Jim was nice and helpful during the estimate process, but where it fell apart was after the estimate and after we had agreed to go with them. They couldn't agree with my insurance company and it ended up stalling the job a few months, it was very frustrating and I had to send followups constantly to both sides. According to the insurance company they charged way too much, according to craftsman the insurance company was being cheap. Either way I was very frustrated. No one ever fixed my ceiling, not fun. When I basically said I'd have to go with someone else if we couldn't get it done they ended up giving me a new contract BUT they neglected to mentioned that they had to change the shingle to a lower grade one to get the price closer to the insurance company. This appears to have been an oversight by the company as they explained that they had a breakdown in communication and should have gone over the new contract changes with me. I recommend carefully looking at any contracts and Googling the shingle by the manufacturer ID to make sure you are getting what you want. The main problem was that our house needed a lighter shingle and that was an important reason I went with craftsman was because of this specific color and type of shingle I wanted. The new negotiated contract with the insurance company came with a lower grade shingle that doesn't come in that color. I refused the contract and we came to an agreement that we would then go with the original shingle after several back-and-forth e-mails on this. So I do appreciate that they did this, they made good on their mistake and I believe they even absorbed the cost difference because my insurance company wouldn't pay it. Overall I had little to no what was going on between the insurance and them, I still don't know what other modifications they made to cut the costs down as the roof color was the only thing that set off a flag for me. In the end they did make it right and I love how the new shingle looks. Aside from the complaints of the process, the end result looks fantastic and it appears to be of very good quality. The staff are friendly and I think part of my experience can be attributed to the volume of severe storms in that area and that they were just flat out busy. I am pleased that they fixed all their mistakes and being that this was my first roof I have no idea if this is normal for the industry or not. If this type of service is common I would probably go with them again, but I will shop around first.
Description of Work: I met with Jim for the estimate. I liked the materials they were using and that they were high rated. A bad storm had just torn through the area so there were a lot of shifty companies harassing me and I had obvious damage to the roof and siding. I needed new roof, siding on some areas, and gutters.

I called Craftsmen to replace the damaged siding on my garage as part of a condition for the sale of my house. Dan was able to find my file from when the siding job was done in 2008 so he could order the matching siding. He got it ordered, and as promised they came to do the work when the order was ready about 2 weeks later. Dan was communicative throughout the process--ensuring that I knew the status of the order, and the day they were going to come out to do the work. The work was done well, as had been my experience with them before--I will definitely give Craftsmen Home Improvements the opportunity to do a bid for the window and siding work I'll be needing on my new house within the next couple of years.
Description of Work: Repair/replacement of several pieces of siding on my garage that Craftsmen Home Improvements had installed a few years prior. The siding had been damaged by my lawn service.

Our roof had defective Certainteed shingles and needed to be replaced. We called Craftsmen for an estimate and we spoke to someone right away to schedule an appointment. I was glad to speak with a person right away. Several companies we called only had voice mail and we were instructed to "leave a message." Those companies were immediately dismissed from our list. After interviewing several other companies and getting estimates, we felt most comfortable with Craftsmen. Their quote was slightly higher than the other companies we interviewed, but not significantly. Overall, the process went smoothly and the communication throughout the process was great thanks to Jim and especially Joan. They were both very responsive and professional. Joan provides updates before, during and after the job -- she was great to work with and a real asset to the company. During the job, drip edge wasn't ordered even though it was indicated on the quote we signed. The roofing crew saw it indicated in the job instructions, but since it wasn't ordered/delivered when they showed up for the job, they didn't confirm why it was missing (and obiously didn't install it). I asked about this about half-way through the job when I came out to check on progress, and Jim noted it was their mistake. He returned after the roof was completed to install a replacement "sider's" edge. The crew was on time, fast and friendly -- the tear off and new roof was installed in a day. They did a good job of cleaning up the yard and protecting our landscaping. The gutter covers were installed the day after our roof was completed and so far so good. They've saved me from getting up on the roof in the fall to clean the gutters from all our maple leaves. I was really pleased with Craftsmen's flexibility on the gutter screens. They were honest and up-front about how effective some gutter screens are, and recommended Rhino as the option they've had the best experience with...they told me that after trying the Rhino screens, if I wasn't satisfied they would install a different product or refund my money. Our shingles came with a lifetime warranty from Owens Corning. The warranty was registered incorrectly with the manufacturer. I caught this when reviewing the warranty documentation. Joan was great about working with Owens Corning to update it quickly. All things considered, even with a hiccup with the drip edge, I would not hesitate to recommend Craftsmen Home Improvements. Clearly there's a reason they've been a Superior Service award winner for so many years in a row. They do good work and they stand behind it with a lifetime workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturer's product warranty. Definitely check them out if you're looking to replace your roof.
Description of Work: We hired Craftsmen Home Improvements to tear off our existing roof, replace with Owens Corning Duration lifetime shingles (50-year non-prorated warranty) and roofing system, install 1x4 boards to fix some rotted siding where it met the roof and install Rhino gutter covers. During the process, they also installed several additional roof vents to facilitate proper attic air circulation.

Jim arrived on time, was very knowledgeable about insulation and how best to outfit our older home, and prepared an estimate to complete the work we wanted to have done. We will probably hire them to do the actual work when we are ready to more forward.
Description of Work: After seeing their Big Deal coupon, I contacted them to see if my project could qualify. They offered to send someone out for a free consultation and estimate, after which they could determine if the coupon would be applicable. In the end, we did not meet the guidelines for the coupon, but we received a written estimate good through the winter.

Craftsmen was more expensive than the other quotes we received, but they were absolutely worth it. This company understands service better than any contractor I have met. Their adjuster Jim was quick to return calls and very helpful when discussing options. Once we decided to proceed, they gave us a dedicated office contact and she kept us informed at each step in the process. We knew exactly what to expect and Craftsmen delivered on their promises. We had one unfortunately issue where a worker's foot went through some rotted plywood and put a hole in our interior ceiling. While I was worried about the worker, Craftsmen was worried about our ceiling! They called and emailed to apologize, set us up with painter who could repair the damage, and they paid for the fix. I appreciate their dedication to service and will definitely use them again if a future roofing need arises.

The job went very well. From the time I connected with Jim Kosloski, discussed the Angie's groupon offer, and received the contract it was just a matter of days. The project was scheduled within a week and completed in just a few hours. I requested to not have the equipment for the insulation inside the house because of my son's allergies, and they said that wouldn't be a problem. They were able to keep all of the product and equipment outside and only had to be in the attic from inside when fixing the bathroom connection. By the time I got home, everything was clean up and there was no sign of any debris. They left the site as clean as they found it. I was very pleased with their service, professionalism, and quality. I've used Craftsmen Home Improvement in the past and will use them in the future.
Description of Work: Insulate attic with blown in cellulose was the original service. After the preliminary inspection, it was discovered that the bathroom vent was not connected, so they included that in the bid as well.

Erik one of the sales reps came by in early September to bid for the job. The estimate came in fairly in the middle and so we decided to go with Craftsman since Erik wasn't too pushy as most other sales reps. He told us what we need to know and the price was reasonable. We also took into consideration their ratings on Angie's list which had been great. Once we got the deposit down, we were informed that we wouldn't get new windows until DECEMBER which was much further out than we expected. In hindsight I wish we had asked the timeframe, but we assumed that it wouldn't have taken this long. Either way, we were just glad that it could be done before the coldest months of winter. December finally came around and our windows were installed. The window installation was without a hitch, this was probably my favorite part as they were able to come in and install in one day. We then find out that the window wraps wouldn't get done until a week later, again I suppose the onus was on us to ask for timing but too little to late. Kim, our customer rep was great at keeping us up to date. The windows over all turned out great. We had a couple of hiccups along the way, but Dan the owner has been true to his word and been great to work with. We're really happy with them and they are beautiful. So far I haven't had to use any sort of insulation like caulk or 3M saran wrap type things. Our house has been toasty since!

Chose this company because of their A rating. A few minor issues: The wrong model of sliding door was shipped and installed resulting in the opening being on the wrong side. This caused a delay but was rectified within a few weeks. Several pieces of trim needed needed some extra nailing. Some nails found outside in the rocks. The sliding screen door installed without one spring-loaded wheel. A small amount of spray foam was smeared on stepping stone. Workers were nice but for some reason, while working outdoors, every now and then, one of them would just let out a wild, loud scream into the neighborhood. Best part of the experience was Kim. She seemed to really care and would keep us informed about upcoming events. Better communication within the company would have eliminated some of the issues above. The owner Dan contacted me about these issues and was very concerned about my satisfaction and getting things resolved. Rob came out promptly and fixed all issues and I am now very happy.

I was conned by the first company (a long story and another review) and almost lost thousands of dollars in Insurance money. I was under pressure ( my storm date was in Sept. of 2010) so in order to find a more reputable company I joined Angie's List. The Craftsmen company had good reviews but were pretty booked. The Insurance Company was not willing to wait until the following Spring in order to get the work done. This company was able to start the siding the end of November and get the roof done before Christmas. Thank God we didn't have the snow we had during December of 2010. I also had them do some insulation and add more roof vents because I have 4 valleys in my home and I was having a lot of problem with ice dams. I had spent almost $2000 in ice dam removal and roof shoveling in Dec.2010 (another long story and review). I was disappointed due to the lack of snow last winter because I didn't get to see if the added insulation and vents helped. However, with this last storm on December 9th the insulation got tested. I did not have the icicles form the next day. I will continue to do roof raking anyway though. My only issues were that I wished I had been reminded the day before the siding was started about taking things off the wall. Also I wished I had been told what things were not being covered (there had been several estimates of what the Insurance was going to pay for) so I could had the option to pay for those things out of pocket. All in all a good experience. Dan the owner was easy to deal with and quickly addressed any issues I had. The company that was used to replace my garage door was poor to address a concern I had after installation but Dan stepped in and someone (sorry I can't remember his name) came out from his company and made an adjustment in the door.

We first had someone come out to give us an estimate. He was friendly and professional. We had to take some time to consider the estimate as we found out that we would be spending a lot more than $150 and did not want to just throw that money away. The crew, as I recall, was on time, but there were A LOT of people and I never really did find out why there were so many, especially when there appeared to be a couple that just sort of "hung out". While the service was somewhat expensive we feel like we got a good final product and have piece of mind that we have sufficient insulation. My only "complaint" is that there was a fair amount of clean-up that I needed to do. Perhaps it was because it was insulation that was blown in.

Thank you for this report and I am glad that you are happy with the final product. In regards to your mention that there was a lot of guys on the job, sometimes we may have more manpower than is needed for a smaller job. Some days our insulation crew will do two or three jobs in one day and we may have additional manpower with them for a larger job they are doing that day. We try to have enough manpower on each site so that we will get the job completed in a timely manner for our customers. We are so sorry that you were disappointed with the clean up, we try to leave each home as clean or better then when we arrived. Dan Bydlon Owner

I really can't say enough good things about Craftsman Home Improvements Our house had original 8" cedar lap siding from the 1970s. It either needed to be completely replaced or repaired and repainted. I solicited 4 quotes from various siding companies and a couple of estimates for repair and painting. From the start, I felt comfortable with Erik Daiehlin, the salesman from Craftsman. I didn't feel pressured and gained confidence in his expertise. I felt like he was focused on finding the proper solution rather than just making the sale. The quote was timely, and very detailed. During the process I added the deck flooring to the job. Through out my search for a supplier, Erik stayed in contact without "stalking" me. The Craftsman quote was somewhat higher than the other quotes. My purchasing philosophy is to find a high quality for a fair price. I've paid the "cheap" prices before only to get low quality. Erik was flexible in getting the price down to a fair point as compared to other quotes. Craftsman worked closely with me on the scheduling. They sent out their foreman to appraise the job before work began. Craftsman was flexible in arranging the cedar removal and barrier wrapping so that the trim painting crew could power wash before the siding was installed. The crew arrived very early the day work started. The foreman introduced himself and wanted to know if I had special instructions...we circled the house discussing how the job would proceed and asking for my input. I found the crew very professional and hard working. They were precise and worked as a team. I didn't want to hover over them too much, but you could say I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Whenever I questioned or pointed out an issue, the reply was always friendly and cooperative. They acted just as interested in doing the job to my satisfaction as I was. I was very impressed by the performance of the crew, arriving at 6:30am and leaving at 7;00pm. Before leaving the job, the whole area was policed and cleaned up. The job was completed with in a week. Following the siding, I needed to get the deck flooring installed before cold weather. The decking crew was in demand and the schedule moved them back to late October. I was very pleased when Craftsman understood my concerns about completing the work sooner. After asking me wait a few days to see what could be done, they were able to schedule the work 2 weeks earlier. Just as with the siding, the workmanship was top notch. They made adjustments to the stairs and railings in addition to the new decking. I am extremely pleased with the job Craftsman did. The house looks outstanding with the Hardie board. And the deck looks brand new. Through out the process, the owner, Dan Bydlon stayed in contact with me. Even a month after completion, I inquired about an oven vent cover location. He did some research, called me back, and sent a man over to add the solution to the vent cover. I am very impressed by the professionalism, integrity, and genuine desire to please the customer! ....... I am not easy to please. Craftsman exceeded my high standards. I wish all the services I purchase could be up to Craftsman's standards.

When Jim came to do my estimate, he spent a lot of time making sure he understood what was needed and thoroughly answered my questions about types of venting and the different shingles. I wanted to update my insulation as well and they were able to open up the roof once they had the old shingles off and add the insulation then. He also suggested adding a fan to the upstairs bathroom while they had the roof open, which saved money on the installation. The fan installed was good quality. They worked with me on scheduling, were prompt and did a great job on the installation and the cleanup. They hung tarps over my shrubs to make sure they weren't damaged during their work. When they were gone I could barely notice they'd been there except for the new roof. A couple of other companies had a slightly cheaper price, but the difference wasn't a lot. I would say Craftsman's price was pretty standard was well worth it for the service and quality I got as well as the ability to have one company handle both the roof and the insulation. I would definitely work with them on other projects and highly recommend the company.

This was a demanding and challenging project-- significant square footage and a high-pitched roof structure with angular elevations. Craftsmen Home Improvements was more than up to the job every step of the way. Our initial meeting with Jim Kosloski and his resulting proposal convinced us that Craftsmen had the expertise to handle the job in a thorough and professional manner and we weren't disappointed. We were thoughtfully guided through the materials selection process (shingles, gutters, etc.). Two days before work was scheduled to begin we received a 'project outline' briefing paper that provided us with a complete overview of what to expect and when, from deliveries of materials and dumpsters through the permit and inspection process to handling deck furniture, potted plants and grills. Our project began in mid-October with a weather pattern that featured rain for several days running. The resulting scheduling challenges were very frustrating for the crew. However we always received timely information when weather conditions interrupted the planned work schedule. We couldn't have expected more. Throughout the project, the work crew took measures to assure that plant material surrounding both structures were well protected and that all work-related debris was removed at the end of each day. Craftsmen also came to the rescue by replacing sections of cedar siding damaged by woodpeckers--a situation that was evaluated as the roofing project progressed. Craftsmen Home Improvement, Inc. is a multi-talented group, very customer oriented and we feel fortunate to have had them handling this very significant home maintenance project.

I'm sure their are other companies that would have jumped on the hail damage claim to get the easy business. Jim's honesty about the condition of our roof really shows the honesty and integrity behind Craftsmen. This company really instilled a sense of "trusted exclusivity" in my mind.
Description of Work: We had our home inspected and the inspector pointed out that their might me hail damage. We called Craftsmen to come out and take a look at our roof which consisted of cedar shingles. Jim the estimator looked the roof over completed and then informed us that that in fact the roof did not hail damage. He also informed us that though the roof was old, he didn't think it needed to be replaced at this time. His opinion resulting in us not replacing the roof but instead just doing some minor maintenance.

We sent an email to Craftsmen Home Improvements to describe our project and requested a quote. Within 24 hours, Erik D. had contacted us and set up an appointment. He stopped over and quickly took some measurements and discussed the project with us. He had a thorough understanding of James Hardie siding and how it needs to be installed. It was nice to work with someone that wasn't just a salesman. He was low pressure and easy to work with. He quickly emailed us a quote. Their quote ended up being in the middle of the three quotes we received. We liked their approach and timeline so we went with them. We were lucky that they had a crew that was available to start within a week. The owner, Dan, gave us updates throughout the process including when we could expect the dumpster to arrive, when the workers would start, how long it would take, and even when they would pick up the dumpster. We always knew exactly what was going on during the project. The workers were very polite and willing to answer any questions. We are thrilled with the end result and would definitely recommend Craftsmen Home Improvements!
Description of Work: Our house has steel siding on the back-facing sides and the front-facing sides had cedar siding. The cedar siding was getting old and rotten. The woodpeckers loved it but we needed to get it replaced. We decided to get it replaced with James Hardie fiber cement siding.

Overall, I had a great experience. I worked with Jim Kozloski to do the estimate and general coordination, and I was pleased that he was able to come over very quickly after my initial inquiry, so we could begin the process of doing the estimate. Jim was great at answering my many, many questions about roofing, windows, insulation, etc., and with coordinating with Pella for the window replacement and the insurance company and adjuster for the hail damage claim. There were a few delays in the process due to tight schedules on Jim's part, some delays on the insurance company's part, and a delay in getting an energy audit on my part. As a result, although we first started talking in August, the roof wasn't put on until mid-December. The wait was a little frustrating, but very understandable given all the factors we were working with. I also had a great experience working with Joan (who coordinated the roofing work) and Kim (who coordinated the window work). Plus I'd like to give a shout-out to the guys who replaced my roof in December weather (they set up a heated tent to work in), and the guys (Tom and Matt, and others?) who did the window and insulation work. Overall, everyone was really good to work with. The few things that were problematic were handled nicely by Craftsmen. The biggest issue we ran into was the fact that the windows were not easy to crank in and out after they were installed, due to some settling in my front porch (the usual "older home" problems). As I recall they spent a fair amount of time working that one out, which I appreciated. Again, overall I'm very happy with the job that Craftsmen did, and would hire them again.
Description of Work: Craftsmen Home Improvements did a fair amount of work on my home in late 2011 and early 2012, mostly based on a hail damage insurance claim. They completely replaced my roof with Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, replaced fascias and gutters around the house, added some additional insulation to the roof area of the house, added a bathroom fan, and replaced seven casement windows in my front porch. This was a long job, which stretched over several months due to dealings with the insurance adjustor, and the fact that the roof and window work were completed as separate jobs (it took longer for the windows to come in). The roof, fascia, gutters, insulation and bathroom fan were done in December 2011, and the windows in February 2012.

Jim was a bit late when he met with me (and my husband once he got home) to give the estimate, but he called and let me know when he expected to arrive, so it was very minor. He explained the work needed clearly and answered all of our questions. Joan (who was the representative responsible for coordinating our project) was extremely responsive and helpful. She communicated clearly about the details, and sent out the sample boards of shingles for us to review very quickly. When it became clear that more replacement decking was needed than had originally been estimated, Jim let us know quickly, and explained what the additional costs would be. The crew was very prompt and efficient, and did an excellent job cleaning up during and after the job. The new roof looks great and we're very happy with it! Everyone we worked with was very pleasant and responsive. They made the job as easy as possible on us; we did not have to make arrangements for permits, the dumpster, or inspections. We would definitely use them again and recommend them to our friends.
Description of Work: Our roof needed extensive rafter repair (due to broken rafter tails) and replacement decking, as well as new shingles, soffit boards, and new gutters on one side.

Jim Kosloski of Craftsmen Home Improvements came soon after my initial call and explained the work clearly and patiently, answering all my questions. His initial bid came in quite a bit higher than the four other contractors I had contacted, but reduced the price to a point (still a bit high) that I could agree to. They came recommended not only by Angie's List but also by a personal acquaintance who had used them, and my experience with the firm fully met my expectations. They met my tight scheduling needs, though the week they started was the only rainy week after a dry sunny fall. The job scheduled to take 2-3 days was extended between showers throughout the week. Jethro's team was terrific: besides being thoroughly professional they were also the nicest guys you could wish for. They were hard-working and managed to work even under the constant threat of showers; they came and finished up their work on a Saturday, and came back to clean-up on Monday (one of them even came on Sunday morning!). Jim's estimates proved to be correct and the price we agreed to was what I ultimately paid them. Jim managed to coordinate his schedule with my insurance assessor and as a result I was partly compensated since the cause of my initial worries was wind damage to parts of the roof--which was also about 20 years old. Joan Ciesler in the office kept me up-to-date with the
Description of Work: Roofing of 1916 residence: tear-off of old shingles, installation of new shingles (Corning Duration), roof vents, ridge vents, chimney flashing, gutter drip edge, and a new rubber cover for a flat part of the roof. This was a complex and steep roof and another contractor declined the job for safety reasons.
