Description of Work: My sister and I went through Empire for our father. We had them carpet his living room; 1 bedroom; family room and put in a Laminate floor in the kitchen. The work was done in the fall, I believe it was in 2007. The carpet was laid so poorly it stretched out within one year and is now dangerous - it all needs to be replaced. Worker actually made my elderly father pay an extra $250.00 on the spot or said he couldn't finish the job in the kitchen! I called many times to complain and nothing was ever done. I was told "the worker had no place taking money from my father" however, we were never reimbursed. We were given incorrect information on how to care for the laminate floor we were actually told you could use water and windex to clean it! Due to this the floor warped, Empire would only replace with the same exact floor. We got an attorney and finally settled by going through our own insurance company to replace kitchen floor. I would never use this company again! Empire was the worst mistake we ever made!

Rep was on time and pleasant, but distracted when a personal call came. He only showed us a couple samples. There wasnt much given to look at. I would have preferred more samples to look at. An at home estimate is nice idea, but not too productive if there arent many choices provided.
Description of Work: He came to provide estimate for carpet. He arrived on time for the estimate. Unfortunately, the rep received a call just after he arrived from his wife who was almost hit in a parking lot. He was a salaried sales manager and indicated he normally didnt do sales calls but they were really busy. So with those two things combined he seemed like he wanted to wrap things up pretty quickly. He only showed us a couple samples, and when we indicated we liked the style of one but not the face weight, he seemed to indicate they had better face weight available but didnt move to show us. The general estimate he gave us seemed to be reasonable as it would have included carpet, pad, installation, removal and moving furniture. We didnt get to the point of providing a specific estimate. Im not sure if he didnt have other samples available or was just destracted by the phone call and wanted to leave.

It was just like the commercial. I called them on Monday, they came out Tuesday night, and we had an install setup for Friday (could have done it Thursday, but Friday worked better for us). When the installer came out, he noticed we had drain tile in the room and suggested that we glue the tack strips instead of pounding them in. Since he had no glue, he came out Saturday, set the strips and came back Monday to get the carpet in. The crew was very professional and friendly. I would highly recommend them and will likely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Carpeted room in basement. The room had bare concrete, so they installed new tack strips, padding and carpeting.

THE BIDDING PROCESS WENT VERY SMOOTHLY. ARIC WAS ABLE TO SQUEEZE US INTO AN ALREADY BUSY SCHEDULE ON THURSDAY MORNING. WE WERE CONSIDERED RETURNING CUSTOMERS BECAUSE MY BROTHER HAD ALREADY CARPETED HIS HOME WITH EMPIRE AND WE WERE ORDERING THIS WORK DONE AS A SURPRISE BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR MY MOM WHILE SHE WAS OUT OF TOWN. BECAUSE OF THE FAMILIARITY, WE ALREADY KNEW WHAT CARPET WE WANTED. WE JUST NEEDED TO CHOOSE THE COLOR. WE CHOSE THE SUBTLEY NATURAL FRISE. THEY BEGAN THE WORK THE NEXT DAY FRIDAY AND FINISHED SATURDAY AFTERNOON. WE DID HAVE SOME ISSUES GETTING THE INSTALLERS OUT TO THE HOUSE SO I RECOMMEND GIVING THEM MAP QUEST DIRECTIONS IF YOU LIVE OUT IN THE OUTER REACHES OF SUBURBIA. WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF DISCOUNTS OFFERED BY CHOOSING ONE COLOR FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT AND PAID IN CASH RATHER THAN FINANCING. THE CREW WAS FRIENDLY AND KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING. I WOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER THEM FOR OTHER JOBS. THEY DID LIVE UP TO THEIR ADVERTISING OF NEXT DAY INSTALLATION.

THE CARPET IMMEDIATELY SMELLED UPON INSTALLATION. I WAITED A MONTH FOR THE SMELL TO GO AWAY. I CALLED THEM AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING BEFORE I GOT THE CARPET CLEANED. I DID THIS AND IT DID GET A LITTLE BETTER. HOWEVER, THE SMELL IS STILL THERE AND IT IS MAKING BOTH ME AND THE CAT SICK. I HAVE TO HAVE THE WINDOWS OPEN ALL THE TIME. I CALLED THEM AND TOLD THEM THAT IT WAS CLEANED. WE MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN INSPECTION AND HE TOOK SOME SAMPLES AND MADE A REPORT. THEY WILL NOT TELL ME WHAT IS ON THE REPORT AND TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM, "THIS IS NOT AN EMPIRE PROBLEM." AMONG MANY OTHER ISSUES TOO NUMEROUS TO LIST HERE, I FOUND A STRIP OF CARPET IN OUR WASHING MACHINE, A LARGE RAZOR BLADE IN A FLOOR VENT THAT I NEED TO FIX BECAUSE THEY BENT IT, PLUS OUR DOG HAD TO STAY OVERNIGHT IN A KENNEL BECAUSE WE KEPT FINDING LOOSE STAPLES (MORE THAN 50) IN THE CARPET THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE. ADDITIONALLY, THERE WERE LARGE GOUGES TAKEN OUT OF THE WOODWORK THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE TO EXPRESS MY DISSATISFACTION AND AFTER MORE THAN AN HOUR ON THE PHONE, A CUST SERVICE MANAGER WAS ONLY AUTHORIZED TO CREDIT ME $229! I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT OUR HOUSE WAS BEING LISTED FOR SALE THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AND I WANTED THE LOCAL INSTALLATION MANAGER TO COME SEE HOW THE INSTALLERS LEFT OUR HOUSE BUT WAS TOLD HE WAS TOO BUSY AND WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO MAKE IT UNTIL LATER THE FOLLOWING WEEK. I ENDED UP HAVING TO TAKE A DAY OFF FROM WORK TO CLEAN EVERY ROOM IN OUR HOUSE, PLUS THE GARAGE, DRIVEWAY AND LANDSCAPING IN ORDER TO RETURN OUR HOUSE BACK TO ITS PRE-INSTALLAT
Description of Work: REPLACED 2000 SQ FEET OF CARPET AND PAD. FURNITURE WAS MOVED DURING THE INSTALLATION FREE OF CHARGE. WE CHOSE EMPIRE OVER OTHER COMPANIES BECAUSE WE REALLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH ARIC, ONE OF EMPIRE'S SALESMEN. HE WAS PLEASANT TO WORK WITH, HIS ESTIMATE WAS CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN OTHER COMPETITORS, AND HE DIDN'T CHARGE FOR MOVING FURNITURE. WE'RE HAPPY WITH THE QUALITY OF THE CARPET, HOWEVER OUR INSTALLATION EXPERIENCE WAS HORRIBLE. TO BEGIN WITH, WHEN I CALLED THE MORNING OF THE FIRST DAY (IT WAS A TWO-DAY JOB) TO FIND OUT WHEN TO EXPECT THE INSTALLERS, I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD ARRIVE SOMETIME BETWEEN 8AM AND 6:30PM. ONCE THEY DID ARRIVE THE INSTALLERS ABSOLUTELY TRASHED OUR HOUSE, GARAGE AND DRIVEWAY AREA. THEY REMOVED THE OLD CARPET AND PERFORMED A ''CURSORY'' VACUUMING OF THE NEW CARPET (WITH MY VACUUM CLEANER) WHICH YOU COULDN'T REALLY TELL THEY DID BECAUSE THE VACUUM BAG WAS FULL AND THEY DIDN'T CHANGE IT, EVEN THOUGH I SET OUT EXTRAS FOR THEM.

THE APPOINTMENT WAS FOR AN EVENING. THE SALES PERSON CALLED THE HOME NUMBER DURING THE DAY AND SAID 'OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE NOT HOME SO YOU WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE''. WHEN I GOT THE MESSAGE I IMMEDIATELY CALLED. THEY COULD NOT GET IN CONTACT WITH THE SALES PERSON, A SECOND APPOINTMENT WAS SET AND HE DID NOT SHOW. THE SALESPERSON AND THE MANAGER WOULD NOT RESPOND OR RETURN ANY PHONE CALLS. I HAD TO CALL OVER 15 TIMES AND STILL THEY NEVER SHOWED FOR THEIR APPOINTMENTS. I AM STILL WAITING FOR A CALL BACK FROM THEM. (IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN)

HE DID A BASICALLY GOOD JOB. IT LOOKS NICE, BUT WE DO HAVE A DOOR ON THE THIRD STEP FROM THE BOTTOM THAT DOES NOT CLOSE ALL OF THE WAY. IT IS SOMETHING WE CAN LIVE WITH, BUT DETRACTS FROM THE GRADING. I GAVE THEM A "C" FOR RESPONSIVENESS, BECAUSE I HAD TO RESCHEDULE THE APPOINTMENT AND RECEIVED MESSAGES FROM TWO DIFFERENT NUMBERS TO CONFIRM TWO DIFFERENT DATES. I CALLED EACH OF THE NUMBERS AND FOUND ONE NUMBER WAS LINKED TO THE CONFIRMATION DEPARTMENT, WHICH DID HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE CHANGES IN THE SCHEDULE. THE OTHER NUMBER, WHICH HAD SAID THE CHANGE HAD BEEN MADE, BUT IN FACT HAD NO AUTHORITY TO MAKE ANY CHANGES IN THE SCHEDULE.

THE SALESMAN WAS ON TIME, VERY POLITE AND HIS PRICES WERE THE BEST. THE INSTALLERS WERE ON TIME AS WELL, THEY COULD DO A BETTER JOB OF CLEANING UP AFTER THEMSELVES. ONE COMPLAINT IS THE SALESMAN REQUIRED A $100 DEPOSIT IN ORDER TO KEEP OUR QUOTED PRICE. WE THEN RECEIVED TOO MANY CALLS (AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK) FROM THEIR TELEMARKETING DEPT. IN CHICAGO, IL TO SCHEDULE AN UNSOLICITED INSTALL. IT WOULD HELP TO KNOW UP FRONT THAT THIS WOULD BE APART OF THE SALES PROCESS. IT WAS TRULY ENOUGH FOR ME TO SAY NO THANKS AND TAKE MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE.

OUR SALESMAN WAS UNPROFESSIONAL, COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW LITTLE MONEY HE MADE SELLING CARPET. HE SOLD US CARPET, THAT WE WERE LATER TOLD, WAS OFTEN FLAWED AND GIVEN TO PROBLEM DURING INSTALLATION. HE MEASURED INCORRECTLY, SO THAT THE INSTALERS ARRIVED WITH CARPET THAT WAS CUT INCORRECTLY AND COULD NOT BE INSTALLED. THE CREW RETURNED 4 TIMES, BEFORE THEY COULD ACTUALLY INSTALL THE CARPET. THE CARPET WAS INSTALLED VERY POORLY. THE DAY AFTER INSTALLATION, THE CARPET BEGAN PULLING UP AROUND THE EDGES. THE CARPET HAD A 4 INCH WHOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT AND A FLAW ABOUT 4 FEET LONG DOWN THE CENTER. THE STAIRS BEGAN TO UNRAVEL AND WERE INSTALLED SO AS TO LOOK LIKE A PATCH WORK QUILT. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH POOR WORK. AFTER 3 WEEKS OF REPEATED CALLS TO A INASTALLATION MANAGER THEY AGREED TO SEND ANOTHER SALESMAN OUT TO HELP US PICK ANOTHER CARPET AND REINSTALL IT FOR FREE. THE SALESMAN TOOK AN ADDITIONAL 2 WEEKS TO CALL US AND COME OUT. THE CARPET WAS EVENTUALLY REPLACED.
Description of Work: A SALESMAN CAME TO OUR HOME TO SHOW US CARPET. HE MEASURED THE AREA AND WROTE THE ORDER. A CREW CAME BACK TO INSTALL THE CARPET AT A LATER DATE.

WE CALLED THEM BECAUSE OF THEIR 800# AD WHICH PROMOTED 'ORDER TODAY, INSTALL TOMORROW'. WE WERE SKEPTICAL, BUT WE HAD DONE OUR HOMEWORK AND GOTTEN OTHER ESTIMATES AND EMPIRE'S PRICE WAS LOWER. OUR SALESPERSON, JODY, CAME ON A FRIDAY AND WE COULD HAVE HAD OUR CARPET THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. BECAUSE WE WEREN'T READY YET, WE HAD IT INSTALLED THE FOLLOWING FRIDAY. BEING BEFORE CHRISTMAS, EVERY OTHER CARPET INSTALLER SEEMED TO BE BOOKED INTO JANUARY, SO EMPIRE'S QUICK TURN AROUND WAS VERY ATTRACTIVE. JODY WAS WONDERFUL. SHE CAME WITH HER SAMPLES AND SAT DOWN ON THE BARE LIVING ROOM FLOOR WITH US, RATHER THAN GO TO A TABLE 'BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE IT'S GOING TO BE, YOU SHOULD LOOK AT IT HERE'! KEN AND JOHN, THE CARPET INSTALLERS, WERE ALSO WONDERFUL. THEY WERE HARD WORKERS, PUNCTUAL, PLEASANT AND CAREFUL. THEY WERE PROFESSIONAL, YET VERY FRIENDLY, AND THEIR RESULTS ARE EXCELLENT. WE ALSO ARE VERY PLEASED AND LOVE OUR CARPET!
