Houle Insulation Inc

Insulation, Drywall, Energy Efficiency Auditing,

About us

For more than 30 years, Houle Insulation Inc., a Minnesota based insulation contractor, has been re-insulating homes in Minnesota just like yours. A better insulated home is more energy efficient, comfortable and quiet. It will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat and cool your home, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by energy use. Houle Insulation Inc. specializes in re-insulating existing homes; sidewalls, attics, bypass sealing and blower door testing in the state of Minnesota. Blowing cellulose insulation into your walls and floors, and sealing attic bypasses can reduce high heating and cooling bills, ice dams and drafty rooms. Some other problems homeowners are faced with are frost, mold and water damage to ceilings. The discomforts of a poorly insulated home are often wrongly blamed on furnace and air conditioning problems when the actual cause is the insulation or installation of the insulation. You could save significantly on your heating and cooling bills by having attic bypasses sealed and insulating your walls and attic to adequate levels.

They are busy, and so it took almost 4 months for them to come and do the job. However, they were punctual, professional and considerate. It was a dusty mess and they did a pretty good job cleaning up considering how dirty everything was. I still had to spend a good amount of time vacuuming furniture and cleaning everything off when they left, but I probably should have moved my furniture out of the 3rd floor or sealed it off better myself. It would have been nice to have some warning about the crazy amount of dust and dirt. The end result is perfect. The third floor actually stays cool with the air conditioner running and I hope that the ice dams are not a problem this winter. I would hire them again.
Description of Work: We have a 100 year old house that had practically no insulation in the attic or crawl spaces above and around the 3rd floor. We had horrible ice dams this past winter that we had to have removed for a costly bill. They worked a 10 1/2 hour day and insulated the peaks, knee walls - everything. They also insulated and sealed a crawl space under our family room that was very cold in the winter and made our family room almost uninhabitable because it was so cold.

We called Houle to upgrade the insulation in our 1.5 story bungalow after having severe ice dams this winter. They were really knowledgeable, assessed the situation in our house, and offered mitigation strategies including adding insulation up to R50 in the attic space as well as the installation of soffit and gable venting for the roof. We also had an energy audit performed through Linden Hills Power & Light. Houle was one of the four contractors they worked with which allowed us to get a rebate from Excel Energy and Community Energy Services. Although it took over 3 months to schedule the work (they're busy!) we were really pleased with the quality and professionalism of the crew.
Description of Work: They installed insulation between the ceiling/floor boards of our 1.5 story bungalow and insulated the knee wall spaces to an R50. They also installed soffit vents and 4 additional gable vents in our roof.

Very smooth, professional, easy to work with, good crew, thorough job, identified and fixed other related problems. Cleaned up nicely afterwards. For example, they discovered and fixed the exhaust vent from the kitchen stove which was not connected.

I had the house insulated before, but Houle used machinery to ensure the spaces were full. They had new technology that made it a much better job. They were prompt and did a good job overall. There was one problem, but they came out quickly to remedy it.

I was extremely pleased with Houle Insulation. I purchased the home in late March 2010 and noticed some ice dams on inspection. I also noticed my furnace and air conditioner ran almost continuously. I gathered estimates in the fall. Arne Houle's estimate was very thorough even going above code requirements (a comment per a Centerpoint Energy audit). He's very experienced. They do not use subcontractors. I had a good feel from him that I did not get from the other companies that I checked on. I booked late fall and had the work done early February. BOOK EARLY. They are extremely busy with good reason. I had ice dams before they came and had the worst part on the roof removed. Arne's team of guys: Rusty, Caleb, Travis, came and in one day, insulated my space. I was very impressed with their professionalism and hard work. The top quality of work that Arne and Kari adhere too obviously carries over to the people they hire. Kari manages the office and I was in contact with her frequently. Her customer service was always top notch. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Houle Insulation again, but unless I move or remodel, I doubt if I'll need to. The ice dams continued for many people last year but not for my house. I did not have a problem after they came. My furnace also ran a lot less and I'm sure I'll use the air conditioner less often too. Although insulating a house can be fairly expensive, it's an upfront cost that will be recovered over time and then the savings in energy costs will continue. It also protects your house from costly repairs. I found the service to be a very wise investment and an added bonus for when I sell the home years from now.
Description of Work: Insulate the attic space in my 1920's Bungalow. 1.2 story home. 864 sq. ft. foundation. I have a partially finished upstairs with attic space behind kneewalls and 3 access doors. Removed all original existing insulation. Sealed all attic bypasses using a variety of materials as required: closed cell polyurethane foam, fiberglass batting, dense pack cellulose, and attached thermax foam board on access attic doors. Installed air chutes and completed trim around access doors. In the basement: sprayed closed cell polyurethane foam in rim joist cavities.

It made a huge difference. They did really well. We had some ice dams in the dining room ceiling and because the ceiling was damp a piece of the ceiling came down during the insulation work. It happened while they were doing it but the ceiling was already compromised. Even so they offered to split the cost of repairing the ceiling, which was very fair. They also recommended someone who did a wonderful job. They really stand behind their work. The workers were very polite and friendly. I can get sort of chit-chatty and they made sure they stuck to their work but they would smile at my kids when they were running around. They were wonderful.
Description of Work: We used Houle Insulation to do all of the attic spaces with insulation, foam insulation in all of the floor joists in the basement, blew insulation in all of the walls in our upstairs living space and sealed up all the attic bypasses.

Backstory: Ice dams galore. Insulation and ventilation the answer? The way my house was designed/built makes it virtually impossible to have both air space and insulation all the way down the slanted ceilings and into the soffit vents like I had read about. Arne from Houle (who's awesome btw) informed us that the only good way to achieve a 1? air space and get enough insulation in would be to tear the slant walls apart from the interior. They would have to be taken down to the studs, furred out deeper, insulated, then re-sheetrocked. However, this was NOT an option for us. So, he told us that best way (for us) to limit heat loss in the slant walls was to run a tube all the way down the cavity and fill it with densely packed cellulose. That it would give us the highest R-value that we could get in that enclosed cavity. Though everybody always talks about air flow when insulating a house, that was not the case for the style of home that we have and I appreciated Arne giving us the detailed description while performing the diagnostic for the bid. We got a bid for the job in the Fall but since they are so good at what they do, I unfortunately couldn't get an appt until March. I gladly waited since I was reassured about their competence and integrity during the initial bid. As for the actual work...fantastic. Punctual, friendly, professional, and super clean-up skills. I'll be using them again when I get to the exterior walls. Can't wait to see how it performs next winter.

Overall, the job went well. There were a couple of issues we still need to iron out with them. When he came in to do the initial review he brought in an infrared meter so he could see the air leaks. They insulated very quickly. The crawl spaces in our attic were not totally done to our satisfaction. For the most part they were good to work with. They cleaned up after themselves. Some things weren't quite done to our satisfaction.

Arne came out promptly in early October to inspect our attic and prepared an estimate on site, explaining in detail what would be done. Unfortunately they were booked into January so I had to wait. Because of the ratings in Angies list and my experience that day with Arne, I wanted to use this firm and was willing to wait They came out on 1/4/2011 and with a crew of 3 they performed the work in a timely manner per the estimate. They were very open to answering my questions and showing me what they were doing during various stages of the work. They protected our floor and cleaned up after they were done. Houle Insulation was worth the wait but if I was going to do this again I would have called in the Spring or Summer rather than wait until Fall. I would definitely recommend this firm to others.

Arne conducted the estimate. He was exactly on time. He confirmed the appointment date and time the day prior to arriving, in this case he called on a Sunday evening which was perfect as Mondays are always hectic in our house. He was professional in both appearance and actions. He explained in detail what the process was. On the installation date, his crew arrived on time as promised. They did a great job covering all floors to and from the access point, as well as covering all furnishing near the access point. When they were done, they cleaned up any trace of their presence. As they were preparing to leave, they asked me to walk through the house to ensure it was as clean as possible. What great service. I worked with the office to make sure all paperwork was complete for the Xcel rebate program. They were prompt and very professional as well. I would highly recommend Houle Insulation.
Description of Work: Our 1982 2-story home had limited insulation in the attic. I contact Houle Insulation, as well as a number of other installers, to have project scope and estimates. The estimate was in line with the other three. I had a prior customer as a reference for Houle, which made the decision easier.

Houle Insulation was professional from start to finish. Arne came to my home to do an estimate and after thoroughly inspecting the attic recommended installing air chutes, not in every other rafter space as another installer had suggested, but in every space. His price for doing so was only minimally higher than the other bid. When I agreed to have the work done, the Houle crew arrived on time, were friendly and knowledgeable, and completely cleaned up the work site when they were finished.

This is a first rate, professional outfit. The day of the job Owner Arne Houle showed up exactly as promised to the minute and personally introduced his work crew. Since I had a busy day scheduled at work I gave him his check and left him and his crew alone in my house. I have no regrets. The job was done as promised and even the cleanup was impressive (this is very dusty work). I would not hesitate to recommend this company. Before I hired them I also checked the BBB and they had an A rating there too.

Houle Insulation Inc. Arne Olson, owner www.houleinsulation.com 763-767-8412 Great experience. We had been living with the icicles and occasional roof leaks in winter year after year. Finally had two insulation companies (found on Angies List) come and estimate job. Houle was not the less expensive but was clearly more skilled and knowledgeable about what should be done than the other company. They responded quickly to our initial query, gave us an actual quote (as opposed to the other company's ballpark estimate), held to their schedule as planned, arrived promptly, and did the work within the time frame they estimated. Very professional; carefully protecting my home from any dirt or damage and cleaned up well before they left. While we didn't crawl around the attic watching them work, we are convinced they did a very thorough job and used quality materials. We are looking forward to saving lots of $$$ on our heating bills, as well as living in a much more comfortable home this winter. Well worth the money!

Perfect. They were on time and cleaned up after themselves. The were creative about solving an access issue and the stucco patching was better than I expected. On the cleaner side of the house it's really hard to see the patches (they couldn't match the dirty stucco as well). I'm having them out to do another estimate on another insulating project.

The Houle team was great. They arrived when they said they would as well as finished when they said they would. They also were very careful when they were bringing materials into and out of the house which I appreciated. They cleaned up very well after all was done and it was like they were never their. I didn't have a single ice d*** issue this year and I could tell my furnace didn't turn on as much either. I have already seen a drop in my heating bill, which is great. I am very satisfied with Houle and the work that was performed and would definitely use them again as well as recommend them to my friends and family. The quality of their work totally made up for having to wait a month in order to get the work scheduled as they are so busy.

Arne and his wife Kari were remarkable from start to finish. The company is big enough to handle a large job but they deliver customer service as if you are the only person on earth. They returned initial call within 1 hour. It was February and we had just learned of a frozen pipe in our home, so we were anxious to get started. Arne came by for an initial inspection less than 2 weeks later which included a thorough look at all areas of the house. He sent a proposal to us within 24 hours by email and we chose a date. They book out relatively far but we knew that up front after our initial call. We figured it was worth the wait. We were right. Arne and his crew arrived on the date we chose right on time. They got to work immediately that day and came back on time each day for the next 2 days. Three days total, though they did finish a little early. There were no surprises, they were very respectful, cleaned everything as they went, and even offered to patch up an area that another insulator had left 'unfinished'. We were thrilled.
Description of Work: Sealed attic bypass: insulated plaster slant and dormer walls with dense pack cellulose, installed fiberglass batting to R-30 in kneewalls and covered with Tyvek, insulated under the floors to R-50. For all walls, insulated with class A cellulose using tube and dense pack method. Accessed all dead spaces as above.

Arne (owner) came out to bid the job and explained everything that would be done, removing old insulation that had been installed incorrectly, installing insulation on kneewalls in attic, insulation around access doors to attic and adding insulation above ceiling in four season porch. He came the morning of the installation and introduced his crew then left them to do their job. The guys laid down tarps on the carpet and cleaned up before they left, answered questions that I had, showed me what they had done. Everything was done as laid out in the bid, they were professional and did a good job.
