 + -1 moreThe project went very well. Eric was pleasant in giving a free quote and offered some great suggestions. In the end we wanted a completely maintenance free deck which limited our options for customization a bit but Eric did not try to talk us out of what we wanted. His quote was much less than a previous quote for better materials. He was very concerned about keeping us happy as the project progressed and went above and beyond on trying to make things as smooth as possible. He also does the work himself and does not start multiple projects at once which is a great benefit to his clients. The quality of work was excellent.

 + -1 moreEric is great to work with. It took me awhile to decide between using cedar for the flooring or the Timbertech product. He is a good listener and very thorough and patient in answering questions. During the whole process he made good suggestions. After removing the lower floor boards it was discovered the support columns had alot of rot. Eric came up with a great solution to the problem (and at no additional cost). The attention to detail, professionalism and communication exceeded my expectations. Eric and his crew even helped move the deck furniture onto the new decks so I could begin enjoying them immediately. I love my beautiful new decks. It was a great experience and would highly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: My three old cedar decks had a number of rotten boards and the bottom deck was sagging. The deck flooring was replaced with Timbertech XLM Plank and the railings were replaced using cedar posts and aluminum spindles. The stairs were also rebuilt.

 + -1 moreWatching this project progress was like watching one of those remodeling shows on TV. Eric came out to estimate the project, and my wife and I could tell that he was already coming up with ideas of how to make things better and build a solid deck. The old deck was too small for a table and chairs (so basically not usable), and Eric figured out how to reconfigure the steps to make the deck bigger and more usable while still using the same footprint (actually using just a little bit more space). He arrived just when he estimated he could start, and he and his crew started every day at 7 and usually didn't leave until about 4pm--much longer days than most contractors. His design was just as he described it--very clean lines, very, very solid and more attractive than any deck I've ever seen. He even added a concrete landing at no additional cost because he said he really wanted to go above and beyond our expectations. The end result is amazing. We now have a much more useful deck that is visually very pleasant and more attractive than any others. When the building inspector came for the final inspection, he was very impressed, and even wrote "Very nice job" on the building permit--something I've never seen before. We had a great experience.
Description of Work: Tear off existing wooden deck and replace with composite decking, aluminum balusters and cedar railings. Completed deck size is 10 feet by 12 feet, plus landing and stairway.

 + -1 moreEric is great to work with. From bidding to the actual completion of the project, he kept us informed off all that was going on. He has a great work ethic and a very professional approach. You can tell he takes pride in his work. We decided to go with a composite floor (Timbertech) and Cedar/Metal railings. He did a great job with putting the design together and working within in our constraints (of space, location etc.). We would highly recommend him to others and hiring him back for a future project.
Description of Work: Our old Decks (~17 yrs old; one lot bigger than the other) were fairly unusable. Over the last couple of years, we had been looking at different deck builders to replace them. Going into it we were in two minds about composite vs cedar. Eric Mortenson provided a competitive bid and built beautiful new decks(retaining almost all of the existing posts). He also sturdied up the existing posts (they were showing some slippage over 17 years).

 + -1 moreEric is a teriffic guy to work with. He's a great communicator, he's friendly, always prompt , experienced and most importantly very skilled at what he does. One thing that we really appreciated was the fact that he was always on site. He had a helper who also was a very nice guy. Eric also made some very good suggestions regarding the design of the deck. Even though it was a simple design he made suggestions, per our request, to add some flair to the project. This was accomplished without adding any cost. We were very pleased throughout the whole process and love our new deck. Consider yourself lucky if Eric does a project for you.
Description of Work: Eric built a new 16 x 20 deck and steps using TimberTech composite products. The skirting was built using cedar. He was very diligent about acquiring the proper permits and dealing with the inspectors.

 + -1 moreFrom the consultation phone conversation I was impressed with Eric. He took his time explaining the different options. We set up an appointment and he came out and showed me pictures of previous work. He gave me pricing on the different options. I appreciated he took the time to answer most of my questions. It was not the rush job that some other deck builders did with their consultation. Eric took his time explaining the different types of decks and options for railings. He was very detailed and told me that if I decided to have him build my deck that he would do it himself and not some sub-contractor or employee. I think that is a very important distinction. He builds the decks himself. From the start of the project until the deck was completed, Eric showed up everyday. He built a beautiful deck, paying attention to all the details. He upgraded the posts, upgraded the landing for the stairs to make the deck stronger and more beautiful. He used the best wood, and exceeded my expectations. The pictures speak for themselves. After completion, the job site was cleaned up. Left over wood and garbage was picked up the next day. I would recommend Eric to anyone thinking about building a deck.

 + -1 moreI chose Eric for two reasons: 1) excellent reviews from Angie's list 2) strong design element to his work. I can say that we are completely satisfied with his work. If you are looking for a truly special deck - he is the guy. He worked closely with my wife and I to create a perfect deck/location for hot tub. From the beginning, it was clear that he wanted this project to be special and exactly what we wanted. He and his designer met with us several times to create the plans. I appreciated his attention to detail and partnership throughout design process. He strikes a great balance of listening to our needs and suggesting ideas that were key to the success of the project (particularly if we weren't initially inclined to go with that idea initially). Throughout the project, he kept us in the loop and always ensured we were happy with the progress and project in general. He is clearly a skilled craftsman and perfectionist in the best possible way. For example, he notice some issues with the support beams on our existing house (not part of this project). As a result, he designed the deck to reduce the load on these beams as well as reinforcing the beams of the house to make sure all was safe and secure. His attention to detail is also incredible (e.g., mounting of railings, skirt details and custom lighting solution). He finished the project on time and and we are highly satisfied. Note that final job was slightly higher than estimated due to additional work on beams (unforeseen) and agreed upon upgrades to decking layout.

He worked quickly and finished the project a bit ahead of schedule too. He even left the workspace cleaner than he found it. Eric is friendly and was a pleasure to have at our house.
Description of Work: Eric came to our house and provided estimates for repairs to our porch and building a new deck. He was clearly experienced and had creative solutions to offer. His bid was very competitive with others, but he gave us a feeling that he was the right guy for the job. When presented with a problem he came back with workable solutions, solutions that other companies said were impossible. He presented his solution to the City Inspector before starting the job, and got sign-offs before starting. He was a pleasure to work with, did daily clean-up, and kept us updated in person or by phone throughout the process. We would highly recommend him to others!

Both of us wanted the job done right. One day I was talking to a friend and he told me that Eric Mortenson was a really reliable person with good ideas and the job would be done right. My wife and I couldn't of been more pleased with the finish and completion of the decks that he did. Everything he did was high quality and precise. He went beyond what was expected and he is very honest and the job clean up was super. I highly recommend Eric Mortenson Construction. He is also a great guy.

 + 5 moreWe were familiar with Eric's work because he had done a porch for a relative and a deck for a neighbor. When we met with Eric for our project, we knew we wanted a porch but we did not have all of the details worked out. Eric did an excellent job working with us to develop the project and working through the details to ensure the final product would be excellent. He did a lot of research for us on products we considered including in the project, and he continually kept us updated on how our decisions would affect the overall project cost. When we were finally ready to proceed and received the estimate, there were no surprises. Throughout construction, Eric continually kept us updated on the construction schedule and the project was completed when we anticipated. Eric was even willing to adapt his schedule for a last minute change when we decided to install the EZ-Breeze windows in lieu of the original screens. Eric is a true craftsman with an acute eye for detail. He takes extreme pride in his work and does not cut any corners in an attempt to reduce his work.
Description of Work: We added a 13'x16' screen porch to the back of our house. In addition to the porch framing, the project included adding a new opening to install a new sliding glass patio door, removing some of the existing siding where the new porch attached to the existing house, and adding an exterior landing to connect the new porch to an existing patio door. The interior of the porch has cedar lining on the walls and ceiling and timbertech flooring. The exterior has siding on the outside of the kneewall that matches the original 1965 construction. Additionally, the porch contains electrical outlets, a ceiling fan, in ceiling speakers, exterior lights, and EZ Breeze windows.

 + 0 moreThe porch took about three weeks to build and went very smoothly. He initially tore off our old deck and poured footings for the porch. He had others do the shingles, siding, and electric, but all of the construction was done by him personally. We had to stop and restart at two points due to things beyond his control. He had ordered the siding well ahead of time and the vendor had received it, but a few weeks later when it was time to pick it up, the company couldn't locate it in their warehouse and had to reorder it. We personally delayed the project when we decided near the end to install EZ Breeze windows. We originally planned to do only screen but when we became aware of EZ Breeze windows as an option, we paused the project while the windows were made. Our porch is now our favorite place to spend time, and it was really great working with Eric! We are already talking with him about our next project.
Description of Work: Our siding has some slight hail damage and our deck was at the end of its life so we decided it was time to replace the deck with a screen porch and get our siding fixed at the same time. We opted for a screen porch rather than a three or four season because we love the outdoors, but without the bugs. We received three bids. Eric and another contractor had similar initial bids, and the third bid was about $10K more. We hired Eric because he went the extra mile before we had even made a commitment to build the porch. He drove us around and showed us different projects he had done, he was willing to come and meet with us on our time schedule, and was full of ideas but without any pressure to implement them. He is very personable, easy going, has great ideas, and does most of the work himself. He is very concerned about the quality and art of his craft. The two things we had to take care ourselves of were arranging the cable company to come and wire the porch, and staining the cedar on the inside of the porch. Our porch was built with a no-maintenance deck material for the floor and a layer of screen underneath to keep out bugs. The inside walls and ceiling of the porch are cedar. The outside is siding that matches our house and has cedar trim around the windows. The windows are EZ Breeze. They are a tough plastic and each window has four sections which can all slide up or down, or can be completely removed leaving only the screen. Eric was able to get the same siding and shingles that are on our house and was meticulous about the design so the porch looks like it is part of the original house and not just an add-on. The porch has a dog door, is wired for electricity and cable TV, and has speakers in the ceiling so we can connect to radio or iPod. We are planning to install a concrete patio on the side where you enter and exit the porch, but are doing that as part of a landscaping project.

 + -1 moreRegardless of all the unexpected surprises which were encountered, our deck system was completed on time with an additional cost to cover the unexpected conditions which is totally honest and reasonable. Eric has converted a deck that we were embarrassed to let people see to a piece of art that we love to show. Please take a look at the pictures and make your own judgment on his workmanship and artistic design. Eric, thank you very much for making this project such a pleasant experience.
Description of Work: Our current deck was becoming too difficult to maintain after seventeen years. Painting was no longer a viable option as it would not last more than 9 months. The railing was wearing down and becoming weak as well. After contacting four contractors to overhaul the deck, we selected Eric because of the positive recommendations in Angie's List and for his expertise, professionalism and integrity. We not only replaced our deck with better quality, but we also got a beautiful piece of art that is far beyond our expectations. Eric was extremely straight forward with us throughout the entire project. He presented various options in construction materials, brands, styles and their relative costs. We selected composite planks for the floor and a red cedar wood railing system with a maintenance-free aluminum spindle system to minimize future maintenance efforts. Since this was a repair and replacement task, Eric warned us up front that there could be some hidden issues which could only be exposed after the existing structure was removed. He was right. A few areas that did not meet the current building code and sub-structures that were degraded more than expected were revealed during the dismantling phase of the project. With his long experience in building decks, Eric helped us to get through the decision making processes with sound, yet cost saving solutions. In the end, the deck looks perfect in shape and beauty. Our confidence and trust in Eric s judgment kept increasing. As we continued to work with Eric, our fear of the unknown in a renovation project such as this was totally removed. The building phase was even more exciting. We were very pleased as we watched the floor being put together. The cedar railing materials had been hand-picked and were the best from several lumber yards.

He provided us with a portfolio of projects that he had completed in the past, which allowed us to see exactly what type of workmanship and quality we could expect to receive. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and full of ideas. Eric has experience with a myriad of products, so even though we were a little overwhelmed with all of the options, he outlined the benefits of each and provided us ample time to make decisions before the project began and along the way. We felt confident going in knowing that he would be doing the work himself rather than just sending out a crew to take care of it.  + -1 moreVery well. We first encountered the issue after making an offer on the house, and had a one-week window to get an estimate on the cost of repairs. The first contractor took five days to get back to us, and he finally told us he wouldn't have time to look at the porch. So we found Eric on Angie's List, and he came out within 24 hours and gave us a fair estimate. A few weeks after we moved in, Eric came back out to do the job. It took him just over four hours to put in new treated wood posts and lattice. We had also talked about him jacking up the corner of the porch where it had settled, but Eric warned that it would cause cracks in the wall and ceiling, so we simply had him replace the posts.
Description of Work: Replaced wooden posts and lattice for a three-season porch (serves as a TV room; added on to a 50+ year old house...not sure when). The porch had settled a couple of inches in the southeast corner, and the posts were rotting through.

 + -1 moreThe design was shared and approved, permit obtained and materials delivered on site for the build. Footing were dug and poured, deck was framed and finished in one day. Railing was completed the next 2 days and the stairway completed the next day. Debris were hauled away on the last day. The deck is extremely solid and attractive. Very pleased with the work, timeliness and most of all the quality.

 + -1 moreI have had experience with hundreds of contractors over the last 35 years and this was one of the best experiences I can recall. He was the lowest bidder and I received a truly premium job. Based on his photo portfolio and reputation, I would have chosen him if he was the highest bidder. His construction methods are driven by what looks best, not by what's easiest or cheapest. He takes great pride in his work and has great artistic sense. This is a contractor who makes excellent suggestions and should be consulted and listened to. He's been doing this since 1980 and knows what works and looks best. His standards are very high. He had twice the necessary lumber delivered for the job and required a second delivery because he rejected more than half of the material. The day after he left they picked up all the rejected material and took it back for someone else's deck contractor. He insists on doing everything himself with a part-time helper when needed. He was rained out one day and asked permission to work Sunday as well as Saturday, so as not to delay his next client. The whole project was done in 5 days across a weekend. Your biggest problem will be getting on schedule. I was very fortunate to catch him early in the season, with a 5 day hole in his short term schedule. He says he's now fully booked until well into August, saying his phone is ringing constantly because of something called Angie's List. I had to show him the list and explain how it works. Obviously all his focus is on his work and not on sales and marketing. The two other A list bidders were acutely aware of the list and had much higher pricing as a result.
Description of Work: Eric replaced all the deck surfaces, three steps and the railing systems on our two elevated lakeside decks. We used western red cedar although Eric has extensive experience with composites such as Timber Tech. This was our decision based on aesthetics. He also constructed the base for a 3' x 6' granite bar with sink that is permanently attached to the deck. This will receive the existing granite and sink from our kitchen which is being updated with new granite.

He listened to what we wanted and compared to the other garage companies we talked to, included more details for the garage to make it match our house. All the while maintaining a competitive price. He talked to us every step of the way during construction to make sure things were done as we hoped. He wants his customers to tell him if there is ever anything that they are even a little unhappy about and he means it. His attitude is that the garage is going to be standing for a LONG time, so let's get it right. And he did. We couldn't be happier with our new garage and the job he did for us.
Description of Work: Eric removed the existing 1 car garage and built a new 2 car garage, with the help of excellent subcontractors, from the ground up. This included a new concrete slab and sidewalk, framing, roofing, windows, soffit and facia, stucco, electric and landscaping. We were tearing down the original stucco 1 car garage that matched the house, and we wanted the new garage to match as well. It does and looks fantastic! Eric matched the pitch of the roof and the aluminum wraps around the windows and other trim. Our stucco is a pretty unique texture and that looks perfect as well.

 + -1 moreIt went great. This is the second time we've used Eric and he's always a professional. He takes great care in his work to give you the best product possible. He even did a few things here and there he didn't have to do. Everything was done on time (10 days) and it looks fantastic. He also connected us with someone at Menards who helped us pick out better and even cheaper cabinets and countertops. For a remodel, it was pretty painless.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel. Eric removed the existing cabinets, counter tops and window above the sink, brought the electrical and plumbing up to code. He put in a water line to new fridge, installed a new double hung window above the sink (patching siding and repairing plaster where needed), installed new counter tops, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, sink and faucet. Eric got the permits and dumpster.

 + 0 moreEric was very conscientious in bidding on the job. He made sure that I understood the options available and the cost of each option. He made sure that the details of the job were worked out before he started so that there were no surprises that added to the cost of the job. When we asked to change the sliding glass door jam slightly, he made the change immediately. We also asked him if he could finish the job quickly because we had a graduation party soon. He worked very hard to meet the deadline and we were very appreciative of his efforts. Eric is someone who I trust and I would gladly hire him again when home repairs are needed in the future. He has a positive attitude and loves his work. He a is very hard worker.
Description of Work: Eric completely replaced 27 windows and a sliding glass door in our house. He put in new insulation, matched and installed the new interior wood trim around the windows, and he installed a new small window in a bedroom for more air circulation. He removed the old windows, put them in the dumpster and cleaned up very well when finished. I had previously hired Eric to replace the cedar deck on our house. We are very pleased with the deck because of the ideas Eric provided to make it better, He was extremely helpful to us!

In the end he came up with a wonderful design that is both beautiful, cost efficient and flexible. We are planning on hiring Eric next spring to screen in the bottom portion of the deck. And again in the somewhat distant future to enclose a portion off the deck and make it an extension of our current dining room/kitchen space.
Description of Work: I own a walk-out rambler. Replace our old deck with a much larger one and build in the structual flexibility to eventually enclose a portion. Also add in framing below the deck for a 3 season screened porch.

He was very kind and polite. If he said he was going to do something, he did it. He was respectful of our property and family. He completed the project in a timely manner. He always left the job site cleaned up at the end of the day. Eric built the porch as though it was his own home! We would absolutely hire him again and we recommend him to our friends!

 + 0 moreWe were very satisfied with his expertise and workmanship. He stayed on the job until he could go no further until the subs finished their part. Then he returned on the day stated and wound the project up. He hired the sub-contractors and made sure the work was up to his satisfaction (which probably was more than I would have expected). His suggestions for staining/finishing the deck was in our best interest as well. Overall cost was a little less than I had expected for the size of the addition and the size of the deck.
Description of Work: We added a 3 seasons addition and a deck. Eric did the work from the ground up.
