Dan and his team helped us completely renovate the upstairs of our 1920's home. His team was available to answer questions we had throughout the project and provided multiple options, with upfront costs for each option, throughout the project. His team worked efficiently and kept on schedule so that we were able to reoccupy the upstairs before a new baby arrived. The finished product is exceptional and we would work with Dan and his team without question on any future project.

I felt comfortable working with Dan, his designer Donella, his crew and his sub-contractors from the initial planning phase to completion. They all took pride in their work and so I was confident the job would go well. They were easy to talk to, answered all my questions, addressed my concerns and offered advice when I asked. There was a problem with an uncooperative sub-contractor that I had hired, Dan and his crew worked around the problem as best they could and dealt with it professionally even though it caused delays. Unexpected things always pop up, Dan handled this well and kept it from being worse than it could have been. They isolated the work area from the rest of the house and cleaned up everyday. So a good experience.

The work was outstanding. The job included framing in for the door and matching woodworking to my 1917 bungalow. We used a door I already had and they were able to make it fit perfectly. Mess was minimal and they were careful to clean up afterwards.
Description of Work: Dan installed a door at the top of my stairs going to the basement.

Scheduling has been right on and workers both experienced and easy to have around. They took care to protect the rest of the house from undue mess. They were experienced in the challenges of adding onto a ninety-year-old house. Again, professionalism and courteously really made the difference.
Description of Work: Extend structure on two walls to enlarge kitchen. This required excavation/foundation, demo, lam beams, new construction, stucco and roofing. Bidding process, planning and contracting was done with clearness and precision. Workers where professional, steady and easy to have around. Issues of blending new construction and an older house were handled with great experience (and worked into the price from the start). Care was taken to match features and stucco to the existing house. We were able to agree on my taking on part of the tasks (plumbing/mechanical/flooring/cabinetry) and schedules were establish and held. We are TOTALLY satisfied with Dan and his select sub-contractors.

Great, no complaints.
Description of Work: They fixed a rotted rim joist and some foundation issues. Also replaced some frost plate up on the second story. They worked fast and were very tidy. Also offered suggestions to lower the cost. Overall a great company to work with.

We had originally contacted Dan regarding a completely different project in (I believe) May 2011. As it became apparent that the siding work was our most pressing issue, we had him provide an initial estimate for that instead. I felt good about Dan right away. Good enough that I did not really pursue other estimates. He was prompt, straightforward, and easy to work with. Once we had agreed to work with him, we had to wait for new windows to be installed. We did not have a timeline on when that would happen, so we basically started with a loose agreement that Dan would do the work when it was time. By the time the windows were done, it was August already. During the window install, it became apparent that there would need to be a fair amount of work on replacing window casings on the majority of the house. We had Dan adjust his estimate to include that work, and the outcome seemed pretty fair. However, at this point, since it was already late in the summer, I think we ran into some scheduling problems. Dan's crew, was tied us with other jobs. The one thing that I would have liked at that point was for Dan to provide more clarity on when he thought we could be fit into his calendar. Ultimately, his crew did not start work until October 5th, which was certainly later in the year that we had planned on starting this part of the project, given that we still had painting to do afterwards. On the bright side, we had incredibly good weather this fall. No rain, lots of sun, warm. Furthermore, my wife's uncle, who is a retired carpenter, basically moved in with us for a while, and started knocking out a whole bunch of the work (with my assistance) while we waited. Dan did not have any issues with us moving ahead with work that would ultimately mean less money for his company, and in the end I think we saved a substantial amount on the job by taking advantage of the delay. Once Dan's team started, they were pretty quick, and did very good work. Grant was the lead on the project, and did the majority of the work. My wife's uncle was continuing work on portions of the house while Dan's crew was working, and they were very accomodating to share space/materials/knowledge with him (and vice versa). Grant was very adept at working with the curved portion of the house, and was willing to allow my wife and I to micromanage at times (which we have been known to do). He definitely showed an interest in making sure that we were happy with the job, not just getting the job done. The job took a little over a week, and the house looked great afterwards. The only snaffus really had more to do with the building supplier than with Dan's company. I think there was confusion about the type of siding that was going to be used, and the first delivery of siding had to be returned and replaced. This could have set things back, but the crew was able to knock out a bunch of other stuff while waiting for the replacement delivery. There seemed to be a delay on a couple of other deliveries as well over the course of the project. Finally, when the project was done, the building company overcharged Dan for materials (pretty significantly) and did not provide an itemization. Dan had passed along the price from the builder in the final bill, but I questioned why the materials price was so high. On looking more closely, Dan agreed with me. He was more than happy to go back to the builder, get all of the itemized receipts, and got everything corrected pretty quickly. Overall, I think Hanson building and remodeling does an excellent job for a very competitive price. The only worries that I had during the process were logistical. I never had a concern about quality.
Description of Work: We have a 100+ year old house that had a shingle-siding covering the original wood on the house. The original siding was about 2-inch reveal lap siding. Our overall project was to remove the shingle siding, evaluate the condition of the original siding, replace/repair anything necessary, replace the apron the the house, put a new drip cap on the house, and repair any necessary sofit/facia. Additionally, we had new windows put on the house (not by Hanson, done prior to Hanson starting work), and we had Hanson building/remodeling install the tops of the window casing (including the top-plate, bed-molding, flashing, etc). Ultimately, Hanson replaced about 45 courses of siding, did the apron and drip cap, replaced/repaired about 10 feet of facia, installed flashing over all necessary windows, and installed the top sill and molding for 8 windows. Complicating their project was the fact that we have a curved section of our house where a fair amount of work was required. Obviously bending boards around curves takes some skill.

Dan and his crew started and finished the job at the time agreed on. The bid was detailed and accurate, no surprises. Dan kept in touch through the process, making sure I knew where they were at and what would happen next. The steps were done by a subcontractor, Dan didn't like their work and had them redo them. Dan was great to work with and I have already accepted another bid from him to replace doors and windows.

The drain line from our kitchen developed a leak that caused water damage in our basement. Some friends had worked with Dan at Hanson Building and Remodeling for a bathroom project and recommended that we contact him to give us an estimate on replacing our walls. He came out at the next time that was convenient for us (a Saturday morning) to examine the state of the basement, hear what we were interested in doing, take some measurements, and explain his background in the industry and certification as a CLC/certified lead carpenter. We were interested in perhaps adding some wainscoting but weren't sure if that would be in our budget and noted that to Dan also. Dan gave us an estimate that broke out costs for each option we had asked about several days later as well an expected timeline. We had noted to Dan that we had a tight budget and he noted areas where we could save some money and may be able to do some work on our own to do that. Also, given that my wife was about 38 weeks pregnant at the time, we noted that we may need to be flexible on timing and he agreed (and was) very accommodating on this. We decided to go with his company to take care of our remodel and signed a work agreement to do so shortly thereafter. While the remodel was taking place, Dan communicated what was happening at each step and helped out explain it to us such that we could understand the process. He was respectful of our time, always starting and finishing each day during "conventional" times (8-4 roughly) and also being accommodating and respectful of our family's time needs in the week after our son was born. The end product of Hanson Building and Remodeling's work is great. We're very excited about the more modern look we have in our basement and appreciate the attention and effort that Dan and his group put into making that happen. Also, his flexibility and recommendations for areas where we could save money by building some sweat equity was great and helped us end up with a nicer area than we could have had otherwise. I would definitely recommend working Hanson Building and Remodeling again.
Description of Work: Dan Hanson of Hanson Building and Remodeling was the general contractor when we remodeled our basement after we had some water damage. The work performed by him or sub-contractors included rebuilding a non-load bearing portion of a wall; hanging, taping, and mudding drywall; and making and installing new baseboards.
