Paul was great. He came out and looked at my house, which required significant landscaping work due to years of neglect. He drew up a design proposal after talking with us, and I couldnt be happier with the results. The work was done exactly as quoted, with no pricing surprises. The patio in the backyard looks great, and is fantastic addition.

Paul and his team did an outstanding job on a very big project. They were on-time and on budget. The quality of the work was great. Paul made several visits during the bid process and was on the job every day until it was completed. Paul was also available after the work was done for follow-up questions. I secured four bids before I started the project. Better Yards was the most price competitive with the best solution. The work was so good, that three of my neighbors also asked Better Yards to do work for them. We are very happy with the results.

My experience was fine. This was a busy year for people because it rained during the entire month of May so everybody was behind. We asked for four different quotes, two of them failed to quote. One came out and we never heard from the person again, another one failed to return a phone call and so we only had two and the other one was considerably higher than Paul. He did everything he said he was going to do, he's very pleasant and his workers are very dedicated and worked very hard. I am very positive about him. He came when he said and they worked until they were completed, Paul had left but his workmen had stayed at least after 7 at night.
Description of Work: Better Yards & Gardens did about a $4200 worth of landscaping for us. Everything from a lot of taking down of existing trees that were well overgrown, then putting in new plantings and sod and expanding a garden and mulching.

I wanted an estimate for ripping out sod and most landscaped areas of backyard, along with partial removal of a sidealk and some other things in the yard. Paul (I think that was his name, it's been over a month) came out to give me an estimate. I was very happy to see that he was willing to come out in the evening so I did not have to take time off work. The downside of that is that he got stuck in rush hour traffic. It was not an issue on my end but I'm sure having the extra time unexpectedly added to his night wasn't a benefit to his schedule. Regardless he came and walked through the yard with me. He provided a written estimate before leaving. While Paul had by far the best price (less than half the nearest competitor), I did not feel that he took the time to really understand exactly what I wanted, vs. the other landscapers who came out. The other three spent over an hour with me and really asked a lot of questions about what level of maintenance I wanted, what types of plants I liked, what sort of feel I wanted to create. It would have been a no-brainer to go with Better Yards & Gardens if I was already well versed in landscaping, but for someone like me who is a big researcher and wants to understand what all my options are, it was not the best fit. I would definitely call BY&G again if I really knew exactly what I wanted- their price was far less than others. For this particular project, it just wasn't the best fit.

sidewalk was done nicely. half of the plants (30 total) died and then he replaced them, and those died also. 4 shrubs are struggling to live. We ended up redoing all of it. the mulch he used was twigs and big chunks of wood. we had to replce all of the mulch too.

Response from Better Yards & Gardens
We were not able to locate a file on this report that was sent in. We went to the address provided and have not done work at this location in the past. This file is over two years old. Most of our product comes from Baileys which is one of the top plant growers in the Minnesota area. The plants we install are zoned for Minnesota and have a high sucess rate for survival if maintained properly. We also stand behind our product for a year, so we choose plants that are hardy for this area.

He made excellent recommendations for type of paver, and spent time with us working out a layout to accommodate all our needs. After another contractor messed up our planned time frame, they moved us up 2 weeks and completed the work in 1 day. The patio is beautiful, and their service was even better.

We were very pleased with Terry's work. He was polite and professional when he gave us an estimate. He charged us exactly what he estimated. On the day of the work he was so friendly and took time to smile and wave at my two toddler children who were fascinated with what was going on outside. The work was done very quickly.

Paul came out and after I told him approx what we wanted, he gave me a bid before leaving. After getting other bids, I agreed to go with Paul; not only because his bid was lower but he said he would be on site working and directing during the entire process which I felt was very important. I also got a good impression when I met him the first time and knew we could work good together. They started on a Friday and finished by noon the next day. The crew (3) was very good and worked hard. It is a large lot and they had to travel over a large amount of grass to get into the back yard with a bobcat. Part of the bid was to correct any damage they did to the lawn which they corrected before leaving. We were very pleased with the results and would gladly work with Paul again. Enclosed a picture of the patio the next day. I hope to have all the brush on the berm cleared away before winter. New planting and reddish mulch replacing what is there now.
Description of Work: Installed a patio / fire pit into the berm in our backyard. An oval shape, the width 20' by 13' deep with a wall into the berm that would be a sitting wall.

I contacted Better Yards and Gardens through their web site. Paul called me, set up an appointment, and came out to my house. I showed him the area that needed help and described what I wanted done to improve it. After some scheduling complications, he met with me again about two weeks later to show me the landscaping design that he had devised and present a quote. I was happy with both design and price. He was able to schedule the work in about two weeks later. He and his crew were able to complete the entire project in one day. The results look great! Paul called me within a few days afterwards to make sure that I was happy with their work.

Paul came over and had a lot of good idea's. His bid tied my lowest bid, and I went with him because his ideas were better to me. He was up front that he may not be able to start right away, becasue he had a big deal coming soon, but luckily he did it next week any way. He did a lot of extra stuff for me, and for free. i felt a little guilty presenting the Angis list coupon at the end, because he realy did a lot of extra work. His crew were very good in all categories. I'm very happy. Thank you Paul and crew.
Description of Work: Replaced most of my front yard. All new plant, added a 12 x 8 paver patio. Replaced all shrubs. Filled in old drainage gully. Made a large encirclement around 9 trees with borders an mulch. Regraded my house. Placed sod over everything.

The Better Yards and Gardens team showed up early and started preparing to build the wall right away. The guys did the work all by hand and they worked quickly. Later in the day some of the team switched over to working on the landscaping. By the end of the day we had a new retaining wall and some beautiful landscaping. My grade of B for quality reflects that even though we cared for the sod they brought in the way they instructed, none of it lived beyond a month. That being said, I would definitely hire this company again for another project.
Description of Work: Better Yards and Gardens gave me a bid for building a 55 foot long retaining wall as well as installing one landscape bed, fixing another landscape bed, and planting several bushes, some perennials, and a tree. After checking other companies, we decided to use Better Yards and Gardens for our project.

Paul came out in the evening to do an estimate. We had a design concept for landscaping with two options for expanded scope. Paul actually suggested a different material that was better suited for short landscaping walls and showed us catalog to help us visualize the finished look. Better Yards and Gardens was by far the best price option for our project. Paul said that they were scheduling a couple of weeks out and that the job (tear out and rebuild) would be completely finished in one day. They showed up as promised with all the equipment and a crew and completed the job. We absolutely love the results.
Description of Work: Removed old block walls and timbers. Installed three sections of landscaping wall for rock beds and flower beds in the front yard. Installed geotech fabric, sand and black dirt. Sodded lawn areas.

I got 3 bids from landscape contractors, and Paul's bid from Better Yards and Gardens was the lowest by $2,000. A crew of six arrived on the day of the work at around 9:30 (after loading up trucks and driving about an hour to my house). They were friendly and hardworking. Started by tearing out an old slab of concrete that had rebar in it, requiring various powered saws and a Bobcat-thing with a forklift attachment. After that, much surveying, measuring, digging, spreading layers of aggregate and/or other material, tamping, cutting and laying of pavers, running some machine over the surface, filling with more material, spraying, and whatever others tasks required to finish the job. It was fascinating to watch them work. Everyone was constantly doing something, and they seemed to be well-coordinated, like a team that's worked together a long time with each person knowing exactly what to do next. Very efficient and productive. It was a long day for them, but when they were done, everything looked fantastic. The Bobcat had torn up some of the yard hauling things back and forth, but I'd been warned to expect that beforehand, and they put down black dirt and raked it all out and then planted grass seed and watered it down so that those portions of the yard would grow back within a month or so (three weeks later - the grass has come in about 60% of the way). Before they left, they made sure they'd cleaned up every last bit of debris. I was really impressed. And did I mention how friendly Paul and his crew were?

Paul is very professional and responsive. He made multiple visits to my house when the job changed. He made reccomendations that saved me money. He is so honest he did the job for $500 less than his original quote because he said they used less materials and labor than he predicted. That type of honesty of very rare these days.

We called Paul in 2011 to take a look at our backyard drainage issues and discuss options for redoing our front yard landscaping. He came back to our house at least one other time in 2011 to look at our yard and answer other questions. We decided to hold off on the project until 2012. He was easy to work with, flexible, extremely patient and responsive. We decided to add additional work to the backyard. The night before the work was supposed to begin, we decided that we also wanted him to remove a huge spruce tree taking up most of our front yard. Paul was able to accommodate both requests. The project took about 3 days and was painless. Paul himself was there installing the retaining wall and performing other work. The final product is amazing - a huge difference. I highly recommend Paul to anyone.
Description of Work: Front yard: Remove railroad tie retaining walls, overgrown bushes, and large pine tree. Build retaining wall with landscaping blocks. Plant new bushes and perennials. Finish with river rock and mulch. Trim trees. Plant sod. Back yard: Remove railroad tie retaining wall, regrade area near garage, build retaining wall with landscaping blocks.

They were great to work with. They even allowed me to participate and do some work with them. Paul was very friendly and professional. His daughter, Jessica, went with me to the nursery to help pick plants. She was very knowledgeable and explained what would work and what wouldn’t. They were very patient and did a beautiful job. Their estimate was also the most reasonable of three. The rest of the staff was just as friendly and accommodating as the owners. I would definitely recommend them to others.

I contacted 2 landscaping companies to come out for a bid to do the landscaping on our property in mid-October. THe owner called back within 24 hours to set up a time to meet to review our needs andwork up an estimate. We liked him and found the price fair based upon the amount of labor involved. He and another guy came out a couple of weeks later on a Friday and were there all day. They completed the work to satisfaction and the owener gave us a couple of other ideas on what we could do around our deck, which was not in the job they perfromed that day. I would use them again.

Paul designed a attractive retaining wall system for a difficult area with a tuck under garage. The crew worked quickly and efficiently. They left the area clean and free of any debris.
Description of Work: Paul removed the old wood and concrete retaining walls and plantings, and designed and installed new stone retaining walls and plantings. He changed the retaining walls from a two tier to a three tier system which is much more attractive. He also re-landscaped an area to provide a smoother land flow. A drainage system was made part of the landscape.

Paul, owner, listened carefully to our vision of berm appearance and provided us with the simplisit and most cost effective plan. His team (including Paul) showed up on schedule and completed project on schedule.
