We have been serving residential and commercial clients throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area since 1992. We are a locally owned business and our goal is to exceed your expectations. That means we arrive on time, provide well trained professionals, do the job well and know it’s not finished until you’re satisfied. No job is too big or small — one call does it all!
The technician (Tom Nightengale) was very accomodating and offered to come over and look at our leak on a Saturday, because we were having trouble scheduling a time during the work week (because of our schedules, not his). Tom offered to do the repair for free, even though it was no longer under warranty. Tom spent some time reviewing some other issues around our house, so we insisted on paying the "trip fee." Cady has changed ownership since they did the original work at our house, but I was very pleased with the quality of the interaction with Tom. I am planning to have them back to change out all of the electrical outlets at our house from two prong to three prong.
Description of Work: I had a shower drain/pipe that was leaking into my unfinished basement. Cady had repaired a larger problem related to this drain more than a year ago, so I called them to come back and look at it. They found a place right next to the drain where the caulk had pulled free and so they resealed it.

I have been fixing up my 100 year old basement, repairing mortar, and painting walls and a floor. I hit a problem that I was could not fix. Over many years, water seeping in through the limestone foundation had rotted the bottom of one side of a door frame (no door), along with some base molding. Should the frame be completely rebuilt, and if so where would the renovation end? Could the frame be stabilized? I knew that I needed an experienced problem solver. I described my situation to the owner of Cady, Jim Carpenter, who said he would send me a problems solver, Tom Nightingale. Tom came up with a workable solution to stabilizing the door frame. He also completed some additional renovation of complex molding along the base of a wall. I was impressed by his creative problem solving, and the knowledge and experience and skill behind his solution.
Description of Work: Carpentry: Stabilizing a basement door frame which had some rotten wood due to water seepage; install missing molding at the bottom of a plywood wall.
A mixed bag. Cady is a contractor for services. I called then, and a guy (Tom Nightengale) came out promptly and gave a detailed bid for the jobs. Price was on the low end of the bids received. Garage window, stoop, lift pump cover, and the ceiling fan went great. He was very pleasant, cleaned up after himself, and the crew was very polite and courteous. Other jobs were all a hassle. Had to continually press them on details, some cosmetic, others not. Damaged boards, exposed nails. On one roof deck, the floor of the deck noticebly sagged when you stepped on it. I had to press him to even admit this was bad before he would fix it. On the other roof deck all the railings are hung to the inside of the post, except one that inexplicably is on the outside of the post, not matching and looking odd. In the bathroom, instead of repairing or replacing the drywall as discussed, just removed the damaged drywall and filled the hole with silicone caulk. When the paint bubbled up three days later, I touched it with my finger and it sunk in a good half inch. I called Cady, and a different guy came out and fixed the problem. The whole job even without the redo of the drywall took three days longer then they had told me. On the whole, Cady Handyman stood by their work and fixed most of the problems, but the overall quality of the work was not what I would have expected, and was far more hassle then I would have desired. Would not use that particular handyman again, and despite their efforts not certain that I would use Cady again either. Update 4/14/2011 All the painting he did on the exterior peeled off over the winter and needs to be re-done. The deck railings loosened over the winter with noticeble gaps and unven areas. The stoop and the ceiling fan are working.....for now. Update 8/21/11: Two more railing beams have fallen off the deck, I replaced them. The stoop repair completely fell apart this weekend. This means all the repairs they did except the ceiling fan have failed in less then 9 months......
Description of Work: replaced sill and moulding on exterior window, demo'd out old insulation from detached garage, repaired missing bricks on garage stoop, demo'd and replaced to large decks and one small deck, repaired damaged drywall in bathroom, fixed switch and installed to ceiling fan in the house, re grouted tile in bathroom shower, built new cover for lift pump tank.

Another reliably good service transaction from Cady and Dustin (and two roofing sub-contractors). We got an estimate for this project during a previous visit. Price was competitive with another Angie's-Listed electrician. We went with a known entity. NuTone 2.5-sone bath fans, with switches independent of the light switch, were installed in two bathrooms. A separate switch had to be installed in one of the locations because of room configuration; the other room had a simple replacement of switch type. It was an all-day project, but work was good and a decent value. Dustin kept up cleaning attic insulation throughout the day. Only minor complaint I have is a small divot put into the wall plaster near one of the switches.

They sent someone different than had given me the estimate due to scheduling concerns. He was professional and at first I had no concerns. However, after he was almost through with the work he said in order to be helpful the windows should have been taken off and sanded ( I thought that is what they would do) and that what he had done really wouldn't help. And the windows didn't shut any better, nor did they look much better. If I would have known it wouldn't help I wouldn't have hired the work to be done and would have applied the money to improve the windows in some other way. Plus we supplied all the paint and stain, yet they still charged us $75 in supplies for sand paper? Plus I noticed one of the windows hadn't even been done. There was some "fuzziness" around the actual hours also, which may have been partly my fault- maybe I should have paid closer attention. I just expected a more clear cut way of billing that did not leave things so ambiguous. Overall, left with a very negative impression and when I called the agency they were somewhat guarded and not very solicitous about my experience. This was the first company I had chosen from Angies List and was the main reason I recently joined- to AVOID having negative experiences like this. I had the previous week had some electrical work done by the same company and had a good experience, but this experience overshadowed the first. UPDATE: Apparently under new management, new manager was very helpful and resolved the repeat charge and overcharge of materials quickly and to my satisfaction. Stated that new management would be conducting business differently/addressing concerns I stated. Appreciate the good follow through.
Description of Work: scraped and sanded windows with goal of helping the close and maintain them due to moisture.

Response from CADY HANDYMAN SERVICES
Cady Handyman Services appreciates the input and honest review we received here from The Member. We have discussed the concerns raised in this report with our technicians and we have learned some valuable customer service lessons herein. We followed up again on this report with The Member and she very clearly had concerns that were not handled sufficiently. The Member stated that she felt that the "materials" part of the invoice was not clearly discussed with her. Cady Handyman Services will always do what is fair and we apologize for putting this customer in a position. Our remedy that The Member felt was fair is to REFUND her $50.00 for the material misunderstanding. We will do everything in our power to more proactively manage these type of problems in a timely and professional manner at this time and in the future.

They were polite and knowledgeable, but we ran into issues when the worker needed to go to Menards three times in the course of the day. The visits could have been minimized had he simply checked the item purchased more carefully in the store, and he admitted that himself. A separate man came to do the plumbing, and they had to call back the other gentleman once the plumber discovered the measurements were incorrect. Granted, they were my original measurements, but you would think that they would double check them before starting the work. On the plus they were friendly and did a good job with the install, and gave us a quote on a potential future project while there for free. Overall we were pleased, but felt some simple checks would have saved time (and likely money) for us and Cady alike.

We made an appointment for 8 am. Around 8:45 my husband called me at work to say no one has shown up. I called Diane and she called Tom. She called me back and said he was on his way to get the door. He arrived close to 11 am. He said the store didn't want to give him the door. Oh and he came alone. When we ordered the door it said to not lay it flat or you could damage the door and 2 people should lift it. So, how'd he do it alone? Anyways, he got the old door out, and then pointed out the new door opens on the wrong side. He asked my husband do you want me to install it anyways. He agreed. Now, I would like to guess what happened. Tom came over a few nights before to give estimates on all the work we could have done here. Just before he left I said, "ok, so Tuesday you go get the door at Menards. Make sure it opens on the right side." I should have said the correct side. He said, sure and glanced at door as he was leaving, making a note I think. When it took so long for him to get the door, and then its not the left hand open I'm sure I ordered, I suspect he got them to trade it for the right hand door. BUT this is just guessing. Once he got the door in, it was not flush to the floor. He added a board as a transition but its not cut to size very well. Also the stucco on the outside is cracked open. And the worst part is the door has a gap in the middle. So up by ceiling and down by floor it has maybe 1/8 inch space between door and frame. But in the middle it is a 1/4 to 3/8 inch gap. I complained at the time. I thought he could put shims in and move the frame over. He put his level to it and said its level. I said but it is barely latching and he countered that it IS latching so good enough. Then, if I remember correctly, he suggested something that sounded like taking it out and starting over but it was going on 5:30 pm and we just wanted him out by now. I wonder if this is the kind of damage the manufacturer was warning about in not transporting it laying flat or lifting it alone? So we're living with it. In the end, he added $60 for the transition board that isn't cut very well. Whatever, we paid him and will not hire them again. We've not hired a contractor before, so we didn't know what we were doing. It seems like a communication problem and he should not have shown up late and alone.
Description of Work: we hired them to go to Menards and pick up the door and screen door we paid for in advance, bring it to our house, remove old door/ screen door and install the new ones.

Cady staff responded quickly to my inquiry and the bid appointment and work were easy to schedule. Bob was reliable, thorough, a good problem-solver, easy-going (comfortable to have in my house) and a good craftsman. I would absolutely call Cady for other handyman work and would ask for Bob for carpentry. I gave a "B" for price because my guess is that the hourly rate even with the Angie's List discount (Bob prompted me for this by asking how I'd heard of them - appreciated) is perhaps a bit high. I wasn't able to arrange for a bid from the others I called, however, so I'm not certain of this.
Description of Work: I needed to widen a doorway into my laundry room to allow for appliances to pass through. The space was tight and tricky - between a support beam on one side and stairs on the other, with a ceiling vent imposing on part of the top of the door. Bob did a great job with this work. He cut additional space, moved a switch box, ensured that the door would swing gently shut on its own and adeptly installed simple trim to finish the job. The old door - a hollow core - had a hole cut to allow my cat to pass through (but not my dog - vital for litterbox location). The door I chose to replace it was solid pine, and Bob recommended a cat door in the drywall into the room (patchable if no longer needed). He expertly installed this as well.

we suspect the garage door opener was off the chain but can't prove it. Was replaced and Cadyhandyma services did not offer to show us the replacement price of the new garage door opener. They said they registered it for warranty. Scratche lamp shade upon installation. Primary handyman did return and fixed this. Uncle did attempt to reunite the cords for the disconnected air-conditioner that the chipmunks ate through. Not a good idea. Did not wok after this and probably should have stopped him before he attempted this,
Description of Work: Handyman came to house and then called his uncle to assist him with the job. Uncle was not as strong handyman was primary handyman. Took 3 hours to install light fixture. garage door opener needed to be reinstalled which they agreed to change out and install a new garage door opener. Charged for two handyman when one would have been enough Tried to negotiate bill and office manager Dawn said ok then we will just file the lien notice. She had a sinister laugh to her attitude. Never would recommend

I am impressed with the professionalism of the company. Bob came out and knew what the problem was, and because he didn't have a long enough ladder, he went to Ace Hardware and was able to get a ladder to use for an hour. He did a wonderful job, and we will be using him and the company in the future. Thank you Bob!
Description of Work: Bob came out and caulked the leaks around our vent on the roof. He calked the shingles around the vent also which was causing water to seep into our bathroom ceiling.

*ORIGINAL POST* Overall we were pleased with the work and the workmen. The removal of the old electrical post in front was a nasty job and was probably more time-consuming than they anticipated. The addition of the exterior outlets was easily accomodated and they spent the time to get them in exactly the right place, which was appreciated. We were especially pleased with the porch re-screening - it's tight and hardly seems to be there now. Our only negative was that some of the painting was just a bit sloppy. The days they were out were very, very hot but they got everything done in a timely manner. *FOLLOW UP* After about 10-11 months we noticed that the screen on the porch was coming loose, allowing bugs in. We started to call them and they stated that they would get us on the schedule to have someone come out and look at it. This happened several times but we never saw a repair person come out, nor did they call us back. I change my rating to a huge failure - an F - due to the lack of responsiveness, the poor quality of the work and the poor customer service.
Description of Work: Various services around the house including the addition of two exterior electrical outlets, re-screening of a porch, replacement of some woodpecker-damaged siding high on the back of the house, replacement of a piece of fashia, exterior painting touchup, recaulking of exterior windows and replacement of electrical post for fixture at front of the house.

I called the office phone, explained that I had a hole in the side of my house caused by water damage, they gave my phone number to Tom who called and scheduled a time to come out within a day or two. He arrived on time and had no qualms about climbing over debris from a dismantled deck that we had in the backyard. After evaluating the hole he said that he could do the work for us but that we could do it if we would like. He explained what he would do if making the repair himself and we decided that we could do the work. He said we didn't owe him anything and left. He was so pleasant and knowledgeable. He reassured us that this was a minor repair and that the integrity of the house would not be compromised especially now that we are removing the deck and will no longer have water accumulation against the house. He took time to talk to us about other jobs that Cady could help us with around the house. I was very impressed with Tom's professionalism and I hope to get the chance to work with him in the future.
Description of Work: Although Tom was willing to do the work he told us that the repair was something that we could do ourselves and told us how to do it.

It went well. He did a good job of installing the window air conditioner. However, the trip charge took me by surprise. It was 1/3 of the total bill. I'm not sure I'll use them again because of this charge.
Description of Work: I needed installation of a window air conditioner.
We are very happy with all of the work they performed. We worked with Diana on the phone, and she is very courteous and helpful. We had Jim, Jim and Dustin come out and do the work. They were all very nice and easy to talk to. There were a couple of times that the guys were a little later then originally planned, but they called to let me know they'd be late so I didn't have to wonder where they were.
Description of Work: We're selling our home in Apple Valley so we needed a handyman to perform a few jobs for us to get the house ready to sell. We've used Cady Handyman for all of these tasks. We had them paint the trim and the front of the house. They also installed new flooring in our entry way, installed a new service door, two new motion detection lights, drywall work in a closet, plumbing work, drop ceiling in bathroom, new light fixture in office, and electrical work to get the house to code.

It went very well. I have used Cady several times and they always do good work at reasonable rates. Their time estimates are pretty good, and their person doing the job typically works pretty hard to keep to their estimated timing for each job. They did a very nice job on this trip installing a new exterior door, and some new siding that needed replacement on the building. I own a few rental properties in the area, and they have done nice work on several of the properties I own.

Arrived on time -- I showed him the fixture to be installed and the place where it needed to go -- he would need to get on a 20 foot ladder to get to it. I've worked with this company before and they were prompt, punctal and provided very good service. I had worked with the person they sent (Ben), and he was quick and efficient. I saved up a few jobs to make the trip charge worthwhile. Ben completed most of the jobs quickly and efficiently. There were unforeseen problems mounting one light over the garage door and we had to schedule a follow-up visit to complete the work. They understood that I needed the work done in time to host a graduation party and they made by project a priority. I appreciated their service.

To begin with Dianna is very nice. Jim returned my initial call quickly and came out right away to look at my projects. I received estimates the next day and we scheduled the work to be done. I received some very reasonable estimates on future projects as well. Jim and Jim came out and did the tuckpointing and painted my dormers. The garage tuckpointing I asked them to do the day they came out and they were very nice about it and hardly charged me much more. I am very pleased with the way everything went and the work that was performed and will use Cady Handyman again.
I received a call the same day and the plumber came out the following day. Called in advance to make sure I would be there. Needed to go pick up parts. Work was done in little over an hour.
Description of Work: Bath tun spout replacement and fix outside water spicket which needed soldering of outside pipe.
Both Tom and Dustin did a great job. Dustin measured the window opening, then followed me to Home Depot to make sure that the window ordered would be the correct size. I really appreciated this as it had to be specially ordered because of the size and I didn't know how to measure for the rough opening with the old window in place. Once the window came in, Tom and Dustin did the window installation, and Dustin handled the electrical work and the ceiling fan.Everything was completed in one day. The window is a perfect fit, and it looks great. Tom had several good suggestions for completing the molding and trim. There were issues that came up with the old wiring that Dustin was able to resolve very professionally, despite the odd way the old wiring had been done.
Description of Work: Replaced two slider window units with a triple slider window unit in basement. Rewired an outlet and a switch that were not working correctly and were protruding from the wall; and rewired for and installed a ceilng fan.
