Houle Insulation Inc

Insulation, Drywall, Energy Efficiency Auditing,

About us

For more than 30 years, Houle Insulation Inc., a Minnesota based insulation contractor, has been re-insulating homes in Minnesota just like yours. A better insulated home is more energy efficient, comfortable and quiet. It will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat and cool your home, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by energy use. Houle Insulation Inc. specializes in re-insulating existing homes; sidewalls, attics, bypass sealing and blower door testing in the state of Minnesota. Blowing cellulose insulation into your walls and floors, and sealing attic bypasses can reduce high heating and cooling bills, ice dams and drafty rooms. Some other problems homeowners are faced with are frost, mold and water damage to ceilings. The discomforts of a poorly insulated home are often wrongly blamed on furnace and air conditioning problems when the actual cause is the insulation or installation of the insulation. You could save significantly on your heating and cooling bills by having attic bypasses sealed and insulating your walls and attic to adequate levels.

From the initial consultation with Todd to the completed job this has been a wonderful experience. They went above and beyond our expectations with some of the best customer service I have experienced. The two men that came out were extremely friendly taking extra time to answer all of my questions and they did a great job cleaning up after themselves. I am so glad we went with Houle Insulation, would hire them again if needed and can HIGHLY recommend them. Thank you Houle!

Todd came out in January to give an estimate and an overview of the process. He explained everything in detail but in a concise manner. He called ahead to make sure it was ok that he was 15 minutes early to the appointment. I was waiting for a second quote that week so I told Todd I'd get back to him. Houle come in about $400 less and did more work for than the other quote had on it. Houle must be a busy company because I was scheduled all the way out into April (which was fine with me). Arnie (the owner) had called to schedule and he went over the process again on the phone (nice touch). We scheduled for 4/3 and they called a few days before to remind me what needed to moved away from the walls. The three man crew showed on on 4/3 right on time at 7:30a and they were very courteous. The covered everything with plastic and taped. Drop cloths were places in the work areas as well. We spent the day at neighbor's porch and I poked my head in mid-way. What a mess this type of work creates however I wasn't worried...as they had joked with me that if I stopped by in the middle of the day -- it would be a mess. The crew did a three-coat patch on the wall - mighty fine too...it didn't take much sanding to get them paint ready. They cleaned up AMAZINGLY WELL! Kudos! Of course there is dust in the air that took a day or so to settle out, but you cannot fault them for that. I appreciated the attention to details like clean up. Also they finished at about 2:30p. 5-stars to Houle -- we're looking forward to less drafts, warmer rooms in the winter and a drop in our heating/cooling bills.
Description of Work: Installed cellulose insulation in our sidewall stud bays from the inside of our house (because we have stucco) and sprayed basement rim joists with foam to air seal and insulate.

Arne was very professional and helpful and made a clear offer to stand behind the work and fix any concerns. In the end, turns out the buyer's inspector didn't really even go up in the attic, he just looked from the attic opening and there were no issues after all. We were very glad we had gone with Arne and Houle Insulation for the work. Not only did they do great work, but they stand behind it and clearly provided amazing customer service for us more than two years after the work was complete.
Description of Work: Houle Insulation did our insulation in our attic in 2010. We had picked them based on the positive reviews on Angie's list. We just recently sold our house and during the buyer's inspection, the inspector raised some issues about the insulation. We called Arne and he came out and took a look at it, took pictures, but he couldn't find anything wrong. We asked the inspector to clarify his concerns and Arne took the time to respond even though he was on what I'm sure was a much needed vacation.

Arnie was prompt and professional when preparing the estimate. His crew was prompt on the day of installation and left my house cleaner than when they came! They were professional and friendly, fully explaining what they were going to do and reporting at the end of the day what they did. Arnie also stopped in to check on how the installation was going. Very impressed with the quality of work and the resulting energy savings!

From the visit for an estimate to the installation, all went smoothly and very professionally. The estimator was quite thorough in explaining what was needed and provided a variety of options for our consideration. The four person crew worked together very well and communicated effectively with us. After they were done they cleaned up thoroughly. In looking at their work, I was very impressed with the attention to detail and quality of work. After they were done, the house definitely is more comfortable. Would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Insulated the house to help prevent ice dams. Did a thorough assessment of the house. Proposed a comprehensive solution. Carried out the plan in a timely and thorough manner. Cleaned up after the job.

They did a very thorough job for doing the quote in the first place. I think they did a good job then and in terms of doing the insulation. They made sure that they sealed everything up putting boxes around the recessed fixtures. They did a pretty good job with it. I think for the work they did, I would give them an ‘A’ for price. I would use them again in the future if necessary.

I submitted a web request for an estimate and within less than an hour I had a phone call to set up the appoinment. The appointment was within a few days on my terms. Todd was very prompt, professional, and informative on what our situation was and the approximate timeframe when they could start. We accepted his bid right away because it just felt right, and we weren't disappointed. They were able to insulate our home around our timeframe needs and they were prompt, courteous, and left the work areas clean before they left. It was a good experience.
Description of Work: Houle Insulation Inc promptly returned my call, set up a bid appointment and install date. They were prompt, courteous, and neat while insulating the exterior sidewalls and attic with cellulose. They also sealed attic bypasses, plumbing pipes, and extended the kitchen exhaust fan up to the existing termination at the roof line.

They were very clear on what they would do with the estimate. I had a blower test done so I knew what I wanted done. They took it further with very clear explanations. Houle is quite in demand; the service was over 60 - days out. They gave me almost 3 weeks notice and confirmed it the week before. They were there on time; very professional, cared about their craft and cleaned up completely. We are very happy with the job they did, and I highly recommend their work.

The men from Houle arrived as scheduled at 7:30am, got to work right away, and were courteous and professional. We left them to do what they're good at, so weren't constantly going upstairs to monitor or watch the work. The job was finished a bit later than expected (3:00pm), but Houle explained why the job took longer and, as I mentioned, an engineer from CEE dropped by several times to check the status of the work and confirm the quality of it. After Houle left, there were clothes to put back in closets and a fine layer of dust to wash off most everything, but nothing we weren't expecting.
Description of Work: We have a cape cod-style home with a half story master suite/bathroom. Houle removed old thermax and blew insulation throughout the roof line and into the knee walls. After they were finished adding the insulation, they patched and spackled all the holes and vacuumed the room. As with that type of work, a coat of dust definitely settles on most everywhere, but overall they were extremely thorough and clean. The work was completed in conjunction with a Center for Energy & Environment (CEE) loan, so a CEE engineer came out to inspect the work several times during the day and also completed a blower door test after the work was complete to determine the additional efficiency added to the home.

Arne was extremely helpful and polite. Him and his crew arrived promptly at 7:30 am, and were done by 5pm. We added to our order the day that they came, which wasn't a problem. The patches on our interior and exterior walls are amazing, and done very well. It's hardly noticeable that they drilled through our stucco to blow in insulation. You can really tell that they care about their customers homes and it's greatly appreciated. Our house was extremely dusty afterwards, but that's to be expected when you're drilling through walls and blowing in insulation. From getting an estimate to completing the work, Houle Insulation was great to work with and I would highly recommend. To note: It seems that they're a very popular company and it did take us two months to get an appointment scheuduled. It's worth the wait.

The whole process went well. The team showed up promptly at 7:30am and worked diligently until the job was completed. They cleaned up really well. The guys were friendly and polite and willingly answered my questions. The only reason I rated them a B on responsiveness had to with how busy they are. I had to wait a few days a couple times to get an answer to an email. When I did get answers they were always thorough and to the point. Unfortunately it turns out I'll need a roof next year. If we need to replace some decking I'll be calling Houle Insulation to come out and do the work. We got a bonus when one gentleman offered up that I should consider putting an elbow on the HVAC supply line in the knee wall area behind the bathroom since the line was pretty kinked. I did what he suggested and the heat delivery to the upstairs in that area is quite improved over last year.
Description of Work: My house is a story and a half. The house was getting severe ice dams. An energy audit revealed the roof insulation was never tied to the walls when the house was remodeled upstairs, so there were big leak areas in each knee wall. Arne's team came out and removed the low density spray foam insulation that had sagged away from the roof deck and replaced it with a high density foam insulation. They also pulled up subfloor in the knee walls and insulated the spaces where the roof meets the wall.

They came on time. I went over the area and asked some clarification questions and restated some of the issues that I told the sales person. Then they started the work and finished in about 7 hours.
Description of Work: They installed insullation in the attic . They had to go in through roof vents to blow in the insulation. They used three types of inulation. They first used foam to seal all the cracks, then they covered the knee walls with sheets of insulation and the ceiling they blew in insulation. They sealed all the kneww walls with tyvek for a tight seal.

This company came out for an estimate in May. After I decided to go with them I got the following e-mail message: Hello Rick - thank you for choosing Houle Insulation, Inc. We are booking into the end of July right now for work to be done. Arne will call you when it gets closer to that time to find a date that works for scheduling. Give a call or email if anything changes for you between now & then or if you have any questions. Thank you! The end of July came and went so I e-mailed them to see what was going on. I got the following answer: I will contact you today to schedule a date. Sorry for the delay. I e-mailed back asking for a reason for the delay. I didn't get a response. I suspect they just forgot about me but there's no way to know that for sure. At any rate, I can't imagine a company not even bothering to contact a potential customer for an expensive job after they said they would. I also expect my questions to be answered. If they had a good reason for not contacting me then I could certainly understand. Now I'm leaning toward hiring another Angie's List company that provided me with an estimate for about half of Houle's.

As described earlier, what was to be a routine insulation job changed in scope when we discovered that not only had the previous owners used drywall that was way to thin for ceilings, but they had also nailed it in instead of using screws. The ceiling was no match for Houle's insulation equipment leaving a nice hole in the ceiling and lots of fluffy grey insulation all over everything in the room. Instead of being able to insulate our attic they had a very messy clean up job instead. It could not have been handled better in our opinion. They got a soft sided dumpster for all the insulation - it is amazing how much room this stuff takes! Arne Houle stopped by and and told us that we would not be charged for their work that day and gave us a reference for someone who could replace our drywall as we now know the entire ceiling upstairs needs to be replaced. They did an immaculate clean up job - the room was cleaner than when they arrived! We will have them back to insulate our attic in the fall after we have complete the tear-out and re-do of our upstairs ceiling. (We'll be checking Angie's List for providers here as well.)
Description of Work: We hired Houle to insulate our attic but they were unable to complete the work as expected when we discovered that the previous owner of our house had cut corners when they installed the drywall on the ceiling which resulted in the ceiling breaking through when the insulation equipment was placed on it. Instead Houle had a messy clean up job because there was a lot of the old grey insulation sitting on top of the ceiling.

My house had ice dams last winter in the valley area where my house connects to the garage. A (non-Angie's List) handyman told me the ice dams were caused by lack of insulation between the interior walls and the garage wall. I called Houle Insulation because of their great Angie's reviews for a no charge estimate hoping insulating the area would resolve the problem and scheduled an appt for 3pm 7/18/11. The appt. setter was very pleasant and polite. Todd at Houle called to confirm the appt on 7/18 and also said he had a cancellation, so he could be at my house early if that would work out, which worked great for me. It was 100-degrees and humid that day, but despite the unbearable heat, Todd got out his ladder and looked up into the garage ceiling. After checking, he said there actually was adequate insulation beneath the interior floor and between the interior and exterior walls and that lack of insulation was not th ecause of the ice dams. So, then he looked at hte roof area where the ice dams occur to figure out what else could be causing the ice dams. Upon examination, he showed me where it appears the siding in the valley got cut too short, so the flashing probably doesn't go high enough behind the shingles and all the roof lines and gutters funnel most the roof water to this valley. I am quite sure thse things are the root cause of the ice dam issues and will be attacking the problem from this angle now by replacing siding and probably adding an additional gutter line to redirect some of the melting snow water to another valley. I appreciate Todd's honesty and also his help in identifying the possible problem source and would highly recommend Houle Insulation.
Description of Work: I had ice dams last winter and had Houle Insulation out to do a free inspection and estimate to possibly insulate the area between my interior walls/floor and garage walls to prevent future ice dams.

I had this work done prior to getting a new roof, they saw some moisture damage on the roof sheathing due to attic joists plugged down to soffit vents on a long vaulted ceiling. They corrected this situation. and it turned out I had to replace a few sheets of plywood due to this.So it was helpfull knowing this was a possibility in advance.I notice the upper level of our home is much cooler this summer. If you want your home insulated well and a job done right, call HOULE INSULATION first and look no further, you will not be disappointed.

GREAT. We set up a time and date to come. Houle came on the date at the time we planned and stayed the whole day. After they were done, they went through everything with me and what they did.
