Design Effects

Kerry Bauer with Design Effects did a beautiful job refinishing our 1959 maple veneer kitchen cabinets. He was extremely conscientious, listened to what we were looking for and improved upon it by adding his expertise in wood and design. I explained how I always wanted dark cherry cabinets, but realized that was not possible with our small galley kitchen and the other existing woodwork. I asked if it would be possible and tasteful to make the trim at the top of the cabinets a dark cherry color. He thought it was a good idea and also suggested adding a dark cherry trim piece under the top cabinets to tie it together. We love the results. It went from having cabinets that were cleaned up, but the same, to having updated looking cabinets that pop. Kerry had his work cut out for him, because of the wear and tear on the cabinets over the years. When I found out the cabinets were only a maple veneer I wondered if it was worth refinishing them. He assured me it would turn out nicely, but he would have to be careful not to sand too deeply. We would hire Kerry again without hesitation.

Hired Design Effects to remove textured ceiling in bathroom which was falling down due to moisture and condensation from skylight. Kerry was able to provide recommendations for the paint color and type and give suggestions for the scope of work. Kerry and crew removed the old texture, mudded and sanded the ceiling and recessed skylight area, touched up some amateur drywall work on one wall, painted the ceiling, and prepped and painted the whole bathroom (decided to be necessary to give clean ceiling corners because of the rough edges the removed texture left). The end result was outstanding.

Overall, I was very pleased with Kerry's work. Because of the weather and bigger clients that bumped us, our job lasted longer than he expected (I believe he said 5 days originally, but it took about a month start to finish). But we told him we weren't in a rush. I inspected the work continuously and he was always happy to change or fix anything I pointed out, which was a big plus in my book. He was very easy to work with.

Kerry was so good at helping us choose an exterior color when we had him paint our house, that we hired him to help us choose our interior colors. Well worth the money! We were going crazy trying to get colors to match, but Kerry took care of us in an hour, 5 different colors. We'll probably get him back here for the bottom floor.
