Description of Work: First, let me say I used Uptown Heading and Cooling to install my new boiler about 3 years ago. They did great work then. I decided to have them out this fall to do routine maintenance on my boiler and to bleed my radiators.

+ -1 moreAs a master plumber I think Ryan could've seen that the problem was an easy fix with the under-the-sink filter and replacing a small part that cost $2 would've been sufficient. It would have been a lot cheaper for me the customer, but being driven by making more money for Uptown, he recommended a $424 job that took 15 min. I wish there was more honesty from Uptown.
Description of Work: Figuring out why there was no cold water coming out of the kitchen sink after the under-the-sink filter was disconnected (connector broke).

+ 1 moreWe have been using Uptown for their Happy Home service where we paid a monthly fee and twice a year they tuned our furnace and A/C while also doing an inspection of our 101-year-old home. We have been a customer for the past 3 or so years. I had been very happy with them for good customer service by the support team and the technicians. During last month's furnace tune-up, they recommended $7470 (for the band-aid) up to $16,289 (for the platinum) to replace our water heater, replace our gas pipes and fix our cracked stand pipe. Bid seemed high so I called highly recommended Angie's List licensed and bonded 30-year old company for a second opinion. We don't need a new water heater and only need spot fixes on the gas lines. Total for the gas lines and stand pipe by the new company: $1800. Needless to say, we canceled our Happy Home service. I don't know what has changed at Uptown but proceed with great caution and GET A SECOND OPINION!
Description of Work: GET ANOTHER BID. They recommended unnecessary work and then did price gouging for the unnecessary work or expanded the scope to charge more. Submitting a complaint to the BBB.

+ -1 moreSee above. This company is misleading and deceptive. I looked up their BBB ratings, and their response to the 10 or so complaints similar to mine was something like, we're a great deal because we're so responsive. Let the buyer beware - get a second opinion.
Description of Work: My ac went out in August. While looking for a repair company, I bought one of Uptown Plumbing and Heating's yearly maintenance contracts, which means you don't pay a separate fee to have them come out for a service call. I figured I'd get the benefits of yearly maintenance checks, along with getting someone to fix my ac quickly. I'd seen great reviews for their company on NextDoor. The tech who came out said it would cost $900 - 1300 to replace the ac part, plus labor. That seemed like a lot for a 5 year old high quality air conditioning unit, so I tracked down the original installer, who said that didn't make sense. He fixed it for $200, the cost of the part. I assumed maybe Uptown Plumbing and Heating was mistaken about the part cost, although the discrepancy was concerning. Then they came out to do their yearly maintenance check. They said they could smell gas in my basement and I had 5 gas leaks from my boiler and furnace. I know what gas smells like and didn't smell it, but they had a bubble test that apparently showed 5 leaks. They turned off the gas to my home and called one of their plumbers over right away to fix the problem. I asked them to print out an estimate of the cost of the repairs to show my husband, which ranged from $3,021 for the "platinum fix" to $1,007 for the "band-aid fix" (their terms). They explained they see this a lot with homes more than 50 years old - that gas lines need to be cut out and replaced because the pipes start to corrode and can't be cleaned out. I told them I'd think about it and called Centerpoint Energy to get a second opinion. Centerpoint found 2 very small leaks and fixed them for a total cost of less than $200. They said we wouldn't have smelled any gas because the leaks were so small.

+ -1 moreWe have a contract with them, and they come every year to do what they need to do. They installed an unit last year, or the year before. We are very happy with them. We knew what it was going to cost, and they didn't add anything to the cost. They followed through with the service. They guarantee they can do it within a day, and we have an 100 year old house. They were able to do it in one day. They have trucks all over the neighborhood. They did a good job. I have no idea on price. I think we asked two other companies, and neither one said they could do an air conditioning without putting an mini split on the main floor, and these people said they could. They did it. I guess we have to take for what we want. Great quality, we are very happy. They followed through for us. Hopefully we won't have to use them again.

Description of Work: I spoke to "Paul" who requested I repeat what I was asking for 3 times, because he was too busy trying to listen to his co-workers gossip, rather than take a call! I hung up on him. Hopefully the owners have a talk with the "Paul" about customer service and ease dropping when a potential is on the phone with him!

+ -1 moreExcellent Excellence! This was a very long (12.5 hr.) day for Mikan and Tye. At the end of the day the new AC system was fully functional. They were competent skilled professionals who were fully prepared for and thus smoothly handled all aspects of this installation, including some unique and unplanned issues due to attic space constraints. Fortunately this was a rather cool day which resulted in comfortable working conditions in the attic. They put down drop cloths as needed and they took great care while inside our home. The cleanup after the work was done was very superb, with the affected first floor work areas completely spotless. The out side area where the compressor unit is located looks very attractive with a plastic cover covering the coolant lines and electric cable running up the side of the house and into the attic. This was our second experience with Uptown. We had them replace a 50+ year old boiler furnace in October 2015. We were very pleased with Uptown Plumbing Heating and Cooling then, and again now. We would not hesitate to recommend or to use them again.
Description of Work: Replaced my old failed central AC system. This included a more difficult attic install for the plenum with A-coil and blower.

+ 0 moreThey told us we needed to replace the whole furnace and the AC unit, for total cost of over $6k, even though it just seemed like the fan was broken. We agreed, and paid up. However, we noticed our electricity costs went up, even though the new unit was supposed to be more efficient. But we didn't put too much thought into it. Then we had them come out here for an annual inspection this year. Even though the inspection was for the AC and furnace, they pointed out that we needed new gas pipes. After a heavy sell, we agreed to get it done, lest Centerpoint come out and turn off all our gas. They replaced the pipes for another $3k. But after that repair, we still smelled gas. We waited a couple days to see if it would dissipate, and it didn't, so we had them come back to check the new pipes. Suddenly, it appears that our stove is ALSO faulty. But, I was assured, that was completely unrelated to the work that they did, and just happens sometimes, even right after work is done, the tech has seen that happen sometimes. I found that really suspicious. They red-tagged our stove, and told us we'd have to schedule another appointment to have an appliance repair or replacement done. Oh, and he suggested I replace the water heater too (we bought it one year ago). I told them that we are done with their services. Our house passed inspection with flying colors 3 years ago when we bought it, and I don't believe that it suddenly has morphed into a money pit. We are done being fleeced by these guys.

+ 0 moreFirst of all, furnace tune up went fine - cleaned and no issues. The pair of 50Gal water heaters, I was told, needed to be replaced due to various issues - which is not really surprising due to their age. The first shocker was their insistence of a gas leak in one (scare tactic?) and then their set of solutions. As many other reviewers have accurately described, their options, starting with the Platinum option down to Band Aid, are essentially fraudulent given the amount of extras and downright false insistence on work needed "for code reasons" that other plumbers have confirmed is not true. Quote for ONE, NATURAL VENTED 50Gal gas WH was over $4000 for Platinum (which included an unneeded Expansion Tank - Plymouth water pressure doesn't need one and extra ductwork "due to code") down to $2000 Band Aid. Market for one gas 50Gal Natural WH installed is about $1300 without fake extras. Similar experience with AC check/tune-up. I had joined their $10/month Happy Home club and have since quit because I cannot trust their recommendations and pricing and now need to pay again for a second opinion...They ARE ready to negotiate when you bring this up, but its more like a trip to the used car lot sales office than dealing with an honest tradesperson. Skip on by to the next provider and beware of the Platinum to Band-Aid options and hold on to your wallet.

+ 1 moreI asked Uptown to evaluate a small issue I was having with a noise/vibration I was experiencing at a kitchen faucet. They told my pregnant wife that we had a litany of very serious plumbing problems. They bid out the entire job at $19,000, but provided various pricing options down to a "Band-Aid" solution which would have cost $7,000. I had another master plumber come in to evaluate the situation and provide a second opinion/second bid, and learned that essentially everything Uptown had told me was false. There was no pressing need for any work, but I spent a few hundred dollars replacing the faucet and all is well. Uptown does in fact provide quality work, but they are very expensive and their estimating/bidding is, for lack of a better word, fraudulent. I will not use them again, and would caution others to avoid Uptown.

+ 1 moreTechnician came to house and took one look and said whole new boiler needed. I didn't think too much because the house is very old so it didn't surprise me. They were fine (in the beginning) technician called a sales guy who came out and quickly had an estimate. I chose one and they had it in the next day or so. All were friendly etc and I had hopes this would be a good company to deal with. They called me and set up final payment saying "works is complete" etc etc. Talked about a rebate thing that I still havent seen. A couple of weeks later I get an email with info and saying that I have to call to get a final inspection done. First, In my way of thinking that does not sound like "work is complete" second for the amount of money involved it should be done by the company. I would not have paid second half if I had known the final wasn't done. I also sent a text to the installation guy when I inspected the installation. They put an insulated flexible duct (required I know) about 5 feet or so in front of the only door to enter exit (or move things out) of a cramped basement. When I received the previously mentioned email I responded back with my disappointment: nothing in return. I still had the text thread with the installer guy so I sent him a text. No reply. This is where they dropped right into the "every other company zone" I wouldn't doubt the inspection thing is buried in the fine print somewhere but just very frustrating. Not as frustrating as the lack of communication after the checks cashed.

+ -1 moreThe technician came to do a tune-up on my furnace and water heater. and not more then 10 minutes later told me I needed a whole new They explained that my furnace was leaking carbon monoxide and it was dangerous to leave the furnace on. It seemed slightly suspicious especially after he told me that the carbon monoxide was 4 ppm...which is a perfectly normal level. He also wanted to schedule an appt. to have a plumber come out because I had poor water quality . He backed off of this after I told him what a financial strain a furnace replacement would be. I called another company for a second opinion. Turns out my suspicions were warranted --I didn't need a new furnace...I didn't even need repairs... Do not let this company into your home--you will end up paying way more than you ever expected.

I felt they were trying to scam us for something we need. The other furnace company we used informed us the cleaning never took place.

He answered all of my questions and also pointed out that I might want to have the gas pipe to my dryer replaced. He had tested it to make sure it wasn't leaking gas, which I very much appreciated. He was professional, yet friendly, as well as efficient and knowledgeable.

+ -1 moreThe techs who did the initial inspection explained that they have a state -of- the-art CO detector and they offered to have another team come and verify the results. When they showed me the deterioration (and the tiny hole) I did not need a second team to verify the results. The replacement was scheduled for the next day. The team was on time, worked very efficiently and explained details as they went along. v They cleaned up, leaving my basement cleaner than when they started. They did a terrific job!
Description of Work: Uptown did a furnace tune-up. They came on time and were very professional, especially when they had to tell me that I had a carbon monoxide leak. My 36 year old furnace (boiler) needed to be replaced. This was a surprise because another (very large company in town) had done a tune up the end of May and found no problems.

+ -1 moreI had a leak in the air conditioning system. It was covered by the warranty. It was solved by another company. They didn't use a sniffer to protect the gas in the system. I found out that what they used was extremely expensive and it was a wrong way. Instead of looking for the obvious leaks, they tried to charge me $430 to take the system apart to find a leak in a coil that was accessible. They charged me for things that I didn't need.
Description of Work: I used Uptown Plumbing. They were diagnosing a problem with our air conditioning system.

+ -1 moreWe signed up for the $10 Happy Home arrangement. That in itself was reasonable. But when the guy came out to our house he replaced an escape valve and a coupling and we were charged over $800.00 He also told us that we needed to replace our water heater. But when our regular plumber arrived with the new heater, he told us our old one did not need to be replaced. I was left with the feeling of having been really played by scumbags.
