Very well. The only glitch was getting the phone call when it was ready to be picked up. Their records indicated they had left me a message, but that wasn’t the case. As a result, I was without my PC 4-5 days longer than necessary. The work performed, however, was great.
Description of Work: Was unable to use my PC due to an error message. I brought it into the shop. They fixed the problem and it has been working fine ever since.

It was bad. I spoke with one person when I brought the computer in, and a few other people as they were doing the work. Eventually, they told me the motherboard was destroyed. I had asked them to pull out the hard drive. Then I went in to pick it up. I'd had identity theft issues in the past. The owner told me that many different techs (?!) had worked on the computer, and that the guy who had thrown out my computer was on vacation and he was the one who knew where hard drive was placed. The owner said he'd 'tore the place apart' trying to find my hard drive, but would check with the guy who pulled it when he returned from vacation. I never received a call. When I called a week or so later when I thought the guy would be back from vacation, the owner said my hard drive never turned up. They didn't charge me. However, what is all the personal information that was on the hard drive worth? And ... why did they pass my computer around to multiple different techs? Each was nice to deal with, but I would NEVER bring any computer back there again - I want ONE person to follow the job through, not l0 ... and I still wonder where my hard drive is with all my personal info. I had to sign on for an ID protection plan after that happened - $l5 a month! The fee would have been $99, and the fee was comped when they lost the h.d. I would rather they returned my hard drive!
Description of Work: My HP Envy computer was only a year and a half old, but stopped working - there was a whirring sound, but computer would not run. The computer sat in a 'pampered' place and was always plugged into a good quality surge protector.

Sadly, the laptop was dead and because of its age and cost of repairs, Chipheads said it was not worth fixing. They explained everything clearly, no multi-syllabic tekkie terms that left me wondering what they said. I asked them to offload the data onto an external drive and they did, no extra charge. What I especially like is that they all listen and I've found their responses tailored to what I asked (what a concept!). The next day I asked their advice on model of replacement laptop and they helped me make a decision. I've recommended them to friends and they've thanked me as they were pleased with the service, too.
Description of Work: I brought in a laptop that worked the night before and when I awoke the next day, displayed nothing.

In a word, great! After a great deal of research, I had created a list of most of the components I wanted for a custom-built computer to use with the X-Plane flight simulator program. Max, who is a flight simmer himself, offered advice to help complete the list. Then, after I had delivered the components to the shop, he built and tested the computer and installed the Windows operation system and the X-Plane program. He stress-tested the system to make sure it worked okay. Considering how much time and money saved over building the computer myself--I'd never done that before--it was well worth the price. The system is working great, and when I had a followup question, Max responded to my email within a couple of hours. Thanks, everyone!

Flawless. It was a simple vanilla-type install, but the technician had everything set up and working perfectly with all old stuff packed in his van in less time than it would have taken me to unpack items and read all the instructions. Well worth the price for the not very techie person.

Tech looked at it the same day (earlier than promised). He recommended removing some antivirus software, and de-fragmenting the hard drive. He replaced antivirus software with free ware product. When I picked up the computer within 48 hours of drop off, the computer worked much faster, and has worked fine ever since.

Great. The employee was honest, something that I dont get from a big box store. Even though they gave me bad news, I trust them and will take my computer problems to them in the future. I am skeptical of the Geek Squad at Best Buy, so I didnt go there. But this place takes their time with you. They made sure I understood what was happenening and what I can look for in a new computer. You wont meet arrogant twerps just out of high school here, unlike the afore mentioned store.

It was fabulous! Chipheads diagnosed the problem, contacting us several times along the way. They have external hard drives, so no need for us to purchase one for a one-time use (as we have on-line back up and don't need another hard drive). They reloaded all the basic programs for us (Java, Adobe etc) as part of the service. Our computer was ready in the stated amount of time and has worked like new since we got it back. Love Chipheads!
Description of Work: Our desk top computer would freeze intermittently when we tried to boot up. We'd called the Geek Squad and several times had them work on our computer remotely. After fixing various minor problems and running several virus scans, they recommended we wipe the hard drive clean. Ouch. I physically took the unit to a Geek Squad location, where they concurred. In order to save any data on our hard drive, the Geek Squad wanted us to provide an external hard drive to transfer the data to, one that we'd presumably purchase at Best Buy. Plus we'd have to locate our original Windows discs to reload once the wipe was complete. We were not excited about either of these prospects. One of the Geek Squad techs recommended we try Chipheads.

They were extremely helpful and tried to save me money. I've also gone there before thinking I could repair a notebook, but they advised me against it. Reason, new parts like a motherboard and installation would cost me much more than my 5 year old notebook was worth. Looking back I really appreciate this honest advice. I have come to think of them exactly this way. Honesty, Fairness, Giving computer owners the best advice possible and not trying to nickel and dime us to death. A great place to do business. At one time recently too, one of the owners sat down with me for about half an hour or so and gave me detailed advice on what I would need to have built for a powerful video editing computer. I took all his advice, added some additional features to the machine. I am extremely happy with my new build.
Description of Work: We own a relatively new Toshiba Portege R-705 Notebook which I use for most of my writing on Google Plus and also for some volunteer computing work for Seti @Home and GPUGrid, two distributed computing projects where a few million volunteers use their extra computing power to hunt for signals from intelligent civilizations with a couple thousand light years of earth in the Milky Way. GPU Grid uses extra computer power to hunt for potential cures for diseases. I had finished up checking whether or not all the finished computing jobs had been sent in one night late and all was ok. My keyboard was fine, but I work in a darker room and may not have seen all the keys or if any had popped up and became lose. I closed the lid. The next morning, I got up and was getting ready to start work again and noticed my 6 key was missing. Only the key cap had come off. I looked on the floor for a while in our kitchen and found it. It looked undamaged so I tried to put it back on but it wouldn't stay. I took my notebook back to the Minneapolis computer store where I had bought it, thinking that they would repair this under my service contract with them but they refused, saying it was something they considered accidental damage. They said they don't replace key caps to me. They wanted to replace the entire keyboard on my notebook plus charge me a $69.00 estimate charge. I said whoa, that seems pretty steep to me. I knew keyboards for notebooks cost between about $75 to $100 and then there would be the estimate charge and maybe even labor. I said to myself, let's see if any company's sell just key caps. I found one that seemed good and would just charge me $7.95 for the key cap and it's mounting mechanism. They also had a lot of little tutorials online to show folks how to do it. Later on I called my insurance company because we have insurance riders on our home policy for theft. accidental damage, spills, etc. on some computers. They said that they would cover what happened and that I just needed to get a price from a repair shop. I took the notebook to Chip Heads and spoke to Max. He found the same key cap replacement business I did and also said it looked like my 6 key was undamaged except the key cap had come off. He looked at the key cap really carefully and noticed a tiny little dot of plastic in one corner underneath may have broken off. It was about 1/20th the size of a match head. He tried to put the key cap back on and it wouldn't work. Then we talked for a little bit and he agreed to order the key cap for $7.95. He said it might not work, but we'd try. We agreed that they'd just charge me a minimum shop fee of $29 for the work. If the new cap didn't work, we might have to get a keyboard. I said ok. He wrote me an estimate and I decided just to pay them the $37.00. They have done a couple little things like this before for me and charged me nothing. So, I was really happy to give them the money. A few days later the key cap came in. They called me and I drove over. It took 10 seconds for Max to put it right on for me and I stayed just perfectly. He said most notebook keyboards are much more seriously damaged than this and about 85% have to be replaced. I think he was happy for me and the folks that have a little mishap like me and don't have to pay a big charge for just a single key coming off.

Response from Chipheads Computer Repair Shops
After reading this review, I contacted the member on the telephone and we had a nice conversation. I immediately offered her a full refund, which she accepted. Here is the write up from her service receipt that we gave her at pickup: Problem: power issues and cracked screen, diagnose and call "Laptop Service Details Tested Hard Drive & Ram - both ok. After much troubleshooting, diagnostics, and inspection, concluded that power issues to be related from a failing GPU (graphics processing unit) on the motherboard. Machine would frequently give video related errors on boot, and as the machine became warmer and warmer, the duration it would function for would decrease, eventually locking/crashing on boot. Due to cost, repair not pursued. Reassembled and offered customer a backup of data, but was not needed." I also asked for a more detailed description of the problem she had that caused her to give us a D rating on quality, since the techs that worked on the system couldn't recall any issues. What she told me was when she got the machine home, it wouldn't boot completely into windows. I asked her what she did to "fix" that problem since she indicated in her review that she fixed it herself, and she said she had moved the hard drive to a second computer so she could access her data. I also asked if she had called to see if we could offer follow up help once she discovered she was having problems, (we offer a 90 day warranty, 60 days longer than Geek Squad) and she said she did not, since she had decided not to use that computer anymore, so we did not have the opportunity to detect or correct any errors we may have made. We are happy to take responsibility for our part in the member's dis-satisfaction, refund her money and we would be happy to help her again in the future should she choose to give us another try. I dropped my laptop and the hinge holding the screen to the computer broke leaving the screen weakly connected. I wasn't sure whether to repair or replace it so I took it to Chipheads. They gave me information about how long it would take to get fixed and a rough estimate. I decided to repair the machine and took it in so they could order parts. They completed the exam needed to get parts numbers in a couple of hours and even made a temporary repair to hold the screen on until the parts arrive in a few days. It "ain't pretty" (yet) but it seems much more secure and allows me to use the computer more confidently while we wait for parts.

It was done in 4 days as promised and gave me lots of good information on how to maintain computer and data in the future. They could have hit me up for another 100 dollars for data recovery but didn't----I would not have known the difference and would have gladly paid it to get all of my files back----so that's a plus for honesty! I also asked dif it needed any other speed upgrades and they said no. They put a larger hard drive in (500 vs. 320GB) but I found that they didn't repartition it so 170gb ended up unassigned----- I had to bring it back for another day and picked it up that night---no charge. This happened because their usual imaging program, which automatically partitions, didn't work so they had to use another less used program----and the tech didn't catch the error. It did make a perfect clone though....I didn't have to do anything but plug it all back in and go. The only "sorry about this" I got was from a younger guy when I picked it up at 6pm....so I was glad for that but was still left looking for a bucket of sweet Martha's cookies or a free flash drive :) for the extra hassle. Instead I took 20 minutes of his time for more advise......all in all a good experience.
Description of Work: Could not boot up. Jason said that (my three year old barely used Dell)hard drive had failed and they would put a new one in plus recover as much data off the old one as possible.

Excellent! I have used Geek squad in the past, but no more. I highly recommend Chipheads!!
Description of Work: I had an old IDE hard drive that failed. It contained files I had not had a chance to back up. They were able to capture the files on the failed hard drive and then also placed them back onto a new hard drive that I had purchased some time back. Regretfully, they also had to re-install Windows, so I lost a number of programs that needed to be re-installed (I did not bring the disks, so I did this at home).
