Description of Work: We own a small Cape Cod house with two stories and a finished basement. Craftsmen Home Improvements installed additional attic insulation for us up to the maximum (R-49) and replaced all the insulation in a crawl space used as a closet with thicker batting. They did an excellent job, and we have seen a 15% drop in our gas bill since then, with CenterPoint now rating us as most efficient compared with our neighbors. Within two days, we also noticed that the temperature remained more constant throughout the house instead of being really hot upstairs when the thermostat was set to make the downstairs comfortable. We had had bad ice dams earlier in the winter and noticed some improvement, though we should be able to see more evidence of this next winter. We had attended a Center for Energy and Environment workshop at our local park building and had a home inspection, including a blower test, in December. The inspection resulted in the recommendation to increase our attic insulation, which we were already planning to do. Because Craftsmen was not one of the three vendors approved by CEE, we didn't qualify for one of the CEE rebates; the contract price above did include a 10% senior discount, however, and we had purchased a $500 Groupon for $150 for the insulation work, which brought Craftsmen's price to $1,225. We were also able to get a CenterPoint rebate of $350, reducing the price further, and Dan Bydlon, Craftsmen's owner, and Joan in the office couldn't have been more helpful in providing the needed paperwork. Joan also sent us the manufacturer's certification for the insulation material so we can secure the tax deduction for 2011. An email to Craftsmen requesting an estimate was returned by Dan within 24 hours; the other three vendors I had contacted in December (all on the CEE list) never replied at all. Jim came out to inspect the attic and crawl space on January 6 and was extremely thorough, friendly, and helpful. He explained things to us very clearly. He used an infrared reader to look for cold spots, took photos for us of the attic using my camera, and let us get an infrared reading of our dogs, which was really fun. (They really do have cold noses!) The only downside was that on the day of the installation, the team was delayed a couple times and couldn't get to our house until the evening, when it was really dark. They came prepared with lighted helmets, however, which delighted a neighbor toddler watching the truck arrive from a house across the street. They were very efficient and cleaned up thoroughly. I had asked them to be especially careful in the hallway, as we had just redone the walls with new paper, and they were especially conscientious about this. We have since inspected the work in the crawl space, and it is impeccable. Every person with whom we interacted from Craftsmen was incredibly cordial and conscientious. Jim had told us that this was the company culture, and he wasn't kidding. Dan called us a few times before, during, and after the installation to see how things were going, and I always felt that he was fully informed of what his workers were doing and how. We wouldn't hesitate to use Craftsmen again given the opportunity.
