and drafty rooms. Some other problems homeowners are faced with are frost, mold and water damage to ceilings. The discomforts of a poorly insulated home are often wrongly blamed on furnace and air conditioning problems when the actual cause is the insulation or installation of the insulation. You could save significantly on your heating and cooling bills by having attic bypasses sealed and insulating your walls and attic to adequate levels.

Houle was very punctual, professional, and personable. They laid tarps to protect our floors. They worked really hard in very tight, cramped areas and cleaned up well. Although we can't really see the work they did, we can feel it. Our house is much warmer!!! They also had all the paperwork ready for the energy rebate. Very thorough. The only bummer is they do not accept credit cards.
Description of Work: Insulted our attic increasing R-Value from 19 to 50. Attic insulating and air sealing as well as insulating recessed lights with boxes.

The project was handled by three men, all of whom were personable, professional and knowledgeable. They came to my door on time, at 7:30, and their trucks had been parked outside for 15 minutes beforehand. Before starting, they reviewed with me exactly what they would be doing, and exactly why it would be helpful. Throughout the day, they installed insulation in an upstairs area that had previously been ice cold and unusable from November until April. They worked efficiently throughout the day, and cleaned up very thoroughly when they were done (around 2:30). They even went the extra mile by trimming some pesky oak branches that were scraping against the roof. Just a short while after they left, the upstairs had already warmed up significantly, to a comfortable temperature. All in all, they did a terrific job; and although it was not cheap, it was well worth the expense. I can't imagine that there is anybody who does a better job than these guys.

Two men came to do the work on time, were professional, cleaned up and took pictures for my husband. We have noticed now that it is cold that we can keep our thermostat lower and still be comfortable so the furnace is running less. Our home FEELS more energy efficient now.
Description of Work: Added insulation to our attic, sealed the attic bypasses, plumbing, vent pipes and walls, light fixtures and wire penetration, boxed the recessed lights, replaced the narrow air chutes for 1988 with full width air chutes, cover the batting with tyvek, air seal the access. Reblow the attic to R-50 ( it was 25 or less and compressed) with Class A cellulose. Also insulated basement furnace room wall with spray foam.

We had an energy audit performed in July, 2013. The quickest payback was the attic insulation and rim joist insulation. We contacted 2 of the insulation contractors based on Angie's List reviews. The one we chose was Houle Insulation. They were not the cheapest, but they gave off a professionalism that the other company did not. Their bid was also the most specific. The owner, Arne, set a date and showed up on time with 2 crews. One for the attic insulation, one for the rim joists. They started at 7:30 AM and finished around 3 PM. The owner showed up later to see how everything was going. The rim joist crew finished before 11 AM and went on to another job. The attic insulation crew worked their butts off with just a few breaks. Their work was by far the dirtiest and hottest and they held up well. I would not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them to others. A first class operation. I got what I paid for. The post blower door and worse case draft test improved from 20 down to 12. More than the energy audit predicted.
Description of Work: Seal all attic bypasses. Remove and replace all air chute tubes. Wrap exhaust vent ducts. Build wood dam around attic access. Air seal the attic access. Reblow the attic to R-50 with class A cellulose insulation. Install R-20.7 (3" nominal thickness) closed cell polyurethane spray foam in basement rim joists. Perform a post blower door and worst case draft test.

Since our attic is rather difficult to crawl around in, it is difficult for me to say if they did everything. The big test will come this Winter to see if the heating bill goes down. I was able to check the knee wall from the garage and everything looked ship shape there. We originally had the estimate done in June. I called 3 contractors and Houle was the middle quote and they were the most detailed. We were originally going to have the drywall redone around the skylights, but due to time we decided that we can just put some drywall on top of the existing drywall. We scheduled the insulation work to be done in October. They arrived on the scheduled day and were done on time.
Description of Work: Installed new air chutes for our eaves, wrapped the insulated and wrapped skylights, built up the dam around the access door, and blew in insulation into the attack to R50. Insulated knee walls to R30 and wrapped. They also sealed the access door.

From the appointment time, to the actual installation date, these people showed up ON TIME, and were completely prepared. The estimate was higher than all other bids, but the Houle team provided more insulating solutions to solve our ice damming problem, and improve energy efficiency. Tarps & plastic were put down to minimize the mess, and cleanup was minimal for us. They were polite, and professional. We will definitely recommend them, and call on them again if futures needs arise.

It went fine, especially considering that it was over ninety degrees that day. They started on time and completed the work in the estimated time. And they did a good job of cleaning up - very dusty work! The house is noticeably cooler and the temperature is nearly even between floors. We should have done this years ago.

Houle Insulation was great. They were one of four quotes and all the others had set up to let me know that, being that my attic was tight quarters, that they could only do so much. Houle said that they should be able to get 85% of what we needed. I questioned that and held them to it after hiring them. They were prompt, courteous and very efficient. My house looked the same after they left, very cleanly. After a couple of weeks as Spring (the longest in MN history) finally turned into Spring and we had hit our AC, the upstairs still wasn't getting cool. This is why we did it in the first place because we did not get the proper circulation or airflow. I told Arne, owner of Houle, that I have his check, however, I'm hesitant to pay for a job that I don't think entirely addressed the issues. He quickly set up an appt with me and we met the following week. When I got home, my wife had already let him in and he was busy sealing up the doorways for a pressure check. It was much better than when we originally had the Centerpoint inspection. He walked with me and showed me some leaks - window related - and we couldn't figure out why the airflow wasn't as good upstairs as it should be. We went downstairs only to find that a vent from our furnace fan was closed. I was embarrassed and quickly pulled the check out of my pocket. We have been living in great comfort since. Sorry to waste your time Arne, you guys are great.

This is our second time using Houle and we would certainly use them again. They insulated the open rim joists in our partially finished basement. We were able to get our estimate and service date scheduled quickly. On insulation day they time finished the insulation in a little over an hour. My B rating on the price is based on the fact that it was higher than the estimate I got on my Energy Audit so this is not based on contacting anyone else for a bid and it may very well be fair. It was certainly a great investment and I would use them again.

The estimator, who was the former owner of the company, was very knowledgeable and made specific recommendations to deal with our ice dam problem. He also suggested that we have an energy audit through Centerpoint to possibly recoup some of the money we spent on the insulation. The crew arrived promptly and seemed to do a very good job. Most of the work was done from outside, but when they came inside they were careful to remove their shoes and cleaned up after.
Description of Work: Added batt insulation and blew in insulation in the attic area. Added two additional vents. Changed the attic/storage area to a cold attic to hopefully prevent further ice dams.

Excellent! Arne and his crew arrived right on time, went to work protecting my furnishings, eetc., and then everything on the approved bid. Todd arrived 20 min early on the day of my appointment. He was polite and explained everything the crew would do and wrote a fairly detailed estimate. However, to compare apples to apples with other bids I received, I emailed the company to further clarify. I received a response in a timely manner and felt comfortable hiring this company. However, even with the 5% AL discount, their price was still $600 more than the company I ended up going with. I'd consider them for future projects, though.

We first looked on Angie's list to find a professional insulation company. First, we called a couple of different companies . We liked the way Arnie, the owner, presented his company. He came to the house in a few days and walked my husband and son through what needed to be done. He gave us an estimate that day and we signed up for a date right away. We only had to wait 2 weeks. The workers were polite and got the job done in a day. We were very pleased with the job done. Now we just have to wait for Winter and watch those heating bills go down. The house is 110 years old with no insulation and plaster walls.
Description of Work: They came in and laid tarps over all the furniture before they started. Drilled holes into the walls, blew in insulation, patched the holes, vacuumed and cleaned up before they left.

Once again, Houle was excellent and in this case, went above and beyond the call of duty. Arne, an owner at Houle, came out to the house to check if the water leak was related to earlier work they had done in autumn of the prior year. He checked multiple locations, even unsealing and crawling back up into our attic and the roof, and found the leak. It turns out it was from eroded flashing around our chimney, so not related to the insulation work, but Arne still sealed the leak at least in a way that will hold it till we get it fixed more permanently and took photos we could use with the exterior contractor. He also checked if the insulation itself had been damaged by the rain and subsequent leaking. All at no cost, even when I insisted we at least reimburse him for his time (he was there about 20-30 minutes). These are good folks who do really good work in a great way!
Description of Work: Came back to check water leak from roof that we (my husband and I) thought might be related to attic insulation work Houle did in November 2012, though we weren't sure.

The contractor who came to do the estimate was professional, thorough, straight-forward, and honest about what needed to be done vs did not need to be done, as compared to what other contractors were saying. ( i.e " we could charge you an extra $2000 to suck out the old insulation, but I really don't seen the need for it" ) He also handed me the estimate before he left. The crew arrived a few minutes early, and were courteous and professional. In the course of the job, they discovered that the bathroom fans were not properly vented to the outside, and went ahead and fixed them without adding any extra charges to the estimate. They also left the place spic and span, and finished the work an hour sooner than expected. All in all, everyone I met from the company did an excellent job- it's obvious that they take great pride in the work they do!

Arne came out to our home to provide a bid for insulation and air sealing work after we had an energy audit through the Center for Energy & Environment. The meeting was set up very quickly after I initially contacted them. Arne took the time to take appropriate measurements and answer questions. He seemed very professional, knowledgeable and reliable. The bid was provided within a couple of days. It came in quite a bit higher than the other two bids which is why we ultimately did not select Houle Insulation, but to be fair we did not do an in depth comparison of the work he was proposing compared to the other companies so there may have been differences that accounted for the higher price. Overall this seemed like a very reputable company, but it came down to price for us.

Workers were assembled outside my house probably half an hour before the time I was told they would start. They rang my doorbell at the appointed hour and got right to work. As I was told when I got the estimate, they had to cut a hole (about 2' x 3') in the knee wall to gain access to the space, but this was done with minimal mess. When they were done, they put the piece they had cut out back in place and patched it beautifully, The work took pretty much the entire day. Although they cleaned up pretty well, there was still a significant residue from the cutting, mudding and insulation. I am not sure that this is entirely avoidable as it takes more than a day to settle out of the air. That is my only complaint. They were very polite and conducted a blower door test after the work was completed to document the reduction in heat loss. Most significantly, there was an unequivocal improvement in the comfort and function of my house. The most notable thing was related to ice dams. I have lived in my house for over 25 years, and every winter I would have terrible ice dams, especially in the front of my house above the knee walls. I would have to rake the snow off the roof to limit the problem, and even then I would often end up with ice melting over my entryway and then refreezing, requiring me to chip the ice off my front stoop just so that I could open the front door. After the work was completed, I never had ice dams! I am not saying they were smaller or less of a problem... for the first time in 25 years I did not have ice dams, period. I had no need to rake the snow off my roof. I presume that I also experienced savings in energy consumption, but I have not looked at that. I could not be happier with the result!

I met with Arne, who was very patient a nice guy. He gave me a run down of what he would do, how much it would cost and why my room was freezing. He was friendly, patient and answered all of my questions. When the job day came, the guys were attentive to putting up sheets to protect the rest of the house from dust and other contaminants and were very professional. Houle also arrange for inspection (St Louis Park) and everything went accordingly to plan. Overall, the experience was great and personable. After a few bids from other contractors, I definitely got the sense that these guys know what there doing and are a customer oriented company. A few of the others failed to mention anything about a flame retardant or were insisting on spraying foam in areas that do not need it.
