Eric Mortenson is the kind of professional you come to Angie?s List to find. Our old deck was falling down and we began contacting contractors in May ? a little tardy in the summer construction schedule. We contacted 5 Angie?s contractors for bids; two eventually called back to said we were out of their territory, two never responded at all. Eric responded immediately and arranged a visit. He gave us a proposal, we accepted and he found a way to get our deck built by early July. Given the quality of his work, I have no idea why he would have any open dates. Lucky for us. We have wet Minnesota clay under our deck. Our old deck and all others around here heave each winter on standard cement footings. We had heard about the use of Diamond Piers to alleviate deck heaving problems, so we were excited to learn that Eric used them for problems just like ours. I?ll save you the photo, but our deck is exactly level now. We hope for a similar photo come spring. Eric does the work himself, with his helper, Scott. It took them 8 days and he built us the perfect deck. If you look down the edge of our deck, every flooring board meets the framing piece exactly. Screws are parallel to each other and equidistant in every board. We watched as every support board was measured exactly. If you want a deck built by an artist - and a genuine, nice guy - call Eric Mortenson. It was a joy to do business with him.

Eric Mortenson is one of the nicest people we've ever met. But, he is a also a true professional. Ours was not a very big job, but he handled it as though it were as important as any other. He does most of the work himself, with one helper. He is meticulous about how everything is done, and if it's not perfect he changes it. He gave us good advice about what color would look best with our house. We wanted a composite material with minimum maintenance and we think he chose the most reliable product. I assumed we'd go with uprights of this material beneath the rails, but he suggested black steel. It looks terrific. It took about four days, and at the end of each day they would carefully pick up all the debris. If something had blown into a neighbor's yard, they went and got it. At the end of the whole process, our yard looked like there had been no construction at all. The finished deck is even better than we expected. And, that's what Eric said he strives for: Giving people something extra that they didn't expect. Here are some examples of Eric and Scott (his helper) going the extra mile: ~Our old deck was above our dryer vent, making it impossible to access. So, the vent hadn't been cleaned in 20 years. I wanted them to rip off the old deck, and then have the dryer serviceman come out. Eric suggested that it would be better not to interrupt the work. So, he told me to schedule the dryer cleaning, and he drove over from Minneapolis the day before and cut away an access hole in the old deck. ~The Timbertech decking boards were shipped with plain wooden boards around them to protect them. Scott knew that I liked to save wood for my fire pit, and he offered to cut these long boards into fire-sized pieces for me. Actually, Eric ended up doing it because he could do it faster, but both men were awfully nice about it. ~Eric upgraded the post tops at no extra expense to us, simply because it would look better, though it hadn't been included in the original bid. This is an honest contractor. When he went to get the permit, Maplewood said that none was needed because the deck would be less than 30 inches off the ground. Eric could have not bothered to mention that to us, and we would never have known. But, he did tell us and deducted it from the total price. Eric Mortenson Construction is highly sought after. You will need to call him at the beginning of March, because within a few weeks after that, he is booked. As I said, he does all the work himself, so he can only do so many jobs per year. I have a Tudor- style stucco home in the Como neighborhood and wanted the replacement screen porch to look original to the house and in keeping with its design. Eric and I worked together on the drawings for the porch until I was satisfied with the design. The roof line of the house created challenges which Eric surmounted through his design for how to connect to the house. I had others look at my project and not been satisfied with how they would have designed the porch, given this challenge. The work itself is wonderful. Eric works on his projects directly, with an assistant. They completed the work on schedule, were considerate and neat while working. The porch is gorgeous and the craftsmanship is apparent. Definitely high quality. Eric is very personable. I enjoyed working with him.

Eric Mortenson did an absolutely exquisite job on our new deck. We just built a new home in November 2013 and had never contracted with anyone to build a deck before. We had no idea what we were getting into, what questions to ask, etc. We met with three contractors, including Eric. In meeting with all three of them, we gave them a rough idea of what we wanted, but also posed some questions and asked for creative/professional input. Eric provided us with very smart, sound advice and was the only one to put forward a creative recommendation that ensured the stairs would not block the view of a basement/future family room window. He brought several samples of materials for us to feel and view and clearly knew what he was talking about. We consulted with Eric in the spring of 2014. By that time, he already had several projects lined up in front of us, so he promised he would be back out in the fall to start construction. While I am aware that other people have had their decks constructed in a week or so, once Eric and his assistant, Scott, started on our deck, it took a little more than three weeks for us to see the finished product. That being said, however, it was clear to me that Eric was taking his time to be very precise and meticulous. The careful attention to detail is readily apparent in his work. Example: Our deck is adjacent to a gutter. They measured and cut one of the boards to hug the gutter perfectly and seamlessly. The deck as a whole is flawless and is constructed with high quality materials. Eric and Scott were careful to consult us as to future plans we have to built a patio under the deck and they measured/built with these plans in mind. They even contacted our potential future landscape vendor to ask some questions and ensure the deck would be compatible with our plans. We could not be happier with the finished product. It was well worth the wait and every penny spent. Last, both Eric and Scott were extremely professional, polite and considerate during construction. Like others have commented, we expected to see Eric outside occasionally in an oversight capacity, but he was actually the one outside each morning hammering, sawing, building etc. It's clear in our finished product that he takes a great deal of pride in his work and treats it as if it were his own home. With Eric, there are no shortcuts or rushing. You can expect a superior quality product at the end of your project and you will feel good about your investment. Thank you Eric and Scott for your fine work and painstaking attention to detail. You've made our home even more beautiful and we cannot wait to show off our new deck. (To the one person who left a poor review - your loss. You missed out on a great opportunity.)

Eric is a real craftsman. When we hired him, I did not anticipate he would be on site every day, doing the work himself, but that was what we got. He is a perfectionist, which is exactly what you want in someone performing work on your home. He demanded excellent materials in terms of the lumber he used and sent back several loads that he judged to be inferior. Since we needed to match and do some patching of our redwood siding, he sourced matching siding from a supplier in California. The glass we used to give us an unobstructed view of the lake had not been used locally before, and Eric spent the time needed to educate the building inspectors and obtain all the necessary approvals. Eric really went the extra mile to deliver a beautiful finished product and was a delight to work with - we enjoyed getting to know his family as well!

We have never worked with a contractor as good as Eric. His dedication to customer service combined with quality of work is the best we have ever seen.

We were extremely pleased with the work that Eric did. We have a beautiful deck that is a showcase of design and craftsmanship. He added a built in planter that is perfect. This is not a "cookie-cutter" deck. He took all of our concepts and made them come to life. We would recommend him for any work you need done. Working with Eric to replace my old deck was a good experience. From the initial consultation and planning through to the completion of the deck, we had good communication and the result was exactly what I was hoping for. Coming into the project I had little knowledge and understanding of the details involved in the choices available to me... and Eric's experience was valuable in helping me to decide what to do. Eric is a craftsman with great skill and experience who takes pride in his work... and treats your project as if it was his own. I would highly recommend him for any other deck project in the future.

Eric did a phenomenal job. We are so happy with the way our project went from initial consultation to detailed design to final product. He had very good ideas about how to improve our space - size, shape and aesthetics. We are amazed at how seemingly small things can make a big difference in the usability of the space such as placement of the door between the porch and the deck as well as placement of the stairs. We trusted Eric's expertise every step of the way and he definitely delivered! Eric has a small group of helpers but he was on the job all day, every day supervising and inspecting every inch of the construction. He is very meticulous about the work he and his team does. At one point he decided to replace one of the large support beams because he didn't like the natural "gouge" in the wood. He said although it wouldn't make a difference once we painted it, he didn't like the looks of it and took it upon himself to replace it. He was there at 7 AM promptly every day and most days didn't leave until 6 PM or even later. He was there several Saturdays in order to keep the project on track (unfortunately our rainy June made the schedule challenging). On one of the particularly rainy days Eric was concerned that we would have flooding in our basement (not because of any of the work he was doing but because he noticed that drainage under our deck was not ideal) so he came over in the pouring rain and shop-vac'ed the area under our deck and took it upon himself to dig out our existing drainage to improve it. Eric kept us informed as to how things were progressing each day and consulted us on details as the project went along. He made sure that each detail was approved by us, although in most cases, we relied on his suggestions regarding what would work and look the best. I would highly recommend Eric for your project! He is courteous, meticulous, trustworthy and hard-working. We are so happy with the way our porch and deck turned out and are happy that our project is completed so that we can enjoy it, however, we miss Eric!

I started off by finding Eric on Angie's List. I called him directly, scheduled a prompt estimate and our initial meeting he spent about an hour providing suggestions on design and materials. Eric took the time to understand the vision we had for our backyard and ultimately what role the deck would play in it. We had a second meeting to review larger sample colors to better see how they would look next to each other. Eric's estimate, much to my surprise, came in lower than our other bids. This is surprise because after our initial meeting it was clear that Eric was a special contractor. Meticulous in detail with real attention to the craftsmanship of your deck. He truly did treat it like an art project, which might sound silly at first, but after having a deck built at another property a couple years ago there really is no comparison between the two. The extra details around how Eric does the trim and maximizes space on stairways really sets him apart from others I've seen. I had the opportunity to observe a few days of the construction, in which Eric was present from start to finish, providing not only instruction but a careful examination every step of the way. He does not settle for less than perfection. I think I watched him redo a post for the railing for several hours until it was perfectly level. He and his crew were friendly and diligent, they showed up early and worked late. They came on Saturday and fought through the rain to keep the project going. Start to finish the project was complete in 12 days. One further example that stands out, early in the framing of the deck Eric had informed me that he was not satisfied with the original approved plan because while it was "passing" he wanted to make changes to increase the structural stability of the deck. He ran these changes by me and I agreed, however, what was unexpected, Eric informed me he would be taking on the added lumber costs. I can't say that I've ever had that experience with a contractor. It was a pleasure working with Eric throughout the process and I have already recommended him to several friends who are looking to do some deck work. Being in a new neighborhood, many people have been getting decks built. I have yet to see one that can compare. Thanks Eric, we love our new deck. It is exactly what we wanted. We were happy to be able to fit into his schedule, but he'd certainly be worth the wait if he were booked for the season.

Eric, a Master Craftsman, created an exquisite, high-quality outdoor living space for my home. Eric has earned an international reputation as the DaVinci of decks. The deck he built for us last summer, is an example of that reputation. Eric designed and built my deck which has become a seamless extension of my house. This was especially important since I was adding a deck with a wheelchair ramp to the front of my home. I wanted to be sure it would be a beautiful space, that's why I called Eric. He built a deck with a ramp on the back of my house two years ago. At that time I had decided to put a deck and ramp on the back so I could get the wheel chair access without chopping up the front yard with the big zigzag design I had seen used in many home ramps. The deck we have in the back (designed without a big zigzag) is so beautiful we have been receiving many compliments as house guests join us on on the deck. It was the beauty of the back deck that encouraged me to venture into the public level of a wheelchair ramp out my front door. I knew Eric could design accessibly with style. He did not disappoint! The neighbors love how the front deck and ramp look; and we do too. And of course it functions beautifully and safely. Eric follows all ADA guidelines and has an keen aesthetic eye. He builds with quality and pride. When it came time for the final inspection from the City of St Louis Park, the City Housing Inspector said this was the best home ramp in the city. I already knew that.

We are extremely pleased with both the process and the results! We selected Eric based on his reputation, his open and honest communication style, and his obvious care for the quality of his work. At our first meeting we got the impression that Eric would do whatever it takes to design and build a deck that he's proud of and the customer is happy with. And that's exactly the way it played out! Eric was very patient with us through the design process. As we looked at various materials, we realized that we wanted wood that is beautiful, durable, and environmentally sustainable. Eric helped us search out and consider local and national wood suppliers. We ended up purchasing salvage old growth redwood from a supplier in California. Eric made many excellent suggestions about the deck design, railing selection, and lighting. We were building an adjoining patio at the same time. Eric worked closely with the patio builder to ensure that the deck and patio fit together properly. Eric's communication all along was excellent. The price we were quoted was very reasonable as compared to other bids, and we were charged exactly what we were quoted. Eric and Jim started and finished the job exactly as planned, and were very professional at every step of the way. The end result is beautiful! Every detail is perfect. We couldn't be happier. We would recommend Eric's company without reservation.

During the initial meeting with with Eric M., he provided us with many good ideas and suggestions for materials and design of the deck. He is very knowledgeable and obviously takes great pride in his work and the quality of the work he delivers. Our deck is flawless and the work was completed in the estimated time (approx. 1 week). During the work Eric M. answered any questions we had. We highly recommend him as a contractor for deck construction.

Eric met with us to discuss various ideas for replacing our cedar deck, he was very helpful with ideas without pushing his own agenda. When we asked for more input he provided it and gave us his opinion without being pushy. He sent us initial plans and after feedback he made some requested adjustments and than sent us more detailed plans showing the overall project from various angles. Project was delayed somewhat due to weather and Eric kept us informed as to approximate start date with assurance it would be completed this season. He and his staff tore out the old deck in one day and prepared for the new footings so the city inspector could approve them, he was thorough with the permits and inspections to ensure no issues arose later. His target completion date was just over a week and they completed it several days early, there was a small issue with the lighting on one step and when we notified him he had it corrected within twenty-four hours. We are extremely pleased with the workmanship and the follow-up; they were not the least expensive option but we feel Eric's work is well worth the money paid. We now have a lovely deck that more than meets our goals and have received numerous compliments from neighbors and friends on the final product. I would strongly recommend Mortenson Construction for any project and anticipate reaching out to them if we need further projects in there areas of expertise!

This was the best experience we've had with a home improvement project and we've done quite a few. Eric was awesome to work with! He had good ideas, was honest from the start, had a great crew, did everything we asked and more and lived up to everything he promised! He was very easy to work with and the quality of the deck is great. We were nervous about the door installation as most people have an exisiting door to their deck, but the door was installed perfectly and looks like it's always been there. Top notch service, great communication and the best quality. Plus, there were no surprises on the fees or the billing (which is something we've experienced in the past with other contractors). If you're thinking about putting on a deck, I think Eric is the best in the business and would highly recommend him!

If every contractor experience was like this, there would be no need for Angie's List. Everything you've read about Eric Mortenson Construction is true. We met with five contractors in the initial phase of our project and from the very first meeting we knew that we wanted Eric to build our new porch. He is an incredibly kind man but is serious about his craft. His years of experience made everything go easily, and every day we saw the level of detail and skill that separates this man's work from everyone else's. His is a boutique business, and you can expect personal attention every step of the way. Our porch was built by a two-man crew - by Eric (the owner) and his helper Chris. They would report to the job site six days a week, on time, and work for nine or ten hours even during the excessive heat of July 2013. They left our back yard clean and tidy every day, and were friendly and cheerful every day. It was a true joy to watch our new porch being built. We cannot recommend Eric Mortenson Construction highly enough. He is head and shoulders above everyone else, period.

Eric was amazing to work with. He built a brand new deck from the ground up. He was meticulous, with great attention to detail. Totally professional from the word go. He delivered an amazing product and also on time, despite some less than optimal weather conditions. It gives me great pleasure in acknowledging a true genius, who enjoys what he does.

We were absolutely delighted with our experience with Eric Mortenson construction. He was very responsive, returning our calls and emails very quickly. We had called three deck contractors and Eric scheduled an estimate with us within a week, while the other two pushed us out two weeks. Once we met Eric, we had so much confidence in him that we cancelled the other two bids. He listened to us and gave recommendations on what type of deck and design would be best for us. He had really good ideas for what would fit with our home and our lifestyle. Once we signed our contract, he was timely in delivering plans and gave us a start date for the project. Eric and his crew were very professional. They worked more than one day in the pouring rain to get the work done. And the work was meticulous. We watched as the crew measured each board and cut fractions off the ends until the boards fit perfectly. He definitely lived up to his reputation as the da Vinci of decks. We love our new deck and feel that we made a great choice to go with Eric Mortenson. He delivered on his promises and work was done exactly as he described. He exceeded our expectations and we have recommended him to all of our friends.

I called Eric to get an estimate on a project. He failed to answer the phone, but his outgoing message reported that he would return my call within 24 hours. 2 days later, still no word from him. Called him back again, instead of returning phone calls - he updated his outgoing message that he's not doing estimates at this time. That's great for him - but if you set the expectation that you will call someone - you should call them. Updated Review: Since leaving this review a few days ago, Eric (or his represenative) has since typed up a letter and hand delievered it to my home asking if he can assist me. Angie's list gave him my address. I am not sure why they drove to my home instead of just returning my phone call, but I continue to be uncomfortable that they did it. Apparently I'm not the only person who has had this experience. Eric expressed to me what had happened that caused him not to return my message, and I wish him well in his future endeavors.

Eric prepared an estimate quickly and when I accepted it, was able to get started within a few days. He did a great job on the deck and exceeded my expectations in quality and execution. Would highly recommend!

Since I didn't use Eric, there isn't much to tell. I just wanted others to know that he would definitely be worth considering if you are doing a home improvement.

This project went well with only a few minor surprises handed to us by Mother Nature. Eric and Chris quickly dismantled our old deck and began digging the footings. When we discovered that we had a major drainage issue with our clay soil that would affect the footings with winter heaving, Eric worked with us to find a contractor to solve this problem. We felt he was always an advocate for us when dealing with these other contractors. Eric and Chris dug the footings deeper than required and insulated them. The drainage/landscaping contractor added a 2" foam insulation pad and a new concrete patio that will ensure that those footings never heave. We feel another deck contractor would have just dug the footings and gambled with the deck footings heaving in the future. Eric takes his decks seriously and would never jeopardize their structural integrity.

Eric built an amazing deck for us back in 2010. Unfortunately there was an issue with Timbertech's Mountain Cedar colored board and they faded to a black and purple color. I filed a warranty claim with Timbertech and Eric helped me every step of the way through the claim process. Timbertech agreed to replace the faded boards and kick in a few hundred dollars for labor (no where near close enough to cover the labor costs of removal and replacement). Eric picked up the new boards for me and completed the work on what I would call one of the hottest days of the year that we've had; and on a Saturday no less! Eric took great care to ensure the job was completed correctly and that the placement of the new boards looked exactly the same as the did before. He even added some post skirts around all of the posts to ensure that any scratches and new notches that had to be cut for the new boards were not visible. The deck looks better than ever! Thanks Eric!

Working with Eric (and Chris) was awesome. At every step along the way, Eric and Chris made sure we were happy with what they were doing and how the finished product looked. Eric called us throughout the process to see if we had any questions or concerns about how things were going. When we first contacted Eric, we knew generally what we wanted, but we weren't sure how to best make it work on our house. Eric spent time with us showing the different decking options and many pictures of other projects he had worked on. We have had experiences with other contractors in the past where once they get started, they are in a hurry to finish so they can get paid. This was not close to true of how things went with Eric. Once we gave Eric our down payment, he told us where we would be on his schedule. Not long before Eric called us and told us that he would be able to start earlier than he had thought, if it was OK with us. Once they started, Eric and Chris worked h****** our deck (and only our deck), staying late in the day, working through the holiday weekend (after asking us if that was OK) to get the job done right. Once, I spotted Eric taking down some wood and redoing it because it didn't look right to him. He never mentioned to me that he did this and I don't think he knew I saw him do it. That shows how much pride he has in his work. As the project came together, he did several "extras" at no cost to us "because it looked better". The LED lighting, which we were lukewarm about initially, really turned out to be awesome. We are so glad we decided to go with it. He even switched from his first choice to another brand when he thought it would look better.At every step of the way, Eric would say that his goal was to exceed our expectations and by his actions, I can tell he really meant it. His work was exceptional (everything looked perfect), his communication was great and the final product was better than we expected.
