Houle Insulation Inc

Insulation, Drywall, Energy Efficiency Auditing,

About us

For more than 30 years, Houle Insulation Inc., a Minnesota based insulation contractor, has been re-insulating homes in Minnesota just like yours. A better insulated home is more energy efficient, comfortable and quiet. It will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat and cool your home, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by energy use. Houle Insulation Inc. specializes in re-insulating existing homes; sidewalls, attics, bypass sealing and blower door testing in the state of Minnesota. Blowing cellulose insulation into your walls and floors, and sealing attic bypasses can reduce high heating and cooling bills, ice dams and drafty rooms. Some other problems homeowners are faced with are frost, mold and water damage to ceilings. The discomforts of a poorly insulated home are often wrongly blamed on furnace and air conditioning problems when the actual cause is the insulation or installation of the insulation. You could save significantly on your heating and cooling bills by having attic bypasses sealed and insulating your walls and attic to adequate levels.

We called for an estimate early in the summer. The representative from Houle was here on time and did a thorough inspection of the premises to give us an accurate estimate of the costs needed to insulate the house. He also gave additional tips on better insulation practices within the house beyond what the wall insulation would provide. He was friendly and helpful. We appreciated the conversation with him. The cost estimate was a bit more than what we expected. We had to wait a bit before scheduling the actual work, to get our finances in line for the additional costs. So we made an appointment for 6 months after the initial estimate request. The company person told us that there would be a 4% increase in the estimate for the time passed. This was disappointing, but we went ahead and got the job done anyway. The job was very well done. They were on time and did the job thoroughly. The cleanup after the work was done left something to be desired.
Description of Work: We needed to get a 100 year old home insulated for the first time in its life. There were some complicated spots that needed special attention. It was a massive effort.

It went very smooth. Arne came to my house with an estimate. When the crew was ready they called. They came on a Saturday so I didn't need to take time off from work.
Description of Work: Added insulation to my attic, sealed around vents and the skylights. This included gaining access to part of the ceiling through a wall in the attic. Everything was put back together and cleaned up.

Everyone, from the receptionist, to the quoter, to the workers, were very easy to deal with, willing to answer questions, and give options. They did an extremely thorough job, sealing around wires, looking in nooks and crannies, etc. We also have a cathedral roof and they figured out a solution for that. We chose this company in part because they use cellulose insulation which has a good R value and is environmentally friendly.
Description of Work: Last spring we had terrible ice dams. Plus we have done several remodelings affecting the attic. Houle came over and first went through the actual house, looking at lights, venting, etc. for possible problems. Then they spent at least an hour up in the attic. When they came to do the work, they told us exactly what they were going to do, how long it would take, etc. They cleaned up everything and were done in less than a day.

Todd came out promptly after my call, did a good job explaining what would be done. The aluminum siding could be removed and then returned with no problem. There was no way to get at the porch walls without drilling directly through the walls. Todd was accurate as to when the work would be done (a couple months after the initial visit), and how long it would take. The work was done in February, in between snow storms. I thought Todd's crew did a pretty good cleanup, but come spring I found lots of cigarette butts around the house foundation, and I don't smoke. I understand that cleanup in the snow is problematic, but what did the smokers think was going to happen to those butts? When I discovered this I sent Todd a note, but didn't get an acknowledgment back. Subsequently I also found poor cleanup in the attic - cans of insulation left lying around, and the fiberglass vats not returned to their original place. This winter will tell whether the insulation job was effective.
Description of Work: Blew in insulation in old (1908) house. Some installation was through the attic, some required removal of siding to drill holes. Access through front and back porches involved drilling holes in the porch paneling. Sealed gaps around chimney and other access points in the attic.

Estimate was reasonable, work was carried out promptly, and results were good. Arne was thorough with the evaluation and recommendations and took time to answer my questions and be sure I was comfortable with the plans. Work was scheduled about as promptly as I expected and they adhered to promises and plans. The work was completed in one day and was done professionally. The team was careful to keep the area clean - I hardly noticed they were here by the time I got home later that day.

There's no access to the attics from inside my house, so I was going to rent an insulation blower to fill the peak and dormer attics from the outside. I went to a place and found they rent blowers for free if you buy enough cellulose. My house needed $150 in cellulose so the rental was free. I wrote Houle an email on a Tuesday evening that I was having the house re-roofed Thursday. I wanted to know the cost of materials and labor of the having cellulose blown in for me. I received and email and call the next morning. Price was estimated at $500 for main attic with an additional charge for the dormer attic and they were free that same afternoon. I decided it was worth paying Houle to do the job for reasons of safety, convenience, and fast turnaround. They arrived in the afternoon as promised and completed the job within a couple hours.

The were out on time and kept me informed of what they found and what they were going to do. They did a great job on moving everything and were done in less than 4 hours. The only complain that I have is that we found left over material blowing around a few days later that had been left on the roof. We had one other issue with a vent cover but that is moot since we are having the roof replaced.
Description of Work: Added insulation to the attic to bring it up to a reasonable amount (was original insulation from 1961 build). Also, moved ducting outlet for the bathroom vent fan closer to the actual fan for better air movement.

I was having a problem with ice dams and moisture accumulating then freezing in my attic. When the winter thaw came, the ice melted and damaged my ceiling. Houle came and gave me a free estimate - they didn't simply look in my attic, they got in my crawl spaces and spent a good amount of time figuring out what exactly needed to be done. They told me approximately when they could do the work, called when they said they would, and did the work in the time span they promised. They were careful to lay tarps down to not damage my floors. Since I haven't had a winter yet with the new insulation, I am not sure of the quality of the work, but by looking at visible areas of my attic, it looks like a job well done. Overall, I am very satisfied with the work and the courteous, professional Houle staff.

I am very pleased with the work. Houle was very responsive, sending out an estimator right way. Then, they were very flexible in scheduling the job. They arrived right on time for the job and were very efficient. The crew was respectful of the house. They used a hole saw to drill 2.5 inch holes through the plaster and lathe walls, blew the insulation into the wall cavities, and then patched the holes. Afterward, I simply did a little light sanding, primed the spots, and painted. The spots are not at all visible. I think the insulation will make a huge difference in comfort in those rooms this Winter.
Description of Work: Houle blew cellulose insulation into four outside walls. Because of the specific siding on my house, this was done from the inside of the house, through the plaster walls.

We, Minnetonka Community Church, have an old building that was originally the Minnetonka City Hall. We now use it for youth activities and other large group meetings. There was almost no insulation in the walls so we hired Houle Insulation to insulate the walls. They came and gave me an estimate that I thought was very reasonable and they installed the insulation on the day and within the parameters that they said they would. The only complaint I had was that there was more damage to the siding than I expected and the workers just left when they were done, without any explanation. After thinking about it, I think the damage was reasonable. I just wished they had talked to me about it.

I had moisture build-up in my attic causing stains on the ceiling. I called Houle after looking at their website. It was very informative and described the problem in my house and how they would fix it. The representative came to my house exactly on time, investigated the problem and proposed a solution. On the day the work was to be done his entire team arrived five minutes ahead of time and waited in their trucks until the exact time to come in. I appreciated their respect of time since I only had a few minutes between getting ready for work and leaving the house. They completed the work faster than anticipated, and the charge was the same as the estimate. Everyone with the company was professional and friendly. They were very neat and clean.
Description of Work: All points where wires, vents, pipes, etc. go from the house to the attic were sealed. Vents were installed to allow air to pass from the eaves to the attic, increasing ventilation. The existing fiberglass batting was covered with a layer of blown-in cellulose to increase the R value.

Excellent. The first visit for a bid was prompt and clear; a written bid. There were a couple phone calls to schedule; he was polite and flexible. The crew arrived early, were very accommodating, were careful to warn about potentially causing dust on things and then to help me get those things out of their way; they did the job very professionally. They cleaned up. I was not home when they completed the work, and the guys were careful to make sure the door was locked when they left. Overall, this was a fine experience.

Todd was prompt returning initial call and came on time for estimate. Came on the day planned to do the work and did it all as planned in one day. Very nice man to work with. Explained everything and answered all my questions. Happily and promptly came back for a mid-winter check. Price was as agreed. Although estimate was made in August, work was not done till December, as planned. Todd phoned about a week in advance of the actual date work was done. This was all as planned. Gas usage is down, ice dams are gone, and icicles are way way smaller.
Description of Work: Sealed all attic bypasses, boxed around recessed ceiling lights, and blew insulation into many tiny places as well as entire attic. Gained access via roof so no mess at all. Roof does not leak where they entered. Todd does estimating and is part of the crew that does the work.

Todd came out to give me a bid within three business days of initial contact. He was prompt and knowledgeable. He indicated that he would be able to complete the work within 30 days of an approved work order. His crew did a good job at making the process as non-intrusive as possible. They did a great job of keeping the mess to a minimum while they were working and when they left I could not tell they had been there. My only concern is that they showed up early and I was not prepared for them. I made the mistake of having my neighbor let them in and felt like I did not have the opportunity to ask questions due to the fact that they were well into the process when I arrived at my house. In retrospect, I would have let them wait and gone through my normal process of confirming what is to be done before they got started. In all, a good experience.

Overall the job was excellent in every way. The work was completed for the estimated dollar amount and much faster than I anticipated. Houle had a two month backup in work orders which was explained to me immediately during the estimate visit. A date was agreed upon during the estimate visit and kept. I was reminded by phone twice prior the the scheduled work date. The crew of 4 people was more people than I expected. They were extremely polite, professional, very efficient, respectful of our home, friendly and willing to chat about their work during the job. Houle was always reachable by telephone for questions prior to the start of work. Houle's website is excellent, answering many insulation questions. The crew was careful to clean up once the work was completed.

Houle called back the same day we sent an email inquiry. Todd came out for an estimate that week. He was thorough and informative. We went with Houle. We had asked to be on the last minute list because they were booked out several weeks and were called the day before the crew arrived to see if we could be ready...given the extreme cold that week it was easy to say yes! The crew arrived at time we were told and graciously waited 10-15 minutes while the gas company arrived and checked for leaks, as our furnace had broken the same day...Everyone I met was pleasant and professional. I felt really comfortable already from the contact we'd had with Houle up to this point. All of the work was done from the outside, with inside checks at beginning and toward end of job. It had snowed just that morning. The only evidence that work had been done were footprints and ladder marks in the snow...no mess at all. The house was significantly warmer (especially upstairs) within hours.
