How many times, in home repairs, do you get to experience contractors who do a BETTER job than they estimate, complete the work in LESS TIME than estimated, at a cost BELOW what they estimated?? Let's face it, repairing a damaged sewer line is not the most fun way to spend money but these guys made the whole process easy! They warned us that trenching an 8-10 foot deep gouge in one's yard makes a mess but in the end, the damage to the yard was far less than what we expected and they finished in record time and the bill was less than the original estimate! Wow! On top of that, Craig and the on-site crew were polite, professional, and responsive. I couldn't recommend them more highly! Just a warning---don't panic when you come home from work to see a 20-foot long trench in your yard and an eight-foot-tall mound of dirt...it looks worse than it is...by noon of the next day, all will be fine!
Description of Work: Repaired collapsed sewer line. Required that they trench large section of our front yard and replace old sewer pipe with new.

Not only did the crew from Gene's do a better job cleaning the drain out, but they couldn't find the shifted tile that the previous guy from another company had pointed out to me. The folks from Gene's gave me the impression that they knew what they were talking about, and perhaps the other guy didn't, and they recommended not doing any costly repair right away. In their experience, the pipe looked pretty typical for what you'd find in a 1919 house, so I'll keep an eye on it with regular root removal. If I get any more backups, then perhaps I'll change my tune about the repair, but in the meantime, I think their professionalism and willingness not to charge me unnecessarily is pretty great.
Description of Work: previous drain cleaning attempts revealed a shifted tile, so I decided to call Gene's for a repair.

We are more than pleased with the final result of this job. Our sewer line was extremely long from the basement to the city sewer line in the middle of our street. We always had trouble with thoroughly clearing the sewer line due to the 150ft+ length of our existing pipe. What amazed us about this particular job was that the crew of two (very fit) men HAND DUG a 3X3, 14ft deep hole all the way down to our sewer line and installed a cleanout line up to ground level in under just under four hours. What was also impressive, is that when they were done, outside of a small mound of dirt and reattached sod which wore down through the Winter and was nearly level by Spring, our front lawn was relatively unmarred due to the hand digging method instead of what we may have had to contend with (large tire grooves etc) in the event they had used heavy machinery to dig the hole. Not the most glamorous line of work but these guys were friendly, curtious and efficient. A definite thumbs up for this company for sure.

Went exactly as planned and came in just slightly under the estimate because they needed two less feet of liner. They also threw in the camera work on both sections of the pipe and the cleaning for nothing. They were very helpful, reassuring me along the way and were sensitive to my concerns about cost overruns and overall cost of the job.
Description of Work: Excavate separated and offset sewer line at front of yard where the grade of the yard drops down to the city sidewalk and replace a 6 foot section of failed pipe, and place a PVC liner in the existing pipe from the front of the lot where the offset was up to the cast iron pipe inside the house (22ft). Also examine remainder of pipe from the city sidewalk out to the middle of the street and run a cleanout out to the main line.

We're doing some excavating in our yard to put in a rain garden and we figured we should also replace the main line because we've had trouble with it. Our service guy's name was Eric. He was very friendly and professional. He ran a camera down the main line and gave us some advice on how to mitigate the problems in the most cost effective way. We kind of have an old house so there were just some little things to get around. We also didn't know we had a septic tank in our front yard and he ran a camera under there and laid out what we were dealing with. He said he was going to email us a quote, but my husband is dealing with it. I assume he did.

In November we had normal maintenance on our sewer line and found that it was collapsing. We decided to replace it before we had a crisis. Eric Peterson of Gene's Water and Sewer provided us with several options to repair our sewer line, speaking to the pluses and minuses of each option. Because the temperatures were rapidly dropping he put a double crew on the job and finished it in one day (the temp dropped to -15 degrees that night), minimizing the chance of our having additional problems. While the excavation was filled in, the soil didn't settle because it was frozen. Gene's came back in April, after the earth had thawed, and tamped the remaining fill back into place. Eric was excellent at helping us understand our options, listening to our concerns and responding to our needs. He stayed in touch and was always professional in his communications and actions. His crew members were excellent; the worked hard, were polite and happily helped me better understand what they were doing and why. I felt they treated our property as if it were their own. I am recommending Gene's Water and Sewer to my family, friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: Excavated 8 to 10 feet down, removed 25 feet of old sewer tiles and replaced them with a single PVC pipe. They had to remove part of a retaining wall and break through several sidewalk panels. The excavation was then refilled.

Way better than we had anticipated since we had heard horror stories. It took only 24 hrs and they were extremely thorough, on time, and very trustworthy professionals.
Description of Work: Had to replace several missing tiles in our sewer pipe. They were very careful, and made the extra effort to only excavate what was necessary to repair the pipe by utilizing expertise (and several opinions, and additional equipment) to assure the location so they didn't have to damage sidewalk, or other areas that would require additional repair. They were extremely thorough, very professional, and sensitive to our family needs and schedule (w/o a working sewer line.) They replaced the tiles and used a liner, only where necessary in the pipe line. Didn't try to sell us anything we absolutely didn't need.

The job was a lot more difficult then what was anticipated because we have very hard soil and there were several gigantic underground boulders that needed to be removed. Gene's thought it would be a one day job, but it ended up taking three days because of the difficulties they encountered while digging. Our new water main is fantastic and they patched up the concrete trench in our basement floor very neatly. The men that did the job were very polite and hardworking and we felt comfortable letting them work in our house during the day while we went to our jobs. Best of all, the final bill was exactly what was estimated despite all the extra time and work that was put into the job.
Description of Work: We had our water main replaced. They had to tunnel under our street and sidewalk and through our yard into our basement. Also they had to attach a valve to the city water line and plumb the new water main into our house through a trench in our basement floor.

I obtained quotes from about five companies before contracting the work. Based on a video recording of the sewer line there was a section of disjointed pipe causing flow to city line to be slow. Craig took the time to view the DVD and explain their process. Although only a section required lining, we talked through the pros and cons of lining additional footage. I decided to line the entire route. Their quote was more expensive than other contractors; however the process of installing a liner was not invasive. Only one hole dug in the boulevard was required. Other routes would have required me to replace sidewalk and basement concrete & bushes, trees & other landscaping. They were able to schedule the work within an acceptable timeframe. The crew was friendly, easy to work with and offered to return if needed to further fix the filled hole.

Like another reviewer I too had to contact them a second time after initially scheduling an appointment. This time Eric did arrive at the scheduled time. He was knowledgeable, pleasant, answered my questions honestly, and showed me the cause of my reoccurring drain clog problem--a "dip" in the main line out to the street, and roots from a bush. He explained that the dip was the reason I needed to replace the section rather than simply clear out the roots. On the day the work was performed, some final inspection and marking of the ground was required. Eric made a special trip to fit my schedule, and again arrived on time. Their crew completed the job the same day and with a minimum of impact to the walkways and bushes in my yard. Craig responded to a number of questions I had, usually within an hour of when I called, but I did have to call back one time to remind them to send me a copy of some paperwork.

I called Gene's to schedule an appointment. We scheduled one for Wed. 12:30pm. At that time they did not tell me I needed to be home at 12:00pm to confirm through a phone call from Gene's. When I got home about 12:15 there was a call asking me to call to confirm our meeting. I called back twice in the next 1/2 hour and was required to leave voice mail both times. After waiting about 2 hours I left and went back to work. They never called back EVER! I guess they did not want my business.

I was really worried about potential damage to the house/yard with this job. The damaged section of the sewer line was directly below the front wall of my stucco house. This meant that one slip with the backhoe could result in permanent damage to the house. They were able to dig down without with a large backhoe and inflict minimal damage to the yard and no damage to the house. They also took great care not to damage a newly planted tree in the front yard that was directly in the path of their backhoe. Overall, they did a great job and did very little damage to the yard. They were very friendly and I enjoyed chatting with them during the job. One bit of advice: if you have this type of work done, try to do it in the winter when the ground is frozen. In this case, this worked very well to preserve the yard.

With a broken water line, you'd expect that companies would respond quickly and Gene's did. They set up an appointment but that's as far as they went. They never arrived. When called, Craig said he had given the appointment for an estimate to his brother, Eric. He said he would call Eric and let me know when Eric would be arriving. He also said he would call me right back. This was when they were more than 30 minutes late. I guess his idea of "right back" and mine are totally different. He has yet to call back. I left another message 30 minutes later asking if they had any interest at all in my project and requesting that they respond with either a "yes" or "no". He has yet to call. I left another message asking for the courtesy of a response. You can figure out what happened here.

Everything went very well. Gene's has an option to line the sewer line rather than replace the line. This caused much, much less damage to the yard. Of course, I didn't want to pay so much for something that I can't see, but this was the best possible experience for the repair. I had the work done about eight months ago, and I haven't had any problems. It is very nice not to need to worry about cleaning sewage off my laundry room floor any more!

Gene's responded to our inquiry the day after we called, explained how they were different than their larger competitor, and bid a significant amount less than their competitor who had already bid the project for us. The work started the following week after they pulled the permit. The 2 individuals who did the work were very professional, kept us updated throughout the project (even showing us the work and problems they encountered as it progressed), and seemed sincerely sorry that the project turned out to be larger and more expensive than planned. It's a tough type of project to say we had a "great" experience (who wants to spend money on replacing the sewer pipe), but overall I'd say everything went about as well as could be expected. It seems like a lot of money to pay for less than 2 full days of work, but there are probably costs to run and operate this type of business that need to be factored in.
Description of Work: Gene's replaced our collapsed clay tile sewer pipe in our front yard. What we originally planned to be a one-hole dig/6 foot pipe replacement turned into a bigger project, as they found that the pipe was back-pitched to the street. So, they had to continue to dig, remove one panel of the city sidewalk and go all the way to the curb before being able to meet up with the pipe under the street that was finally at the correct pitch. The original clay tile sewer pipe was replaced with new PVC pipe. Gene's recommended another company to fill in dirt, replace the city sidewalk panel, and seed the lawn.

Two days before we were supposed to go on vacation, our sewer backed up. Attempts to clear it showed that it was broken. Unfortunately, we have an odd situation where our sewer runs from our house, under our driveway and garage, through part of a neighbors yard, and into the city sewer line. Eric and Craig gave us a couple options that did not involve digging up the driveway and garage. Their crews were on time, polite, friendly and very professional. In order to access the break, they had to cross our neighbor's yard. They were very careful and respectful, and truly minimized their impact. Afterward, you could barely tell they were there and the amount of restoration I'll have to do for my neighbor is minimal. Sadly, once they repaired the initial break, an inspection of the line revealed many other small holes and cracks and required us to have a liner pulled the entire length of the sewer which was costly. I would recommend these guys to anyone. They really came through for us!!

SHANE WAS VERY HONEST IN HIS ASSESSMENT OF MY DRAIN. HE EXPLAINED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE DRAIN, GAVE ME HIS PHONE NUMBER, AND TOLD ME THAT THE PLUMBING COMPANY HE RECOMMENDED COULD GIVE HIM A CALL IF THEY HAD QUESTIONS WHEN THEY CAME TO CLEAR THE SMALL CLOG AT THE END OF THE DRAIN. I APPRECIATED NOT BEING GIVEN A HARD SELL FOR COSTLY WORK I DIDN'T NEED AND WILL BE SURE TO RECOMMEND GENE'S TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT NEED DRAIN REPAIR.
Description of Work: ANOTHER DRAIN REPAIR COMPANY, AFTER CLEANING OUT TREE ROOTS AND CAMERA SCOPING THE DRAIN, INSISTED I HAD BREAKS IN MY MAIN SEWER LINE TO THE STREET AND THAT IT MUST BE REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY. BASED UPON ANGIE'S LIST REPORTS, I CALLED GENE'S WATER & SEWER TO CONFIRM THAT WAS THE CASE AND FOR ANOTHER ESTIMATE. SHANE WAS OUT WITHIN 24 HOURS, ALSO VIEWED THE DRAIN WITH A CAMERA AND SAID NO REPAIR WORK WAS NECESSARY. AND THAT, IN FACT, I HAD ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING DRAINS IN MINNEAPOLIS CONSIDERING THE AGE OF MY HOME. SINCE THERE WAS STILL SOMETHING STUCK AT THE STREET END OF THE DRAIN HE RECOMMENDED ANOTHER COMPANY, SUGGESTED I GIVE THEM A CALL, AND GET ON A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM WITH THEM TO HAVE THE DRAIN PERIODICALLY CLEARED OF TREE ROOTS.
