Services we offer
Castle Building & Remodeling is truly a Design & Build Remodeler. We have a large repertoire including: Kitchens, Bathrooms, Attics, Basements, Design & Build Home Additions, Master Suite Additions, Second Floor Additions, and Interior Design Services.
When hiring Castle BRI for your special project needs, we truly shine in the following categories: Decks (including side entry decks), porches, windows, doors/storm doors, carpentry projects, drywall, demolition, framing, interior doors and trim, painting, and tile. We have some of the most skilled craftsmen anywhere in these disciplines on staff and they’re more than qualified to tackle these jobs for you. Finally, if your project requires little to no design work, then it most likely will be a great fit for our small projects team.
Services we don't offer
We currently do not handle exterior repairs (including 2nd story), concrete / flooring only, insurance restoration work, landscaping, roofing, detached garages, and small amounts of single trades like: masonry, painting, roofing, siding, electric, plumbing, and emergencies. We also do not handle things like plumbing, electrical, HVAC, flooring / exterior trim repairs.
If these issues came up mid project, our team would subcontract out those types of projects to our trade partners. Finally, small handyman jobs would also not typically be covered by our team.
We chose them because they are in the neighborhood. It is a very nice store. They are very helpful, very professional and knowledgeable.

The contractor arrived on time and did an excellent job. Original estimate was the job would take 7 work days to complete. The job was completed in 5 work days. Great care was taken to ensure the floor and staircase was properly covered to prevent harm to the floor. When the job was completed, care was taken to ensure everything was swept up and the bathroom put back in order.
Description of Work: removed old ceramic tile around tub and installed new ceramic tile. Also put down new under layment and put down ceramic tile on the bathroom floor. Since we have five living in the household and expand to 9 on the weekends. The contractor did everything he could to keep the toilet in place as long as possible.

We did not use the services of Castle Remodeling.
Description of Work: My family and I were in the area of the Castle Remodeling office on Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul earlier today, so we decided to walk in to see if we could get some help in designing our upcoming basement remodeling project. We did not have an appointment, but according to the signage, walk-ins are "welcome." As soon as we walked into the showroom, the designer (who was already working with another family) very dimissively asked us if we had an appointment. Of course, we said that we didn't but that we were hoping for a walk-in consultation. She was anything but "welcoming" to us, and told us that she was fully booked for the day and that "if we could make an appointment that would be great." Based upon the unfriendly way we were rebuffed, and the unprofessional manner in which we were "invited" to make an appointment, we will not be visiting Castle Remodeling again.

I am sorry your experience walking in to our St. Paul Showroom was so unpleasant. Walk-ins are always welcome, unfortunately we are not always able to consult with each walk-in depending on our schedule. Our goal is to be and act like professionals and I am sorry we did not live up to that. Because your experience was less than favorable I would like a second chance to start fresh. I would be glad to offer you a free conceptual basement design package. This would involve a (different) Castle designer coming to your home to look at your basement and talk about your desires for the remodeled space. We will then take measurements and before our second meeting in one of our design selection studios (St. Paul & Minneapolis) our designer will draw your space in our 3D CAD software program. Our designers will then create a layout with a floor plan and several key elevations. At the second meeting Castle's designers will review the design they created and talk about material selections and upgrades. You will be able to see what your project materials and labor would cost along with what the end result could be. The end result will be a customized basement remodel at a price you can afford. Please contact me Loren Schirber at 651-699-4164x2 if you are interested.

Poor communication. Poor response. Nice guy.
Description of Work: Filled out the online contact form on their website with detailed information about a bathroom remodel I wanted them to bid on. They didn't repond. Figured that mistakes happen, so I called them and was told that they did get my info but that they dropped the ball on getting back to me. Set up appointment for them to come out and gather info. They came out and we talked about the project Rep said he needed to have his heating guy come out and take a look at the project and that he'd call me with a time when they could come back out. They never called. Figured that if I had to pursue them this badly in the initial stages I would not be happy signing a contract with them.

I would like to apologize for the poor communication on both occasions that the member received. We attempt to run a professional organization and pride ourselves on professional customer service and on being good communicators. Obviously we did not live up to this standard in this instance. We are making improvements in our management oversight to ensure this doesn’t continue to happen. I understand your thinking when you say “Figured that if I had to pursue them this badly in the initial stages I would not be happy signing a contract with them”. Fortunately or unfortunately, we have been extremely busy producing projects. Jobs in production take precedence over potential jobs and due to the unexpected volume of bathrooms we are currently remodeling we have had more issues on front end of sales. Once again I would like to apologize for the poor customer service you received.

The Castle designers helped us design a new bathroom in our house. They provided several different layout options for a ¾ bathroom addition in an existing room in our house. Once we decided on a layout they provided us blueprints giving the finished dimensions and materials in blueprints (plan view, elevations, and 3d rendering) which we used for our project.

OUR BIGGEST ISSUE WITH THE COMPANY WAS THEIR TIMELINESS IN RESPONDING TO OUR QUESTIONS. IT WAS HARD TO CONTACT THE COORDINATOR OF THE PROJECT AND IT WOULD TAKE A FEW PHONE CALLS/EMAILS BEFORE HE WOULD RESPOND. THERE WERE A FEW ITEMS THAT WERE TO BE COMPLETED BUT WEREN'T BUT THESE WERE RELATIVELY MINOR. I THINK BY THE END WE WERE SO TIRED OF TRYING TO CONTACT THE COORDINATOR/MANAGER THAT WE JUST ENDED UP NOT ASKING THEM TO COMPLETE CERTAIN ITEMS. OCCASIONALLY THEIR WORKERS WOULD TINKER WITH OUR A/C OR LEAVE A FAIR BIT OF DUST BEHIND. THESE WERE ADDRESSED RATHER PROMPTLY.

We worked with their designer for a few weeks to come up with an ideal plan, and she was very helpful in visualizing what it would look like. She worked well with our budget and the existing space, was very receptive to our needs and offered good suggestions without "pushing" them. Gutting began the day after Labor Day and there was almost always something happening. Very few idle days. The subcontractors were all very clean and professional, completing work mostly on schedule. They really worked hard to get our job completed between Labor Day and Thanksgiving (new kitchen functional by then), and made sure all work was completed. Good follow-up on punch list items. This summer we had a problem with the central air - thought it might have been due to the electrical work since it blew the breakers. Castle's people came out and checked it over until they found the problem, which was NOT their fault, and were very helpful. No charge for that. This company was slightly more expensive than others. However, the promptness, professionalism, and generally excellent work quality made it well worth the extra. There was only one additional charge due to change orders, a small amount for re-staining a window frame to match the new woodwork. Castle ate the expense of a bigger electrical job than planned and some modifications that were required by building inspectors. I can recommend Castle very strongly. You owe it to yourself to put them on any list if you're considering a remodeling job.

They were very helpful, we like them a lot. We chose to go with a another company.
Description of Work: They came out and gave us a quote for two kitchen remodels and a basement remodel.
We had Castle provide an estimate for a basement remodel. Although we ended up going with a different service provider, we were very impressed with Loren's ability to turn around an estimate very quickly. He has a good sense for how to get a job done well and not overspend.
Overall, Castle Construction was friendly and very professional. We did not have work done by then since we were very dissatisfied with the estimate that we received. We were very clear what budge ($10K)we were working with and what our priorities where. I told them to bid out what our money could cover and stop there. At this point in the conversation, he brought out information for loan. I kindly told him no, that we wanted to pay cash and did not believe a loan was right for us or this project. While he was at our house, not once did he take out a tape measure. I am not sure how you can work up an accurate bid without measuring the space. The first estimate came in a $50k and only covered half of our priorities. For that price, I should had gotten a full basement remodel! When I replied back to reiterate that the budge was set and we would only consider bids at or below, he asked us if we could take some measurements (which he should have done when he came out). The second bid was on budget but we basically got nothing in comparison to other contractors. For the record, we completed the full basement remodel for $15k in comparison to their estimate of $50k
Description of Work: They came out to complete an estimate on partial basement remodel.

I would like to thank the member for their feedback. Castle obviously wasn't a good fit for the project and I should have taken better measurements while I was at the member’s home. We normally start with a ballpark estimate of approximate costs and measurements are not needed. I find it hard to believe that a licensed professional contractor could complete the full remodel (Remodel/makeover of basement, including new bedroom with egress window, separate laundry with new 3/4 bath, updated family room with gas insert fireplace and electrical issues brought up to code.) for $15,000. That is seems quite implausible. I can guarantee that the other contractor didn't use the same building methods or materials we initially proposed and suspect we are comparing apples and oranges.

Castle seems to be very well run and well equipped to meet the needs of customers. They also seem to care about the details. Although they did not do any work for us, I was impressed with the contact we had with them.
Description of Work: We were looking for a contractor to do a major basement remodel (including the basement bathroom), and called to get an estimate from Castle Building and Remodeling. The owner, Loren Schirber, came out to our house, looked at the space and met with us. We were very impressed with the company. They really seemed to have their act together regarding organization, scheduling and communication with customers. He left us a thick booklet with comprehensive information about the company and many pictures of previous projects similar to ours, in various price ranges. There were even references. We asked for a quote, and when it came, it was very detailed and every item was described and individually listed by estimated price. Communication was excellent. It was a difficult decision. We finally decided to use another contractor, but felt that Castle would have been excellent, too.

I looked at Castle based on the Angie's list ratings and the fact that it is one of two such remodelers in my neighborhood (that I know of). I choose them because their emphasis was on a dedicated start and complete date. They emphasized that they scheduled all the contractors ahead of time. the original schedule was 7 weeks from demo to functionality. AND the made the schedule. I've heard horror stories about delayed construction so this was huge to me. I knew the remodeling was going to be disruptive and I wanted a firm schedule. That was one of the reasons for choosing Castle. And they delivered, on time and on estimate. Was the process smooth, delightful and a joy? No. it was a good a a remodeling can be. They put up a plastic wall to minimize dust in my open plan house. The contractors all were respectful of the house and, to my knowledge, did not leave trash, use other parts of the house, or any of the things you hear about. I was assigned a designer who was extremely experienced in kitchen design. She came up with ideas I would never have thought of. She also was good at explaining the things behind the decisions that I should consider. I really appreciated that. The design process took a while but that was my speed at making decisions, not hers. I was also assigned a Project manager to coordinate the construction part. He was always reachable by phone whenever I had an issue. I had a schedule and knew when the cabinets were coming, when the painters were coming, etc. There was some problem matching my current paint and the painter was excellent at solving the problem. (I think my current paint was not mixed correctly when it was applied three years ago.) Overall they were very good. They aren't probably the cheapest remodelers but they were pretty much trouble free. What could they improve on? I think there was some conflict between the designer and the project manager, nothing either talked to me about, but it was there. The refinishing of the floors in my main floor created a ton of dust which I wasn't warned about or I would have thrown sheets over stuff. And finally the last couple items on the punch list kind of dragged out. I honestly think they got forgotten but I wasn't nagging at all and they realized it and took care of them. When I look at my beautiful kitchen, now that it is over, I think the complaints are really minor. It's just that a remodel is hard and disruptive. But over, all I give Castle a good rating and would use them again.
Description of Work: Castle did a remodel of my kitchen. Although I kept the same general footprint, they did remove a closet and incorporate that in the kitchen.

Poor customer service. Their website indicates that you can stop by on Saturday mornings at specific locations with your own drawings and pictures. I made detailed drawings and took many pictures in preparation. We attempted this on two separate Saturdays only to never find them open! We called them after the second failed attempt and it took them 4 days to return our call. When we finally talked to them we asked if we had misunderstood and they said we hadn't but that they would come out and do a complimentary estimate at our property. We met with a woman from the company who was not only 30 minutes early, but she did not seem comfortable or friendly. She did not ask many questions and basically took measurements/pictures without finding out what we were looking for in terms of function, pricing or features. She indicated that we would receive an estimate within a week to a week and a half. We have not heard ANYTHING from the company. If I am undertaking a major remodeling project on my house, I want to use a company that is responsive, punctual and accessible.

Unfortunately, Castle did deliver poor customer service to this potential client. Since receiving this feedback we have updated our website to reflect that Saturday consultations are by appointment. Our company records indicate that Melissa contacted us on 4/1/10, and her phone call was returned on 4/2/10 with an appointment scheduled for 4/5/10. The Castle rep was running early and did call both homeowners to confirm that arriving early was ok. The Castle rep who visited specializes in kitchen and bath remodeling and was not the best suited for the project. We appreciate the feedback and have taken actions to ensure that adequate staff is available so the correct person can be sent to visit all potential projects. Castle does attempt to complete all ballpark estimates within 10 days. This report was filed on 4/16/10 which was past our goal of 10 day turn around. We did not meet our goal and apologized to the homeowner over the phone for our poor customer service.

We spent over a year gathering information to make the decision to choose Castle Building and Remodeling. for our complete kitchen remodel. The biggest reason we chose them was their Design and Planning process - specifically the Budget Estimate and line-item specifications. It was very assuring that with their professional help, we were able to make all of our decisions up front and see the entire process reflected in a contract document. The building process was watching all of the design and planning come to life. All of their staff were professional, responsive and wonderful to work with. They were very accommodating as far as working with us so we could do some of the work ourselves (all of the demolition, all of the painting and staining). We LOVE our new kitchen and look forward to working with Castle again.

It started out well. I was a bit tentative because an earlier venture to their showroom for a different project yielded very discouraging customer service. I had to make a significant payment just to check out samples. The service was friendly at first, though. It took my tile installer some time to pick up some of the tiles, so Natural Built Home charged me a $50.00 "warehouse fee" that they did not warn me about ahead of time. I was surprised, since I called them to check in and let them know that he was coming within a week, and also because I had spent so much money there.

NATURAL BUILT HOME STRIVES TO OFFER EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE TO EVERY CUSTOMER. I WISH WE HAD THE WAREHOUSE SPACE TO STORE EVERYONE'S ITEMS INDEFINITELY BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE DO NOT. THIS CUSTOMER HAD LEFT HER LARGE ORDER OF TILE IN OUR WAREHOUSE FOR OVER 6 WEEKS. OUR POLICIES ARE CLEARLY PUBLISHED ON OUR WEBSITE. EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS WELL OVER THE STORAGE TIME LIMIT, WE DID NOT CHARGE HER THE WAREHOUSE FEE. SHE WAS NEVER CHARGED ANY ADDITIONAL MONEY FOR THE STORAGE OF HER ITEMS. OUR RECORDS INDICATE WE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES POLITELY ASKING HER TO PICK UP HER TILE AND INFORMING HER OF THE POLICY. AS FAR AS THE SAMPLE CHECKOUT, WE DO CHARGE A FEE TO CHECK OUT OUR SAMPLES. THE FEE IS FULLY REFUNDABLE WHEN THEY ARE RETURNED. UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVE FOUND THAT IF WE DO NOT CHARGE A FEE, OUR SAMPLES ARE NEVER RETURNED. I HOPE THIS MEMBER IS HAPPY WITH HER NEW BATHROOMS AS THE TILE SHE PICKED OUT WERE BEAUTIFUL!

We also do not handle things like plumbing, electrical, HVAC, flooring / exterior trim repairs.
If these issues came up mid project, our team would subcontract out those types of projects to our trade partners. Finally, small handyman jobs would also not typically be covered by our team.
