Description of Work: I HAD A LANDSCAPE REVISION, TAKING OUT AN OLD OVERGROWN CENTER ISLAND AND SEVERAL TREES AND SHRUBS, PLUS STONES, REMOVING OLD FOUNDATION PLANTINGS, ALONG WITH OLD WOODEN TIES. HE INSTALLED A FOUNDATION GARDEN WALL, EDGEING, STONE WORK AROUND A BRICK WALKWAY, PLANTINGS, AND GRADED THE LAWN AND PLANTED SEED. UNFORTUNATELY I KNEW HE WOULD BE GONE FOR A WEEK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT. DEMOLITION WENT ok, THOUGH THE GROUND THIS YEAR WAS WET AN THE MACHINERY LEFT BIG RUTS. THE STONE EDGEWORK AS IT UNFOLDED DIDN'T MATCH MY VISION OF LEVEL TERRACING AND A PLANNED SWITCH IN STONE TYPE FROM WALL STONE ON THE CORNERS TO SMALLER EDGERS ESTHETICALLY DIDN'T WORK, NOR WAS IT LEVEL, SO I HAD TO STOP THE PROJECT UNTIL DEAN RETURNED. I WASN'T SURE THE WORKMAN QUITE GOT THE PICTURE OF THE PLAN. THE PREVIOUSLY REMOVED CENTER ISLAND STILL HAD WEED BARRIER BENEATH LOTS OF OLD LANDSCAPE STONE COVERED OVER BY A THIN LAYER OF SOIL - I COULD EASILY UNEARTH THEM WITH ONE PULL OF A RAKE, AND SEED WAS TO GO ON TOP OF THIS. FURTHERMORE, THE EXCAVATED AREA HAD NOT BEEN FILLED IN SUFFICIENTLY TO BE LEVEL WITH THE SLOPE OF THE GROUND AS IT ROSE TO APPROACH THE HOUSE FOUNDATION. IN MY OPINION, AS A MAKER OF STAINED GLASS WINDOWS AND LAMPS WHICH REQUIRE TIGHT MARGINS BETWEEN PIECES, THE STONE MASON WAS NOT VERY GOOD. RIGHT ANGLE 90 DEGREE CORNERS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE HOLDING TOGETHER A BRICK WALKWAY WERE POORLY CHOSEN, CUT, OR ENGINEERED, RELYING ON SAND TO FILL THE MOST CRITICAL AREAS AND ANGLES. I APPRECIATE THE DIFFICULTY OF WORKING WITH NATURAL STONE, BUT THIS WAS MORE THAN JUST ACCOMMODATING NATURAL VARIATION. IN ANY EVENT, THIS ALL WAS STRAIGHTENED OUT, THE WALL REDESIGNED AND LEVELED, THE LAWN LEVELED, MOST STONES REMOVED, AND THE WALKWAY EDGERS REDONE. ALL IN ALL IT TURNED OUT WELL. CHANGES AND REVISIONS DONE AT NO EXTRA COST TO ME. DEAN CARED AND DID WANT IT DONE TO MY SATISFACTION. HOWEVER, HE HAS NOT STOPPED BY NOR COMMUNICATED WITH ME SINCE THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED. I DID REQUEST THAT SEVERAL MORE STONES BE ADDED TO ONE SECTION OF THE WALL TO GIVE IT MORE VISUAL IMPACT, BUT HAVE NOT HEARD BACK. LESSONS: MAKE SURE YOUR CONTRACTOR IS AROUND FOR YOUR ENTIRE PROJECT. RECOGNIZE THAT WHAT SOUNDS GOOD ON PAPER DOESN'T ALWAYS LOOK GOOD ON THE GROUND. WRITE DOWN ALL YOUR IDEAS AND TRY TO DRAW YOUR OWN RELIEFS, SO EVERYONE IS LITERALLY ON THE SAME PAGE WITH WHAT THE PROJECT SHOULD LOOK LIKE. I THOUGHT COMPARED TO OTHER PROJECTS AT MY OTHER PROPERTIES, THIS WAS A BIT PRICY, BUT I FAILED TO OBTAIN ANY OTHER BIDS, SO I CAN'T REALLY SIZE UP THE COST OF LOCAL COMPETITION. I WOULD WORK WITH DEAN AGAIN

Description of Work: charges by the hour, gave an estimate over email without coming to the house, competitive with the other estimate I got, but not lower. they showed up the morning after I engaged them, and came in right at the estimate. I cannot see into my gutters to assess the quality of the work, but they aren't overflowing anymore.

+ -1 moreWe did it all by email because we are living between two different states. He was prompt in his email responses. He emailed when they were done. They seemed to be clear because we have been having a lot of rain and haven't had any problems. I never met them face to face.

+ 2 moreWe originally hired him to re-work our large garden that had become overgrown due to neglect as my husband and I both had debilitating illnesses in the last 2 years. He advertised as a Master Gardener. We contracted his company to come each week and take care of things with a big "blitz" in the beginning of the season to plant, move plants, etc.. As an afterthought,we asked him to re-do our front step to be more attractive with slate and to raise our existing stone walkway to make the step-up easier for handicap accessiblity They did the step nicely but in the process of re-doing the walkway, they dug up plants and left them with roots exposed for several weeks and never did plant most of them. The ones they planted were incorrectly planted too high with roots exposed, or too deep causing rot. His crew planted a few annuals without even separating 4-packs...clearly no experience. The plants that he moved died as he decided to move them in the heat of the day and he didn't trim them back to lessen the shock. As soon as the hard-scaping was done, he promplty dropped us. We originally contracted him for the gardening help in February to ensure that we had the help when we needed it. He just took the higher priced job and promptly dropped us and didn't do the gardening. He couldn't even call, he informed us by e-mail. He then had the nerve to ask, again by e-mail, if he could take pictures of his stone step project. I believe his crew plants only new plants as part of a hardscaping project but there are no gardening skills that one could rely upon. I had even paid him in advance for the whole summer in good faith and as another motivator, I thought. Funny thing, he didn't return our money for several weeks after he dropped us. I think he intended to follow through but bigger paying jobs probably lured him away. Not really good business practice to "go back on your word".

+ -1 moreHe showed up at the job site and checked things out, answered questions for his crew, and asked us questions to make sure that they were doing what we wanted them to do. He gave us his opinion which I liked. The crew was quiet. They were good about moving everything out of the way and keeping our backyard clean while they were doing the work. They didn't smoke on our yard. They were able to do the job within a week and a half.
Description of Work: I used Dean Bjorkstrand to sod the lawn, and also do a paper patio for us.

+ -1 moreWe have had mixed results. The landscaping project was very expensive, and if it hadn't been an emergency I wish I would have shopped around more. I was not happy with the crew he had here. They didn't tell me that they were going to kill my plants, as I would have removed them. The cleanup wasn't very thorough, and when I pointed out something I didn't like he had the crew come back out to fix it and they made it worse. I would continue to use him for gutter cleaning, but I would not use them again for landscaping.
Description of Work: He cleans our gutters twice a year, and his company also did some landscaping, which included a retaining wall.

+ -1 moreI contacted Dean Bjorkstrand and he at first didn't see a problem with the dust "no one has ever complained on past jobs". We cleaned up the dust for an outdoor party only to have more stone work soil our deck, deck furniture, and our plants. The deck and brick walkway now have a whiter patina since this dust has worked into the pores of the surfaces. I talked to Dean again and he promised to clean up the dust after the work was completed. It's been several days since they've left and the dust hasn't been cleaned up. While we realize that they cannot control the wind, Dean should consider using wet stone grinding or a cutting tent to contain the dust. The airborne dust is a silicosis hazard to his workers, who were not wearing any respiratory personal protective equipment (PPE).
Description of Work: Dean Bjorkstrand did landscaping and stone walkway work at my next door neighbors house. During the dry stone cutting work heavy dust collected all over our landscaped plants, back lawn, brick walkway, our deck, and outdoor furniture.

BJORKSTRAND SAID THAT TYPICALLY A REGULAR GUTTER CLEANING RAN ABOUT 150 DOLLARS. I DESCRIBED MY HOUSE AND HE SAID THAT SOUNDED ABOUT RIGHT. THE SYSTEM IS THEY COME OUT AND CLEAN, THEN MAIL A BILL. THERE IS NO VISIT IN ADVANCE. PART OF THE BILL IS ALSO AN EXPLANATION OF WHAT THEY DID AND IF ANYTHING SPECIAL WAS NECESSARY. THERE WERE NO COMMENTS ON MY BILL; IT WAS A STRAIGHT FORWARD GUTTER CLEANING, BUT IT WAS 75 DOLLARS HIGHER THAN THE "AVERAGE". NEXT YEAR, I WILL TRY SOMEONE ELSE.
